Trump Confirms Officer Shot at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Is Recovering Well

A Secret Service officer who sustained a gunshot wound during an incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night is reportedly “in great shape,” according to President Trump.

During a Saturday night press conference, Trump shared that the officer’s life was spared thanks to a highly effective bulletproof vest. “One officer was shot, but saved by the fact that he was wearing obviously a very good bulletproof vest,” Trump stated, adding that the officer was receiving medical care at a local hospital.

“He was shot at very close range with a powerful gun, and the vest did its job,” Trump explained. “I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great. He’s in great shape. He is in very high spirits.”

NBC has since reported, citing a source, that the officer has been discharged from the hospital.

The incident unfolded when suspected gunman, 31-year-old Cole Allen, allegedly breached a security checkpoint and advanced toward the event while armed with two guns and multiple knives, according to police and sources. In response, President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and several senior administration officials were swiftly evacuated from the ballroom.

Gunfire erupted roughly 20 minutes after Trump arrived at the annual dinner at the Washington Hilton, which was packed with more than 2,000 guests.

The black-tie crowd — including Washington journalists, cabinet members and White House aides — scrambled for cover as shots rang out, with some diving under tables and others rushing toward exits.

The panic unfolded in seconds, witnesses said, as Secret Service agents converged on the threat inside the hotel lobby area outside the ballroom.

Trump said the gunman “was fast — he was running full blast” and “charged from 50 yards away.”

The deranged suspect, a teacher and graduate of Caltech from Torrance, Calif., was quickly confronted and taken down before he could reach the main ballroom.

Police believe Allen may have been staying at the hotel, which hosts the high-profile event each year.

Investigators are working to determine how he was able to approach the security checkpoint while carrying weapons.

DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect is facing charges including assault on a federal law enforcement officer and two counts of using a firearm to commit violence.

He will be arraigned Monday in federal court, she said, adding that additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.

FBI agents and local police visited an address in Torrance believed to be connected to the alleged gunman.

Aerial footage showed a heavy law enforcement presence surrounding the property as investigators gathered evidence.

Trump praised law enforcement for acting quickly as he revealed what happened on social media.

“Quite an evening in DC, Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON,’ but will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” he added.

The annual White House Correspondents Association dinner in Washington took a dramatic turn on Saturday when an armed individual disrupted the event, prompting the urgent evacuation of President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The incident left a crowd of journalists and officials from both political parties in shock.

The suspect engaged in a shootout with law enforcement before being apprehended, while the President and members of his Cabinet were swiftly escorted from the Washington Hilton venue. Many attendees ducked for cover under their tables, though some Cabinet members remained in the room despite the chaos.

According to police, the intruder was equipped with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives as he breached a security checkpoint outside the ballroom. Video footage captured the suspect rushing past security personnel, who quickly took their positions and opened fire.

A Secret Service agent was hit by gunfire but was fortunately protected by a bulletproof vest. The agent is reportedly in “good spirits,” as confirmed by the agency.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, informed the press during a separate briefing that the suspect, who was not injured by gunfire, faces charges of committing a violent crime with a firearm and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Following the incident, Trump gave updates on Truth Social while still at the dinner as attendees waited to see whether the night would continue.

Trump at a late press conference said he wanted to come back in to restart the night, but was told by law enforcement that he needed to leave the premises.

The president struck a unifying tone while speaking to reporters in the White House press briefing room, calling for national unity.

“But in light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts and resolving our differences peacefully. We have to. We have to resolve our differences,” Trump said.

Trump also took an unusually conciliatory tone toward the press during the briefing, and thanked them for their “responsible” coverage of the incident.

The first question the president took was from Weija Jiang, senior White House correspondent for CBS and president of the White House Correspondents Association.

“Madam chairman,” Trump said. “I just want to say you did a fantastic job, what a beautiful evening and we’re going to reschedule.”

“You’ve done a fantastic job,” he said.

The president invoked his planned White House ballroom, saying Saturday’s shooting highlighted the need for the structure.

“I didn’t want to say this but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we’re planning at the White House. It’s actually a larger room, and it’s much more secure,” Trump said, noting the structure was “drone proof” and has “bulletproof glass.”

“That’s why Secret Service, that’s why the military are demanding it,” he said.

World leaders, along with Trump’s political allies and critics, were quick to react to Saturday’s shooting.

“Prayers have been answered for the safety of President Trump, the First Lady, cabinet members, and all guests at the event,” said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas).

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) said “political violence is absolutely unacceptable, while Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said in a post on X that he was “thankful that the President and others at the correspondents dinner are safe, and for the quick response from law enforcement.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed relief that Trump and everyone in the room was unharmed.

“Political violence has no place in any democracy and my thoughts are with all those who have been shaken by this disturbing event,” he said on X.

The incident took place against the backdrop of the Iran war, but Trump said he did not believe there was a connection.

Police say they believe the suspect was a lone wolf actor.

The incident put Trump and members of the media, who have clashed throughout his presidency, through a shared traumatic event.

Trump said he had wanted to return to the dinner that night to make the point that a gunman could not succeed in interrupting such an event, but that police had said it would be against protocol.

He suggested he had been ready to say some harsh jokes about the press, but that when a new dinner is held in 30 days, he might have to be softer with his approach.

According to a report on Thursday, two container ships seized by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz have been directed toward the port of Bandar Abbas, a key location along this strategic waterway.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that the vessels, named MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, were allegedly operating without proper authorization and had interfered with their navigation systems. However, these claims have not been independently confirmed.

In a statement to Reuters, a relative of one of the crew members said, “Around 20 heavily armed Iranians boarded the ship. The sailors are under the control of the Iranians, their movements on the ship are restricted, yet they are being treated well.”

Sources informed the news outlet that both ships, managed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), were directed to Bandar Abbas with a total of 40 crew members aboard.

“The ship is anchored nine nautical miles from the Iranian coast. Negotiations between MSC and Iran are ongoing, our sailors are fine,” Filip Radulovic, Montenegro’s minister of maritime affairs, was quoted by Reuters as telling state television there. 

Before their seizure on Wednesday, the ships reported coming under fire near the strait, underscoring the increasingly volatile conditions in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes. 

The situation is unfolding after U.S. forces recently seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman as it was approaching Iranian waters Sunday.

That vessel, the Touska, remains in U.S. custody as American forces continue inspecting what maritime security sources told Reuters is likely “dual-use” cargo — materials that can serve both civilian and military purposes — following a voyage from Asia. 

The U.S. military is also continuing to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports on Thursday.

The usually glamorous event at the Washington Hilton turned chaotic after a gunman opened fire in the lobby at approximately 8:15 p.m. This prompted an immediate response from the Secret Service, who hurried to protect President Donald Trump and the thousands of attendees present.

Patel, attending as a guest of the Daily Mail with his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, wasted no time in advising those at his table to take cover.

As journalists sought refuge by crouching on the floor and hiding beneath tables, Patel shouted clear instructions for everyone to “stay down.”

Daily Mail reporters on the scene recounted hearing three to four gunshots and Secret Service agents urgently instructing people to get down.

When it was safe to stand back up, Patel and Wilkins asked the reporters standing next to them if they were OK, and then were escorted out of the ballroom by his security detail.

‘The US Secret Service, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. One individual is in custody,’ a White House official told the Daily Mail in a statement.

‘The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,’ the statement said.

Trump confirmed the gunman was in custody in a post to Truth Social, which he reiterated at a White House briefing a little after 10:30pm. 

‘Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again,’ the President wrote on Truth Social.

Trump and the First Lady departed the hotel and returned to the White House.

Trump noted how the experience at the dinner tonight was ‘rather traumatic’ for her. 

‘I can’t imagine there’s a profession that’s more dangerous,’ he also said at the press briefing.  

The President was attending the event for the first time since 2015 and was set to be deliver remarks for the first time as a sitting commander-in-chief.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Orrin Glenn Newsome, aged 66, was taken into custody yesterday following allegations that he struck a woman with a cane, resulting in the loss of her front teeth.

An officer from the Gainesville Police Department responded to the incident around 8 p.m. on April 24. According to their report, a domestic dispute erupted between Newsome and the victim at their residence. During the altercation, Newsome allegedly struck the woman twice on the head with a walking cane, leading to the dislodgement of her two front teeth. The victim reportedly retaliated by pushing the cane back, causing Newsome to sustain a forehead injury.

The officer noted the presence of blood droplets in the hallway and on the cane, aligning with the victim’s version of events. In contrast, Newsome claimed the confrontation took place in the bedroom while he was on the bed.

Newsome now faces charges of domestic aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His criminal history includes eight non-violent felony convictions, two non-violent misdemeanor convictions, and two traffic violations. Previous domestic battery charges against him were dismissed in 2020 and 2021. Judge Donna Keim has ordered Newsome to be held without bail pending a State Attorney’s Office motion to keep him in custody until his trial. Should the judge reject this motion, bail will be determined at a subsequent hearing.

“I’ve been out of it for a while,” the 76-year-old actress explained. “And I’ve been out for a very good reason. I became a mother at 42, welcoming my only son, and I took that role seriously.”

Reflecting on the challenges of balancing stardom with parenting, she added, “Maybe some people can juggle both, and if they can, more power to them.”

“I love that they can. For me, I recognize that I cannot. Since I like to focus on what I do, I cannot do all things at the same time.

In 1992, Jillian gave birth to Andrew Joseph Murcia, the Los Angeles Times reported. Jillian said on the podcast that she had no regrets about her decision to prioritize motherhood.

“I felt that I had a great career,” she explained. “When I left the industry, so to speak, it was after my son was born … I had to be there to put him to bed. But then he had to grow roots. He had to go to school. And I thought about this. 

“I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a thousand miles away if he gets a boo-boo. I don’t want to be a thousand miles away when he wants to talk about something just terrible that happened at school or just wonderful that happened at school.’

“I want to be there to see him get his first communion,” she said. “I don’t want to be in front of a camera somewhere when it’s time for him to have his first communion.

“So, basically, I hung up my dancing shoes, so to speak, and said, ‘Nope, nope, this is the most important role I have to play right now, and that’s being a mom.’

“I’m sure I made some mistakes along the way,” Jillian continued. “But I learned an awful lot, too. And I had the privilege with my husband and God of bringing life into the world and raising a young man who is now an international tax attorney. 

“He’s handsome. He’s witty. He could have been an actor because he’s got a mind like a steel trap, his delivery is way better than mine ever was and he has a great voice. And I wouldn’t trade that for the world, for the time that I was gone.”

Over the years, Jillian has been selective in choosing gigs that won’t keep her far away from her family. Her last appearance was in a 2000 episode of “Walker, Texas Ranger.”

“I love my industry,” Jillian told the outlet. “I love what I did during the time that I was in that industry. I loved the job that I had and was thankful for it. I was really thankful … I find it remarkable when I look at it now.”

In 2021, Jillian spoke to Fox News Digital about how many people viewed her as a sex symbol during her time on “It’s a Living.”

“Well, it didn’t bother me,” Jillian said at the time. “I took it more as [the public] appreciated my looks. And that was fine with me. When you look good, you feel good. And that’s how I felt.

“I certainly don’t approve of some of the things that have happened over the years [in the industry],” she said.

“I support women standing up for themselves. But if you ask me specifically how I felt about that title back then, then I have to be very honest with you. And the truth is, I felt quite honored that people liked the way I looked, and I pleased their eyes. I was fine with that.”

Jillian also noted that faith kept her grounded in Hollywood.

“Some might say it’s not a normal childhood to go into a studio in front of cameras,” she said.

“That’s true. But from a young age, I was taught that it was just playing pretend. I just got paid for it. And playing pretend is very childlike, and it made me happy. I was never forced. I did it because I loved it. And I think that made the difference.”
