Discover the Timeless Charm of This Beloved Tea Haven: Why Visitors Keep Returning

0

The enticing scent of cardamom fills the room as a pot of spiced tea simmers on the stove. Behind the counter, Amarjit Singh Thind, affectionately known as Ambi, meticulously prepares his cherished brew.

Located in Sydney’s northern suburbs, Ambi’s chai bar offers more than just tea; each steaming cup is infused with nostalgia, community bonds, and appreciation.

“I offer a complimentary cup of chai to veterans and active service members because I am a veteran myself,” Ambi shares with SBS News.

“It’s my way of giving back,” he explains.

Bill, a former serviceman who dedicated over ten years to the Australian Army, is one of the many who appreciates Ambi’s generous gesture.

“My family has a long military history, and a relative actually survived Gallipoli. On Anzac Day every year, I think of him and the many others who lost their lives,” he says, toasting Ambi at one of his chai bars.

“Ambi’s offer of a free chai is a small gesture but really means a lot to me and others who have served and still serve.”

It’s decades since Ambi served with British forces in Germany during the Cold War, but he says the memories remain vivid.

“In 1979, after I had finished basic training [in the United Kingdom], I was deployed to one of the British Army of the Rhine RAF bases where we maintained communication centres,” he says.

The British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) was the designation for British occupation and garrison forces in Germany following both World Wars.

“We were always on standby to ensure the planes got off the ground,” he says.

“Those were probably the best years of my life, quite frankly. I volunteered for everything and enjoyed all the adventures that followed.”

Building a chai business in Australia

After his years in uniform, Ambi’s next chapter didn’t come all at once. It began quietly, over cups of chai shared with others, before growing into something much larger.

After migrating to Australia in 1989, Ambi set up an IT training business, building a new career far removed from his time in the army. He later coached a women’s hockey team where his passion for chai began to take shape in a new way.

“At the training sessions, we’d sit down together – myself and a bunch of young players,” he says.

“They admired the flavours and the spices, the smells of the chai. However, initially, they did not know what it was.”

Chai is a fragrant, spiced tea beverage originating in India. It is traditionally made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic spices, such as ginger, green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and black pepper. The tea and spices are then steeped in hot milk, which is usually sweetened with sugar.

“Down the track, my chai became so popular that I took four flasks to training, and that became a tradition,” Ambi says.

“Then, in 2019, I embarked on an ambitious project to set up a little chai cafe, and the business has grown ever since.”

Today, Ambi runs multiple chai bars in Sydney and the ACT, with plans to expand further, including into Melbourne and the UK.

For him, chai is also deeply tied to his personal history and the journey of South Asian communities around the world.

Following Kenya’s independence in 1963, the Kenyan government under President Jomo Kenyatta required British passport holders, particularly those of South Asian descent (Kenyan Asians), to either apply for Kenyan citizenship or leave the country within a set period.

Many chose not to take up Kenyan citizenship, spurring a significant exodus of the community from Kenya, with many relocating to the UK.

Ambi and his father were among those who left.

“The plane actually was on the tarmac and I remember running with my dad to board the flight. It was the last plane out of Nairobi,” he says.

“My mother and brothers were in England, so we moved there.”

Chai, he says, has remained a constant thread through his life across Kenya, the UK, India and Australia and continues to hold special significance for many South Asian communities as both a cultural ritual and a social connector.

“It is very warming, and if you’re feeling under the weather, chai is phenomenal,” says Ambi’s customer Bob, who migrated from the UK.

“It reminds me of my mum making tea, but this is a special way of making it. The spices are just wonderful!

It brings back memories of home and brings everyone around the table.

Ambi says the strength of the flavours in his chai lies in the authenticity of its preparation.

“When I started, there was really no authentic brewing of chai in Sydney. Most places served chai made with powder and syrup and a bit of cinnamon thrown in,” he says.

“Our chai is handcrafted, and we mix all the spices, brew it with water, add milk and then serve it piping hot, just how mum would have made it.”

Spices sit in a glass bowl ready to be added to tea to make chai.

With the world often dominated by headlines of conflict and uncertainty, Ambi says his chai bars have become something simpler — and more human.

“Togetherness, connectedness and teamwork, that’s what we are all about.

“Over a chai, we sit and talk and get to know each other. It brings the community closer, I am very proud of that.”

Florida Woman Charged with Double Homicide After Cryptic Question Leads Police to Shocking Discovery

0

Florida prosecutors have announced their intention to pursue the death penalty in the case of a woman accused of fatally shooting two of her former partners on the same day.

Susan Avalon, aged 51, was taken into custody in December following a tragic series of events. On December 17, David Scott, 54, was discovered at his Bradenton residence with a gunshot wound to his chest. Later that day, Timothy Flecher, 55, was also found dead in his Tampa home.

Despite his grave condition, Scott managed to communicate with police upon their arrival, identifying the shooter as “possibly my ex-wife, Susan,” according to an affidavit referenced by the Tampa Bay Times.

The day following these incidents, authorities located Avalon at her residence. When approached by police regarding her ex-husband, she reportedly asked, “Which one?” as noted by the New York Post.

Split of Susan Avalon's mug shot and her in court

Avalon’s arrest has drawn significant attention, with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office actively involved in the investigation.

That’s only when they realized there might be a second victim.

She was also reportedly seen bleaching the inside of her car.

Flecher was found dead from a gunshot wound inside his home with the backdoor glass shattered after police did a welfare check on him following their conversation with Avalon.

“Witnesses reported seeing Avalon and her vehicle in a driveway near the home around the time of the shooting,” the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office said in a release. “Investigators have also found several pieces of evidence they say connect her to the murder.”

Prosecutors believe Avalon killed Flecher first, then Scott next just hours later, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Her current boyfriend, identified as Jeffrey Wescoat, told police in an arrest affidavit that Avalon had been sending him “unusual” texts during the day and had called to tell him, “in case anything happened to her, she loved him,” the Times reported.

He also heard her say “f–k David and f–k Tim” when she got home before taking a shower with her clothes on.

“While our case focuses on one victim here in Hillsborough County, we know this tragedy did not end with one life,” State Attorney Suzy Lopez said in a statement. “Two families are grieving, and we are committed to seeking justice while standing with everyone impacted by this senseless violence.”

The state’s attorney’s office added that they are seeking the death penalty because of Avalon’s “cold, calculated and premeditated” crimes that were “especially heinous, atrocious” and “cruel, that it occurred during the commission of a burglary and that the defendant was involved in a contemporaneous violent felony.”

Avalon was charged with first-degree murder in Flecher’s death and second-degree murder in Scott’s death.

Avalon, who remains in custody in Hillsborough County without bail, is expected to next be in court in July.

Inside the Lavish Lifestyle of Pam Bondi’s Alleged Partner, John Wakefield

In a twist of fate for Pam Bondi, the former Attorney General found herself without a job in 2026. However, Donald Trump reassured the public that she was transitioning to the private sector. Fortunately, Bondi’s partner, John Wakefield, seems well-positioned financially. With Bondi’s substantial assets—though unconfirmed—and Wakefield’s thriving business ventures, they likely enjoy an opulent lifestyle.

Despite Bondi’s high-profile role in Trump’s second administration, albeit only for the first year, little is known about Wakefield. So scarce are the details that it remains unclear whether he and Bondi have tied the knot. Yet, what is evident is Wakefield’s lucrative career. He is the executive vice president at a real estate development firm and previously co-founded a private equity company. Both roles suggest significant financial success, and according to Forbes, these aren’t his only sources of income.

A March 2025 Forbes feature on the couple’s wealth disclosed that Wakefield holds partial ownership in two apartment complexes and a shopping center. While his stakes in two properties range between $100,000 and $250,000 and the third between $500,000 and $1 million, these investments still represent substantial value. Additionally, Forbes highlighted that Wakefield and Bondi collectively boast a $1 million fortune, a testament to their comfortable lifestyle, bolstered by their influence within MAGA circles.

In a March 2025 profile on the couple’s wealth, Forbes revealed that Wakefield was a partial owner of two apartment estates and a shopping complex. Granted, the outlet also pointed out that Wakefield’s stakes in two of the properties were valued at between $100,000 and $250,000, while the other was valued at between $500,000 and $1 million, but that’s still an impressive valuation. And that wasn’t all. Forbes also noted that both Wakefield and his political missus had a whopping $1 million in their accounts. Like we said, fairly cushy, and that’s not even taking into account his and Bondi’s social capital in MAGA-land.

Bondi shared insights into their social connections, noting, “All the spouses on the cabinet have become friends,” and highlighted Wakefield’s camaraderie with Rachel Campos-Duffy, wife of Sean Duffy. Bondi added that Wakefield has bonded with other political spouses, such as Kelly Loeffler’s husband, and is keen on connecting with Abe, Tulsi Gabbard’s husband. “It’s really fun,” she remarked.

John Wakefield seems to be close with the MAGA crowd

With Trump mentioning Bondi’s move to the private sector, it’s conceivable that her network might assist in securing her next role, given her previous collaboration with Susie Wiles before assuming the AG position. This connection could allow Bondi and Wakefield to sustain their luxurious lifestyle. Yet, there’s a chance that the camaraderie among MAGA spouses may have cooled towards Wakefield, potentially limiting their ability to leverage these relationships. Regardless, Wakefield’s independent financial cushion seems ample to maintain their affluent status.

“All the spouses on the cabinet, they’ve all become friends,” Bondi gushed to Miller, adding that Wakefield and Sean Duffy’s wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, got on great. That wasn’t all, though, as Bondi shared, “All the men — Jeff, Kelly Loeffler’s husband — they’ve all become good friends. And you know, John’s trying to get together with Abe, Tulsi [Gabbard’s] husband, and it’s really fun.”

With that in mind, perhaps when Trump said Bondi would be going into the private sector, he meant someone in the high-profile squad would help her find a new gig (after all, she did previously work with Susie Wiles before becoming U.S. AG). That would mean she and Wakefield could keep on keeping on with their boujie lifestyles without too much of a worry. However, there’s also a possibility the MAGA spouses squad isn’t quite as welcoming to Wakefield anymore, so we wouldn’t necessarily bank on them being able to use those connections. Just as well he has those nest eggs of his own, then.

Nonprofit Executive Received Ominous Letter Prior to Being Discovered Deceased with Spouse

A well-known nonprofit leader, devoted to combating crime and fostering economic development in Santa Monica, was discovered dead in his residence this week alongside his wife.

Jeremy Ferguson, who held the position of director of operations at Downtown Santa Monica Inc., and his 49-year-old wife, Mandy Zelinka, both succumbed to gunshot injuries, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The authorities are treating the incident at their Venice home as a murder-suicide, as confirmed by the LAPD.

The LAPD responded to a report of a shooting on the 600 block of Superba Avenue at 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, according to coverage by the LA Times.

While the investigation is ongoing, police revealed that Ferguson had sent a suicide note via email to a friend, which included details on how to access the home, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.

That friend then went to the home, stumbled upon what happened, and called the police.

Debbie Lee, the chief executive of Downtown Santa Monica, said in a statement on Wednesday that employees are heartbroken over the death of Ferguson.

‘Jeremy was a cherished member of our team and a true champion for Downtown Santa Monica,’ she said. ‘His passion for placemaking and the dedication he brought to his work each day made a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed.’

MEMORISE: But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying. – Psalm 70:5 (KJV)

READ: 2 Kings 6:1-7 (KJV)

1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

2 Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

3 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.

4 So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.

5 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.

6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

7 Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Kings 19-21

Open Heaven 25 April 2026 MESSAGE

It is very important for children of God to know the things they can do to attract God’s help. The Bible is filled with several accounts of how people attracted God’s help, and over the next few days, I will be discussing some of these accounts and things you can do to attract divine help.

In today’s Bible reading, the sons of the prophets were felling wood by River Jordan when the axe head of the axe that one of them was using fell into the river. The man cried to the man of God for help, and God stepped in to remedy the situation. God helps those who cry to Him for help. In Psalm 3:4, David said, “I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.” Also, in Mark 10:46-52, Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus, and despite attempts by some people around him to shut him up, he refused to be silenced. As a result of his persistent cries for help, Jesus had mercy on him, and he received his sight.

Sometimes, when I see people praying nonchalantly, I wonder if they really want God’s help. If you really want to receive help from the only One who can truly come to your aid, you must shun pride and approach Him humbly for help. (2 Chronicles 7:14) says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

I remember when I just joined The Redeemed Christian Church of God. During a service, somebody on the altar said, “Praise the Lord,” and the fellow who was sitting beside me shouted ‘Hallelujah’ so loudly that I almost ran out of the church. Beloved, don’t let anything prevent you from being fervent in the things of God. When it is time to praise Him, dance with all the strength within you. Also, when it is time to pray, let your focus be on Him alone. When you are in the presence of your Maker, nothing else should matter. Believe me, God is still in the business of performing miracles as He did in the days of old. If you humbly cry out to Him in prayers, He will indeed arise to help you.

Open Heaven 25 April 2026 HYMN 15 – Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour

1 Pass me not, O gentle Savior
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

2 Let me at a throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition
Help my unbelief.

3 Trusting only in Thy merit
Would I seek Thy face
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

4 Thou the Spring of all my comfort
More than life to me
Whom have I on earth beside Thee
Whom in heav’n but Thee?

DCLM Daily Manna 25 April 2026 — Seek Christ While He’s Near

DCLM Daily Manna 25 April 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Seek Christ While He’s Near

TOPIC: Seek Christ While He’s Near (DCLM Daily Manna 25 April 2026)

KEY VERSE: I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not – Song Of Solomon 3:2

TEXT: Song Of Solomon 3:1-5 (KJV)

1 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.

2 I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.

3 The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?

4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.

5 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Many times, we leave undone things that should demand our urgent attention. We desire a better and more opportune time. But it never comes, because in reality, the best time to attend to matters of such importance is now. Immediate action bears bountiful fruits, while procrastination results in huge losses and sometimes, avoidable suffering and pain.

The personality in our passage represents the Church of Jesus Christ. She faced sore trials, personal discomfort and inconvenience in her search for her beloved Saviour and Lord. Her account shows that we cannot find Christ by merely sitting in the cool comfort of our private space. While in bed, probably in a dream, she sought the Lord whom she loved so much, but did not find Him. Disappointed, she rose up and headed into the city, even at a most inconvenient hour. She walked the streets and highways all to no avail. She ran into the watchmen of the city, whose job it was to apprehend missing people, but they were of no help in searching out those who had lost their way. She continued her search, and only a short distance from the watchmen, she found her beloved. Holding tightly to him, and without letting him out of her sight, she brought him home. Wearied from his wandering, he quickly fell asleep. She, in turn, promptly warned all potential intruders to steer clear of her beloved and allow him to take a deserved rest.

We must desire fellowship with Christ more than anything else in life. And where this fellowship is broken either because of carelessness or deliberate disobedience and rebellion, you must arise and “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near”. You should spare no effort, search for Him with all your heart, and never give up until you have the witness of the Holy Spirit that He has accepted you, and that the peace and comfort of God now rest in your soul. If you are a watchman, a minister in the house of God, you must not be merely satisfied with putting up an appearance in your duty post. Do all you can to bring lost and wandering souls back to the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Christ’s arms are wide enough to embrace all who come to Him.

Wicked Star Marissa Bode Alleges Discrimination: Denied Boarding by Southern Airways Due to Wheelchair

0

Marissa Bode, known for her role in “Wicked,” recently spoke out against Southern Airways, accusing the airline of denying her boarding due to her disability. Bode, who has relied on a wheelchair since a car accident at the age of 11, shared her experience on TikTok, expressing her frustration and disappointment.

The 25-year-old actress recounted the incident, which occurred during a layover while she was en route to a speaking engagement in Pennsylvania. Her journey started smoothly with United Airlines, but complications arose when she attempted to board her connecting flight with Southern Airways, a regional carrier operating in just eight states.

Upon reaching the gate, Bode approached the airline staff for assistance with her boarding pass. “I got to the gate and was like, ‘Hey, could you help me locate my boarding pass?’” she explained, detailing the moment things began to unravel.

Describing the ordeal as “awful,” Bode has been vocal about her experience, seeking to raise awareness about the challenges faced by travelers with disabilities. Her account has sparked discussions on social media, highlighting the ongoing issues of accessibility and inclusivity in air travel.

“I got to the gate and was like, ‘Hey, could you help me locate my boarding pass?’” she said.

“And the two people at the gate look at me and they’re like, ‘Can you stand?’ And I said, ‘No.’ And they said, ‘I’m sorry, because of that we’re gonna have to deny you boarding.’”

Bode said she was stunned by the explanation that followed.

“They proceeded to tell me all the planes within this airline have stairs to get on the plane. Wild. Never heard of that before … You’re telling me none of the people who have flown on your plane before are disabled?”

She went on to call the situation “blatant segregation,” adding that staff also raised concerns about her 35-pound wheelchair.

The actress said her team had already coordinated with the airline before the trip.

“My manager spoke to them beforehand and they fully assured that I would be set for my flight,” she said, suggesting the denial came despite prior arrangements.

“It is always something when I’m flying,” she said. “It is very rare that I’m flying and there isn’t a problem with my chair or I’m not talked down to.”

She added that the situation went beyond a simple mix-up.

“It’s so much more than bad communication,” she said. “It’s so much more than a mistake. These are our lives. This is our entire existence you’re talking about. My wheelchair is my freedom.”

Bode also addressed how she felt reacting in the moment.

“And of course when I’m crying out of frustration and talking to the people at the gate very firmly, I look like a crazy person,” she continued. “I look like the one that’s in the wrong.”

Ultimately, she had no choice but to make the trip by car instead.

“I had to drive three and a half hours to get to my destination,” she said, before blasting the airline directly: “You should be ashamed of yourself.”

“And airlines as a whole, once again, do f—ing better,” she added.

Under the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines are prohibited from discriminating against passengers with disabilities and are required to assist, including help with boarding and connections.

However, Southern Airways’ contract of carriage states that passengers “must be able to ascend and descend several steps” due to the design of its smaller aircraft, which typically carry fewer than 30 passengers.

The airline notes that it is not required under federal law to provide mechanical lifts in those cases, though ramps may sometimes be available.

The incident comes as Bode continues to gain visibility following her role as Nessarose in “Wicked.”

After the original film’s release in 2024, she faced backlash online tied to her character, with some viewers criticizing Nessarose as a “bad sister” to Elphaba — commentary that spilled into hateful comments about her disability.

“Aggressive comments and jokes about Nessa’s disability itself is deeply uncomfortable, because disability is not fictional,” Bode said at the time.
