This time shift is intended to extend evening daylight during the summer months. As winter nears, the clocks fall back to allocate more daylight to the morning hours.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to what you need to know as daylight saving time wraps up for the year.
When does daylight saving time end this year?
In 2026, daylight saving time will officially end on Sunday, April 5th, at 3 a.m. AEDT.
At this time, clocks will be set back one hour to 2 a.m., granting Australians an extra hour of sleep. This effectively means that the hour between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. will occur twice, lengthening the night by an hour.
Daylight saving time occurs every year from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.
From this Sunday, mornings will be brighter as the sun rises earlier due to the clock adjustment.
Which states and territories observe daylight saving?
It’s up to individual states and territories to decide whether they wish to observe it, but those a bit further from the equator have adopted the time zone change.

How do the time zones change?
When daylight saving ends, Australia effectively loses two of its five time zones. Here’s how it will look from 5 April:
Queensland, NSW, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania will be in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).
Northern Territory, South Australia and Broken Hill (NSW) will be in Australian Central Standard Time (ACST), which is half an hour behind AEST.
Western Australia will remain on Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), which is two hours behind AEST and 1.5 hours behind ACST.
Daylight saving time will return on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
US Coast Guard and Puerto Rican air crews rescue 5 people
A daring rescue unfolded when U.S. Coast Guard and Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action air crews sprang into action to save three federal agents and two others after their vessels overturned Tuesday night in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. (U.S. Coast Guard Southeast via X)
What began as a routine operation quickly turned dangerous as two boats capsized in the waters off Puerto Rico, leaving five individuals, among them three federal agents, at the mercy of tumultuous seas. Fortunately, all were successfully retrieved without injury.
Authorities confirmed the safety of the three agents and the two additional individuals, emphasizing that no one else was unaccounted for.
The incident came to light just after 9 p.m. when Coast Guard personnel at Sector San Juan received a report from Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action about a vessel capsizing near Isla de Cabras in Toa Baja. This triggered an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) to alert nearby maritime traffic, according to official reports.
In response, the Coast Guard deployed a 45-foot Response Boat Medium from Station San Juan and dispatched a MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter to carry out the rescue operation.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Caribbean Air and Marine Branch Marine Unit and a Puerto Rico Police Joint Force of Rapid Action (FURA) helicopter were also dispatched.

A short time later, a good Samaritan reported seeing a 22-foot capsized vessel and two people holding onto the boat, officials said. He provided a position for response units, while a Puerto Rico police helicopter crew tracked down the capsized vessel.
As the CBP marine unit approached the boaters in 10-foot swells to attempt the rescue, their vessel also capsized, throwing the three agents into the water.
The Station San Juan boat crew tried to reach the agents and boaters but were unable due to the deteriorated sea state and the original capsized vessel being beyond the reef line.

As the Coast Guard helicopter responded, the Puerto Rico police helicopter crew rescued one of the boaters and one of the CBP agents, taking them to Isla de Cabras.
The Coast Guard aircrew then deployed their rescue swimmer and safely hoisted the remaining two agents and boater safely aboard the aircraft.
The survivors were taken to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, where they were received by awaiting Puerto Rico Emergency Medical Service personnel and treated for minor injuries.
“The quick actions by FURA and CBP AMO allowed for constant eyes on all five people in the water and their prompt rescue,” said Lt. David Tirado-Tolosa, Coast Guard Air Station MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircraft commander.
“This mission highlights the high-risk environment our crews, federal and local partners face every time they respond to a search and rescue. We are very glad everyone made it home safely, as this could have easily had a different outcome.”

Cmdr. Zach Geyer, Coast Guard Sector San Juan Search and Rescue mission coordinator, added the case highlights the dangers rescue professionals face coming to the aid of mariners in peril.
“The responding CBP asset crew exemplified the courageous effort our federal and local responders make in a deliberate and calculated risk decision to save two individuals in immediate danger of death,” Geyer said.
“Through strong coordination across agencies, including CBP, FURA, the Caribbean Air and Marine Operations Center and the Federal Aviation Administration, responders safely de-conflicted a congested airspace and ultimately saved lives.”

(NEXSTAR) — With the 2026 Winter Olympics concluded, the U.S. athletes have returned home from Milan, still buzzing from their impressive performances.
“I’m over the moon,” shares Hilary Knight, a seasoned Olympian who captained Team USA’s women’s hockey team. “Waking up back in the U.S., I keep thinking, ‘Did we actually win?’ It feels surreal.”
Having secured two gold medals and now holding the record for the most goals in U.S. Olympic women’s hockey, Knight had previously hinted that the 2026 games might be her swan song. But has her time in Milan made her reconsider?
The next Winter Olympics are set to take place in the French Alps in 2030, just four years away.
“Right now, I’m thinking this is the end,” Knight admits. “But am I still capable? Absolutely, 1000%. There’s no doubt I could compete for another four years. Plus, my teammates have been nudging me, saying, ‘Just do two more years, then two more…’ So, we’ll see how things unfold.”
She says while she knows she’s capable of continuing to compete, she sees the appeal of choosing how she gets to go out as a professional athlete.
Meanwhile, Team USA speed skater Erin Jackson, who became the first Black woman to earn a gold medal in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics, is still recovering from a special honor she received from her team in Milan. Her own team nominated her to be an official Olympic flag-bearer for the U.S. at the opening ceremony.
And Jackson, a three-time Olympian, actually got to do it!
“Being able to actually carry the flag in that moment and to lead Team USA into the games, it was a real honor. It’s hard to put that into words. I was just smiling the entire time. It was just a whirlwind.”
While Jackson didn’t medal this year, she says she’s ready to take care of some physical issues she’s having and will be “ready” for the 2030 games.

A couple from North Carolina faces serious allegations of child abuse, with accusations detailing some of the most appalling conditions prosecutors have encountered. The couple, 34-year-old Lacy Douglas Hocutt Jr. and 33-year-old Rachelleigh Marie Galasso, were arrested this week and face multiple felony charges. Hocutt has been charged with nine counts of statutory rape, whereas Galasso faces four counts of negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily harm, according to court documents.
The alarming situation came to light following a report in February, which triggered an investigation. This led authorities to remove six children, aged 1 to 15, from the couple’s home. The investigation uncovered shocking details, particularly regarding a 13-year-old child who was allegedly kept in a dog kennel. This child was reportedly found in a severely underweight condition that posed a life-threatening risk.
Further revelations, reported by Raleigh-Durham’s NBC affiliate WRAL, indicated that when officials inspected the home in February, they discovered the 13-year-old covered in feces and suffering from an E. coli infection, necessitating urgent medical attention. The conditions within the home were so hazardous that investigators needed to wear protective gear to enter, highlighting the dire state of the environment.
The gravity of this case has struck a chord with prosecutors, who have described the abuse and neglect as extraordinarily severe, underscoring the critical need for intervention and justice for the affected children.
The disturbing details did not end there. Prosecutors described the conditions inside the residence as so unsanitary that investigators had to wear protective gear when entering.
“When CPS and the sheriff’s office went out there, it was so filthy that investigators had to wear protective gear,” an assistant district attorney said in court Thursday, according to WRAL.
Authorities also revealed the psychological toll the alleged abuse had on the children. The teenager who was allegedly confined in the kennel now exhibits troubling behavior.
“He now rocks back and forth, and all he yells is, ‘You’re never getting out. You’re never getting out,’ which we can only assume is what was screamed at him while he was in there,” the prosecutor told the court.
Additional allegations outlined in court records paint a broader picture of neglect. Multiple children reportedly suffered from severe dental issues to the point where they could not eat without pain and will require ongoing treatment.
Prosecutors also said none of the children had received any formal schooling and were unable to read or write.
The News & Observer reported that Galasso neglected a teen child’s scoliosis so severely that her condition is now “beyond the point that she can be treated with surgical intervention and will have to suffer from the condition for the remainder of her life.”
Another two children had such poor dental hygiene that they both had to have several of their adult teeth removed and reportedly cannot chew solid food without pain.
Hocutt is accused of sexually abusing one of the female children for years, with the first incident reportedly taking place in 2017, according to the News & Observer.
In court, prosecutors emphasized the severity of the case, describing the alleged conduct as some of the most egregious they have encountered.
Both defendants appeared in court Thursday and were appointed public defenders. If convicted, Hocutt is facing a possible life sentence.
The defendants are being held without bond and are scheduled to return to court on April 23.
A tragic incident unfolded as a man lost his life to electrocution during an alleged attempt to steal copper wire from utility lines. His partner in the crime, a long-time friend, was apprehended after attempting to flee.
Jerry Hendrickson now faces charges of abandoning a corpse following the death of his friend, Cody Lashly, according to a press release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri. In addition to this charge, Hendrickson is also accused of attempting to steal property valued at $750 or more and causing damage to a crucial infrastructure facility. Details from court documents have not clarified whether Hendrickson has entered a plea.
The grim discovery occurred on March 22 when a worker inspecting power lines along Labadie Power Plant Road found an unresponsive man, later identified as 34-year-old Lashly. According to a probable cause affidavit, Lashly had fresh burn marks on his left hand and the right side of his face.
Authorities allege that Lashly was in the process of cutting and stealing copper wire from the utility lines. At the scene, police found a power tool attached to a pole, a snapped utility pole, and downed power lines.
Further investigation led to the discovery of broken vehicle side mirror pieces, which were traced to a Dodge Ram truck. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the truck arriving at the scene with two occupants and departing with only one.
Hendrickson allegedly admitted to police that he drove Lashly to the scene and allowed him to stand on the bed of his truck to access the wire, the press release noted. During that process, a utility pole snapped which caused live electrical lines to hit Lashly’s body and electrocute him to death.
Police said Hendrickson fled the scene out of fear, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Oxygen could not locate an attorney for Hendrickson. His next court date is April 16.

Now, 99 remains active and happy. Daniels recently sat down to talk about his monumental birthday, and he revealed exactly what keeps him young. He is crediting his fans and Cameo.
William Daniels shares how Cameo keeps him busy as he turns 99
William Daniels might be 99 years old, but he is not a man who took retirement terribly seriously. Daniels picks and chooses a few select projects to work on these days, but he has always remained connected to his fans. In fact, Daniels recently suggested that his fans and the work he does for them have helped keep him young.
Ahead of his 99th birthday, Daniels sat down with People to discuss everything from his career to what he thinks it will feel like to turn 100. Daniels isn’t too worried about turning 100, but he did share what he does to stay young. The beloved actor said he fills his days filming Cameos for his fans around the world. He told the outlet that the Cameos are part of his secret to staying young at heart, despite having turned 99 on March 31. He said, “It allows me to perform, which demands a certain amount of energy and focus. I think that’s good for me. I like being productive.”
His family keeps him busy, too
While Boy Meets World fans and the Cameos they order have helped the actor fill his days, his life is also filled with a loving family. Did you know that William Daniels has the longest marriage in Hollywood history? Fans even know his wife. Williams and his wife, Bonnie Bartlett, have worked together several times over the years. The actors, who married in 1951, will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary in just a few months. Their love has clearly helped sustain both of them.
Bartlett, who Boy Meets World fans might recognize as Dean Bolander, is 96. Together, they have two sons. While they live elsewhere now, the family remains close, with Daniels regularly sharing updates about his kids and grandkids on Instagram. They were even planning to sneak in a family reunion ahead of the actor’s birthday. Daniels told People that his sons would be traveling, with thier families, to visit him for his 99th birthday. The planned celebration was one he was looking forward to.
Tina* was unaware of the penalties she incurred until weeks after they were issued, and her husband claims that a human officer would not have fined her at all if they had stopped her.
The first instance occurred when an AI-operated camera captured her on November 30 last year.

The camera caught her driving with a seatbelt positioned under her arm along the Kwinana Freeway in the southern suburbs of Perth.
Within the following three weeks, the same camera recorded Tina three additional times with her seatbelt improperly fastened.
It wasn’t until over a month later, in January, that she was informed of the four nearly identical fines that arrived in her mailbox.
“All of a sudden we get a flurry, a rampage of tickets generated by an artificially intelligent machine with no human intervention,” her husband James told nine.com.au.
A WA Department of Transport spokesperson told nine.com.au that “while all infringements are usually issued within one month of capture, this timeframe may vary depending on the number of incidents”.
Tina is now facing three $550 fines and 16 demerit points (one of the offences had been during a double demerit period).
It’s enough to have her licence suspended.

James has also been slugged with a $550 fine and eight demerit points for an infringement when Tina was in the passenger seat.
He said none of the fines would have been issued if a human had pulled them over.
Tina has a medical condition that affects her ability to wear a seatbelt across her chest, according to a medical referral sighted by nine.com.au.
“Had she been warned by a human police officer she could explain, ‘sorry officer, I’ve got a medical certificate,’” James said.
But that’s not an option when an AI camera is responsible for issuing fines.
Now they’re worried Tina will lose her licence.
That would be devastating for the stay-at-home mum, especially because James does fly-in, fly-out work.
”I work away, my wife wouldn’t be able to go anywhere or do anything,” James said.
“How is she meant to go about her daily life?”

He and Tina requested that the fines be reviewed as soon as they arrived.
James claimed he’s made up to 20 calls to the Department of Transport trying to explain Tina’s medical situation.
Some Australians may be issued a seatbelt exemption medical certificate by a doctor for a medical condition or disability.
WA’s Department of Transport told nine.com.au these certificates must be signed by a registered medical practitioner and be current at the time of the alleged offence.
The certificate must say that the person is unable to wear a seatbelt for a specific qualifying medical reason, or that it would be unreasonable to require the wearing of a seatbelt due to the person’s size, build or other physical characteristic.
The certificate must be carried whenever in a vehicle.
“If a driver (or their passenger) has a current, valid medical exemption and has been issued a seat belt infringement, they can email DTMI’s Infringement Services area with the details, and attach the exemption certificate,” a Department spokesperson said.
At the time of writing, only one of Tina’s infringements had been reviewed.
It was rejected, meaning she will have to pay the $550 fine and cop the demerit points, or take the matter to court.
“If I were to elect to go to court and we were to fail, we get an additional $350 added on top of the actual fine,” James said.
“If we had a human being pull the car over, none of this would have ever happened.”

“At any age, weight training alone won’t specifically target belly fat. The most effective approach to managing body fat and its distribution lies in proper nutrition,” Tateossian explains. “Consistently consuming balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats throughout the day is key to regulating belly fat and overall body composition. Remember, as the saying goes, ‘You cannot spot reduce fat from specific areas of your body. Fat loss occurs all over, and sometimes the belly is the last area to show changes.’”
“Weight training at any age will not get target belly fat anywhere on the body. The most optimal way to control body fat and fat distribution throughout the body is through nutrition,” Tateossian stresses. “Adequate amounts of protein, carbs, and fat dosed throughout the day at equal intervals and done consistently will help manage belly fat and overall body fat. And of course, the old saying goes, ‘You cannot spot reduce fat from specific parts of the body. We lose fat all over and sometimes the belly can be the last place we see changes.’”
Exercises like hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts are compound movements. According to Tateossian, they don’t completely engage the deep core muscles in a targeted manner.
“While the core is used to stabilize the body during those compound moves, it is not directly targeted. But that does not mean you can’t get strong abs doing them,” she adds.
Why a Dreaded ‘Belly Pooch’ Tends To Become More Common With Age

Some of the main physiological reasons behind belly fat gain after 60 have to do with certain lifestyle and hormonal factors.
“As our hormones change, fat distribution in the body changes and we tend to store more fat around our belly. That is if we don’t take steps to actively prevent what naturally happens as we age. Below are Tateossian’s favorite exercises for deep core activation and to sculpt a stellar six-pack at any age. Of course, it’s essential to pair these recommended moves with a healthy, protein-packed diet.
Standing Straight Leg Raises
Begin standing tall with your feet hip-width apart.
Hold onto a sturdy chair or wall for optional support.
Keep your left leg straight as you lift it as high as you’re comfortably able to, all while maintaining tall posture.
Use control to lower for 3 seconds.
Repeat on the other side.
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each leg. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.
Standing Marches With Band
Position a resistance band around your ankles or the arches of your feet.
Stand tall with your feet hip-distance apart and core engaged.
Begin to march in place, lifting one knee up toward your chest at a time, ensuring the band stays taut.
Use control as you lower for 3 seconds.
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each leg. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.
Overhead Reach With Pilates Ball
Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
Hold a Pilates ball overhead.
Gradually lower the ball toward one side of your body for 3 seconds, keeping the core tight.
Return to the start position.
Lower the ball toward the opposite side and continue to alternate.
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each side. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.
Diagonal Chops
Stand tall, feet shoulder-distance apart.
Hold a Pilates ball high over your right shoulder.
Breathe in, chopping the ball down diagonally toward your opposite foot and bending your knees.
Reverse the motion.
Repeat on the other side.
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each side. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.

Melania appeared in a chic Dolce and Gabbana buttoned dress paired with black stilettos. She was accompanied by Donald Trump and an array of celebrities and political figures, including Dr. Phil, Nicki Minaj, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
On the red carpet, President Trump remarked to reporters, “This brings back memories of the days when the Academy Awards actually had viewership.”
But there was a notable absence. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was slated to attend, did not appear on the red carpet as she faces intense pressure to resign after the fatal shooting of a protester by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday.
Trump showered praise on Noem’s rival Tom Homan, newly installed to lead the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. ‘I think he’s terrific,’ Trump said, adding: ‘But we have to get rid of the criminals.’
