The individual accused of shooting NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller to death during a traffic stop in Queens two years ago has been acquitted of first-degree murder charges. However, he has been convicted of manslaughter along with several other offenses.

On Wednesday, Guy Rivera was found guilty of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and attempted first-degree murder for trying to shoot a NYPD sergeant who was also at the scene. Additionally, he was convicted on two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The jury, however, cleared him of the first-degree murder charge.

Earlier that day, the jury announced it had reached a verdict, only to be sent back for further discussions after a juror expressed that the decision was not unanimous.

Initially, the jury foreman informed the judge that they had decided on a not-guilty verdict for the first-degree murder charge but found Rivera guilty of the remaining charges. However, during a poll of the jurors conducted by the court clerk, juror No. 5 indicated disagreement with the verdict, according to the New York Post.

“As I told you jurors, your verdict must be unanimous. Please go back in and deliberate,” Judge Michael Aloise told the jury, the outlet reported.

A short time later, a couple of notes were sent in from the jury — one asking how many days they would have to deliberate if they were unable to reach a verdict that day and another in which one juror said she needed to make a phone call to cancel an appointment.

“There is no time limit, continue deliberating,” the judge told them.

Later on Wednesday, the jury came back and agreed on the verdict.

Authorities said Diller and his partner, Sergeant Sasha Rosen, stopped a vehicle illegally parked outside a cell phone store in Far Rockaway in March 2024. Prosecutors said Rivera then shot and killed Diller after being ordered to step out of the vehicle.

After shooting Diller, Rivera pointed his gun at Rosen’s chest and pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed, prosecutors said. Diller wrestled the gun away from his hand before he collapsed on the street from his injuries.

Rivera was also shot twice during the encounter.

Diller was scheduled to be off duty the day of the killing. He was at a park with his wife and young son when he was called in.

“The last words Detective Jonathan Diller told his wife were ‘I love you,’” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. “Detective Diller was a father, a husband and a son. He was also a dedicated member of the New York City Police Department who put on a uniform every day to protect our city.”

“This crime stole the life of a dutiful officer and a family man and endangered the life of a devoted NYPD sergeant,” the statement added. “We continue to stand in solidarity with Detective Diller’s loved ones, Sergeant Sasha Rosen and all the brave men and women who protect our city.”

Howie Mandel has expressed his regret over apologizing to Kelly Ripa following their awkward on-air interaction last week. Reflecting on the incident, Mandel admitted, “I don’t believe in apologizing, but as I mentioned in that post, which I somewhat regret, I clearly delivered a joke that fell flat.”

The exchange became a topic of conversation when Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, commented on Mandel’s appearance, prompting his defensive response. “Comedians often say, ‘If you can make one person laugh, you’re doing your job,’ but apparently, that’s not enough. It’s not sufficient,” Mandel explained during an interview on Tuesday’s episode of “Hot Mics with Billy Bush.”

He continued, “So, you liked my joke. I’m reading the reactions, and there’s no stopping it. I don’t understand it, and I tried to halt it. I attempted to apologize. I agreed with people. I really did.”

Mandel expressed his confusion over the situation, adding that he doesn’t “know what’s going on” or “when this will end,” as the backlash from the exchange continues to linger.

The drama started after Mandel seemingly had a negative reaction on last Monday’s “Live with Kelly and Mark,” as the pair congratulated the “America’s Got Talent” judge on his milestone 70th birthday.

The duo complimented the actor on his appearance, to which he replied, “That doesn’t mean anything to me.” The longtime talk show host, 55, attempted to assure the comedian that they weren’t “saying you look great for 70.”

“We’re saying you look great and I don’t believe you’re 70,” Ripa clarified.

Mandel replied, “No, no — it’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person. ‘Oh, you seem smart, you seem smart,’ you see, no, I don’t look good,” as the audience erupted in laughter.

Consuelos, 55, said Mandel does indeed “look good,” with Mandel jokingly agreeing that he’s “gorgeous.”

In an Instagram video on Sunday, Mandel asserted that comedians shouldn’t have to apologize for their jokes — but for Ripa, he made an exception.

“It is a joke. It is meant as a joke, and it’s not meant to offend,” he said in the beachside video, noting that it had been “hard” since he’s never apologized in his 50-year career in comedy.

“But this is for Kelly Ripa, who in the past has been incredibly supportive,” he explained. “Not only have I been a guest on her show, but I have co-hosted with her and I’ve known her for years.”

He also said his jokes aren’t always received well. “When I go out there I just try to be entertaining and funny, and sometimes as a comedian things don’t land the way you mean them to land,” he divulged.

“Not only do I want to say I’m sorry to Kelly — and this is the hardest part — you’re right,” he went on. “You’re absolutely right, and I’m sorry I didn’t see it that way.”

Mandel concluded the video by quipping, “And after a lot of thought and self-reflection, I look great for my age. I really do. I look fantastic and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good.”

“Live With Kelly and Mark” executive producer Michael Gelman then poked fun at the drama while commenting on Mandel’s post.

“During these divided times, one thing we can all agree upon is that you do look great … for your age,” he quipped.

In a troubling incident on Chicago’s South Side, a young girl was among three individuals wounded in a shooting, according to the police.

The victims fortunately managed to survive what was described as a hail of bullets and were reported to be in stable condition following the attack.

The shooting took place shortly after 4:45 p.m. at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center, situated at the intersection of East 35th Street and South King Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood, right outside a Baskin Robbins and Subway.

Police reported that those injured included an 8-year-old girl, a 28-year-old woman, and a 24-year-old man. They were present at the location when a dark-colored SUV pulled up, and someone inside the vehicle opened fire on them.

The young girl sustained a gunshot wound to her foot, the woman was hit in the knee, and the man suffered multiple gunshot injuries affecting his arm and chest. All three were transported to local hospitals and are currently in good condition, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Storefronts were left shattered with glass and bullet casings strewn across the South Side parking lot where the three people were nearly killed.

The shooting happened in the Lake Meadows Shopping Center near 35th & King Drive in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, right outside a Dunkin’ and Baskin Robbin’s and a Subway restaurant.

“It’s really saddening to know that kids are always never safe,” shopping center patron Ruwaida Henry said.

Their lives were spared, yet concern lingered with patrons of the busy shopping center.

“I hope for this to end,” Henry said. “We don’t have to be concerned about our safety all the time. A trip to the coffee shop, the Subway, the nail shop shouldn’t be this frightening.”

Chicago police haven’t said if anyone was taken into custody, only adding that area detectives are investigating
