The fuel excise is a fixed tax imposed by the federal government on petrol and diesel, collected from fuel producers and importers.

This excise, currently at 52.6 cents per litre, is ultimately paid by consumers at the pump and typically supports government funding for various services, including certain road infrastructure projects.

Following a 2.5-hour meeting with state and territory leaders, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared the excise would be halved for three months, beginning on Wednesday.

This move is part of a comprehensive four-stage National Security Plan, addressing concerns about future shortages and price surges resulting from the ongoing Strait of Hormuz blockade, which has led to localised panic buying and supply issues.

“The government understands that people are really worried, but we have a plan to get through this,” Albanese said in Question Time.

He described the plan as “voluntary action, coupled with new supply measures, that will make a difference and make sure that fuel continues to get to those who need it most”.

The Opposition, who have been proposing a halving of the fuel excise since last week, welcomed the plan but said it was “overdue”.

Liberal leader Angus Taylor reiterated the calls before the crisis talks.

The suggestion was widely rejected by economists who said it could drive up inflation, with some now warning that it makes another rate hike more certain.

How much will you save?

Treasury estimates the move will reduce the cost of a 65-litre tank by roughly $19 — at a $2.55 billion hit to the budget.

However, NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said this benefit will be “eaten up” by price rises over the last seven days alone.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) weekly report found that the price of diesel rose an average 27.8 cents per litre, pushing it above $3 in the week leading up to 25 March.

Meanwhile, regular unleaded petrol across Australia’s five largest cities increased to an average of $2.52, a hike of 18.1 cents per litre for the same period.

“We never thought the fuel excise should be a lever that you pull to provide relief at the bowser every time oil prices go up,” Khoury said.

AMP’s chief economist Shane Oliver estimates the excise cut will save the average household $9 a week.

He highlights that Australians have been paying an extra $22 a week for petrol since February due to price hikes, and that this figure “could still rise a lot further”.

Since the war began on 28 February, regular unleaded petrol has on average increased by 40 per cent, with diesel up 72 per cent.

Will this reduce or drive up inflation?

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the government expected the measures to reduce headline inflation by about half a percentage point.

The annual Consumer Price Index (CPI), largely used to measure household inflation, eased slightly to 3.7 per cent in February, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Chalmers acknowledged that previous Treasury assumptions now looked “conservative”, with modelling based on crude oil being $US100 ($146) and $US120 ($175) a barrel.

He said this would have seen inflation reach the high fours or low fives. However, crude oil is already trading at $US116 ($169) a barrel.

Oliver agrees that the rise in inflation will 0.5 per cent less in the short term, but says this still leaves a 1.2 per cent boost due to petrol prices since February levels.

He predicts inflation will rise above 5 per cent year-on-year and says “if oil and petrol prices keep rising, then it will be a minor respite”.

‘A mistake’: A fuel cut or mortgage rate hike?

Richard Holden, scientia professor of economics at UNSW Business School, labelled the fuel excise cut “a mistake”.

“I understand people are under a lot of household financial pressure, [but] we need to be taking demand out of the system, rather than putting it into the system,” he told SBS News.

He labelled Chalmers’ reassurances that this would drive down inflation as “disingenuous”, likening it to the effect of electricity bill subsidies.

“It’s government spending going into the economy. And when there’s more spending in the economy, when there are scarce resources, prices go up,” he told SBS News.

He said while it may offer household relief, this “leads spending to shift into other categories, rather than being constrained”.

Holden warned that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), already tipped to be considering a third consecutive rate hike, would be “pushed further in that direction”.

Also pointing to the electricity subsidies as an example, Luke Hartigan, a senior lecturer in economics at the University of Sydney, said the RBA would see through temporary relief measures.

“They’ll be looking more at the core measure and inflation, which will strip out any changes, if there’s a large increase or decrease,” he said.

“I think the bank is still on a bit of a tightening bias, because they’re really concerned about expectations of inflation… but uncertainty around the globe could mean that they potentially wait.”

Hartigan agreed with Holden that while the fuel excise gives Australians a bit more money, he argued that public sentiments are currently “more pessimistic” and could lead to a slowdown in activity.

“It really depends on how people spend that extra income they get or they choose to save it. Usually, when people are uncertain, they tend to save more.”

Federal regulators have accused OkCupid of secretly transferring personal data to a startup company linked to its own founders, subsequently engaging in a lengthy cover-up.

On Monday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiated legal action against OkCupid and its affiliated company, alleging that the dating app clandestinely shared millions of users’ photos, locations, and personal information with an external company. The FTC’s lawsuit claims that this covert data-sharing continued undisclosed for over a decade.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Dallas, targets Humor Rainbow, Inc., the Dallas-based operator of OkCupid, and Match Group Americas, LLC, which supports Humor Rainbow’s operations. Both entities are subsidiaries of Match Group, Inc., the well-known online dating conglomerate that owns Tinder, Hinge, and Match.com, among others.

The allegations center around a data transfer in September 2014, when OkCupid allegedly provided nearly three million user photographs, along with demographic and location details, to Clarifai, Inc., a tech startup. According to the FTC, this transfer was motivated by OkCupid founders’ personal financial interests in Clarifai, rather than any formal business agreement.

“The FTC is committed to enforcing the privacy assurances that companies make,” stated Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “We will investigate and, when necessary, prosecute companies that breach their promise to protect user data.”

At the time of the data transfer, OkCupid’s privacy policy told users the company would not share their personal information “except as indicated in this Privacy Policy or when we inform you and give you an opportunity to opt out.” The policy listed narrow exceptions: service providers, business partners and companies within OkCupid’s corporate family.

Clarifai fit none of those categories. The FTC says OkCupid executed no formal data-sharing agreement with the company, placed no restrictions on how the data could be used and collected no payment in return. Users were never notified and never given the chance to opt out.

What followed the 2014 transfer, regulators allege, was an extended effort to conceal what had happened. When a news outlet began investigating Clarifai’s use of OkCupid data, company executives drafted a statement that obscured the relationship. OkCupid later told users directly that any suggestion it had shared their data with Clarifai was “false.”

The FTC said the concealment efforts included attempting to obstruct the agency’s own investigation, which eventually required the Commission to take OkCupid to federal court just to enforce a demand for records.

As part of a proposed settlement, OkCupid and Match Group Americas are permanently prohibited from misrepresenting their data collection and privacy practices. That includes making false claims about how they collect, use, share or protect personal data such as photos, demographic information and location data, and about what privacy controls users actually have.

OkCupid has not publicly commented on the settlement.

Even with the intensified police deployment, the mall saw hundreds of teenagers flock to its premises on Sunday afternoon, resulting in multiple altercations throughout the area.

Despite the increased police presence, hundreds of teens reportedly descended on the mall Sunday afternoon, causing several fights to break out throughout the area. 

“We’re just trying to assist in prevention,” community leader Vaun Mayes said, according to WTMJ. “There’s been talk online of takeovers here and also at Mayfair. We just want to help security, police, and businesses to alleviate that as best we can.”

One video appears to show a group of youngsters jeering as a fight breaks out outside a Kohl’s department store, with one individual appearing to be shoved through the business’ front doors. 

“Oh my God,” one witness can be heard shouting as the group of teenagers appeared to shove each other outside the store’s entrance while dozens of spectators film the altercation.

Another video shows a group of hooded teens running amok throughout the shopping plaza, throwing punches and fleeing from police as authorities attempted to restore order, according to video obtained by WTMJ. 

Authorities said 13 individuals were taken into custody on charges ranging from disorderly conduct and battery to resisting an officer, the outlet reported.

“There’s gotta be something more formal to prevent this entirely — programming, support, hopefully businesses involved,” Mayes said, according to WTMJ.

Bayshore Mall previously posted a reminder to the public regarding its parental guidance policy, which requires anyone under 17 to be accompanied by an adult when visiting the shopping center Friday through Sunday after 3 p.m., according to WTMJ.

The incident comes as viral “takeover” events publicized on social media are making headlines across the country, with organizers inviting minors to gather in a public area without consulting police or local officials. 

“It’s getting warm, and these are issues that happen all the time,” Mayes said, according to WTMJ. “And we just gotta get ahead of it.”

The Glendale Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

A nurse from Pennsylvania has been accused of violently mishandling a 3-year-old girl who requires constant medical attention. According to allegations, she slammed, slapped, and withheld the child’s tracheostomy tube.

The nurse, identified as 58-year-old Cindy Desser, faces charges of child endangerment. The Bensalem Police Department provided information on the case. A probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime indicated that Desser was hired as an overnight nurse for the child at the family’s residence on Locust Avenue in Bensalem, a suburb of Philadelphia. Last month, the girl’s mother discovered bruises on her daughter’s inner thigh while changing her diaper.

The child was taken to a hospital, where medical professionals identified the bruise as resembling a thumbprint.

Upon inspecting footage from a surveillance camera in the girl’s room, her parents allegedly saw Desser hitting the child multiple times. The footage also reportedly shows Desser “aggressively” handling the girl in her crib. On one occasion, the child supposedly dislodged her tracheostomy tube, and the video purportedly captures Desser delaying its reinsertion while telling the child, “you did this” as she struggled to breathe. The nurse was also seen asleep during her shift, according to the complaint.

Desser is employed by Dynamic Home Health Care. Authorities noted that she violated several company policies and ethical standards.

The girl’s parents, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with local ABC affiliate WPVI. They told the outlet that Desser appealed to them because she had 20 years of experience and took care of another child who had the same lung disease as the girl. The girl was born prematurely and weighed just 14 ounces at birth and is in need of special medical care.

“She likes nights,” the mom told WPVI about Desser. “You don’t find that. It was almost like too good to be true.”

Unfortunately for the girl and her parents, it appears that it was.

Watching the video of their daughter gasping for air after Desser allegedly withheld her tracheostomy tube was especially hard.

“This was the most disturbing one. Thank God my daughter is so strong,” the mother told the outlet. “It was just horrific. I just couldn’t believe it. It’s like almost like monsters come out at night.”

The father called the whole situation a nightmare. Another alleged incident also stood out to him.

“All our little girl did was sit up and look at her for a minute and she got shoved to the ground. It’s really sick and horrible,” he said.

He hopes Desser loses her nursing license and faces justice.

“I just hope she gets to sit in a room with other people that did bad things,” he told WPVI. “A snake can shed its skin so many times and it’s still a snake. So, you gotta watch out.”

WPVI reports that Desser has since been fired from her job. She remains in the Bucks County Jail on a $2 million bond. Her next court date is set for April 7.

The radio duo, who have long dominated Sydney’s airwaves, recently experienced a decline in their audience following a high-profile transition to the Melbourne market.

The partnership between the co-hosts unraveled after an on-air disagreement on February 20. Following the incident, Henderson reportedly stated that she could no longer collaborate with Sandilands.

As a result, both of their contracts were terminated, leading to the cancellation of the show.

In the same statement to its shareholders, ARN addressed Henderson’s allegations that the company made “misleading and deceptive” market statements, a charge that ARN firmly refutes.

The proceedings have been filed in the Federal Court, where Sandilands’ own lawsuit against his former employer was first heard last Friday.

Sandilands revealed his contract had been terminated on March 18, less than an hour before ARN Media confirmed the news in a market announcement published on the Australian Stock Exchange.

“ARN Media advises that it has issued a notice of termination of contract to Mr Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd,” the statement said.

“As a result, the Kyle and Jackie O show will no longer be presented.”

Sandilands said he had apologised to Henderson the night after the on-air argument but claimed ARN had used the rift to “burn the place down”.

The on-air fight began after Jackie O read from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s astrology birth chart and Sandilands complained about her interest in astrology charts.

“I would never say things like that about you,” she said.

Full statement from ARN Media regarding Jackie O’s lawsuit

ARN Media Limited [ASX: A1N] announces that Ms Jacqueline Henderson and her related company have commenced legal proceedings against ARN.

The proceedings have been filed in the Federal Court against Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation Pty Ltd (CBC), a subsidiary of ARN which is the licence holder for KIIS 1065 Sydney and contracted with Ms Henderson and her services company. Unsealed copies of Court documents in respect of the proceedings were served on CBC on 30 March 2026 after market close.

In summary, the applicants claim that the termination of Ms Henderson’s contract constituted adverse action. Ms Henderson sent a ‘Complaint Letter’ to CBC which noted that Ms Henderson “cannot continue to work with Mr Kyle Sandilands” and made psychosocial health and safety and bullying complaints in relation to the conduct of Mr Kyle Sandilands on and prior to 20 February 2026. It is alleged that the Complaint Letter involved the exercise or proposal to exercise workplace rights, and that the contract was terminated because of that exercise or proposed exercise, in alleged contravention of section 340 of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth). It is also alleged the termination of her contract amounted to a repudiation of that agreement.

The applicants also claim that ARN’s ASX Market announcement of 3 March 2026 included misleading and deceptive statements under the Australian Consumer Law. The applicants claim compensation of ‘at least $82,250,000’, and payment of a pecuniary penalty, plus interest and costs.

ARN disputes the claims. It intends to defend the proceedings. Given the early stage of the matter, ARN is unable to reliably estimate the outcome or any potential financial impact.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – In Augusta’s rapidly expanding region, the eagerly anticipated fire station number three is soon to become a reality, much to the relief of local residents.

Patricia Geter, a neighborhood activist from West Augusta 6, expressed the community’s urgent need, stating, “My main concern is quicker response times and ensuring we have a facility that meets the needs of this area.”

Currently, construction activity is in full swing at the site on Gordon Highway at Powell Road. However, progress has been slower than expected.

Originally, the groundbreaking ceremony took place back in April 2024, marking almost two years since the project was initiated.

The delay was primarily due to unforeseen challenges, as the site required stabilization after the removal of over 380 truckloads of construction debris.

“We had to go through some extensive groundwork and I’m of the mindset that you measure twice and cut once so we want to make sure the foundation is set and solid,” said Fire Chief Antonio Burden.

Voters approved sales tax funding for the station way back in 2015, but the city did not award the nearly $5.7 million-dollar construction contract until last November because the original funding was not enough.

“But this is public safety, so we have to make ends meet. We have to find the money to make all of Augusta particular in District 3, 5, Super District 10, and 9 safe,” said commissioner Francine Scott.

It’s what the neighbors around here are ready to see happen before another big fire.

“With it being closer instead of being on Flowing Wells, we’ll have quicker response times,” Geter said.

The contractor saying the goal is to have the station open by Thanksgiving.

Christian County Crime Stoppers is reaching out to the community for assistance in cracking a case involving a burglary that occurred earlier this March.

In the early hours of March 21, deputies from the Sheriff’s department were dispatched to Eagles Nest Pit Stop located at 315 Arch Street in Mount Auburn, responding to an active burglary alarm that went off at 3:40 a.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered evidence of forced entry, including pry marks on the front door. Inside, it was apparent that an unknown individual had gained access and stolen several cartons of cigarettes valued at approximately $2,122.31.
