Inflation could be driven into the mid-sixes as early as June, economists predict, as soaring oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict triggersa price hike ripple-effect across commercial enterprises.

Economists are sounding the alarm that inflation might escalate beyond current expectations, regardless of any potential resolution to the ongoing conflict.
According to Taylor Nugent, a senior economist at NAB who spoke to the Australian Financial Review, “Even if the conflict is resolved swiftly, the impact of the cost shock has already been significant.”
Nugent anticipates that the conflict’s effects will rapidly manifest in various consumer prices.
Belinda Allen, head of Australian economics at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, forecasts that if the global oil benchmark, Brent Crude, remains around $US120 per barrel until June before dropping to $US80, headline inflation could rise to 5.4 percent by June.
However, if Allen’s estimate turns out to be on the lower side and oil prices surge to $150, taking twice as long to decline, inflation could reach a peak of 6.4 percent in June.

NAB economists anticipate headline inflation to reach five per cent in the middle of the year.
“The macro-economic outlook appears to be transitioning towards a more treacherous phase, presenting downside risks to growth,” NAB Chief Economist Dr Sally Auld said.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek addressed the situation during a press conference, stating, “Our DUI investigators arrived at the scene and observed that Mr. Woods displayed signs of impairment. They conducted thorough roadside tests, leading to his arrest and transfer to the Martin County Jail.”
While clarifying that alcohol was not suspected to be a factor, Budensiek noted that Woods’ “lethargic” behavior suggested he may have been under the influence of medication or another substance.
“Mr. Woods did a breathalyzer test, blew triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused,” the sheriff continued, “and so he’s been charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”

The remains of an American Airlines flight attendant, suspected to have fallen prey to a notorious substance known as ‘devil’s breath,’ have been recovered.
Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, aged 32, disappeared on Saturday night while on a layover in Medellín, Colombia.
According to Medellín authorities, Gutierrez Molina ventured out into the El Poblado area with a male and a female colleague. During their outing, they encountered two men who proposed continuing the night at a different venue.
While the male colleague opted out, Gutierrez Molina and the female coworker, referred to only as Andrea, proceeded to another club. Several hours later, Andrea was discovered by officials in a confused state and was subsequently hospitalized.
Subsequently, a body was located ‘between the municipality of Jericó and Puente Iglesias,’ as announced by Mayor Fico Gutiérrez on X.
‘There is a very high probability that it is this person,’ he wrote in Spanish. ‘I have just personally delivered the painful news to his father, who is in Medellín.’
Officials said during a press conference on Thursday that they have since identified the individuals, who they said have a history of stealing from tourists by spiking their drinks with scopolamine, also known as ‘devil’s breath,’ NBCDFW reported.
Scopolamine is commonly used in clinical settings to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery. In higher doses, however, it can cause extreme drowsiness or even loss of consciousness.

Criminals have exploited these effects to incapacitate victims or render them unusually suggestible, making them easier to manipulate.
In Colombia, offenders frequently use the drug to facilitate robberies, sexual assaults and kidnappings. This commonly occurs in nightclubs and bars in major cities such as Bogotá and Medellín.
Scopolamine is derived from a plant that is common in Colombia. The plant’s seeds can be crushed into a tasteless, odorless powder that can be easily mixed into people’s drinks.
According to the US Embassy in Colombia, the drug can leave the victim with no memory after they wake up, making it difficult for them to identify their potential attackers. It can leave a person unconscious for 24 hours or more.
Investigators have released no additional information about the people who were with Gutierrez Molina the night he disappeared, aside from noting their past use of scopolamine.

‘The investigations carried out by the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office are very advanced and they would have very clear leads on those responsible,’ the mayor wrote.

‘I knew immediately, because even though he has his own phone, his work phone could’ve been a second option of communication,’ Carranza told NBCDFW.
‘I messaged him [on Saturday night to] have a good night, be safe, I love you. And he just messaged back: “Okay, I love you back. I’m going to go out and hang with my crews.”‘
Gutierrez Molina’s father traveled to Medellín to look for his son. Authorities have said they have provided him with emotional and legal support.
As Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion unfolds, aiming to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities, the Islamic Republic has retaliated with attacks on nearby Gulf nations. This hasn’t been a one-sided exchange. American and Israeli forces are still disassembling Iranian industry with high explosives.
There were also Israeli strikes on industrial and nuclear sites in Iran on Friday, more Israeli evacuation warnings in Lebanon and threats from the Iran-allied Houthi militia in Yemen of the possibility of opening another front in the war.
Iranian media reported attacks on two nuclear sites, a uranium processing plant and a nuclear research facility, and the Israeli military claimed responsibility for those strikes. Two steel plants and another industrial complex were also hit. Iran threatened to retaliate against industries in the region with American shareholders or ties to Israel.
The steel plant strikes are significant, as what’s left of Iran’s weapons and munitions production, if indeed there is any left, relies on steel. In fact, nothing in the manufacture of weapons and ammunition is possible without steel, so these are logical targets, and it’s worth noting that while American and Israeli forces continue to hunt down and destroy not only what’s left of the Iranian military, but also their logistical chain as well.
And, as I’ve been saying and writing all along, wars are won and lost by logistics.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A missile strike by Iran on Friday has left at least 10 U.S. service members injured and caused damage to multiple aircraft at a Saudi Arabian military base, as reported by two U.S. officials with knowledge of the incident.
According to one of the officials, two of the injured troops are in serious condition. The attack targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, where several U.S. refueling aircraft were damaged, said the officials, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information.
This assault, involving both a missile and drones from Iran, occurred just a day after President Donald Trump declared that Iran had been “obliterated.” Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth remarked that “never in recorded history has a nation’s military been so quickly and so effectively neutralized.”
Prince Sultan Air Base has previously been in the crosshairs. Army Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, aged 26, was injured in an attack on March 1 at the same base and succumbed to his injuries a few days later. He was among the 13 service members who have lost their lives in the conflict.
Satellite images showing the recent damage to the aircraft have surfaced online. This incident was initially reported by The Wall Street Journal.
U.S. Central Command said earlier Friday that more than 300 service members have been wounded in the monthlong conflict. While most of the wounded have recovered and returned to duty, 30 remained out of action and 10 were considered seriously wounded.
The Trump administration offered a 15-point plan for a possible ceasefire to Iran, with Pakistan as an intermediary.
Iran has denied that negotiations are taking place, while its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz has sent fuel prices skyrocketing and roiled the world economy. Tehran on Friday, however, said it agreed to facilitate humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments through the crucial waterway.
Despite the discussion of talks, the Pentagon is preparing to send at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division — a unit trained to parachute into hostile or contested territory to secure key territory and airfields — to the Middle East in the coming days.
The military is also in the process of deploying two Marine units that will add about 5,000 Marines and thousands of sailors to the region.
Despite thousands of additional troops heading to the region, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the United States “can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops.”
In terms of the additional deployments, “we are always going to be prepared to give the president maximum optionality and maximum opportunity to adjust to contingencies should they emerge,” Rubio told reporters after the Group of Seven foreign ministers meeting in France.
A tragic separation has marked the end of a relationship between an Israeli couple who were forcibly separated during the horrific events of October 7, as reported by a local news source.
Noa Argamani, 28, and Avinatan Or, 32, were taken by Hamas militants from the Nova Festival and held captive in Gaza for over two years, enduring their ordeal separately.
Argamani became a symbol of the tragedy when footage of her being abducted on a terrorist’s motorcycle spread worldwide, showing the fear and chaos of that day.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — This Saturday, the nation is poised for a historic series of protests tagged “No Kings,” aimed squarely at President Donald Trump and his administration. These rallies are set to be among the largest in U.S. history, with Minnesota serving as a pivotal point for the movement.
Across all 50 states, organizers have planned more than 3,100 events, with an anticipated participation of over 9 million individuals. This widespread mobilization underscores a significant national sentiment against recent political actions.
In particular, St. Paul, Minnesota, has been chosen as the flagship location for these demonstrations. The decision highlights Minnesota’s role as a flashpoint for resistance, especially following the fatal shooting of two individuals by federal agents during Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts.
The rally in St. Paul will feature Bruce Springsteen, who will perform “Streets of Minneapolis.” This song was inspired by the tragic deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and serves as a tribute to the thousands of Minnesotans who have actively protested throughout the winter. Springsteen’s American Tour, themed “No Kings,” will kick off in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
Minnesota’s organizers have coordinated with state officials, predicting that upwards of 100,000 people might gather at the Capitol grounds. This would surpass last June’s turnout, which was estimated at 80,000 attendees.
The St. Paul rally will also feature singer Joan Baez, actor Jane Fonda,Sen. Bernie Sanders and a long list of other activists, labor leaders and elected officials.
The White House dismissed the nationwide protests as the product of “leftist funding networks” with little real public support.
“The only people who care about these Trump Derangement Therapy Sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement.
Rallies are also planned in more than a dozen other countries, from Europe to Latin America to Australia, Ezra Levin, a co-executive director of Indivisible, a group spearheading the events, said in an interview. Countries with constitutional monarchies call the protests “No Tyrants,” he said.
For those unable to attend in person, another activist group, Stand Up For Science, is hosting a “virtual and accessible” event online.
National organizers told reporters in an online news conference Thursday that they expect Saturday’s protests to be larger than the first two rounds of No Kings rallies, which they estimate drew more than 5 million people in June and more than 7 million in October.
“This administration’s actions are angering not just Democratic voters or folks in big blue city centers – they are crossing a line for people in red and rural areas, in the suburbs, all over the country,” said Leah Greenberg, the other co-executive director of Indivisible. “The defining story of this Saturday’s mobilization is not just how many people are protesting, but where they are protesting,”
Two-thirds of the RSVPs have come from outside of major urban centers, Greenberg said, listing registration surges in conservative-leaning states like Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, South Dakota and Louisiana, as well in competitive suburban areas of Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona.
“Millions of us are rising up from all walks of life, from rural communities to big cities at No Kings,” said Katie Bethell, executive director of MoveOn, another major organizer. “And as we do so, we will send the loudest, clearest message yet that this country does not belong to kings, dictators, tyrants. An Indiana mother and her boyfriend are facing charges of neglect leading to death after her 4-year-old son, who had severe medical conditions and was unable to walk, talk, or feed himself, was found unresponsive and later died at Riley Children’s Health in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Police responded to a call just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, made by Angel Lovely’s boyfriend, Nicholas Bergdoll, according to a report by the Indianapolis Star.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the young boy, Malichi Lovely, who used a wheelchair, was placed in a closet under the basement stairs the night before his tragic death. Angel Lovely reportedly told authorities that she was awake around 9 a.m. that morning as she sent her other children off to school. One child mentioned to detectives that he heard Malichi gagging before leaving for school, but Lovely claimed she was not informed of this incident.
Following the departure of her children, Lovely fell asleep around 10 a.m., only waking when one of her daughters returned from school in the afternoon. Upon waking, she instructed her daughter to check on Malichi—a task the daughter often did to comfort him, as he frequently became upset when he felt alone.
When the girl went to the basement, she opened the closet door and turned on the light, immediately noticing blood coming from Malichi’s mouth and his eyes rolled back.
Bergdoll told police he was in the basement while Malichi was in the closet — also sleeping — and hadn’t heard any choking or gagging. He said he didn’t know how long the child had been in the closet.
Lovely told police that she only ever put in there for a few minutes when he would scream and then take him back out again. She did not explain why he’d been there all day while she slept.
Malichi’s three older siblings told investigators that he was frequently put in the basement closet. “He’s trapped in the little room,” one child said. “Mom does not take care of [him] as much.”
The court documents also quoted the children saying “mom keeps him in the closet and does not pay attention to him.”
Lovely, 37, and Bergdoll, 36, denied neglecting the boy and had excuses ready for investigators. For his part, Bergdoll threw his girlfriend under the bus, saying they’d only been together a few months and he was “not going to tell her how to f****** raise her kids.”
Lovely said Malichi frequently had insomnia and would stay awake for days, making him an “overall cranky child.” She blamed the a hospital when he was listed as “failure to thrive” in 2024. She was also accused at that time of missing her son’s medical appointments, which she also blamed on the hospital for canceling the appointments and then not returning her calls when she tried to reschedule.
That was when the boy was temporarily removed from her custody and placed into foster care. A year later she was granted full custody again, against the advisement of DCS.
Malichi has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, congenital hypertonia, hip dysplasia, spastic quadriplegia, epilepsy, aphagia, hearing loss, skin disorders, gastroenteritis, colitis, insomnia, GERD, hydrocephalus, and sleep apnea.
Lovely and Bergdoll both denied keeping Malichi in the closet “all the time.”
