In a twist of fate, a Thanksgiving getaway to Peru turned into an ordeal that James Fernandez, an eighth-grade science teacher from Palm Harbor Middle School, will never forget. While exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Cusco province, a lightning strike brought him perilously close to losing his life.
Fernandez, who hails from Pinellas County, Florida, had embarked on this trip with his wife, their nine-month-old son, and family friends. It was meant to be a time of relaxation and adventure. However, a planned afternoon outing for the men took an unexpected and dangerous turn.
“We thought a little boys’ excursion would be fun. The husbands decided to go mountain biking,” recounted Fernandez, reflecting on the events that unfolded. “That’s when things took a dramatic turn.”
During their biking adventure, an arc from a lightning strike unexpectedly hit Fernandez, marking the beginning of a harrowing journey. Following this life-threatening incident, Fernandez spent nearly four months receiving medical care, both in Peru and back home in the United States.
The men went mountain biking in the Cusco province of Peru when the arc from a lightning strike hit Fernandez.
“I don’t remember the lightning strike itself. I just remember waking up in the grass. I remember feeling like I couldn’t breathe. I remember, not being able to move my arms or legs, telling the guide that we were with to not move me, not touch me, and go call for help,” Fernandez said.
The bolt directly hit Yuri Botehlo, Fernandez’s friend. He died shortly after.
Back in the City of Cusco, Fernandez’s wife, Alexis, told 8 On Your Side that concern grew as hours passed without contact, and Botehlo’s wife became concerned.
“I was like, it’s probably no service, and she’s like, I don’t have a good feeling about this. And so, by the time it got dark out, she was like, ‘We need to figure this out, we haven’t heard from them,’” Alexis Fernandez said.
With the help of a local guide, they tried to reach the biking company but couldn’t get through.
Fernandez’s wife then got a call from a regional hospital asking her if she was, in fact, his wife, and once she confirmed, they asked her to come to the hospital immediately.
According to Fernandez’s wife, the hospital staff did not mention Botehlo’s husband.
When Fernandez’s husband arrived, he was there, but Botehlo was not.
Though Fernandez survived, the strike left him with a spinal cord injury, paralyzing him from the waist down.
“This has changed not only my life, but my friends, my family, my kids, everybody around me,” Fernandez said.
For his wife, the reality of what lies ahead has begun to settle in.
“I realized what this injury can be and like how many of those adventures have now are no longer on the table, like surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing, and mountain biking,” Alexis Fernandez said.
Still, she says her view of her husband hasn’t changed.
“I didn’t take these vows to be James’s wife because of all the sports that we do and all the activities we do, right? Alexis Fernandez said. “He’s still just as resilient and caring and kind.”
At their Clearwater home, stacks of cards from students, colleagues, and community members fill the dining room table, marking a visible reminder of the support surrounding the family.
“I’m just really grateful for my wife, for my family, my friends, for my community. It’s really helped me keep a positive spirit,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez says he hopes to return to the classroom, but it likely won’t happen this school year.
In Greene County, Tennessee, a caregiver employed by Support Solutions in Greeneville faces serious charges following accusations of abuse and neglect toward a vulnerable adult. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) disclosed that the incident had led to the caregiver’s arrest.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man has been taken into custody for allegedly scheming to firebomb the residence of a well-known Palestinian activist, following an extensive undercover operation orchestrated by the New York City Police Department, officials announced on Friday.
The intended victim, Nerdeen Kiswani, is an activist who spearheads protests in New York City against Israel and the conflict in Gaza, representing the group Within Our Lifetime.
Kiswani, 31, revealed that she was notified by law enforcement on Thursday evening about the disruption of “a threat on my life that was about to take place.”
Authorities stated that Alexander Heifler was apprehended on Thursday at his Hoboken, New Jersey residence while he was in the process of crafting Molotov cocktails with the intention of attacking Kiswani’s home. For several weeks, he had been discussing his plans with an undercover NYPD officer who had successfully joined a group chat Heifler was part of, according to a police department representative.
An official familiar with the investigation mentioned that Heifler, 26, is associated with the JDL 613 Brotherhood, a New Jersey-based organization established in 2024, which portrays its members as “Jewish warriors” combating the surge in antisemitism.
A website for the group says they are inspired by the original Jewish Defense League, a group linked to numerous bombings and attempted assassinations of Arab American political activists in the 1970s and 1980s.
Heifler planned to flee to Israel following the attack, according to the official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the details of an ongoing investigation.
An email inquiry sent to the JDL 613 was not returned.
Kiswani, who lives in Brooklyn with her infant son and husband, said the plot would not deter her continued activism.
“I feel very blessed that they were able to thwart this, but it’s something that is a constant possibility for people who speak up on behalf of Palestine,” she said.
Heifler was charged in a criminal complaint with separate counts of making and possessing destructive devices, which each carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A message left with his attorney was not returned. He made an initial appearance in New Jersey federal court on Friday afternoon.
“Let me be clear: We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement. “No one should face violence for their political beliefs or their advocacy. I am relieved that Nerdeen is safe.”
According to a court filing written by an FBI agent, Heifler spoke on a video call in February with a group that included an undercover detective about his interest in training for “self-defense” and wanting space where he could throw Molotov cocktails.
The next day, he met with the undercover detective in person and discussed his plan to use them against Kiswani and flee the country, according to the complaint. “We have (Kiswani’s) address,” Heifler allegedly told the undercover. “So it’s like that, that would be easier if you’d be more comfortable with that.”
Heifler and the undercover detective drove to Kiswani’s residence on March 4 to “conduct surveillance” and discussed making a dozen Molotov cocktails to throw at her home and two cars parked outside, the complaint said.
On Thursday, the undercover detective met Heifler at his Hoboken residence, where Heifler had assembled components to make the Molotov cocktails, including a large bottle of Everclear, a highly flammable alcohol, the complaint said. Law enforcement officers then executed a search warrant at the residence and recovered the eight Molotov cocktails, the complaint said.
Kiswani co-founded the group Within Our Lifetime, which frequently organizes protests against Israel that draw hundreds of participants and often end in arrests. The group’s calls to “abolish Zionism” and support for “all forms of struggle,” including violence, has drawn fierce criticism. Kiswani denies that her criticism of Israel amounts to antisemitism.
Kiswani has been a frequent target of online vitriol. Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Randy Fine, a Florida Republican, sparked backlash after writing in a social media post that “the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.” The post was a response to a message Kiswani shared about dog owners, which she said was a light joke.
“That hate against Palestinians has been bolstered by public officials, by Zionist organizations, who are never held accountable,” she said. “This is the inevitable result of that.”
The operation was carried out by the Racially and Ethnically Motivated Extremism unit within the NYPD’s counterterrorism bureau, a police spokesperson said.
“This is exactly how our intelligence and counterterrorism operation is designed to work — a sophisticated apparatus built to detect danger early and prevent violence before it reaches our streets,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

As their wedding day approaches, an ominous cloud of bad luck and eerie portents looms over them. Rachel’s worst fears come true when she discovers her family is cursed. The Harkin lineage is doomed: if they marry someone who is not their destined soulmate, they will suffer a gruesome and untimely death on their wedding day. This curse claimed her mother’s life the day Rachel was born, and now it threatens her own future.

It’s finally happening. The finale of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen opens with Rachel walking down the aisle to greet Nicky as his proud family, and the skeptical Witness, watch on. Everyone appears to be in good spirits, even Rachel, Jules and Nell, who all know about the curse. Considering Episode 7 ended with Rachel completing the ritual of finding something living, something dead, something stolen, something red as her ancestor advised so she could turn into Nicky’s soulmate, Nell and Jules likely believe they finally figured out a way around the curse. But did Rachel actually drink the potion?
While exchanging vows, Rachel promises to devote herself to him and trust in their love for each other, no matter the risks. “There is no certainty in marriage, in love, in anything. The only certainty in life is death,” she tells him. “So fuck certainty.” Cut to Rachel deliberating over the potion with her trusty penny in hand, only to decide against taking the potion (even after she cut her own pinky toe off for it!)
Morrone told DECIDER this was Rachel’s “way of sacrificing and saying, I love you, and I know I love you and I’m going to go for this.”
“I think she wants to put her faith in Nicky and in their love, and give them the benefit of the doubt and give this love the benefit of the doubt and like, really commit to him,” she said. (But, as DiMarco put it, “She’s also probably thinking, like, ‘Damn, I wish I kept my pinky toe on.’”)
Rachel and Nicky share an emotional moment together at the altar as Rachel takes this “leap of faith” and proclaims that she believes Nicky to be her true soulmate. Nicky promises the same to her, but he blindsides her when it comes time to exchange rings. “Everything I thought I knew about love and marriage has changed,” he confesses, likely referring to the truth about his parents’ marriage. “Marriage destroys people.” Rachel is beyond shocked, to say the least. Nicky insists that he’s trying to do the right thing for Rachel by “freeing” them from the “institution of marriage,” but Rachel isn’t hearing any of it considering, well, her life is quite literally on the line.
After they run away from the altar, Rachel and Nicky find themselves at an impasse. Rachel is deeply betrayed as she insists they have to get married because of the curse, while Nicky refuses to believe this is reason enough, considering she never wanted to get married in the first place. In their argument, Rachel and Nicky unpack years worth of issues they’ve harbored, including Nicky accusing her of being paranoid and narcissistic.

But, on the other side of the house, the party must go on. Portia is ensuring everyone at the wedding is well imbibed to distract them from the drama. Meanwhile, Victoria and Boris are having some trouble of their own as Victoria accuses him of ruining her relationship with Nicky by revealing he may not be his biological father. Somewhere in the room, Nell and Jules, who are facing their own divorce, are also bickering over what to do about the newlyweds. It goes to show that no marriage is perfect.
Meanwhile, the figure we now know to be Death is stalking through the halls of the house and the wedding reception, unbeknownst to all of the guests there. But the party is certainly going on; there’s laughter and merriment and tons of drinking as Rachel and Nicky continue their back and forth in the bedroom where it’s revealed that Nicky doesn’t actually believe in the curse.
Rachel becomes hysterical as it dawns on her that she staked her entire life on a man who ultimately doesn’t believe her when it matters most. “You chose a version of me a long time ago and that’s all I am,” she tells him during their screaming match. “Then you get frustrated when I’m not that. You have made it impossible, impossible for me to exist!”
As a looming clock ticks towards sundown, The Witness is creeping out the guests by asking if they believe they’ve married their soulmates.
Nell and Jules attempt to convince Nicky to marry her to no avail. In a pathetic moment that is quite telling of his character, only Nicky’s mother can convince him to calm down and marry Rachel in the end. This is enough to convince Rachel he was never her soulmate; he apologizes to Rachel but she ultimately turns him down and tries to get away, despite all of the Cunninghams chasing after her.

But they’re already out of time. It’s 4:45, the sun is beginning to set and they still haven’t gotten married, which means the curse has already spread to Nicky’s family. The invisible force of Death goes for its first victim: Victoria. As she begins to bleed profusely from her nose, the same happens to one of the wedding guests, then another who is dancing with Jude, until the curse spreads to every member of the Cunningham family at the wedding (and likely beyond) who married someone who is not their soulmate, sparking total mayhem.
The Witness insists he “warned” Rachel by telling her the curse would spread to Nicky’s bloodline, but she could never have imagined it would have this kind of impact. Dozens of Nicky’s loved ones are hemorrhaging and dying a painful, bloody death, as their loved ones watch on. It’s impossible to overstate how much blood there is everywhere as the reception breaks into absolute pandemonium. Meanwhile, Jules finds Jude hiding from the chaos under the table, much like he once hid from the Sorry Man when he was kid.
After locking Jude in a bedroom to keep him safe, Jules returns to his parents’ room where Victoria is dying while surrounded by her family. He confirms the curse has spread to their bloodline, prompting Portia to reveal she may also be at risk of dying since she secretly married someone in Vegas. Jules attempts to stop the curse from spreading further by making Nicky marry Rachel, which The Witness signs off on.
Rachel begs Nicky not to do it, but The Witness signs off on the marriage, sealing her fate forever.
She quickly begins to bleed out, just like her mother did. She walks away from the Cunninghams as she bleeds profusely onto Victoria’s wedding dress on her way to the atrium, where she hemorrhages to death and dies by herself. Meanwhile, the Cunninghams all still have each other. Portia bleeds out as her father and her siblings hold her dying body.
In the end, Death finally comes for The Witness, who has been alive for countless generations now. “Finally, you come for me,” he says with a smile.

At least one couple gets a happy ending. In the bedroom, Nell and Jules reunite with Jude. Nell, who recently filed for divorce, questions why Jules hasn’t suffered the same fate as his family. He just looks at her sadly, implying that this confirms they are actually soulmates.
Back at the reception, The Witness finally drops dead after what looks like a decadent last meal. And as soon as he does, Rachel wakes up in the atrium, indicating that she is the new Witness. She looks like a ghost in her bloody wedding dress as she returns to the bedroom she shares with Nicky where he’s literally clutching a teddy bear.
But she later crosses paths with Jude and apologizes to him, while empowering him to believe in himself and his intuition. “You have to be really, really, really, really careful who you choose to marry,” she advises him. “And don’t worry. I’m going to be there to witness.” She gives him a final hug and promises to see him again later.
She goes back to her wedding reception where she sees the bloody aftermath and the Witness’ final message to her. “Your turn!” he wrote on the table in blood.
Rachel puts on his clothes and gets in his car, assuming this new identity of hers. The radio only plays one monotonous song over and over again, and there’s no changing it. But after a bit of smoking, Rachel finally cracks a smile. In a way, she’s finally free.
The Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen ending is bittersweet. Rachel is technically free of the curse and is now immortal after having been so willing to throw herself away to become Nicky’s soulmate. She will have to witness every wedding in Nicky’s bloodline through the generations until someone else is unlucky enough to take over the mantle and become the Witness.
Tropical Cyclone Narelle has re-intensified off the the northern coast of Western Australia.
It will sweep south along the coastline over the next few days, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain.
An isolated town has been left in disarray as an evacuation center stands deserted and roofs are torn off buildings due to a fierce cyclone ravaging the coastal communities. Cyclone Narelle has unleashed its fury along Western Australia’s northwest coast, leading to severe flooding as torrential rain inundates homes and reports emerge of boats being sunk. The storm’s powerful gusts have been strong enough to shake structures, leaving many in distress.
Exmouth, a popular holiday destination located 1,250 kilometers north of Perth, bore the brunt of Narelle’s wrath overnight. The category four cyclone brought with it winds exceeding 250 kilometers per hour, striking fear and chaos into the heart of the community.
“The really destructive core passed just west of Exmouth, and it has been severely impacted,” stated Darren Klemm, Commissioner of the Department and Fire and Emergency Services, on Friday. “We’re anticipating some pretty significant damage from this event.”

Police and members of the defence force are moving about 50 people to a local church after the roof of the town’s evacuation centre was damaged.
“No reports of injuries at this time,” Klemm said.
Power has been lost in the town of about 2800 people, with emergency crews holed up due to the dangerous conditions.
“The eye of the cyclone has passed Exmouth but the town is still being impacted and it’s likely to stay at emergency warning until the middle of this afternoon,” Klemm said.
Narelle was heading south near Coral Bay as a category three storm on Friday afternoon and was expected to make landfall and pass to the east of Carnarvon in the afternoon.
The storm is likely to weaken to a category two system once it’s over land, but residents in Kalbarri and Geraldton have been warned they could still be impacted by damaging winds into the early hours of Saturday.
“The worst of the winds will be in areas near and to the east of the cyclone’s track,” meteorologist James Ashley said.
Exmouth Shire president Matthew Niikkula said roofs had lifted off houses and many others were flooded.
“Not a person in town would have got any sleep last night … screaming winds, lots of bangs, everyone’s house shaking, sitting in the dark with their candles or their torch,” he said.
“It’s a really, really terrifying experience.”
Exmouth local and digital creator Craig Kitson said trees and fences had been toppled near his home, and there were reports of boats sunk in the marina and a significant storm surge impacting the town.
“People have lost their houses from what I’ve heard, and there’s people that have definitely lost their roofs … anyway you look at it, it’s a significant impact,” he said.
Tourism operator Murray Pattison’s family evacuated from the town on the last flight to Perth.
He has been holed up in a concrete home with friends and said it was a wild night as the cyclone passed the town.

“It’s been howling and roaring,” he said.
“We’re very fortunate. I’ve just got a bit of water coming in, but there are people who have had roofs come off, houses completely flooded.
“Hopefully, we can just get to the other side of this and band together as a town and help those who need it.”
Narelle reformed from a tropical low after leaving a trail of destruction across parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory.
It’s the first time a cyclone has hit the three jurisdictions since Ingrid made three crossings in 2005.
The system is set to weaken as it moves southeast on Saturday and passes east of Perth before moving out over the Southern Ocean.
Heavy rain is forecast for Perth, but severe winds are unlikely.
A man from Washington, with a history of four felony convictions, has found himself back in custody after allegedly shooting a teenager in the chest due to a neighborhood prank.
The incident occurred when a group of four teenagers drove through Tacoma on February 28, throwing water balloons from their car, according to a report by FOX 13.
One of the water balloons reportedly hit the vehicle belonging to 31-year-old Majeed Guerry, with water splashing inside through an open window, resulting in him getting wet.
In retaliation, Guerry allegedly pursued the teenagers down a dead-end road located near a dump site.

Once the group was cornered, Guerry is accused of unleashing a litany of violence against them in retaliation for throwing the water balloon.
According to court documents obtained by FOX 13, Guerry allegedly pistol-whipped the teenager responsible for throwing the balloon.
He then allegedly shot the same victim in the chest, the outlet reported.

Immediately following the shooting, Guerry allegedly robbed the group of $100 in cash and fled the scene.
Authorities were called to the area shortly after 9 p.m., where they found the four teenage boys inside the vehicle, noting one member of the group was suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

After leaving the alleged shooting, police said Guerry drove to a local casino, according to FOX 13.
Investigators used a network of surveillance cameras to track Guerry’s movements leading up to and immediately after the alleged shooting to link him to the crime scene, the outlet reported.
He was taken into custody on March 20, according to the Tacoma Police Department.
In court Monday, Guerry pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, assault, unlawful imprisonment and unlawful possession of a firearm charges. His bail was set at $150,000.
Since Guerry is a felon with a criminal history of assaults and protection order violations, he is legally prohibited from owning a gun, according to FOX 13.
Before leaving the courtroom, Guerry reportedly addressed his supporters in the gallery, telling them, “Come get me,” as he was led out, the outlet reported.
Fox News Digital was unable to immediately locate an attorney representing Guerry. The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.

On a cold winter day, a wealthy man on his way to a business meeting noticed a barefooted boy of about 10 years of age shining shoes at the corner. Fingers reddened with cold, the boy smiled at every customer. As the boy polished his shoes, the man asked, “Why aren’t you in school?” The boy shrugged. “Gotta help Mama. She’s sick.” The man nodded, paid triple, and left. Two weeks later, the boy arrived home to find a doctor treating his mother and a grocery basket at the door. A note from this wealthy man read: “Consider this a loan until your mother smiles again. Pay it forward someday.” Years later, that boy became a medical doctor himself. On his clinic wall hung a framed note: a reminder of quiet help that expected nothing in return.
Just as the wealthy man did for the poor little shoe shiner, Boaz brought a smile to Ruth’s face. In Jewish culture, gleaning was a practice where leftover crops were collected by the poor and less privileged after harvest. Ruth, a Moabitess widow, who had just returned to Bethlehem with her mother-in-law, Naomi, was allowed by Boaz, a gentle and kind-hearted wealthy Bethlehemite, to glean closely to the reapers. He also gave her access to refreshment and instructed the reapers to “let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her.” Ruth’s gleaning amounted to about seven and a half gallons of grain, which she gladly shared with her mother-in-law.

Heather Dubrow encountered criticism regarding her physique after posting a picture of herself in a short, shimmering gold dress on Instagram this Wednesday.
As filming is underway for the landmark 20th season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, which marks the eagerly awaited return of Vicki Gunvalson, Heather, now 57, shared a social media update showcasing her recent fashion choices. However, the post quickly attracted negative comments targeting her slender frame.
“Comment ‘MARCH’ and I’ll send you a link to my looks from March so far! Which one is your favorite?” Heather captioned a slideshow posted on March 25.
While a multitude of followers eagerly commented “MARCH” to receive links to her previous outfits, a number of others chose to remark on her appearance, urging the actress-turned-reality star to “eat!”
“OMG, those boney arms. Heather, what have you done to yourself? You look skeletal,” one person stated.
Another told her to “eat something” as someone else mentioned “food.”
“Yikes,” another proclaimed.
As the comments continued, someone else told Heather, “OMG EAT SOMETHING!” Another IG user said, “OMG stop losing weight. You’re a beautiful woman.”
Heather also faced accusations of using GLP1s, as someone wrote, “Omg, another ozempic case.” Another person added, “These GLPs have everyone losing their minds thinking this looks good. It’s scary.”
Years ago, Heather faced similar comments after being featured in a stomach-baring photo with her fellow Real Housewives.

A 25-year-old man from Indiana has been sentenced to over 30 years in prison for the tragic death of his girlfriend’s 21-month-old daughter. The child suffered catastrophic injuries when he shook her so violently that her brain was damaged, leading to brain matter leaking from her ears, according to medical experts.
On Friday, Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge F. Aaron Negangard sentenced Jesse Allen Sartin to 35 years in a state prison, followed by an additional five years of probation. This sentence was issued in connection with the death of young Caroline Ruth Boggs, as revealed by authorities.
The sentencing followed Sartin’s guilty plea to a charge of aggravated battery resulting in death.
The incident occurred on July 24, 2024, when Sartin was responsible for looking after Caroline. According to a news release, prosecutors stated that Sartin violently shook the child for roughly 20 seconds, leading to severe and ultimately fatal brain damage.
Caroline was initially treated at St. Elizabeth Dearborn before being transferred via airlift to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. There, she underwent emergency surgery and was placed on life support. Despite intensive medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries on August 1. The cause of death was identified as abusive head trauma, consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
At sentencing, Negangard cited multiple aggravating factors, including the child’s “extreme vulnerability,” Sartin’s position of trust as her caregiver, and the “violent nature and duration of the assault.” The court also noted Sartin’s prior criminal history, that he was on probation at the time, and that he initially provided false information to investigators before admitting what he had done.
“This case represents a devastating and preventable loss of life,” Dearborn-Ohio Counties Prosecutor Lynn Deddens said in a statement. “Caroline was a healthy, loved child who depended on adults to protect her. Instead, she suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of someone entrusted with her care while her mother was at work.”
Victim impact statements described Caroline as a “joyful, curious child” whose death has left lasting trauma on her family.
Following his release, Sartin will be barred from having contact with minor children during his probation.
As Law&Crime previously reported, Sartin initially claimed the toddler’s injuries were accidental, telling medical staff she had been standing on an ottoman when a dog knocked her over, causing her to fall.
Doctors quickly determined the injuries were inconsistent with that account.
Due to the severity of her condition, the child was transferred to a children’s hospital, where surgeons attempted to relieve pressure from extreme brain swelling. Medical professionals later said the swelling was so severe that her brain herniated and was “leaking through her ears.”
Investigators ultimately determined the child had been in Sartin’s sole care at the time of the incident while her mother was at work.
In an interview with police, Sartin admitted he became frustrated while bathing the toddler, claiming she was “being aggressive and flailing her arms” because she did not want to get out of the tub. He then confessed to shaking her for about 20 seconds.
Authorities also recovered a letter Sartin allegedly wrote to his girlfriend after the incident, in which he described the moments leading up to the assault.
“Once the bubbles were gone, I drained the water and put her toys away. I tried to pull her out but she didn’t want to get out. Screaming and swinging her arms,” the letter states. “I tried to pull her out but she kept pulling away and I was getting upset. Baby, I’m so upset. I shook her trying to get her to calm down.”
An autopsy later determined the toddler’s death was a homicide caused by abusive head trauma, including swelling to the brain and significant hemorrhaging consistent with violent shaking.
The case drew scrutiny due to the severity of the child’s injuries and the initial attempt to portray them as accidental — a claim investigators said Sartin later abandoned when confronted with medical evidence.
People across NSW are being urged to stay out of the water this weekend with a one-in-50-year event bringing powerful winds, dangerous surf, and the risk of coastal erosion across the state’s coastline.
Last night, a coastal low-pressure system unleashed winds reaching up to 100 km/h and generated swells as high as 11 meters. The coastal hazard warning remains in effect, extending from Forster down past Eden.
The hazardous surf alert is expected to persist throughout the day, posing threats of dangerous surf conditions, low temperatures, and strong winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that wind gusts can be up to 40 percent stronger than predicted and could intensify further during squalls and thunderstorms.

While the conditions are expected to ease, close to 100 flights were cancelled to and from Sydney Airport last night.
