Despite escalating tensions in the Middle East, domestic aviation incidents, and the ongoing partial government shutdown led by Schumer, the world keeps turning and life carries on.
Amidst these headlines, there’s a heartwarming story emerging from China about seven dogs that were stolen. Initially seized by individuals involved in the meat trade, the dogs faced a grim future.
Remarkably, they managed to escape their captors.
The dogs undertook a courageous journey, covering over 10 miles on a perilous highway, ultimately reuniting with their owners. Their successful return was largely attributed to a determined corgi, who took charge and guided the group with unwavering leadership.
It’s an incredible tale of survival and loyalty.
Incredible:
Seven dogs stolen from their owners have gone viral after escaping from an illegal transport truck and making their way home.
They traveled around 17 km together, led by a corgi across highways and fields, now safely back with their respective owners..🐶🐾🥺❤️ pic.twitter.com/H5VB9BQkGB
The crew reportedly quickly turned into the doggone A-Team:
According to the South China Morning Post, the dogs were taken by thieves working for a dog meat shop and escaped from a moving truck. A Corgi led the group and repeatedly turned to check on the others, while the group surrounded an injured German shepherd in the middle. Other breeds, including Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and a Pekingese, followed closely behind.
More footage later showed the dogs crossing nearby fields, still sticking together and ignoring attempts from people to guide them to safety.
How did seven canines work together so seamlessly without the fur flying? Turns out they were all old pals:
Local rescuers later confirmed all seven dogs came from the same village, where they were known to roam together and had formed strong bonds. Volunteers tracked their movements as the group continued heading in the same direction, and by March 19, all seven dogs had finally reunited with their owners.
In China, stealing a dog is treated as a criminal offense, with penalties ranging from fines to prison time depending on the animal’s value.
The Corgi was the one leading them home The German Shepherd was injured The dogs kept a protective formation around the German Shepherd The Corgi stopped often to make sure they were still okay It took them 2 days to get home They are neighbourhood friends I’m going to cry😭😭😭 https://t.co/fJaDb4Qgfx
Unfortunately, in today’s new reality, one can’t help but think, “This is BS — it’s clearly an AI-generated story.” However, I asked AI itself, in the form of X’s Grok, and it said, nossir, this is the real deal.
The story is legitimate and not AI-generated. It originated from real events in Changchun (Jilin Province), China, around March 16, 2026, and has been widely reported and verified by multiple credible sources.
Many outlets across the globe are reporting that this is not AI and has, in fact, been confirmed. It’s a drag that we have to even worry about such things, but nobody wants to get fooled by the increasingly sophisticated output of AI Video creation engines.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was famously fond of corgis, and they were known to roam her palaces as pampered guests of honor. I’m imagining she’d be very proud of this group of furry friends, and especially Commander Corgi, who is reportedly named “Da Pang,” or “Big Fat.”
You deserve a special meal tonight, Big Fat. Bark on, lads and ladies.

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods is poised to make a much-anticipated return to the golfing arena as he gears up to compete in the finals of the TGL simulator golf league this Tuesday night. This comes months after undergoing his latest back surgery, marking another milestone in his storied career.
The news of Woods’ return was revealed following the first day of the finals, which saw a face-off between the LA Golf Club and Woods’ own Jupiter Links Golf Club. The TGL’s official account sparked excitement by posting an image of Woods in action, reminiscent of Michael Jordan’s famous return to basketball, with the bold declaration, “He’s back.” This announcement was further corroborated by ESPN’s Marty Smith.
On the opening day of the best-of-three championship series, Jupiter Links, led by Woods, narrowly lost 6-5. Reflecting on the outcome, Woods shared his thoughts with the media, expressing solidarity with his team: “I feel bad for them. As a team, we’re in this together, all of us.” He continued, “We’ve been close before, we were in a playoff once and this was nearly the same. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen this time, but we still have potentially two more matches. We’re not out of this yet, even with a loss.”
Woods’ team, Jupiter Links, fell 6-5 in the first day of the best-of-three championship series, with the 15-time major winner reflecting on the defeat afterwards.
‘I feel bad for ’em, as a team we’re together in this, all of us together,’ Woods told reporters, adding, ‘We’ve been there before, we were in a playoff once and this was damn near there. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, but we have possibly two more matches. We’re not out of this. Even with a loss, we’re still not out of it.’
The return fuels speculation that Woods may break his lengthy absence from PGA Tour events at The Masters this April.
Tiger Woods will make his return to competitive golf at the TGL Finals on Tuesday night
Woods has dealt with multiple operations that kept him from playing on course for all of 2025
His last appearance at a PGA Tour event was The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2024
Last year, Woods missed the chance to play at Augusta after he underwent an operation on his Achilles tendon during the TGL season.
Last October, Woods underwent surgery again – this time on his back. It was the seventh back operation he’s had in his career.
The injuries sparked fears over the future of the golfing great’s career, ramping up speculation once again over his chances of competing at The Masters.
However, eagle-eyed supporters of the 15-time major winner were quick to spot that Woods’ biography page on The Masters site had been updated last week – with one key detail.
From last Thursday, the opening line of Woods’ blurb read: ‘Tiger Woods is making his 27th Masters start in 2026.’
His name was also notably excluded from the list of ‘Past Champions Not Playing’ and was instead included in the 2026 playing field.
Woods has taken a manager’s role with Jupiter Links in TGL for most of the season
Woods’ lengthy absence has him on the verge of losing his spot in the Official World Golf Ranking – considering it’d be two years this July since he last competed.
He has not teed it up in a professional tournament since the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon and hasn’t played a full four rounds since that same year’s edition of The Masters.
While he has not played for Jupiter Links in TGL, Woods has taken on the role of ‘manager’ to his team of golfers: Tom Kim, Max Homa, Kevin Kisner, and Akshay Bhatia.
Woods previously remained coy on the possibility of playing in the final, despite insisting that he had tried to play in every match this season to no avail.
‘Well, I think that I have been trying to play each and every one of these matches,’ he said. ‘I’ve been trying to come back. But it just hasn’t worked out that way. … But the guys here, this team, we have so much fun, I really don’t want to screw up the lineup, I just want these guys to keep playing.’
All the while, he’s slowly built his strength back and worked on smaller parts of his game
He also slowly ramped up his return, going from chipping and putting to hitting mid-irons. Now, he seems to have made enough of a recovery to take out the big stick and swing hard.
Woods is no stranger to serious injuries in the back half of his career. In 2021, he suffered a serious car crash that resulted in open fractures to his right leg.
In April 2023, he had surgery on his right ankle after aggravating it during that year’s Masters. The following September, Woods underwent what would be his sixth back surgery which was done to ‘alleviate the back spasms and pain I was experiencing throughout most of the 2024 season.’
2025 was a complete wash after the Achilles injury before he had his aforementioned seventh back surgery to replace a disk in his lumbar.

Donald Trump’s hair has always been a topic of conversation, and his ever-changing hairstyle continues to draw attention. During an unexpected visit to Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, Trump’s hair seemed to channel the spirit of Elvis’s hit song “All Shook Up” a bit too literally.
Captured in a photograph while posing with a replica of one of Presley’s iconic guitars, Trump’s comb-over appeared noticeably disheveled. Although the angle of the photo spared viewers from his most prominent bald spots, it’s evident that the former president’s hair has visibly thinned over recent months.
This hair mishap comes just weeks after California Governor Gavin Newsom took a playful jab at Trump’s famously wispy locks during his 2026 State of the Union Address. Newsom humorously suggested on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Trump could benefit from some of his hair gel, a tweet that has garnered around 492,000 views, 18,000 likes, and 2,000 comments.

While many of Newsom’s supporters enjoyed the light-hearted dig at Trump, others were not as amused and criticized the governor for his social media activity. One user remarked, “Gavin Newsom needs to get off social media and help his constituents in California.”
While Newsom’s supporters unsurprisingly loved seeing the Democrat take jabs at the president, there were also plenty who complained about Newsom’s use of his time. “Gavin Newsom needs to get off social media and help his constituents in California,” wrote one user.
Donald Trump got a history lesson on Elvis Presley’s iconic hair

There are few celeb hairstyles more famous than Donald Trump’s shaggy ‘do, but Elvis Presley’s inky black mane, which inspired generations of copycats, definitely makes the cut. So it only makes sense that the billionaire got schooled about the singer’s coif during his Graceland trip. “This is a portrait of Elvis Presley that was done when he was in basic training in Portland, Texas, and it shows you Elvis’ natural hair color of blond,” explained a tour guide.
An astounded Trump replied, “Oh, really?” She continued, “He had blond hair, blue eyes. He dyed his hair black because he thought it brought his facial features better out on film.” It’s true; Kim Adelman, author of “The Girls’ Guide To Elvis,” told Yahoo! Beauty in 2015, “Elvis’ real hair was a sandy blond, but he wanted that black, black color. You can see pictures from the army when he couldn’t dye it, he got highlights.”
Meanwhile, Presley’s former hairstylist, Larry Geller, worked hard to maintain the integrity of the singer’s hair, which was very important to him. Geller reminisced about Presley with Yahoo! Beauty: “He said to me, right from the get-go, ‘You can do whatever you want with my hair, but one thing — make sure I keep it!’” Based on how thin his hair is getting, Trump is likely begging for the same thing.
Recently released footage has surfaced, capturing a harrowing incident where an Air Canada aircraft collided with a fire truck on a runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, tragically resulting in the deaths of both pilots.
The footage, shared by FDNY Response Videos, depicts the aircraft hurtling along Runway 4 before crashing into a Port Authority fire truck. The truck, with its emergency lights activated, was making a turn when the collision occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Sunday.

The impact caused the emergency vehicle to flip multiple times, while the plane appeared to struggle for control on the slick, rain-drenched runway.
According to an audio recording from air traffic control just before the accident, a controller initially granted permission for the fire truck to cross the tarmac. However, moments later, the controller urgently commanded the driver to halt the vehicle, indicating a sudden awareness of the impending disaster.

“Stop, truck one. Stop,” the transmission said. “Frontier 4195, stop there please. Stop, stop, stop, stop.”
The aircraft then strikes the fire truck, ripping the nose off the plane.
At the time of the collision, the jet was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, according to officials.

Both pilots aboard the CRJ-900 aircraft were killed in the collision, though their identities have not yet been made public.
Dozens of passengers aboard the plane were also hurt in the crash, and at least two Port Authority firefighters in the truck also suffered “serious injuries,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
A Port Authority spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle was responding to a separate incident as the aircraft was landing on Runway 4 at LaGuardia.
Jack Cabot, a passenger aboard the flight, described many of the passengers as bleeding from their heads.
“I remember looking behind me after we got off and there was some guy with just blood coming off his face,” he said. “A lot of people got pretty hurt.”
By 2 p.m. Monday, officials announced LaGuardia airport had reopened, adding travelers should expect delays or flight cancellations from their airlines as officials work to resume normal operations.
“LaGuardia Airport is now open, expect delays and/or cancellations,” airport officials posted on X. “Plan ahead and check with your airline for the latest updates.”

A viral video circulating on social media is igniting a fresh discussion about the interplay between finances, familial obligations, and the timing of marriage in Nigeria.
Shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), the video features a man who raises questions about the financial capabilities of families, suggesting a direct link to decisions about marriage.
Viral statement raises questions on marriage readiness
In the clip, he poses the provocative question, “Can three people in your family come up with one million naira within an hour? If not, you have no business getting married. Focus on improving your family’s financial situation first.“
This statement has quickly captured public attention, prompting a lively debate among Nigerians about whether financial readiness should influence marriage plans.
Watch the video here….
If 3 people cannot raise 1m within 1 hour in your family, don’t get married, go and look for how to liberate your family.”
Reacting to the video, Akikanju wrote: “It’s not about not getting married because of money, it’s about how you get married. You and your partners must have a conversation on how to proceed in a way that doesn’t wreck you and your family financially.
Many spend millions on their wedding, enough money to buy or build a house. Get a marriage license, do a small get together and plan a big reception later in the future. Don’t let peer pressure wreck your finances.”
Another user, Dika, highlighted the economic realities facing many Nigerians. According to the comment: “Well, I got his perspective. This should be a matter of emergency in this country. People are barely feeding, hand to mouth, salary finishes ones it drops. No proper savings. Nothing nothing. God help us all.”
However, not everyone agreed with the viral opinion. Seun of Lagos criticised the growing trend of online advice, writing: “Anybody can wake up now come to the internet and become a motivational speaker. Burst my head.”
Australian women unable to afford sanitary items are resorting to stealing or using household items like bread instead of pads as the cost-of-living crisis deepens.
One woman in regional Victoria said she had been using bread to manage her period before coming to charity Share the Dignity for help, while some have used wadded up toilet paper, Chux wipes or old towels.
Many women are being forced to choose between period products and other essentials. (Supplied)
There are individuals who find themselves resorting to shoplifting just to access the essential dignity that comes with having pads or tampons. This issue is not rare; it affects a significant number of those who menstruate.
In Australia, this struggle is particularly pronounced. According to the Bloody Big Survey conducted by the charity Share the Dignity, around 64 percent of Australians who require period products have faced difficulties affording them.
Rochelle Courtenay, the founder and managing director of Share the Dignity, highlighted the severity of the situation by saying, “When someone is already struggling to fill their car with fuel at $1.95, imagine what a $2.95 expense for period products would mean to them.”
Courtenay also pointed out the harsh reality that many women often prioritize themselves last, making the cost of these necessary items an even more significant burden.
“Especially to women who already put themselves last.”
Courtenay has urged her own staff to work from home as petrol prices near $3 per litre.
The existing cost of living issues compounded by the war in the Middle East has meant the number of people needing charity from Share the Dignity has ballooned to unexpected numbers.
Traditionally, Share the Dignity offers period care products to women experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence.
But Courtenay said the period poverty crisis has spilled out across the country.
She warned even those with incomes above $100,000 were facing the problem.

“This is going to affect so many more people, I’m scared for what’s coming,” Courtenay said.
“And nobody wants to admit that they’ve got their period and that they cannot afford basic essentials.
“There’s so much shame in that.”
The charity’s survey also found that one in four women wear period products for longer than recommended due to spiralling costs.
Courtenay said this is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of period poverty.
“That is only going to harm you from a toxic shock perspective, but also but also the anxiety that comes with that,” Courtenay said.
“And I’m scared hearing about women having to even think about using bread in their underwear.
“This is really then too much for Share the Dignity.
“We can’t get period products in the hands of everybody that needs them.”

Share the Dignity is calling on the federal government, state governments and councils to take action on period poverty.
The charity also urging businesses to provide free products for staff.
The aim is to treat menstrual products with the same urgency and importance as toilet paper.
The charity’s March dignity drive, which takes places at Woolworths stores, is coming to an end, but only 26 per cent of the target has been met.
Share the Dignity hosts another drive in August but this month’s drive will likely not bring in enough period products to last until then.
“We’re giving a woman a warm jacket or a pair of shoes and that lasts a few years. This is a monthly problem,” Courtenay said.
“And it’s not going away because the price of fuel’s gone up.
“Right now, we just need everybody in Australia who can afford it, to donate.”

Osteoporosis, a condition that compromises bone strength and increases the likelihood of fractures, affects over 54 million individuals in the United States. Alarming statistics reveal that after the age of 50, one in two women and one in four men are expected to endure a bone break due to this disease. Fortunately, incorporating simple daily habits and specific exercises into your routine can significantly enhance bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures, making prevention both accessible and effective.
What Is Osteoporosis?
This condition arises from an imbalance in which bone resorption surpasses bone formation, resulting in weakened and fragile bones. According to Dr. Meryl LeBoff, the head of the Calcium and Bone Section at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, osteoporosis often remains undetected until it manifests through a fracture. This underscores the importance of early intervention and awareness.
Globally, osteoporosis affects over 200 million people, with certain demographics, such as postmenopausal women, experiencing a prevalence rate of approximately 10%. Age exacerbates the risk, while lifestyle factors like smoking can double it, and conditions such as diabetes can triple it. History of fractures further amplifies the risk sixfold. This silent menace, as experts describe it, necessitates proactive measures to safeguard bone health.
Prevent Osteoporosis With Lifestyle Habits
Surprisingly, our daily activities wield significant influence over bone health. Adopting beneficial habits, such as maintaining a balanced diet and ensuring adequate sleep, can directly bolster bone density. Regular intake of calcium and vitamin D has been shown to lower fracture risk by as much as 24%.
Cue Up a Comedy for Bone Health
Interestingly, laughter, often associated with joy and stress relief, also plays a role in bone health. It prompts the release of endorphins, which alleviate stress and may enhance blood circulation, thereby aiding the delivery of essential nutrients to the bones. Research suggests that the positive mood induced by humor can indirectly improve musculoskeletal function. For a simple habit to incorporate, try watching a brief comedy clip before bedtime; it promotes relaxation without the disruptive effects of blue light emitted by screens.
Elevator Trick for Deeper Sleep
Picture an elevator descending floor by floor to drift back to sleep if you wake at night: start at floor 10, feel your body sink heavier with each number down. Quality sleep slashes osteoporosis risk; good sleepers face 46% lower odds than poor ones, as it regulates hormones for bone repair. Aim for 7-9 hours consistently.
Calcium and Vitamin D Focus
These nutrients are bone builders: target 1,200 mg calcium and 800 IU vitamin D daily from yogurt, leafy greens, salmon, or fortified foods. Supplements help if diet falls short, reducing all fractures by 12-24% in compliant users. Pair them to maximize absorption and strength.
Top 4 Osteoporosis Exercises for Stronger Bones
Movement stresses bones positively, sparking growth. Weight-bearing and resistance types increase density, especially in hips and spine, while balance cuts fall risk.
How to Stop Osteoporosis With Quick Hacks and Top Bone Exercises
Weight-Bearing Activities
Walking briskly or climbing stairs forces bones to bear load, mimicking daily impacts that build density. Do 30 minutes most days; studies show it raises bone mass and stability.
Chair Exercises
Sit-to-stand: from a firm chair edge, rise using legs only, then lower slowly, 10-15 reps. Ideal for beginners or limited mobility, it strengthens without strain and suits osteoporosis safety by avoiding spine flexion.
Resistance Training
Use light weights or bands for squats or rows, targeting major muscles 2-3 times weekly. This counters age-related loss, with adherence around 36-54% yielding measurable gains.
Yoga Poses
Tree Pose or Chair Pose builds balance and density safely from a chair if needed. Practice 10-20 minutes; research confirms spine and hip improvements.
Final Thought
Start one hack and exercise today; bones respond quickly to consistency, turning risk into resilience. Consult your doctor for personalized screening to stay ahead.
A tragic incident unfolded when a Loyola University student was fatally shot by a masked assailant during a late-night walk with friends, authorities reported.
On March 20, authorities apprehended Jose Medina in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, which took place in a Chicago park. According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Medina allegedly approached Gorman, discharged a firearm, and attempted to escape. Sadly, Gorman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 25-year-old suspect, identified by authorities as a Venezuelan national, faces several charges as detailed in a statement sent to Oxygen by the Chicago Police Department. The charges include one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for possessing a firearm without a valid FOID card, and three counts of aggravated assault/discharge of a firearm.
Gorman, a freshman at Loyola University, had been walking with friends near her dormitory on March 19, according to her family in a statement released by ABC 7 and The Chicago Tribune. The family emphasized that Gorman was not engaging in any reckless behavior at the time of the incident.
“There was nothing reckless about her actions,” the family’s statement stressed. “There was nothing unusual about where she was. She left her dorm to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. She was exactly where she should have been—close to campus, surrounded by friends, living her life.”
Gorman’s family said the teen will be honored in her hometown of Yorktown.
“Sheridan deserved a full life,” the statement continued. “She deserved the future that was taken from her. We will not allow her to be remembered as just another story. She was extraordinary, and she will always be loved.”
Following her death, Loyola University President Mark C. Reed addressed the student body.
“It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today in an incident north of the Lake Shore Campus,” wrote Reed. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her.
Medina’s first court hearing is scheduled for March 23. Oxygen could not immediately reach an attorney for Medina.
A massive explosion rocked the Valero refinery in Port Arthur on Monday, sending a towering plume of black smoke over the city and prompting a swift emergency response throughout Jefferson County. Investigators are currently working to determine what triggered the blast.
The explosion occurred just after midday within the extensive Gulf Coast facility, causing tremors in nearby neighborhoods. In response, officials urged residents to stay indoors while fire crews and industrial hazmat teams rushed to manage the situation. The resulting thick smoke column was visible for miles across Southeast Texas, drawing increased attention to one of the nation’s largest refining hubs as authorities investigated the explosion’s cause and assessed any potential dangers.
A spokesperson for the Port Arthur Fire Department informed 12News NBC that the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire remains undetermined. Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens reported that, fortunately, no injuries were sustained and evacuation orders were not necessary.
Following the blast, local officials swiftly alerted residents. “Residents on the west side of town are advised to shelter in place after the explosion,” announced the Port Arthur police. The advisory was soon expanded to include residents in Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and areas south of Highway 73, urging them to remain indoors. Authorities confirmed the absence of immediate injuries and assured the public that “air quality and fire response are underway” as crews worked diligently to manage the incident.
Port Arthur city officials issued a shelter-in-place directive for residents in Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and areas south of Highway 73, extending from Stirlwell Boulevard westward.

Is your daily walk no longer keeping your waistline in check? You might be experiencing a common issue faced by many over the age of 60. Despite maintaining an active lifestyle, you may notice an expanding waistline, and it’s not due to a lack of effort. As we age, hormonal changes and increased muscle loss alter fat distribution and calorie burning, making traditional cardio routines less effective than they once were.
As a seasoned personal trainer and fitness educator with TRAINFITNESS, having spent four decades in the fitness industry, I frequently encounter clients over 60 who express concerns about their growing waistlines, even with regular walking or other cardiovascular activities. While this can be discouraging, it’s not an unavoidable fate. There are targeted exercises that can significantly help in this situation.
Here are five exercises you can perform right in your living room, requiring no equipment. These moves, which take only 15 to 20 minutes, focus on strengthening the specific muscles that can help trim and reshape your waist as you age.
I’m a personal trainer and fitness educator at TRAINFITNESS, and I’ve been working in the fitness industry for 40 years. One of the most common concerns I hear from clients over 60 is their waist thickening and expanding, even when they’re walking regularly or doing other forms of cardio. Although frustrating, this isn’t something you have to accept as inevitable, and there are specific standing exercises that can make a real difference.
These five exercises can be done in your living room with no equipment, take 15 to 20 minutes, and target the specific muscles that shrink and define your waist over time.
Why Cardio Alone Won’t Cut It
Shutterstock
After 60, our bodies go through hormonal shifts that change where we store fat. For women, dropping oestrogen levels mean more fat accumulates around the midsection rather than the hips and thighs. Men experience similar changes as testosterone declines. This isn’t just about gaining weight; it’s about fat redistributing itself to places it didn’t accumulate before.
Starting from age 30, we lose an average of 3 to 8% of muscle mass per decade, and that loss accelerates after 60. Muscle is essential for metabolism. The less we have, the slower our resting metabolic rate. Even if you’re eating the same as you were a decade ago, your body is likely storing more of it as fat.
Cardio doesn’t address this for two reasons. First, although it burns calories during the activity, it doesn’t preserve or build muscle. You might walk an hour a day and burn calories while you’re moving, but once you stop, your metabolism returns to its baseline. Walking is brilliant for your heart, but it won’t do much to shift your body composition.
Second, there’s the type of fat to consider. Visceral fat, which accumulates around organs and pushes your stomach out, is particularly hard to shift. Research shows resistance exercise is more effective at tackling this type of fat compared to cardio alone.
Why Standing Exercises Work
Shutterstock
Standing exercises build muscle, and muscle is metabolically energetic tissue. Every bit of muscle you add or maintain increases the number of calories your body burns throughout the day, not just during exercise. This creates a compounding effect over weeks and months that cardio simply can’t match.
When you perform standing exercises that engage your core and work multiple muscle groups, your body has to stabilise itself constantly. Your abdominals, obliques, and deep core muscles all fire to keep you upright and balanced. This strengthens and tones the muscles around your waist in a way that walking never will.
There’s also the afterburn effect. Resistance training creates micro-tears in muscle fibres that your body then has to repair. That repair process burns calories for 24 to 48 hours after you finish exercising. Cardio doesn’t create the same level of metabolic demand once you’ve stopped moving.
Standing exercises are also practical and sustainable for older adults. You don’t need to get down on the floor and back up again repeatedly. You’re not putting stress on joints through high-impact movements. You can do these in your living room with minimal or no equipment, which means you’re more likely to stick with them long-term.
Standing Torso Rotation
This exercise directly works your obliques, the muscles on the sides of your waist that create definition and control rotation. When these muscles strengthen, they pull in your waistline and improve steadiness during everyday movements such as reaching or turning.
Muscles Trained: Obliques, deep core stabilisers
How to Do It:
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent
Hold your arms out in front of you at chest height with your palms together
Keep your hips facing forward
Rotate your upper body to the right, turning as far as comfortable
Return to centre, then rotate to the left
Move smoothly and with control throughout
Recommended Sets and Reps: 15 to 20 rotations each side, working up to 3 sets
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Rotating from your hips instead of your waist; your hips should stay still and facing forward throughout
Swinging your whole lower body, which removes the work from the obliques and risks straining your lower back.
Standing Side Bend
Side bends target the obliques and the muscles running along your sides. These muscles are often neglected in daily life, so strengthening them can greatly change your waist measurement and create a more defined shape.
Muscles Trained: Obliques, lateral trunk muscles
How to Do It:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart
Place your right hand on your hip and extend your left arm overhead
Bend slowly to the right, sliding your right hand down your thigh while your left arm reaches over your head
You should feel a stretch along your left side
Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side
Recommended Sets and Reps: 12 to 15 bends each side for 2 to 3 sets
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Standing Knee to Elbow
This exercise combines core rotation with hip flexion, working both your obliques and your deeper abdominal muscles. It also improves balance and coordination, which becomes increasingly important after 60.
Muscles Trained: Obliques, deep abdominals, hip flexors
How to Do It:
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your hands behind your head
Lift your right knee up and across your body while bringing your left elbow down to meet it
Return to the starting position
Repeat on the other side (left knee to right elbow)
Recommended Sets and Reps: Start with 10 to 12 reps per side for 2 sets; work up to 15 to 20 per side for 3 sets as you get stronger
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Rushing through the movement and barely lifting the knee; you want to bring your knee up as high as comfortable and really contract your core as your elbow comes down
Treating it as a speed exercise; this is about feeling your muscles work, not getting through reps quickly
Standing Wood Chop
The wood chop movement engages your entire core through a diagonal rotation that mimics real-life movements. It works your obliques, rectus abdominis, and the stabilising muscles around your spine, all which add to a tighter waist.
Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart
Clasp your hands together, or hold a light weight if you have one
Start with your hands up near your right shoulder
Sweep them down diagonally across your body toward your left hip, as if chopping wood
Keep your arms relatively straight and let your torso rotate with the movement
Return to the starting position and complete all reps on one side before switching
Recommended Sets and Reps: 12 to 15 chops each side for 2 to 3 sets
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Bending your back or hunching over as you chop down; the movement should come from rotating your torso while keeping your spine neutral
Rounding your back, which puts unnecessary strain on it and removes the core engagement that makes this exercise effective.
Standing March with Twist
This exercise combines cardio with core work, getting your heart rate up slightly while specifically targeting your waist through rotation. The marching component also improves hip mobility and balance.
Muscles Trained: Obliques, hip flexors, core stabilisers
How to Do It:
Stand tall with your hands behind your head
March in place, lifting your knees high
As your right knee comes up, rotate your upper body to bring your left elbow toward that knee
As your left knee comes up, rotate to bring your right elbow toward it
Keep marching and twisting in a rhythmic pattern
Recommended Sets and Reps: Start with 30 seconds to 1 minute of continuous marching with twists; work up to 2 to 3 minutes as your fitness improves
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Dropping your elbows forward instead of rotating your torso; your hands should stay behind your head throughout, with the rotation coming from your core
Letting your chest drop or your back round; keep your chest lifted throughout.
How to Fit These Into Your Week
Shutterstock
Start with 2 to 3 sessions per week, leaving at least one day between sessions for recovery. You can do all five exercises in one session, or split them up throughout the week assuming that feels more manageable.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
A typical session: perform each exercise for the recommended reps or time, rest for 30 to 60 seconds between exercises, then repeat the circuit 2 to 3 times. The whole session shouldn’t take more than 15 to 20 minutes once you’re familiar with the movements.
You can do these on their own or add them to your existing walking routine. Some clients do their standing exercises in the morning and walk later in the day. Others prefer a short walk as a warm-up, then the exercises. There’s no single right way, just whatever helps you stick with it.
Check with your doctor before starting if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, recent surgery (especially abdominal surgery), severe osteoporosis, significant balance problems, or any heart condition. If you experience sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain, or severe shortness of breath during these exercises, stop immediately and get medical advice.
Anyone with lower back issues should be particularly careful with the twisting movements. Disc problems, sciatica, or chronic back pain all warrant a conversation with your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning.
What to Expect After 4 to 6 Weeks

After 4 to 6 weeks of steady training, at minimum twice a week, you can expect your waist size to drop by 1 to 2 inches. For some it will be more, for some less, depending on your fitness level, diet, and how much visceral fat you carry.
The first signs you’ll notice aren’t in the mirror. You’ll feel better posture and stronger core muscles before you see any visual change. Your clothes will fit differently before you notice a drastic decrease in your waist measurement. Trousers that are now tight around the waist will loosen. You’ll stand taller without thinking about it.
Visual results aren’t only about losing fat; you’re also toning muscles. Even if you don’t lose as much weight as you expect, you’ll notice your waist is smaller and more defined as your abdominal muscles tighten and hold everything together.
Diet Matters More Than You Think

Diet is the single biggest factor in whether you see results. You can’t out-train a bad diet, no matter how consistently you train. If you’re consuming a lot more calories than your body burns, you’ll still build muscle underneath, but you won’t be able to see it through the body fat.
Most people who succeed make small adjustments rather than dramatic ones: less processed food, more protein and vegetables, less alcohol, and more awareness of portion sizes. The exercise builds the base. Your diet determines how much of that result becomes visible.
Frequency matters more than intensity. Training twice a week for six months will give you better results than training every day for three weeks and then stopping. Be consistent, be patient, and the results will come.
