Massive Explosion at Texas Oil Refinery Sends Shockwaves Through Industry and Local Community

0

A colossal fire erupted at a Texas oil refinery on Monday night, filling the sky with dense smoke.

Responding swiftly, emergency services arrived at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, after numerous residents reported a thunderous explosion that shook their homes, as noted by KPLC.

The refinery, which processes 435,000 barrels of crude oil daily into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, sent plumes of black smoke high into the atmosphere.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens, the blast likely originated from an industrial heater, as reported by KDFM.

In response to the incident, authorities have issued a shelter-in-place order for the city’s western region, though fortunately, no injuries have been documented.

Residents in the surrounding area were also being encouraged to remain indoors, keep windows and odors closed and follow all guidance from local officials.

It comes amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported.

The shutdown has affected Americans at the pump especially, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas at $3.91, according to AAA.

That’s an increase of 25 percent from a year ago and a shock rise of 33 percent from one month ago, just before the start of the war in Iran.

The Wall Street Journal has since polled economists to see how high oil prices would have to rise – and how long they’d have to stay elevated – to push the US economy towards recession.

They said that oil would have to stay around $138 a barrel for about three months to push the US economy towards a recession.

‘I think that if oil were to hold above $100 for the next three months, we’d likely see very challenging economic conditions in the US,’ Tim Rezvan, managing director oil & gas equity research at KeyBanc Capital Markets, told the Daily Mail.

Rezvan emphasized that even if the war were to end in a week, the lasting economic damage from higher oil prices could pose long-term challenges for the US economy.

When asked how high oil prices would need to go to lift the probability of a US recession, responses ranged from $90 a barrel to $200 – with an average estimate of $138.

According to oil market expert Dan Doyle, founder of Reliance Well Services and Arena Resources, domestic US oil production will not save us.

‘The longer the war goes on, the greater the recessionary risk,” Doyle told the Daily Mail’

Economist Robert Fry said oil would need to be at $125 for eight weeks for the economy to be headed for recession.

‘My forecast is contingent on the assumption that the Strait of Hormuz will be fully open to tanker traffic by mid-April,’ Fry told the Wall Street Journal. ‘If it isn’t, oil prices will go much higher, and I will put a recession in my forecast.’

The economists see the probability of a US recession in the next 12 months at 32 percent – that’s up modestly from the 27 percent probability in the January survey.

However, President Donald Trump said Monday that the Strait would be open ‘real soon’ if a deal he’s teased with Iran works.

‘It’ll be jointly controlled,’ he said of the waterway.

When asked who would be jointly controlling it, Trump added, ‘maybe me, maybe me.’

‘Me and the ayatollah, whoever the ayatollah is, whoever the next ayatollah [is.],’ the President continued.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

DeSantis Approves New Farm Bill Amidst ‘Rural Renaissance’ Setback

SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) — On Monday, Governor Ron DeSantis visited Sebring to officially sign this year’s farm bill into law, highlighting the significant relief it promises to bring to Florida’s agricultural community.

This new legislation addresses a wide range of issues affecting Florida’s agriculture sector, including enhancing public safety, ensuring food security, fostering workforce development, and promoting land conservation.

Sean Duffy Debunks LaGuardia Crash Rumors: Setting the Record Straight

0

Sean Duffy has firmly dismissed circulating speculations regarding the staffing of the LaGuardia Airport control tower during a recent tragic incident. The transportation secretary addressed these concerns on Monday, following the collision between an Air Canada plane and a fire truck on a runway, which resulted in the deaths of both the pilot and copilot and left several others injured.

Speaking to the media, Duffy emphasized that LaGuardia Airport is adequately staffed, despite experiencing a shortage of air traffic controllers. He revealed that the airport currently employs 33 certified controllers, though the target is to increase this number to 37. Importantly, he clarified that contrary to some reports, more than one controller was present on duty at the time of the accident.

This clarification came in response to an earlier report by The New York Post, which suggested there was only a single controller in the tower during the incident. Duffy addressed this misinformation during a press conference, stating, “I did want to clarify that I’ve heard the rumor that there was only one controller in the tower and that’s not accurate.”

By setting the record straight, Duffy aims to quell any misconceptions about the airport’s operational capabilities and reassure the public regarding the professionalism and preparedness of the staff at LaGuardia.

‘I did want to clarify that I’ve heard the rumor that there was only one controller in the tower and that’s not accurate,’ he said in a press conference.

Jennifer Homendy, the chairwoman of the NTSB, said later that they did not yet have verified information on how many people were working in the tower at the time, promising to have it by Tuesday.

The secretary – who spoke alongside New York’s Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul and socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani – said the crash was a reminder to always follow safety precautions when flying.

‘When you’re traveling by air, wear your seatbelt. You see the videos of the air crash,’ he added, referring to the runway collision.

‘Wear your seatbelt when you’re on the airplane. As you’ve seen from last night, they do save lives.’

Duffy added that further information was pending an investigation by the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB).

‘I can´t give specifics on what went wrong,’ Duffy said, deferring to the NTSB, which will be holding a separate news conference later on Monday.

Canada also sent a team of investigators.

One of the two pilots killed in the LaGuardia Air Canada crash has been identified as 30-year-old Antoine Forest.

A flight attendant who was hurled 330 feet from the aircraft on Sunday night and survived has also been named as authorities investigate how the plane with 72 passengers on board smashed into a fire truck on the runway at 130mph.

Images from the scene showed the aircraft crumpled on the tarmac after the Montreal flight collided with the airport vehicle at 11.40pm on Sunday.

Air traffic control audio revealed the truck had been cleared to cross the runway for an unrelated issue before controllers urgently ordered it to ‘stop, stop, stop’ moments before impact.

Flight attendant Solange Tremblay survived the impact despite being thrown from the plane. Her daughter, Sarah Lépine, told TVA Nouvelles that Tremblay suffered a broken leg requiring surgery but no other serious injuries.

‘It’s nothing short of a miracle,’ Lépine said, noting her mother had been strapped into her jump seat during the crash.

Duffy said LaGuardia is 'well-staffed' but faces a shortage of controllers. He said there are 33 certified controllers but the goal is to have 37. However, more than one controller was on duty at the time of the accident, he noted, disputing rumors which had said otherwise

Speaking to reporters in Florida on Monday morning in response to the collision, President Trump said: ‘They made a mistake. It’s a dangerous business. That’s terrible.’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that the accident was ‘deeply saddening.’

LaGuardia was shut down until the early afternoon due to the crash, forcing thousands of passengers to scramble while airports across the country are facing severe delays due to the Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

The Port Authority identified the two people in the fire truck as Sgt. Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez.

They suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Garcia said.

One was expected to be released Monday while the other will stay in the hospital for observation, she added.

The fire truck was traveling across the runway to respond to a United Airlines flight, whose pilot had reported ‘an issue with odor,’ said Garcia.

It was the first fatal crash at LaGuardia in 34 years, Garcia said.

There were 72 passengers and four crew members aboard the Jazz Aviation flight operating on behalf of Air Canada, according to the airline.

The flight originated at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

Hours after the crash, the plane remained on the runway with its crumpled nose tilted upward.

The air traffic controller tried to warn the fire truck.

‘Stop, stop, stop, Truck 1. Stop, stop, stop,’ the transmission says. ‘Stop, Truck 1.’ The controller can then be heard frantically diverting an incoming aircraft from landing.

Air traffic controllers are not impacted by the partial government shutdown that has caused long delays at airport security checkpoints in recent days.

They have been affected by past shutdowns. The FAA has been chronically short on air traffic controllers for years.

Former FAA air traffic control chief Mike McCormick said LaGuardia has not had perennial staffing problems, but the tower would have been lightly staffed during the overnight shift at the time of the crash.

LaGuardia is one of 35 major US airports with an advanced surface surveillance system designed to help keep track of planes and vehicles crossing the airport.

An alarm heard in the background of the air traffic control audio was likely from the system and would have alerted the tower to the potential collision, McCormick said.

‘It´s an aid in a situation like this,’ he said, but the system doesn´t know if someone has given clearance for a vehicle to cross a runway.

FAA statistics show there were 1,636 runway incursions last year.

Sheriff Urges Captor to Release Nancy Guthrie as Family Seeks Justice Amid Investigation Missteps

0

As the search for Nancy Guthrie approaches the two-month mark, the sheriff heading the investigation is issuing a direct message to those who might be involved, while her family continues to urge the public to focus on the case.

In a recent conversation with News 4 Tucson, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stood by his department’s approach to the investigation. Despite the ongoing mystery, he expressed confidence in the decisions made at the outset of the case.

“Honestly, I stand by my team and their hard work,” Nanos stated. “I don’t regret the timing of releasing the crime scene or any related decisions.”

Guthrie, aged 84, and the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished on the night of January 31 after having dinner with her family. She was reported missing on February 1 when she didn’t arrive at church.

Two images of the Nancy Guthrie suspect on her porch.

A source with knowledge of the situation informed Fox News Digital that two images of the suspect from the Nancy Guthrie doorbell video were captured on separate occasions.

Authorities have released doorbell camera images showing a masked suspect outside her Catalina Foothills home the night she vanished. Investigators say they continue to rely heavily on digital evidence, including cellphone data, surveillance video and other forensic analysis, but have not announced any arrests.

When asked what he would say to the person or people behind Guthrie’s disappearance, Nanos issued a direct appeal.

“Just give her up. Let her go,” he said. “Take her to a clinic, a hospital. Drop her off. Just let her go.”

As investigators continue their work, Guthrie’s family is urging the public to take a fresh look at anything that could help break the case.

“We desperately ask this community for renewed attention to our mom’s case,” the family wrote in an Instagram post shared over the weekend. “Please consult camera footage, journal notes, text messages, observations, or conversations that in retrospect may hold significance.”

“No detail is too small. It may be the key.”

The family pointed to several critical timelines, including the evening of Jan. 31, the early morning hours of Feb. 1 and the late evening of Jan. 11, suggesting previously released video of a masked man at Guthrie’s doorstep weeks before her disappearance could be significant.

“We continue to believe it is Tucsonans, and the greater Southern Arizona community, that hold the key to finding resolution in this case,” the statement said. “Someone knows something. It’s possible a member of this community has information that they do not even realize is significant.”

“Someone knows something,” the family wrote. “It’s possible a member of this community has information that they do not even realize is significant.”

News 4 Tucson’s special also highlighted the deep toll Guthrie’s disappearance has taken on Tucson, where colleagues, neighbors and strangers alike have rallied around her family with vigils, tips, flowers and handwritten messages of hope.

Former colleagues described Guthrie as a quiet but powerful force in southern Arizona, someone whose work left a lasting mark on public health, education and journalism. Jacqueline Sharkey, a former University of Arizona professor who worked with Guthrie for decades, remembered her as “this quiet leader who was so effective without ever working at it,” according to the outlet.

Others recalled Guthrie’s role in helping save the poison information center at the University of Arizona, gathering more than 20,000 signatures before the internet era to keep the program alive — work that one colleague said went on to benefit thousands of Arizonans.

Dave Cuillier, who worked with Guthrie on the journalism school’s advisory council, called her “a huge champion of journalism and the University of Arizona” and said “she had a quiet power,” according to News 4 Tucson.

The special also showed how support for Guthrie has spread well beyond her neighborhood.

One moment highlighted Melanie, who began making yellow ribbons of hope to keep attention on the case — something she and a friend had previously done for other missing women, including Laci Peterson and Natalee Holloway. This time, compelled by Guthrie’s story, she began making them again and sending them to Tucson.

The ribbons are now being worn by employees at El Charro, the Tucson restaurant where Guthrie had lunch with her daughters just months before her disappearance.

Ray Flores, president of Flores Concepts, said the case hit hard after staff realized “it wasn’t just a simple lost person issue.” Though he said he did not know Nancy personally, he recalled seeing the closeness between Guthrie and her daughters during that visit and said the pain has been felt across the city.

“You could tell they were a very loving family,” Flores said, according to News 4 Tucson. “Whenever you have that kind of pain hit, it affects you because you can feel it in your own community and your own heart.”

El Charro workers have embraced the ribbon campaign as a way to keep awareness alive as the weeks drag on.

“We’re still supporting them, and we’re still thinking about them every single day,” one employee said.

Beyond the ribbons and tributes, the special showed how Guthrie’s disappearance has left a lasting mark on her own neighborhood.

The Guthrie family lays flowers at Nancy Guthrie's home

At the same time, neighbors in the Catalina Foothills have quietly organized their own efforts — gathering surveillance footage, cross-referencing video from nearby homes and passing potentially useful material on to law enforcement.

One neighbor told the station the group’s goal is simple: to help investigators by being “targeted and useful.”

Residents say they are also checking in more often, taking extra security measures and even considering reviving a neighborhood watch.

The special described the case as “a community united with one plea” — bring her home.

That support has only deepened as the investigation has stretched on. Outside Guthrie’s home, a growing shrine of flowers, candles and handwritten notes has become a symbol of the community’s heartbreak and resolve. Savannah Guthrie and family members returned to the site earlier this month, visibly emotional as they took in the tributes left behind.

In their latest message, the family made clear that their focus remains singular.

“We miss our mom with every breath, and we cannot be in peace until she is home,” they wrote. “We cannot grieve. We can only ache and wonder.”

A reward of more than $1 million is being offered for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip through law enforcement.

St. Simons Island Dentist’s Defense Reveals Texts to Another Man on Shooting Night

0

The prosecution has concluded its case in the trial of Suzanne Mericle, a dentist from St. Simons Island, accused of fatally shooting her boyfriend at their shared residence in Hall County, Georgia, on March 7, 2025.

In Gainesville, Georgia, the courtroom has been the center of attention as the trial unfolds against Mericle, who is facing serious charges of murder. She stands accused of killing James David Barron by shooting him through a door at their Lake Lanier home. Prosecutors argue that Mericle’s actions were driven by rage, claiming she became ‘unhinged’ after discovering Barron’s infidelity and financial gifts to another woman named Lilia. In contrast, Mericle’s defense asserts she acted in self-defense, alleging that Barron was abusive.

The prosecution wrapped up its presentation with the testimony of their final witness on Monday. Matthew Mefford, an investigator with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, was a key figure in the proceedings, having taken the stand initially on Friday. During his testimony, the court was shown a three-hour video of him interrogating Mericle on the night of the incident.

To bolster their case, prosecutors also introduced evidence from Mericle’s phone, highlighting her internet search activity. Notably, they revealed that she had searched for information about the Hall County jail approximately three hours before making her first 911 call on the night of the shooting. The defense, however, pointed out that these searches were later deleted, as indicated in the report.

Cross-examination lasts six hours

The state’s final witness finished his testimony Monday. Matthew Mefford, an investigator with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, first took the stand Friday while prosecutors played a three-hour-long video of him questioning Mericle the night of the shooting.

Prosecutors concluded their questioning with internet search data from Mericle’s phone. According to the report, Mercile searched the Hall County jail roughly three hours before she first called 911 the night of the shooting. The defense pointed out that those searches were deleted according to the report.

Mefford was also asked to read notes that were saved in Mericle’s Notes app that appeared to be messages she was going to send to Barron or journal entries documenting her feelings about Barron.

The defense had Mefford go through body camera video and his own interrogation video, stopping at various points to ask questions. One of the points was about Mericle continuing to ask investigators whether Barron was alive while she was being questioned the night of the shooting.

“It seems to me, and you can disagree with me if I’m wrong, she seemed to want to know if he’s alive or not before she’s gonna tell you about the things that have happened. Do you agree or disagree?” Brett Willis, Mericle’s attorney, asked.

 “Disagree,” Mefford responded.

“Tell me why you disagree,” Willis asked.

“I think she was cleaning up the scene. She knew that she had made a mistake and she was trying to figure out, I think she probably knew he was dead because she did make a comment that there’s no pulse, but she’s just at this point trying to figure out the story she’s going to stick with,” Mefford explained from the witness stand.

Mericle said during the initial interrogation and on body camera video that she was trying to shoot the lock off the bedroom door because Barron locked himself inside with her phone, journal, and keys. The bullet ultimately went through Barron’s arm and into his chest, killing him.

Investigators believe he was standing along the wall next to the door based on where his body fell, but Brett Willis, Mericle’s attorney, argued there was no way Mericle could have known where he was in the room when she shot her gun.

“If she’s announcing ‘I’m about to shoot,’ Wouldn’t you think you’d go further back into the room or the closet? There’s a closet in there, right? There’s a closet there,” Willis said.

“Coming around, yes, but I can’t speak to that. I just know that he was standing off to the side. He was not standing directly in front of the door,” Mefford responded.

New man enters the chat

The defense’s cross-examination also revealed text messages sent between Mericle and a man named Charlie. Willis said Mericle told investigators that she was considering leaving Barron because of the situation with Lilia.

Willis had Mefford read text messages between Mericle and Charlie, which started just a few days before the shooting. Charlie expressed his admiration for Mericle and asked to see her again. Mericle told him she was going to talk to Barron about their relationship.

Mefford confirmed Mericle deleted all but two messages between her and Charlie. Those two messages were sent between 9 and 11 p.m. the night of March 7, 2025.

Willis asked Mefford what Mericle’s new motive would be for killing Barron that night if she already knew about what was going on with Lilia and was considering leaving him.

“That’s what’s new, is the Charlie English stuff?” Willis asked.

“But that’s not new to Ms. Mericle, that’s only new to Mr. Barron, right?” Willis said.

“Allegedly,” Mefford answered.

“It’s not going to enrage or unhinge Ms. Mericle to find the text that she knows she’s got, right?” Willis asked.

“Yes, but also keep in mind we cannot confirm that he didn’t know, but I would assume and make the assumption with you that he didn’t,” Mefford said.

Directed verdict

The defense also asked the judge for a ‘directed verdict.’ This is where a judge takes the case away from the jury and grants an acquittal if they feel like the prosecution did not provide sufficient evidence to prove its case. The judge in Mericle’s case denied the defense’s motion.

Man Charged with Murder After Girlfriend’s Body Found in River; Disturbing Abuse Details Emerge

0

A man from Washington is facing serious allegations after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend and allegedly discarding her body in a river.

On March 20, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Juan Manuel Delgado Jr. had been apprehended on second-degree murder charges related to the death of Krista Hunt, his girlfriend.

According to a probable cause statement obtained by Oxygen, Delgado recounted to investigators that the last time he saw Krista was on January 27. He claimed they had an argument in his truck, which led her to insist that he pull over on State Route 20 in Concrete to let her out.

Missing person reports were filed days later, on February 1, by Krista’s mother, Pamela Hunt, after her attempts to contact her daughter were unsuccessful.

Krista Hunt’s Mother Alleged Her Daughter Was Being Abused

In an interview with KING 5, Pamela disclosed that shortly before Krista vanished, she had taken her daughter to the hospital, claiming Krista had been abused by her boyfriend.

“She did in fact have a broken leg. She said he had boot-stomped her leg and her chest,” Pamela told the station. “She said one time he set a timer and told her he was going to hit her every 15 minutes.”

Pamela elaborated on the abuse allegations in a GoFundMe launched to help find her missing daughter, saying Krista had also been “strangled” and had “two black eyes.”

“Doctors warned that if she was strangled again,” she wrote, “she might not survive.”

Investigators later obtained medical records, per the probable cause statement, connected to the December 2025 hospital visit, which showed Krista also told the medical staff that she’d been abused by a “known perpetrator.”

“She had been slapped in the head, choked, kicked, and punched,” the court documents read. “She expressed pain in her left chest and right leg. She said while she was being choked, she almost passed out. Krista also reported skin injuries from a lighter being used to injure her.”

She also told the hospital staff she’d been “dragged across the road,” hit with a belt and “punched in the face,” per the court records.

Medical tests confirmed she’d been been asphyxiated, had a fracture in her right fibula, broken ribs, and contusions on her face and legs, per the court records.

She told the hospital staff that she did not want to report the alleged abuse to law enforcement authorities.

Juan Manuel Delgado Jr. Shot Himself in the Face

According to the probable cause statement, deputies went to talk with Juan’s mother, identified only as Alice, on February 3. She told investigators that she’d last seen Krista getting into her son’s truck at a towing company.

A few minutes after deputies left, she called 911 to report that her son shot himself in the face at a tavern she was remodeling in Concrete.

“Juan had laid plastic sheeting down on the floor in the basement area of the tavern. Alice went downstairs after speaking with deputies and wrestled a .22 revolver styled pistol (registered to Alice) from Juan,” authorities wrote. “Juan received injuries to his left cheek. As he received treatment by medical aid, he said, ‘I miss Krista.’”

Witness Reports Seeing Juan Delgado’s Vehicle Stopped

As the search for Krista continued, investigators talked with two witnesses who reported that Juan allegedly came to a property on Jan. 27 and was “very distraught, crying and was described as violently sobbing.” He also claimed that while he and Krista were fighting she got hit by a car, authorities noted in the court documents.

Investigators also spoke with a paramedic who reported finding a black GMC Sierra unoccupied along State Route 20 on Jan. 26 with its flashers on. Juan was found at the scene and claimed he’d been having vehicle issues, yet he “appeared to be wet,” per the affidavit. He claimed he had been washing up in a nearby creek.

Investigators continued to search the area near where the vehicle had been stopped, per the probable cause statement, and discovered human remains in Skagit River on March 12. Days later, on March 18, the sheriff’s office confirmed the remains belonged to Krista.

Skagit County Coroner Hayley Thompson said in a statement to Oxygen that no cause or manner of death has been determined in the case, which “remains under active investigation.”

The probable cause statement reported Krista had “traumatic injuries to include multiple broken or fractured ribs, multiple broken spinous processes, and a broken jaw.”

Investigators also found blood inside the vehicle Juan drove, along with damage to a side mirror, authorities said.

“Injuries sustained by Krista were reported to have been caused by great force,” a detective noted in the probable cause statement citing the autopsy findings,”and that it was possible to sustain such injuries if she had been struck by a vehicle.”

Where is Juan Delgado Now?

Juan is currently being held at the Skagit County jail on a $1 million bond, according to records reviewed by Oxygen. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges against him March 26.

After an initial appearance in court, Krista’s brother Rand Hunt told KING 5 that her death has been difficult for the entire family.

“I can’t imagine the pain my mom is going through right now,” he said. “I know the pain I’m going through. And it’s hard … He stole 60 years of my relationship with Krista.”

Oxygen reached out to Juan’s attorney, but did not receive an immediate response.

Unprecedented $800 Million Oil Trades Precede Trump’s Major Announcement: Market Shockwaves Explained

0

The early morning hours in New York, specifically around 6:50 am, are typically quiet in the trading world. Yet, on this particular day, the West Texas Intermediate May futures market witnessed an unexpected frenzy. Within just 60 seconds, over $800 million was exchanged in oil futures transactions, sparking interest and speculation among traders.

But it showed that all of a sudden, a substantial sum of money was bet on oil prices dropping and the stock market rising.
Donald Trump has said he is negotiating with Iran, something Iran has denied.

This sudden activity coincided with a significant announcement from then-President Donald Trump. He revealed, “I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East.”

Trump’s statement went on to detail that the discussions had been both extensive and constructive, with plans to continue throughout the week. In light of these positive developments, he instructed the Department of Defense to delay any planned military actions against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days. This pause was contingent upon the success of the ongoing diplomatic talks.

In response to these developments, the S&P 500 futures saw a sharp rise, while crude oil prices experienced a significant drop. The market’s reaction underscored the potential impact of diplomatic breakthroughs on global economic indicators, leaving traders to ponder the future implications of these unfolding events.

The S&P 500 futures market surged and crude oil prices dropped through the floor.

And whoever made those trades made an incredible amount of money.

A White House spokesperson brushed off the suspicious activity.

“The White House does not tolerate any administration official illegally profiteering off of insider knowledge, and any implication that officials are engaged in such activity without evidence is baseless and irresponsible reporting,” Kush Desai told FT.

“No negotiations have been held with the US, and fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” he said.

“Iranian people demand complete and remorseful punishment of the aggressors.

“All Iranian officials stand firmly behind their supreme leader and people until this goal is achieved.”

Today’s future market trades are not the first time eyebrows have been raised at suspicious bets before a Trump decision.

Betting app Kalshi has refused to pay out $77 million in winnings to punters who bet Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would be out of office by March 1.

Meanwhile on Polymarket, 150 accounts bet more than a million dollars that the US would strike Iran the next day.

Breakthrough in Nancy Guthrie Case: New Biological Evidence Uncovered and Reward Doubles Following Generous Donation

0

In a significant development in the search for Nancy Guthrie, new ‘biological evidence’ has been reportedly found at her residence. This discovery coincides with an anonymous donor contributing a six-figure sum to increase the reward for information that could lead to either Nancy’s safe return or the capture of her presumed abductor.

Nancy Guthrie, aged 84, was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31. Authorities suspect she was taken around 2 a.m. on February 1, marking her disappearance as a likely abduction.

As the search for the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie reaches its 18th day, investigators have yet to make any arrests concerning her disappearance.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is rigorously pursuing leads in this ongoing case.

According to police sources cited by the New York Post, investigators have discovered DNA evidence at her Arizona home that does not match Nancy Guthrie’s, potentially offering a new lead in the investigation.

It’s unclear where the evidence was uncovered, whether it was shared with the FBI, and if authorities are treating it as a potential lead.

Investigators said in a recent update that they were ‘currently analyzing biological evidence’ found in Guthrie’s home, and the DNA profiles were under lab analysis.

The sheriff’s department said in a statement that the number of profiles was a part of an active investigation.

Authorities initially announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy’s return or the arrest and conviction of her alleged kidnapper.

The reward then doubled on the 12th day of the investigation. The sheriff’s office confirmed Wednesday that an anonymous $100,000 donation has been added, along with an additional $2,500 through 88 Crime – bringing the reward to $202,500.

Attorney and President of Milwaukee Crime Stoppers, Michael Hupy, previously announced that he would be offering $100,000 through his organization.

The sheriff’s department hasn’t confirmed whether Hupy is the ‘anonymous donor’ who put up the additional $100,000.

Reports previously circulated that the sheriff’s department was using lie detector tests on potential suspects, but authorities later clarified that the polygraph tests were ordered for new hires.

Authorities have also obtained DNA evidence at Nancy’s home, which has been sent for lab analysis, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nancy was first reported missing after she failed to show up for a weekly virtual church service at her friend’s house.

Her family reported her missing, and authorities arrived at her Tucson home to find a disturbing scene.

The elderly woman was nowhere to be found, her front camera was disconnected, and there was blood on her front door.

It took the FBI 10 days to recover the lost surveillance footage, which later revealed that a masked individual had disabled the front camera.

The FBI said the suspect was believed to be male, approximately 5’9”-5’10” tall, of average build, and carrying a black backpack.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said on Tuesday that the suspect appeared to be wearing a ring under his black gloves.

‘I look at the same photo you look at and I get it, I see it,’ he told NBC News.

Should ransom demands be met or ignored when a loved one is kidnapped?

Authorities have been met with many challenges in the case, including Nancy's age and health, the secluded area where she was allegedly taken, and increased media attention. Nancy and Savannah are pictured here in 2023 on the set of the Today Show

‘I’m going to give that to my team. They’ll look at that. They’ll analyze it and we’ll see. Maybe, maybe it is,’ Nanos added.

TMZ and two local Arizona news stations have received several ransom notes allegedly from Nancy’s captors.

The news outlets have reported that the notes demanded millions in Bitcoin. TMZ shared on Wednesday that they received another demand, calling the note ‘sophisticated,’ adding it ‘puts the media right in the middle of it.’

The letter reportedly demanded $6 million in a different form of cryptocurrency and ‘graphically describes the consequences if the ransom isn’t paid,’ the outlet stated.

False hope for a break in the case came on Saturday when a Special Weapons and Tactics team raided a home near Nancy’s residence.

Authorities were also seen searching a grey Range Rover and detained the driver. Multiple individuals were detained and questioned, but no arrests were made.

Another brief glimmer of hope came when law enforcement recovered a glove near Nancy’s property that appeared to match the ones the suspect was wearing in the surveillance video.

However, Sheriff Nanos said the glove yielded no new leads and failed to match the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database of DNA profiles of arrestees.

Sources have also revealed to TMZ that investigators are considering the possibility that Nancy was taken across the border.

The sheriff’s office said in a media release on Wednesday that they’ve received reports of their department working with Mexican authorities and utilizing polygraph tests, but wouldn’t be confirming that information at this time.

Nanos has previously said that the investigation could take years, but authorities wouldn’t stop trying to find answers for the Guthrie family.

When asked whether he still believed Nancy was alive, Nanos said on Tuesday: ‘They ask me, do I have proof of life? I ask them, is there proof of death?’

Central Land Council Calls for Enhanced Support Amid Rising Fuel and Living Costs in Remote Areas

Remote communities across the country are home to some of the most economically disadvantaged households. Unfortunately, these areas are also experiencing the greatest impact from the escalating cost of living.

In these communities, Aboriginal residents are facing diesel prices of $4 per litre, which is twice the rate found in urban areas. This surge in fuel costs is driving up the prices of essential goods and exacerbating food insecurity issues.

Many residents in these remote areas rely on the federal government’s remote area allowance, designed to subsidize essential costs. However, there is growing concern that this program is inadequate under current economic conditions.

“While the subsidy offers some relief, the savings are quickly wiped out by rising fuel prices,” explained Dr. Josie Douglas, General Manager of the Central Land Council and a Wardaman woman.

“The cost of essential items, such as fresh produce, is expected to soar, making it increasingly difficult for families to keep pace.”

The scheme has been in place since 1984 and comes in the form of a supplementary payment to income support recipients in remote areas.

More than half of allowance recipients live in the Northern Territory and are supported by the weekly payment of $9.10 for singles, $15.60 for couples and $3.65 per child.

Since 2000, remote communities have faced living costs 40 per cent higher than capital cities. Yet, the remote rental allowance has only increased twice in its 42 years – the last increase being over 25 years ago.

The CLC say the payment has failed to keep pace with reality and are pushing for an increase to support their communities facing poverty and insecurity.

“With fuel prices hitting our people so hard, it’s time for the government to raise it,” Dr Douglas said.

“Cost of living pressures are being felt nationwide, but low-income families in remote communities are bearing the brunt.”

The nation is facing rising fuel prices, with Energy Minister Chris Bowen saying it would be “sensible” for many to consider working from home to ease pressure on national supply.

Bowen’s comments echo the recommendations of the International Energy Agency who have encouraged working from home, using public transport, and reducing highway speeds by 10km/hr.

No such order has been put in place in any jurisdiction yet. Some are opposed, with NSW Premier Chris Minns saying it “wouldn’t make much of a difference”.

“Most of our employees are nurses, paramedics, police officers, firefighters. We just can’t issue that order,” he said on Monday.

Unlock Stronger Legs in Just 6 Minutes: The Ultimate Chair Workout for Over 60s

0

Forget the gym—your legs can get a solid workout with just a chair and a mere six minutes of your time.

Once you hit 60, leg strength quietly emerges as a crucial element of overall health. Strong quadriceps, glutes, and hip muscles are vital for everyday activities, like ascending stairs or rising from a chair effortlessly. By keeping these muscles engaged, you enhance your confidence in daily movements. With the right exercises, you can continue to build strength and muscle well into your sixties and beyond.

Think of quick routines, like the one below, as a “fitness snack” rather than a full meal. They aren’t meant to replace your regular workouts; instead, they complement them. In my coaching experience, I advise clients to integrate these brief strength sessions throughout the week. These short bursts of activity help to reinforce movement patterns, activate muscles, and sustain progress, especially on those days when you can’t fit in a full workout.

The 6-Minute Chair Routine for Building Leg Muscle Faster Than Squats After 60 is designed to target the major muscles of the lower body through simple seated exercises. Each movement emphasizes controlled repetitions and consistent tension, strengthening the thighs and hips. All you need is a sturdy chair and a few minutes of focused effort.

The 6 Minute Chair Routine That Builds Leg Muscle Faster Than Squats After 60 targets the lower body’s major muscles with simple seated movements. Each exercise focuses on controlled reps and steady tension to help strengthen the thighs and hips. All you need is a sturdy chair and a few focused minutes.

The Workout Name: The 6 Minute Chair Routine That Builds Leg Muscle After 60

What you need: A sturdy chair and six focused minutes. This routine uses controlled seated exercises to challenge your legs while keeping the setup simple and joint-friendly.

The Routine:

  1. Chair Squats
  2. Seated Knee Extensions
  3. Seated Marches

Directions

Chair Squats

Chair squats strengthen the quads and glutes, which play a major role in standing, walking, and climbing stairs. This movement reinforces one of the most important patterns your body uses every day. I like starting with chair squats because they quickly wake up the largest muscles in the lower body while staying approachable for many fitness levels. Over time, stronger legs translate directly into smoother everyday movement.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand in front of your chair with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower toward the chair.
  4. Lightly tap the chair with your hips.
  5. Drive through your whole foot to stand tall again.
  6. Repeat for the target reps.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Pause chair squats, slow tempo squats, hands-free squats.

Form Tip: Keep your weight through your whole foot to stay balanced as you stand.

Seated Knee Extensions

Seated knee extensions place focused tension on the quadriceps, the muscles at the front of your thighs. These muscles play a major role in leg strength and knee stability. I often include this movement because it isolates the quads in a joint-friendly position while still building muscular endurance. Consistent reps help restore strength and firmness through the thighs.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps and hip flexors.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall near the front edge of the chair.
  2. Place both feet flat on the floor.
  3. Brace your core lightly and keep your posture upright.
  4. Extend one leg until it is straight.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Lower with control and switch legs.
  7. Continue alternating.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 sets of 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Slow tempo extensions, hold at the top, alternating rhythm.

Form Tip: Fully straighten your knee at the top of each rep.

Seated Marches

Seated marches strengthen the hip flexors and supporting core muscles while improving coordination between the hips and legs. This movement reinforces the same mechanics your body uses during walking and stair climbing. I like using seated marches as a finisher because they keep the legs working while also building endurance through the hips. Over time, this helps your lower body feel stronger and more responsive.

Muscles Trained: Hip flexors, lower abdominals, and core stabilizers.

How to Do It:

  1. Sit tall with your hands resting at your sides.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Lift one knee toward your chest.
  4. Lower with control.
  5. Lift the opposite knee.
  6. Continue alternating for the full set.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 2 sets of 30 seconds. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Higher knee marches, slower marches, hands-free marches.

Form Tip: Stay tall through your spine as you lift each knee.

Best Daily Habits to Build Leg Strength After 60

Leg strength improves fastest when short training sessions pair with supportive daily habits. Your muscles respond well to frequent activation and steady movement throughout the week. In my coaching experience, adults over 60 see the best results when they combine structured workouts with small strength “snacks” like this routine. These quick sessions help reinforce the work you’re already doing. Consistency drives progress. Use the habits below to support your results.

  • Train your lower body several days per week. Frequent stimulus supports muscle retention.
  • Add short strength snacks throughout the week. Quick sessions keep your legs active.
  • Walk regularly during the day. Daily steps reinforce leg strength and coordination.
  • Focus on controlled reps. Slower movement increases time under tension.
  • Prioritize protein intake. Adequate protein supports muscle repair and growth.
  • Progress gradually over time. Small increases in reps keep your legs adapting.

Stay consistent with this six-minute chair routine and these habits, and many adults over 60 begin to notice stronger legs, better movement control, and more confidence during everyday activities.
