Liverpool are thought to be close to a deal for Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, but a report has claimed that still isn’t the club’s priority position to address this summer.
Frimpong was a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s success at Leverkusen, flourishing in an attacking wing-back role that may not exist under whoever succeeds the Real Madrid-bound coach.
It may therefore be in Leverkusen’s best interest to cash in, and for Frimpong to move on. The Dutchman is thought to have a release clause that will allow him to leave for €40m (£34m) at most.
Liverpool weren’t actively looking to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, seemingly satisfied with handing a more prominent role to Conor Bradley. But with a Frimpong deal somewhat opportunistic, it appears to have jumped ahead of a more pressing issue.
The Athletic writes that Frimpong would be “keen” on joining Liverpool, counting Ryan Gravenberch among his friends and also already familiar with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo. Both he and Leverkusen want the situation resolved “as soon as possible”.

But because Liverpool have been more keen on recruiting a left-back, according to that report, the Reds will have to make a swift decision on whether to push on with Frimpong or leave it.
Left-back is supposedly still considered the greater priority, with Andrew Robertson no longer the player he was and the potential to upgrade on Kostas Tsimikas. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is the target most frequently linked, although would be more expensive than Frimpong.
Liverpool, who could wind up losing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer next summer and still need to replace Virgil van Dijk in the long-term, are also in the market for a centre-back and are among the clubs considered to have a good chance of signing Dean Huijsen.
There’s also the not so small matter of requiring a striker to upgrade on an inconsistent Darwin Nunez, and no limitless pot to spend with.

Meanwhile, paramedics raced to the scene and provided medical assistance, but they were unable to save Joss, who was pronounced dead.
Joss died at the scene despite paramedics’ best efforts to save him, TMZ reported.
The Bexar County Detention Center is where 56-year-old suspect Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja is being detained. His bond was set at $200,000, and he has been charged with criminal first-degree murder.
He was taken into custody around 6.30 am on June 2 after being apprehended at 7:05 p.m. on June 1.

Following the murder, Kern de Gonzales wrote on Instagram that they had been verbally abused by locals for years, using homophobic epithets and threatening to set their house on fire.
Kern de Gonzales continued by saying that the house had burned down as a result of years of threats from their neighbors, to which Gonzales and Joss had reported the threats, but the police had not acted.
Kern de Gonzales called the attack a gay hate crime on Joss’ Facebook page.
“Our investigation has found no evidence whatsoever to indicate that the murder of Mr. Joss was related to his sexual orientation,” the San Antonio Police Department said in a statement.

A three-year contract is on the table for Alonso, who confirmed his imminent departure from Bayer Leverkusen last week after Madrid agreed a compensation fee of between €5m-€10m (£4.2m-£8.4m). He will replace Carlo Ancelotti, who is expected to take charge of the Brazil national team.
It was initially expected that Alonso would only join Madrid after this summer’s Club World Cup, with former manager Santiago Solari lined up to return to the dugout for the tournament, but Cadena COPE were the first to reveal that Alonso’s arrival has now been brought forwards.

“I heard mixed opinions but the only opinion I have is I owe it to the players and fans to try to win a game of football and if Conor Bradley can’t go on because he is tired and I have Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench, I will bring him in because we want to win this game of football.
“He was very close for us to win it because he had two or three passes – what makes him so special. For me, it is quite simple if I want to win, I bring him in and that’s what I did and for the fans, they are entitled to have their own opinion.”
Alexander-Arnold is expected to sign a long-term deal at Real Madrid, following in the footsteps of Michael Owen and Steve McManaman, who left Liverpool for the Spanish capital aged 24 and 27 respectively – the latter also departing on a free transfer after opting against signing a new contract.
