Barcelona travel to Lisbon for the second time in the space of six weeks as they face Benfica in the Champions League round of 16.

Barcelona’s barnstorming 5-4 victory across the Iberian Peninsula in January helped them secure a second place finish in the league phase which meant they avoided the play-off round. Benfica, on the contrary, were forced to endure two extra games and were given a scare by Ligue 1 Monaco despite winning the away leg 1-0.

The hosts have had plenty of time off given that their recent Primeira Liga duel with Gli Vicente was postponed. They were last in action on February 26 when they beat Braga 1-0.

Barcelona didn’t enjoy such a luxury at the weekend, but they did produce an emphatic 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad which ensured they remained at the summit of La Liga. Hansi Flick’s side stuttered towards the end of 2024, but they’re unbeaten in 2025 and appear one of the strongest contenders to go all the way in this competition.

It’s been a frustrating campaign for Andreas Christensen, and the former Chelsea defender is set for another spell on the sidelines due to a muscle injury. He’s not expected back until April at the earliest.

Ronald Araujo was on the scoresheet at the weekend but could drop out of the starting XI in Lisbon on Wednesday. Flick seems to prefer the centre-back partnership of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez. Araujo also scored an own goal on his previous visit to the Portuguese capital.

Marc Bernal and Marc-Andre ter Stegen remain sidelined for the visitors, but there’s hope Gavi will shake off an illness in time to feature.

Barca’s impressive run of form continued at the weekend, and while there may be a few concerns over potential player burnout later on this term, the Catalonians currently look fresh. Their superstars are purring and Benfica have little chance of slowing them down.

However, the Bianconeri head into the return leg off the back of an impressive 1-0 win over Inter in the Derby d’Italia which moved them up to fourth in the Serie A table. The visitors have lost just one away game all season (at league leaders Napoli).

PSV’s dominance from 2023/24 hasn’t carried over into the current campaign, but they’ve got a shot at reaching the round of 16 in back-to-back seasons. The Dutch outfit are chasing the in-form Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie table after they picked up their third successive draw in the league at the weekend.

PSV’s American contingent have all succumbed to long-term injuries, with Ricardo Pepi ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up a serious knee injury. Malik Tillman and Sergino Dest are also absent.

They had availability issues in defence last week, and such concerns haven’t been totally alleviated in time for the second leg. Bosz will likely be without Rick Karsdorp and Olivier Boscagli for Juve’s visit.

Manuel Locatelli, Kenan Yildiz and Andrea Cambiaso were all utilised off the bench at the weekend and are contenders to start in Eindhoven. Mbangula, last week’s match-winner, could also get the nod.

In a post on its X page, the USCG Alaska said the they have located “an aircraft matching the description of the missing plane.” They said the aircraft was found approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome, Alaska.

The USCG Alaska said that they had found “an aircraft matching the description of the missing plane” in a post on its X page. According to them, the plane was discovered around 34 miles southeast of Nome, Alaska.

The US Coast Guard said on Friday that the 10 people on board the regional airline flight that vanished in Alaska on Thursday have been located and are dead.

According to the USCG, the small commuter plane was discovered Friday approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome.

Three victims were found inside the aircraft by two rescue swimmers, and the remaining seven “are believed to be inside the wreckage,” but they are now inaccessible, USCG Lt. Commander Mike Salerno told CNN.

 

While traveling from Unalakleet to Nome, two cities in western Alaska divided by the Norton Sound inlet, the Bering Air-operated Cessna plane carrying nine passengers and a pilot vanished Thursday afternoon, according to the Alaska State Troopers. The Coast Guard reported that it lost position around 12 miles offshore.

According to Coast Guard Lt. Commander Benjamin McIntyre-Coble, the plane “had some sort of event which caused them to experience a rapid loss in elevation and a rapid loss in speed” about 3:18 p.m. local time on Thursday.

The Coast Guard posted a picture of the plane in a snowy area, shattered into bits. The USCG posted on X, “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident.”

 

According to officials, the missing plane had not used an emergency transmitter to notify its location, which had hindered the hunt for the aircraft.

Authorities have reported that searchers have combed the sea ice offshore and the snowy land in the Nome vicinity. The Coast Guard and US Air Force C-130 personnel conducted preliminary search flights Thursday but were unsuccessful due to poor weather conditions, the Nome Volunteer Fire Department said Friday morning.

In addition to local assistance from the FAA’s aviation safety inspectors, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the agency “is providing an investigator from the Aviation Safety Office of Accident and Prevention.”

 

In a statement posted on X, Duffy stated, “This evening, say a prayer for the ten souls who lost their lives on the Bering Air flight in Alaska.”

During a press briefing on Friday prior to the announcement that a plane had been located, McIntyre-Coble stated that an aircraft involved in the search had discovered “some sort of item of interest” and that the Coast Guard was en route to its location.

Searchers had improved visibility on Friday morning: at around 10 a.m., the sky was clear at Nome Airport, and the temperature was about 5 degrees. According to the fire department, another Coast Guard C-130 landed in Nome to help with the search, and the National Guard and Coast Guard deployed helicopter search teams to the endeavor Friday morning.

 

The fire department stated Friday that all families of the passengers on the missing flight “have been notified,” without providing any details; no names have been made public. These incidents put US air safety under scrutiny.

 

According to the fire department on Friday, the aircraft failed to communicate using an emergency locator transmitter, which can transmit distress signals to aid in locating downed planes.

Each aircraft is equipped with an emergency locater transmitter, a device that, in the event that it comes into contact with seawater, transmits a signal to a satellite, which then notifies the Coast Guard if an aircraft is “in distress,” according to McIntyre-Coble.

“The US Coast Guard has not received any ELT notifications. “We’re not completely clear about why that has happened or why that hasn’t happened,” McIntyre-Coble said.

According to a bureau spokeswoman who talked to CNN, the FBI was providing technical assistance for the search, including efforts to geolocate the passengers’ cell phones. Employees at FBI field offices who have received specialized training in cellular telephone tower data analysis can help investigators determine a device’s last reported position.

 

Around 3:16 p.m., the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, the aircraft that went missing in Alaska, was last spotted over Norton Sound. FlightRadar 24 flight tracking data indicates Thursday. At that time, Nome Airport reported moderate snowfall and temperatures of about 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, the pilot had informed air traffic control that he planned to go into a holding pattern while awaiting clearance of a runway.

 

Conditions at Nome Airport on Thursday night, hours after contact was lost, included freezing drizzle and light snow. Visibility was reduced to half a mile at one point, and nocturnal wind gusts of up to 35 mph were predicted.

CNN aviation analyst Miles O’Brien stated Friday morning that “the aircraft’s performance would degrade, and it could stall and crash if that bad weather coated the wings with ice.” “But searchers should have some hope because there are places where the ice (in the sea below) is actually thick enough to support the craft.”

Because of the weather and safety concerns, first responders advised the public not to organize their own search parties.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District reports that crews responded to the Martinez Refinery Company after receiving a complaint of flaring.

When equipment malfunctions or shuts down, surplus gas is burned, a process known as flaring.

The refinery was on fire, and the fire department was summoned around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday.

A public health advisory has been issued by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office for parts of Pacheco, Martinez, and Clyde.

A shelter-in-place public health advice was issued for residents of the Martinez, Pacheco, and Clyde communities on Saturday afternoon due to a fire breakout that started at the Martinez oil refinery during flaring.

“Please go inside, close all windows and doors, and turn off all heaters, air conditioners, and fans. If not using the fireplace, close fireplace dampers and vents, and cover cracks around doors and windows with tape or damp towels,” the Contra Costa Health advisory sent via the county’s public alert system said.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at around 11:11 a.m., the Emergency Communications Center got a call regarding gunfire at the school on Hobson Pike, according to Don Aaron, a spokesperson for the Metro Nashville Police Department MNPD.

 

Solomon Henderson, a 17-year-old boy who took the bus to school, reportedly approached a 16-year-old girl named Josselin Corea Escalante in the cafeteria with a pistol in his hand. He then fired several shots, killing the girl and another student before shooting himself in the head, according to Metro Police Chief John Drake. Although they weren’t close to the cafeteria, two school resource officers were inside the facility when the incident occurred.

Both the female student, 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante, and the suspect, 17-year-old Solomon Henderson, passed away after the incident; according to MNPD.

 

Another male student was also sent to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt with a facial injury, although that was from a fall during the mayhem rather than a gunshot. A male student also reportedly had a graze wound to the arm, but he was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Drake stated that it was still unclear whether the victims were the intended targets of the shooting, and police did not immediately have a motive. There was an investigation going on. As of Wednesday evening, police stated that they had not established any link between the shooter and the two pupils who were injured, adding that “it may be that they were struck by his random gunfire in the cafeteria.”

 

As part of the inquiry, police reportedly stated that they were “examining very concerning online writings and social media posts” linked to the shooter.

This was a devastating day for Antioch High and the whole Nashville community, according to MNPS Director Dr. Adrienne Battle, a former Antioch High administrator. crowds gathered on Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter.

A white Ford F-150 Lightning automobile is seen on CCTV veering across the pavement to avoid a police cruiser and then colliding with civilians.

The suspect, named as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was “hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” according to police, who also called the incident “very intentional.”

Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick of New Orleans stated, “This man was attempting to run over as many people as he possibly could.”

Two police officers were wounded when Jabbar, who was armed as well, opened fire on them. Then he was shot dead by the cops.

The victims’ names are still being determined, but one is Martin “Tiger” Bech, a former football standout for Princeton University.

The New Orleans suspect was not “solely responsible” for the attack, according to investigators.

Authorities are also investigating whether the attack is connected to the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas the same day.

President Biden was briefed by investigators who said the guy had released recordings showing a “desire to kill.” The incident on Bourbon Street claimed the lives of at least fifteen people.

The suspect was 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen and Army veteran from Texas, according to the FBI.

Before being released from the US Army, Jabbar held positions in IT and human resources, among other areas, according to a since-deleted LinkedIn profile. Between February 2009 and January 2010, he deployed to Afghanistan.

“The meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously, dotting i’s and crossing t’s to make sure that things go off without a hitch” are lessons Jabbar learned during his military service, according to a 2020 YouTube video, according to CBS.

From 2015 to 2017, he attended Georgia State University, earning a computer information system degree.

According to CBS, he had two marriages. His second marriage lasted from 2017 until 2022, while his first dissolved in 2012.

Additionally, he seems to have worked in real estate, as evidenced by his license, which expires in 2021.

Jabbar had a criminal history that included stealing and driving violations.

According to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the suspect “pledged allegiance to ISIS” in multiple videos that were uploaded to his Facebook page the evening before the incident. The videos were directed at his family and showed him driving.

The FBI claims to be looking into the attack as an “act of terrorism” after discovering an Islamic State group flag in the car.
