Crowd Sings ‘From the River to the Sea’ at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Event Promoting Democrats Ahead of Midterms

0

ITHACA, NEW YORK — Progressive politics took center stage at Cornell University as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez addressed a packed audience in upstate New York.

Student activists at the event welcomed the Democratic Socialist congresswoman with chants focused on Palestinian rights as her campaign worked to build enthusiasm for Democrats ahead of the midterm elections Sunday.

Before Ocasio-Cortez’s “Students vs. Billionaires” town hall began, Cornell Young Democratic Socialists of America co-chairs Mina Petrova and Zoe Reisman led approximately 2,000 attendees in chants including “from the river to the sea” and “long live the student intifada.” The event was held at the Ithaca Downtown Conference Center.

“Cornell is fundamentally a capitalist institution that prioritizes billionaires and profit over students and community and is controlled by CEO trustees that are profiting off of genocide and war,” Petrova told the crowd, drawing applause.

Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign organized the gathering with student activist group More Perfect University, describing it as part of an effort to increase Democratic turnout in areas where the party traditionally performs well before the November election.

Ocasio-Cortez, who has been traveling across upstate New York as she raises her national profile amid speculation about a future presidential or US Senate campaign, criticized Cornell over what she described as efforts to restrict student protesters’ free-speech rights.

“Whether it’s the issue about Palestine or many others. Whether it’s about people trying to fire those who are forming a union in their workplace, whether it’s people trying to speak up about a number of different issues, we have to respond to that first crackdown,” she said.

“When we come out in numbers, they cannot take us all,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

The slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” remains highly controversial. The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly characterized it as antisemitic in a 2024 resolution, while critics argue that its reference to the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea implies the elimination of Israel and its people.

Ocasio-Cortez voted against that resolution.

The Bronx-Queens representative became a national political figure after defeating longtime Queens Democratic leader Joe Crowley in the party’s 2018 midterm primary. Earlier Sunday, she had been expected to appear alongside Gov. Kathy Hochul.

A spokesperson for Hochul said the governor canceled the planned Ithaca appearance with Ocasio-Cortez earlier that day.

The governor’s office attributed the decision to the nor’easter affecting New York City, although Hochul had no public events listed for Sunday.

Trump Says He’ll Dine With Anthropic CEO Amid AI Debate

0

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump planned to have a late dinner Sunday with Dario Amodei, CEO of artificial intelligence company Anthropic, despite the executive’s recent clashes with the administration over the military’s use of AI.

Trump told reporters after returning to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland that he would meet Amodei for dinner at 10 p.m. The gathering came two days after Anthropic suffered a legal setback in its challenge to the government’s decision to bar its products from Defense Department work.

The confrontation between Anthropic and the Pentagon began in February, when Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused the company of posing a national security threat and classified it as a supply chain risk. Amodei had resisted pressure to change course, citing concerns that Anthropic’s technology could be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.

On Friday, a federal appeals court rejected Anthropic’s challenge to the government’s designation. The ruling permits the Pentagon to continue removing the company’s Claude AI models from its systems.

Trump has strongly promoted artificial intelligence and frequently says the United States must stay ahead of China in the technology race. Amodei, however, said earlier this month that the industry should slow its rapid development long enough for safety protections to keep pace. Without a pause, he warned, AI could within six to 12 months become capable of directing a swarm of agents able to seize control of the entire internet.

His comments reflect growing concern both within the technology sector and among the broader public about increasingly powerful AI systems. Although these tools can solve problems beyond human capabilities, critics fear they could malfunction, act independently or be used for damaging purposes. Those concerns have also influenced OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Its CEO told Fortune that the company plans to wait until next year before selling stock to Wall Street investors while it concentrates on safety.

Lanterns Episode 7 Recap: The Road to Hal Jordan Is Paved With Good Intentions

0

Writers working in nerd franchises who want to process their daddy issues on screen: please stop. Seriously. How many times has Damon Lindelof, co-creator of HBO’s Lanterns and co-writer of this episode alongside fellow co-creator Tom King, returned to this particular well? Lost did it. The Leftovers did it. Didn’t he saddle Captain Kirk with father issues in Star Trek, too? Star Wars, Superman, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are foundational texts in this tradition, which has spread across film, television, and comics. Superhero stories are especially vulnerable: This 90-year-old genre keeps generating new material partly by obsessing over LEGACY and the passing of heroism from one generation to the next.

In other words, men would apparently rather write lifeless cold-open flashbacks about intimidating, emotionally distant mustache dads who brawl with Little League coaches and inspire a desperate need for approval than go to therapy.

And even apart from the father-son material, the sequence is painfully obvious. Hal is thrown off his baseball team after refusing to give up the ball during a no-hitter, apparently holding on to it even as the entire team fights him for it. After his father, the rough-edged test pilot Martin Jordan (Jake B. Miller), dies, young Hal (Henry Samiri) searches through the field where Martin made him throw the ball and retrieves it. Adult Hal and the power ring: Do you see the connection? Do you???

Then Martin delivers a speech about a failsafe he has prepared in case something goes wrong, entrusting the key to young Hal. It is the same idea as adult Hal’s cosmic-cube vault in the storage shed. Do you see that one, too? Do you???

This sort of writing may have seemed fresh and inventive 20 years ago, when Lost helped bring it into the mainstream. But in a series like Lanterns, whose appeal depends so heavily on its likable leads and their lived-in, naturalistic performances, piling on a blunt, overdetermined origin story feels like cutting those characters off at the knees.

Lanterns is therefore 0 for 2 with its flashbacks about the hidden histories of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Fortunately, the show’s present-day storyline remains largely untouched by that problem. Once it moves away from the past, it focuses on exactly what it should: Aaron Pierre’s John, Kyle Chandler’s Hal, and Kelly Macdonald’s Sheriff Kerry trying to establish an uneasy new relationship.

Halogram behind Kerry in 'Lanterns' 107

The complication is that this Hal is neither Kerry’s Hal nor John’s Hal. He is the version preserved by the ring — the Hal last backed up around 2006. The show’s constantly shifting timelines, combined with its limited use of distinctive costumes or aging makeup beyond John’s 2026 goatee, can make it difficult to know when any given character is meant to be from. This Hal is kinder and more cooperative, but he is also understandably devastated to discover that he has been murdered. Learning how badly he damaged his reputation hits him just as hard.

He can also sincerely praise John’s accomplishments, something the original Hal never literally did. That praise disarms John. Though the two continue to argue, John calls the construct “Hal” by the episode’s end — a name he never used while Jordan was alive. Pierre and Chandler make these exchanges land by keeping their reactions understated while making it clear that John and Hal, rather than the actors Aaron and Kyle, are the ones trying not to show how deeply affected they are. Their reluctance to reveal their emotions becomes emotional in itself.

The same is true of Hal’s meeting with Kerry, whom he catches off guard with the brashness that has always defined him. It is a remarkable little scene. This version of Hal seems never to have been in love and wants to meet the woman he eventually trusted enough to open up to, including about his father. Kerry, meanwhile, is looking at a dead man while also encountering a side of him she never knew. It feels almost like magic unfolding in front of her. In less capable hands, this would be a mildly confusing time-travel story from a forgettable comic. With Chandler, Macdonald, and Pierre guiding it, the scene rises above its familiar science-fiction machinery and finds the human — or, in Hal’s case, human-adjacent — emotion at its center.

Sheriff Kerry is occupied with a party for her son Noah, whose major decision about which college will get him as a quarterback is to wait until after he wins the season’s final high school game. That leaves her on the sidelines while John and Hal enter the vault. Inside, they discover a gun, a poncho, and a huge mass of black goo that proves to be a wormhole or portal connected directly to another location somewhere in the universe.

When the two heroes pass through, they arrive on the planet Zoe the Manhunter devastated, prompting survivor Antaan to pursue revenge. The muted color palette is a letdown — this is superhero space opera, so why not make it as vivid as possible? Still, the drained look fits the devastation. A ruined city hangs in the sky above them, while the baked desert is strewn with the bodies of people who leaped to their deaths after the Manhunter released a fear gas that drove them mad. The gas remains in the atmosphere, becoming especially dangerous when it rains. At one point, John nearly kills himself while hallucinating his father and his younger self. Hal’s duplicate grumbles that this is precisely why the older Hal insisted they bring the damn poncho.

Photo: HBO

The pair discover a boat abandoned by older Hal and use it to cross a lake toward a distant island made of debris, where a blue-green light flickers above the wreckage. Along the way, Hal finally discusses his family. His father’s fatal crash was actually a suicide, something Hal knows because the failsafe Martin mentioned contained a suicide note — a secret Hal spent his life concealing. Martin’s own father also died by suicide, creating a legacy of lethal depression that reaches far enough back to earn the name Jordan Boys Legacy. See what I mean? See??? This raises the possibility that Hal himself died by suicide, with Kerry hiding the truth to preserve his legacy.

But the biggest discovery on the garbage island is Sinestro. The escaped convict attempts to ambush the two quasi-Lanterns, only for John to drop him with a single punch and expose who he is.

Sinestro in 'Lanterns' 107

Photo: HBO

“Great arm, kid,” Hal tells John, echoing the words his own father once said to him. Come on. Come on!!!

Put the flashbacks and the Father’s Day Hallmark-card material aside, and I’ll sound like a broken record: Lanterns thrives because of its leads. All three are attractive and charismatic, yet all three — even the genuinely godlike John — feel like people who would be interesting to have a beer with. Not necessarily fun, but memorable, and the kind of company you would be glad to keep. They are appealing despite being, let’s be honest, three deeply strange and compromised people. They are the gold amid all that green.

Trouble in Paradise for Aussie Who Killed and Ate a Puppy

0

The second marriage of an Australian man filmed beating a puppy to death and eating it during a traditional wedding ceremony in Indonesia may already be under strain.

Robby Wirramanda, 53, whose real name is Robert Knight and who is a convicted drug dealer, provoked widespread outrage this month after the black puppy was killed on the Indonesian island of West Nusa Tenggara, east of Bali.

In footage recorded during his wedding to 20-year-old local bride Rensi Ana, the dog can be heard whimpering as its hind legs are tied to prevent it escaping. Wirramanda is then seen striking the animal with a stick until it dies.

Ana initially shared the video on Facebook. The footage also appeared to show Wirramanda killing a piglet with a knife. The post was later removed as criticism intensified.

Wirramanda has since uploaded videos showing him being baptised ahead of a second wedding ceremony, styled in a more Western fashion, in which his bride wore a lacy white dress.

However, a series of tense videos featuring the couple arguing and trading barbs has fueled speculation that the relationship is already facing difficulties.

The clips also show Wirramanda handling other puppies, including one that appeared strikingly similar to the animal killed during the earlier ceremony.

In one video, he pets a golden labradoodle-type dog while Ana adds a disturbing caption: ‘People who eat animals for breakfast should also have breakfast hehe.’

The latest footage has prompted a warning from animal protection group Bali Dogs and other online commentators. One message read: ‘He is playing with it to gain its trust… then will kill it the same way.’

Another commenter wrote: ‘You shouldn’t be allowed near any animals.’

Only weeks after the couple’s second wedding—and shortly after Wirramanda was baptised—their relationship appears to be showing signs of tension.

Ana has appeared to clash with her husband in one of several videos recently posted to Facebook as she capitalises on the attention surrounding the couple.

Wearing a crisp white shirt, Ana tells Wirramanda to move away while she poses for her phone and explains that she is filming herself eating.

Wirramanda responds in an increasingly frustrated tone, repeatedly asking: ‘Is there anything you want me to put in the bag? How many times do you want me to ask you?’

When Ana ignores him and gestures toward her phone camera again, he exclaims: ‘Oh my God!’

He then appears to grab the phone from her hand in an aggressive manner before the recording cuts out.

Wirramanda, from Mildura in Victoria, was jailed for six and a half years in 2012 over an amphetamine trafficking operation he ran from his Melbourne gym.

He broke his silence after the puppy dog video went viral to deny slurs made by online trolls.

‘An extraordinary amount of false, defamatory and deeply disturbing information has been circulated about me across social media,’ he posted.

‘A significant amount of this material appears to be coming from, or being amplified by members and associates of my former partner’s family.

‘But there is an enormous difference between discussing someone’s documented past and inventing accusations of murder, rape, paedophilia, child trafficking and other serious crimes.’

He said he would report any further comments ‘to the appropriate authorities’.

However he continues to come under fire for the puppy-killing videos, although some locals have leapt to his defence.

‘Back when I was in junior high, I absolutely loved eating dog meat,’ said one user, posting in the local Indonesian Bahasa language.

‘I don’t eat it anymore because I’m an animal lover. That said, I still acknowledge the tradition in Sumba; my family does eat it, but we don’t kill dogs that guard the house.’

Former NRL Star Whose Career Was Ended by Horror Injury Offers Nathan Cleary Hope

0

Former Brisbane Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh has offered Nathan Cleary a message of hope after the Penrith Panthers halfback suffered a serious ankle injury.

Cleary sustained a compound fracture to his left ankle during a hip-drop tackle from Newcastle’s Phoenix Crossland in Sunday’s 22-14 preliminary final loss.

The Panthers star had already been battling a broken right foot and is expected to undergo multiple surgeries, leaving NRL supporters anxiously awaiting further news about his recovery.

Yow Yeh knows the long-term impact of a major ankle injury better than most. He suffered a catastrophic injury against South Sydney in Perth in 2012, endured 10 operations and almost two years of rehabilitation before his career was brought to an early end at just 24.

However, speaking to Daily Mail, the former Queensland and Australian winger said the distressing similarities between the two incidents did not mean Cleary would necessarily face the same outcome.

‘I actually don’t think it’ll be as bad as what a lot of people think,’ Yow Yeh said.

Yow Yeh delivered a heartfelt message of hope to Nathan Cleary following the Panthers star’s serious ankle injury

Yow Yeh stressed that his optimism came with a caveat: he did not yet know the full extent of Cleary’s injuries.

Sunday night’s incident also revived painful memories of the injury that cut short Yow Yeh’s promising career.

‘I just feel so bad for him,’ he said.

‘I know that feeling. I know where he’s at when you’re sitting there and you’re just helpless.

‘You never think that that’s gonna happen to you. I can guarantee you I never thought in my life that I would ever do something like that.’

He also warned against making a direct comparison, pointing out that an ankle dislocation was a major element of his own injury.

‘Mine was a dislocation of my ankle joint,’ he said.

‘So I think a lot of people are trying to throw similarities. I’m not sure if he’s done that.’

Cleary had also been managing a stress fracture in his opposite foot before the preliminary final

Cleary had also been dealing with a stress fracture in his opposite foot before the preliminary final

Yow Yeh said the exact fracture and the extent of any additional damage would be critical in determining Cleary’s recovery, while acknowledging the added risks when a broken bone breaks through the skin.

‘I think the complication part is because it has pierced skin, there is a chance there where you can get an infection,’ he said.

Yow Yeh raised the question of how Cleary would feel when he eventually returned to the demands of professional football.

‘It’s just whether you’ll have pain, I suppose, when he comes back, because we’ve gotta remember you’re holding your body weight on your ankles, your legs,’ he said.

‘Keep in mind, I wasn’t a kicker. I didn’t kick the ball a lot like him. I didn’t kick the goals. He’s still a very healthy young man.’

Physiotherapist Brien Seeney, who provides injury analysis under the NRL Physio name, also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding an open fracture.

In his initial assessment on X, Seeney said the usual recovery range for ankle fractures and dislocations was three to four months, but warned Cleary’s situation could be more complicated.

‘The open nature of the injury increases the uncertainty here and it might not be so clear cut,’ Seeney wrote.

Should harsher penalties be imposed for dangerous tackles that cause serious injuries like Cleary’s?

He explained that an open wound greatly increased infection risk and would require a washout during surgery to reduce that risk.

Yow Yeh believed Cleary’s access to the club’s trusted medical specialists in Sydney was a reason for encouragement.

‘He’s got everyone that the club would trust in the vicinity,’ he said.

‘I’ve got no doubt that the club doctor or the surgeon would have been called immediately.

‘We’re talking about the best player in the world, right? Like, arguably best player in the world.’

He expected there would be no shortage of specialists willing to help the Panthers halfback.

‘I can guarantee you there’s that many surgeons putting their hands up to be inside that room to help,’ he said.

Taylor Swift Dedicates 2026 VMAs Award to Country Icon Dolly Parton

0

Taylor Swift claimed the MTV VMAs 2026’s top prize and used her record-setting moment to honor country icon Dolly Parton. The victory made Swift the most awarded artist in the ceremony’s history, with 32 trophies.

The 36-year-old superstar won the coveted Video of the Year Moon Person for The Fate of Ophelia, dedicating the honor to the legendary musician.

“I want to dedicate this award to one person, without whom this wouldn’t be happening—and that person is the ultimate showgirl, Dolly Parton,” Swift said.

Her “ultimate showgirl” reference pointed to her hit album The Life of a Showgirl, whose new deluxe edition was released Friday. Swift’s Video of the Year nod was her only nomination of the night.

Swift continued to praise Parton’s artistry, saying: “Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich.”

“Listening to her songs, it’s like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she has written.”

Parton died at the age of 80 on August 25 following a brief battle with undisclosed cancer.

Continuing her acceptance speech, Swift said Parton approached her life and career with “grace, and joy, and love, and gratitude” for the opportunity to do what she did.

“Everything that happened in her life or her career, she channeled back into love, and gratitude, and appreciation for her fans,” Swift added. “I’m lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them.”

The Style singer closed with a heartfelt tribute: “I think we were all very, very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.”

Swift’s historic night had already begun when she accepted the inaugural Artist Director Honors, presented by her friend Dakota Johnson.

The achievement ended her tie with Beyoncé, 45, for the most MTV VMAs victories. Both artists arrived at Sunday’s ceremony with 30 awards each.

Because Beyoncé had no nominations this year, Swift emerged as the event’s sole record-holder.

Accepting the honor, Swift explained why music video-making remains so meaningful to her: “The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun.”

Woman Recalls Chilling Encounter With Pornographer R.C. Horsch at Philadelphia House Linked to Seven Missing Women

0

A woman has recalled a terrifying encounter with notorious pornographer Raymond “R.C.” Horsch and his felon son, Eugene, more than a decade ago inside their Philadelphia home, which authorities have since linked to several missing and unidentified women.

The woman said she met the father and son during a difficult period in 2012, when she was homeless and struggling with drug use. She immediately recognized them when reports emerged about the Olney property that detectives have connected to seven missing or unidentified women, WPVI reported.

“When I saw this story break, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I know who that is,’” said the woman, who has not been identified.

She met the pair in Camden, New Jersey, and accompanied them to their Philadelphia home. After using drugs, she said she blacked out and later woke in terror to find R.C. Horsch — the author of a disturbing book titled “Memoir of an Empathetic Serial Killer” — standing over her and taking photographs.

“I was terrified. I thought he was going to — him and his son Eugene — I thought they were going to kill me,” she said.

She managed to escape from the residence on Chew Avenue, but said the ordeal continued weeks later when Eugene allegedly threatened her in Camden.

“Eugene was like, ‘You know I can kill you right and nobody would ever find you,’” she recalled.

Now sober for a decade, the woman said others in the area used to warn one another about a man known by his distinctive eye patch.

“We would say, ‘The one-eyed guy, don’t go with him.’ Girls would go missing; we’d be like, ‘Do you think it’s him or the other guy?’”

In 2009, R.C. Horsch was arrested after allegedly attempting to abduct a 9-year-old girl. Investigators later found an eye patch, binoculars, camera equipment and a condom inside his vehicle.

The woman has since spoken with Philadelphia detectives and learned that images of her were among more than 1 million files recovered from the house, including material authorities described as snuff movies.

“They were interested in what Eugene said when he threatened me, and whether I thought other girls had been out there,” she said. “I spoke to one girl’s mom, Gabby’s mom,” referring to Gabrielle Amarando’s mother.

She said she also gave investigators the names of women she fears may be missing and could be connected to the case. The investigation began in June after authorities discovered a disturbing scene inside the property, including dangerous chemicals, weapons and writings that referenced serial killers.

“A lot of us are afraid to come forward, but I’m only doing it so the other girls have a chance of getting some type of justice from this,” she said.

Authorities have said they found images and video of two women — Maribel Frieses, who was last seen in 2018, and Amarando, who was last seen in 2012 — that appeared to depict them after their deaths.

Blair Tonzelli, who disappeared in 2023, and Amy McHale, Horsch’s former wife who was last seen in 2016, have also been identified by authorities in connection with the investigation.

McHale’s family said the last known location for her was the Philadelphia home where Horsch and his son lived.

“Something happened to her in that house,” McHale’s mother, Gloria, said.

R.C. Horsch died last year. Investigators believe his remains may be among five urns recovered from the dilapidated brick house.

Eugene Horsch remains in custody on firearms charges as authorities continue investigating the missing and unidentified women linked to the property.

Sylvester Stallone Opens Up About Bulimia and Steroid Use During Rocky III Era

Sylvester Stallone is speaking publicly for the first time about his past struggle with bulimia.

While developing Rocky Balboa, the iconic boxer at the center of his film franchise, Stallone said he imagined the character as more than simply muscular. “I looked at Rocky [like he was a] very smooth, very normal-looking guy. And then I said, ‘I think the character would start to become a bit more vain,’” Stallone, 80, told The New York Times in an interview published Saturday, September 26. He wanted Rocky’s physique to resemble “a jaguar, a cat” — lean, agile and aggressive rather than oversized like Arnold [Schwarzenegger].

That pursuit of a specific look eventually became consuming. “Then, it became an obsession. Really bad. It got to the point where I became bulimic. You heard it here first,” Stallone said.

The actor, who portrayed the title character throughout the Rocky series, said he came to view his physique as a form of “armor.”

Sylvester Stallone is also revisiting a teenage stay at a mental institution. “In my age group, the teenagers, if you ever snuck out to see a girl or do something like that, you’d be reprimanded by being taken to a place called Park Lodge or the Snake Pit,” Stallone, 80, told The New York Times.

During the production of Rocky III, Stallone said he reduced his body fat to 2.6 percent and struggled to keep food down. “I couldn’t hold anything down — or I didn’t want to keep it down because I became so obsessed with staying at that point of fitness,” the action star recalled. He described the behavior as an off-camera extension of his “obsessive body-worship” and argued that reaching such a physique required more than diet and exercise. “Nobody does it without additives and drugs, period. I don’t care what they say.”

Stallone also acknowledged using steroids to help preserve his heavily trained build.

“It isn’t as though you’re a junkie, but if you’re going to work out and try to stay in shape for six months straight, and you’re eating yogurt and pudding, it’s not happening,” he said. Stallone described using steroids in cycles — “six weeks on, six weeks off” — while conceding that the approach came with serious consequences. “People go, ‘Oh, you don’t get that way naturally.’ No, you don’t, but that also took a terrible toll.”

His perspective began to change after he took on the role of an out-of-shape, vulnerable sheriff in the 1997 film Cop Land.

“It wasn’t until I did Cop Land, when I had to play the weakest guy in the room — partially deaf, overweight — that I felt somewhat liberated,” Stallone told the outlet. By then, he said, years of physically demanding work had taken a major toll. “Yeah, I’ve abused my body. I’ve had nine back operations, two shoulder operations, three neck fusions. Everything is held together with baling wire, but I still want to stay in good shape.”

Sylvester Stallone Calls Himself a Coward for Jennifer Flavin Breakup

Ethan Miller/Getty Images The actor known for playing Rambo has called himself a coward over the way he once ended his relationship with wife Jennifer Flavin. Stallone met Flavin, 56, in 1988, and they dated for six years before he, then 78, sent her a breakup letter through FedEx. The couple later reunited.

As Stallone approached his 80th birthday in July, he said he had stopped treating his body like armor.

“I’m sort of fit, but I take a lot of pills to keep going. It’s come at a terrible price,” he said. Looking back, Stallone added, “If I could do it over again, I would say, ‘Let someone else carry the banner and don’t do your own stunts.’ I don’t know what it was about hurting myself all the time.”

Killer Leaves Disturbing Calling Card in Multi-State Murder Spree

0

Confessed serial killer Gary Ray Bowles moved from state to state in search of victims, leaving behind a chilling detail that would eventually connect his crimes.

After murdering people, Bowles frequently forced leaves, dirt or other objects into their mouths. A forensic psychologist said the disturbing act may have been intended to humiliate his victims while reinforcing his sense of power over them.

“The stuffing of the objects into the victim’s mouth could have some symbolic meaning,” Dr. Kerry Bogardus said on Oxygen’s Unknown Serial Killers of America. “It certainly could act as a symbol of the dehumanization of a victim. To humiliate them, to say to them, ‘I am more powerful than you.’”

Bowles often preyed on gay men who had offered him help or companionship. He would kill them, take their vehicles and use the stolen cars to travel to another state, where he searched for his next target.

Martin Bradley, the nephew of one of Bowles’ victims, summed up the brutality simply: “He’s the definition of evil.”

Victim Milton Bradley Found on Golf Course

The investigation into Bowles’ crimes began in Savannah, Georgia, on May 4, 1994, when the body of Martin’s 72-year-old uncle, Milton Bradley, was found at a golf club.

Milton had been missing for five days when authorities discovered him lying on his back. Leaves, twigs and soil had been packed into his mouth, and investigators determined that he had been beaten and manually strangled.

Milton was widely known in Savannah as a gentle and welcoming man whose kindness had made him a familiar presence in the community.

“Uncle Milton was a World War II veteran,” Martin said. “He sacrificed for the country, had shell shock. Medically, they did bad things back then. They lobotomized him.”

Following the procedure, Milton’s relatives continued to care for him. They eventually employed him at the family’s key and locksmith shop.

The autopsy revealed a fractured nose and defensive injuries, indicating that Milton had struggled against his attacker before he died.

His wallet, which normally contained money and credit cards, was gone. Investigators also found a palm print on a nearby storage shed that could have belonged to the killer.

Investigators Learn Telling Clues About Milton Bradley’s Attacker

Witnesses said Milton had last been seen on April 29 at Faces, a gay bar, leaving with a man believed to be about 30 years old. The man had dark hair, a mustache and a tattoo on his bicep.

Identifying him proved difficult because he had reportedly used several different names. Surveillance footage later showed a man using Milton’s credit card at a gas station, but the poor-quality video was not clear enough to establish his identity.

Detectives also learned that the suspect appeared to be surviving by working as a male prostitute.

“There’s something called a hustler, which is a straight male, who receives oral sex from a gay man in exchange for money,” former FBI Special Agent Dennis Regan explained. “And we start to get the understanding that this person is a drifter and hustler.”

Authorities Link I-95 Killer to Other Crimes Along Interstate

Seeking a broader lead, Savannah police contacted the FBI to determine whether similar killings had occurred elsewhere in the country.

Agents soon found a possible connection. On April 13, 1994—just weeks before Milton vanished—the body of David Jarman had been discovered inside his home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Jarman, a respected loan officer who frequently visited gay clubs, had been strangled and robbed of his credit card and car. Detectives also found a sex toy lodged in his throat.

Jarman’s last known sighting was at a gay bar, where he had been seen with a younger man who fit the same general description provided by witnesses in Milton Bradley’s case.

The FBI was also able to link the crime spree to the March 14 murder of John Roberts in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“John Roberts was discovered by a friend who did a wellness check and saw that Mr. Roberts was lying in a pool of blood in his living room,” Regan said. “The police come to investigate, they see that it’s a messy crime scene. There’s an overturned table, there’s broken glass, food everywhere. They see that there’s blunt force trauma to Mr. Roberts’ head, manual strangulation and he’s gagged with a white cloth that is put down his throat.”

After the killing, the suspect—dubbed the I-95 killer—stole Roberts’ car then took the interstate north before abandoning the vehicle in Nashville, Tenn.

“He would move up and down the I-95 interstate,” Bogardus  explained, “commit a crime, pick up a car, take it to the next state.”

Suspect Identified as Drifter Gary Ray Bowles

Investigators caught a break in identifying their killer after finding a probation report in Roberts’ home with the name Gary Ray Bowles, a man from Kentucky with a troubled past.

Bowles’ handprint in the system also matched to the one left behind at Milton’s crime scene, authorities said.

“There’s very little doubt in our mind that Gary Ray Bowles was the killer of Milton Bradley, David Jarman and John Roberts,” Regan said. “This serial murderer is on the loose and we need to find him.”

Investigators believed that Bowles operated by targeting the kindest guy in the room at a club in an attempt to get invited back their home, then killed and robbed his victims.

His violent ways began early in life after beating his stepfather with a rock at the age of 14. After fleeing home, Bowles began hitchhiking.

“The first person who picks him up gives Bowles oral sex,” Bogardus said, “pays him for it, and says ‘This is how you can make money.’”

Though straight, Bowles—who had a criminal record for aggravated battery, prostitution and drug-related offenses— began hustling to support himself, Regan said, adding “This is easy money to him.”

Not long after Milton’s murder, the body of 37-year-old Albert “Alcie” Morris was found May 19 inside his Hilliard, Florida home.

“It’s a chaotic scene in the house where they are stabbing each other, hitting each other and someone shot Alcie Morris to death with one shot to the chest,” Regan said. “There is manual strangulation. The perpetrator has taken a blood soaked towel and placed it in the mouth and throat of Alcie Morris.”

Investigators said Bowles fingerprints were found at the scene.

Gary Ray Bowles Strikes Again in Florida

With investigators fearing that Bowles could strike again, they flooded the media and gay bars throughout the country with his pictures and information about his crimes, but months went by without any new leads.

Then, in November of 1994, investigators learned that another body had been discovered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jay Hinton had been violently killed inside his mobile home. According to investigators, Bowles had grabbed a concrete stepping stone from outside the house as Hinton slept and dropped it onto his head.

“The autopsy on Jay Hinton revealed that he also had injuries to a rib cage,” former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Det. Joe Collins recalled. “There was indication there was a fight.”

Hinton was strangled and had a rag stuffed down his throat.

As former Florida Assistant State Attorney Bernie De La Rionda explained, “It was as egregious, as heinous, as atrocious a murder as you can have.”

How Was Gary Ray Bowles Caught?

Detectives learned that before his death, Hinton had given man he believed was named Timothy Whitfield a place to stay.

Authorities learned that Bowles had been using the alias to avoid detection. They were able to track Bowles to his job in Jacksonville, where he was working under the name Timothy Whitfield and he was arrested. Though he initially claimed to be Whitfield, he eventually confessed to his real identity and the six murders.

“He used gay men to get food, shelter and comfort,” Collins explained. “They bring him in as a roommate. Everything was fine until it was time to move on. In his words, he didn’t kill everybody he met. It was only a few, unfortunately, that triggered him to murder.”

Bowles was convicted of Hinton’s murder in 1996 and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection in Florida in 2019.
