Usha Vance, the Second Lady, recently shared a key piece of advice she offered to her husband, Vice President JD Vance, shedding light on her supportive role amidst the intense pressures of political life.

In an interview with Rachel Campos-Duffy on Fox News, Usha revealed that her most valuable counsel to JD was to disconnect from social media, even if just briefly.

‘I advised him to consider taking a short break from social media,’ she shared.

She further elaborated that the ceaseless influx of information can quickly become overwhelming, especially for a figure entrenched in the heart of American political dynamics.

‘The never-ending barrage can be utterly draining,’ Usha remarked, noting that JD did step away during Lent.

According to Usha, the experience allowed her husband to consume information less constantly and instead take it in ‘bursts’ or in more aggregated ways.

And she believes it made a difference.

‘I personally think it helped him have some perspective about various things that he was thinking about,’ she said.

Vance has developed a reputation for being unusually active on X, turning the platform into an extension of his political persona.

In early 2025, the Vice President was described as having an ‘X habit’, regularly posting, wading into arguments and weighing in on everything from politics and foreign policy to culture.

Unlike many politicians, Vance was often said to write the posts himself rather than leaving his social-media presence entirely to communications staff.

His approach is distinctly combative.

Vance has used X to take aim at opponents, spar with critics and speak directly to his supporters, cultivating the image of a politician who prefers to mix it with ordinary users rather than simply broadcasting carefully scripted messages.

And he knew he was spending a lot of time on the site.

In April 2025, Vance admitted he was probably spending ‘way less time on Twitter’ than he had six months earlier — a remark that suggested he was already aware his scrolling had become something of a habit.

That makes his decision to step away from X during Lent all the more revealing.

Vance told NBC News deleting the app from his phone made him more productive because he was no longer automatically reaching for it whenever he had a spare few minutes.

Instead of being sucked into endless scrolling, he said, he could read.

But giving up X also came at a cost.

Vance said he missed the ‘direct interaction’ the platform provided. With Secret Service protection surrounding him, he said he can find himself living in something of a bubble — insulated from the unfiltered opinions and reactions he might otherwise encounter.

Usha was also pressed about speculation surrounding her husband’s potential political future.

Asked about the possibility of JD Vance seeking the presidency in 2028, Usha did not rule it out — but stressed that the family is not making plans for a White House bid just yet.

‘Right now, that step is he’s really focused on the midterms,’ she said.

She also said she was keeping an ‘open mind and open heart’ about whatever might come next for the family, even as most political observers expect Vance to launch his candidacy after the 2026 midterms. 

‘Whatever it is that he feels is the right thing for him to do, we’re going to have a good time doing it,’ she said.

But perhaps the most personal moment of the interview came when Usha was asked about comments made by Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

El-Sayed had posted: ‘So do we think JD is taking Usha with him back in time to meet Papaw, or no…’

The remark was widely interpreted as a reference to Usha’s Indian heritage and a suggestion that JD’s late grandfather might not have accepted her.

Usha’s response was notably restrained.

‘I have to admit, I kind of laughed,’ she said.

She pointed out that she never met JD’s grandparents, James and Bonnie Vance, but said she knows the family they raised.

‘His mom, his aunt and uncle,’ she said, describing them as having been ‘nothing but incredibly loving.’

Usha went on to describe JD’s aunt as ‘like a second mother to me.’

‘And so I have to think that if they raised children like that, they would have been loving as well,’ she said, adding that she would have ‘really, really, really loved to have met’ her husband’s grandparents.

The comments also carry an added poignancy given something JD himself wrote a decade ago.

In his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, Vance described it as one of the ‘great regrets’ of his life that his grandparents never had the opportunity to meet Usha.

Recently released 911 calls provide new insights into the tragic shooting that unfolded at Seattle’s renowned Bite of Seattle festival. These recordings reveal the dramatic efforts of emergency responders as they hurried to assist multiple victims at the scene.

One distressed caller, who reported being shot in the back, could be heard urgently telling the dispatcher, “I’m losing blood.”

The individual on the line admitted uncertainty about the identity of the shooter.

The caller continued, “I don’t know who did it. I took cover. I see the officers down here,” emphasizing their lack of clarity amidst the chaos.

The dispatcher tried to keep the wounded person calm as help was sent toward the water fountain where the caller was believed to be waiting.

“It’s okay. Just breathe. Breathe with me. I’m going to stay with you,” the dispatcher said.

Moments later, the caller said they were with an officer.

Other emergency transmissions capture dispatchers and first responders working to assess the scope of the unfolding violence near the Seattle Center Armory.

“Multiple people down at this point,” one dispatcher said when asked whether anyone had been shot.

As reports continued to come in, another dispatcher requested “as many aid units as possible,” saying there were at least two people down — “but more than that.”

Emergency crews initially treated the area as an active scene while officials worked to determine whether it was safe for responders to enter.

“Let’s treat that as an active scene for now,” a dispatcher said.

A dispatcher later said there were “six confirmed gunshot wounds” amid the chaotic response.

The calls come as Seattle police have offered few public updates on the investigation.

Fox 13 Seattle reported that interim Police Chief Andre Sayles said earlier this month that investigators had developed new information and expected to make an arrest, but he declined to disclose details.

“I think the biggest thing is, you know, it’s going to cause a little bit of frustration, is the integrity of this investigation,” Sayles said Aug. 7, according to the outlet. “There’s some information that we have. I want to make sure that we keep the integrity of that investigation close to the vest until we can make the appropriate arrest.”

A 15-year-old suspect remains in custody in connection with the shooting.

The Mayor’s Office said in a statement to the outlet that the administration “continues to work closely with the Seattle Police Department to ensure information about critical events reach the public.”

The shooting erupted last month outside the Seattle Center Armory during the Bite of Seattle food festival, near the Space Needle. Three people were killed and four others were wounded, including a 2-year-old boy, authorities previously said.

The dead included a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man who were pronounced dead at the scene. A 56-year-old woman later died after she was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Wilson called the shooting “an act of horrific violence.”

“Impacted families are living through the worst moment of their lives, and an entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire,” Wilson said at the time.

“No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city,” she added.

Wilson said officials believed a 15-year-old had opened fire into the crowd, though details remained under investigation. The teen was booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of firearms violations and first-degree assault. No homicide charges had been filed as of the most recent update.

Former Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said investigators believed gunfire was exchanged outside the Armory after a conflict involving small groups believed to be at odds with one another, leaving bystanders caught in the crossfire.

Investigators initially believed two gunmen were involved. But a juvenile-court document later indicated the detained teen and an acquaintance who was found dead at the scene may have exchanged gunfire with at least one other, unidentified suspect.
