Andy Burnham Insists UK-US Special Relationship Remains Strong

0

Andy Burnham has declared that he trusts Donald Trump as he prepares for high-stakes discussions with the US President.

The Prime Minister has previously labelled Mr Trump’s political approach “poisonous” and argued that politicians who worked with him should feel “ashamed”.

However, in a significant change of tone, Mr Burnham said he now regarded the outspoken President as a trusted ally.

Speaking to journalists during his flight to New York on Monday evening, he said the UK’s special relationship with the US was “as strong as it’s ever been”. He added: “When you come into this job, you realise how deep this relationship is.”

Asked directly whether he trusted Mr Trump, the Prime Minister replied: “Yes, of course, you know, we trust, we trust our allies. Of course, we do.”

When pressed on whether that confidence extended to Mr Trump personally, he answered simply: “Yes.”

The conciliatory message came shortly before the Prime Minister’s first in-person meeting with Mr Trump.

The two leaders are due to meet for talks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mr Trump previously referred to the Prime Minister as “the mayor of some town” and said his predecessor Sir Keir Starmer was “no Winston Churchill”

Mr Burnham played down the pair’s previous exchanges, including Mr Trump’s description of him as “the mayor of some town”.

“Politicians say things throughout their careers, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in,” he said. Recalling their first phone conversation, he added: “I did say to the President in our first phone call – I said, Mr President, Manchester isn’t ‘some town’. I said, this is Manchester. And so yes, the right thing to do is to have a laugh about it, isn’t it, and move beyond it.”

During the meeting, the Prime Minister will urge Mr Trump to remain committed to Britain and Europe as the world faces what he described as “dark clouds of global instability”.

He is expected to call on the US President to stand alongside Nato in response to increasing Russian provocation.

Mr Burnham will also press him to recognise the risks posed by artificial intelligence, just days after Mr Trump dismissed the issue as a “hoax”.

He is also scheduled to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as part of efforts to revive Labour’s troubled reset with the European Union.

Several contentious issues are expected to feature in the discussions, including Mr Trump’s opposition to Labour’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and his recent lack of clarity over US backing for British sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

Mr Burnham said he would seek to convince Mr Trump to reconsider his public opposition to the controversial Chagos Islands agreement.

He said he had reassured his Mauritian counterpart during a phone call that Britain remained “determined to secure the long term operation of the base, which is crucial to our security and that of our allies”.

“The assurance I gave was I will work towards a resolution,” he said. “At the moment we don’t have that, but I gave an assurance that I would commit to working towards one.”

The PM’s official spokesman said he would use the trip to forge links with world leaders ‘to brighten a darkening global picture’.

The PM will warn Mr Trump that safety concerns about AI cannot be ignored in the rush to harness huge potential benefits.

He is expected to ask Mr Trump to ensure that US-based tech firms submit their latest AI models for testing by the UK’s AI safety Institute.

And he will urge Mr Trump to co-operate with other world leaders in ensuring that AI does not become a threat to humanity.

Speaking ahead of his visit to the US, he said international cooperation was needed to make sure ‘rapidly changing technology is harnessed for good to make our countries safer and stronger’.

Mr Burnham is due to be accompanied by his wife Marie-France van Heel on his visit to New York.

He is due to hold face-to-face talks with President Trump at the UN before delivering a speech focused on the challenges and opportunities posed by AI in the evening.

The PM will also lobby President Trump to step up support for Ukraine at a time when Nato is braced for fresh provocations from Vladimir Putin.

He will also raise the continuing fallout from the war in the Middle East, which is pushing up energy prices across the world.

But sources said he plans to use the gathering of world leaders in New York to focus on encouraging cooperation on AI.

‘We are at our strongest when we work with our partners to tackle the most complex shared challenges we face, driven by our values,’ he said.

‘When the global financial crisis hit, the UK brought together the world’s leading economies. As we confront the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence, we will show that same leadership, ensuring rapidly changing technology is harnessed for good to make our countries safer and stronger.’

Senior figures in the tech industry have issued a series of alarming warnings in recent weeks. The head of alignment at Anthropic said there was a 10 per cent chance that AI could ‘kill all humans’ within the next decade, leading the firm’s boss Dario Amodei to call for an agreement to slow the pace of technology.

President Trump dismissed warnings about the threat to life from AI as a ‘hoax’ designed to dent the lead of US firms in the race to produce super intelligence.

The PM said the warnings had ‘made me pause’.

He said he believed AI could be a ‘force for good’ but said the risks had to be guarded against.

He added: ‘I note the president has I think said himself we need to be careful as well as look at the benefits, but be careful. And we’ve got to find that point of balance here, not all of a sudden turn against and become… a doom-monger about AI. I think you have to be clear-eyed about the huge benefits it can bring as well as recognising where we do need to be careful.’

Officials believe the White House is also concerned about potential harms caused by the technology. At the weekend, Mr Trump announced the creation of a new ‘AI Force’ which would monitor the technology for ‘bad’ outcomes, which he said could be done ‘very easily’.

Britain and the US will today unveil a new ‘AI and Autonomy partnership’ aimed at using AI to help detect and counter potential threats to critical national infrastructure. The Ministry of Defence and the Pentagon will team up to accelerate the delivery of joint capabilities that ‘enhance deterrence and both countries’ technological edge’.

I Cut Off My Friend After She Sent Hurtful Texts About My First Home

0

Buying a first home should be a milestone worth celebrating. But for one 24-year-old, the excitement was quickly dampened by a friend’s sarcastic reaction.

The first-time buyer had just made an offer on a spacious 1,400-square-foot apartment and excitedly shared the news with a close friend by text.

“Guess who just put an offer down on a condo?” he wrote. Her reply was blunt: “Your parents?”

He explained that the unit he had mentioned several months earlier had come back onto the market.

“Apparently, the previous sale fell through and the owner needs to sell quickly, so they lowered the asking price,” he said. “With the money I’ve saved, plus the inheritance I received after my granddad passed away two years ago, I’m hoping I get the place.”

Rather than congratulate him, his friend launched into a lengthy warning, accusing him of making a “reckless decision.”

“I just feel spending all that to live in a cubicle is an extremely poor choice,” she wrote.

“I know you said you don’t think you’ll find anyone soon and that you don’t need much space because all you do is game. But as you get older, I feel you will 100 percent regret not having your own space to do things, host people, have a yard and enjoy the outdoors.”

Her criticism continued.

“I just don’t see it as owning when you have such a small space, a whole bunch of neighbours and building management to deal with. It just seems like a poor choice.”

She encouraged him to wait, save more money and eventually buy a house instead.

“You could have your own space for your car, a yard, and the fact that you’re likely to find someone and have a family means you’ll have room to grow,” she said.

The friend then sent him a “list of things to consider,” including annual maintenance fees, the approvals required for renovations, limited privacy and potentially slower market growth if he decided to sell the apartment later.

“Yearly maintenance fees are low in the first year so people will be dumb enough to purchase, and those fees go up 20 to 50 percent after the second year,” she claimed. She also argued that he would not have “full property ownership” by living in an apartment.

“Your life and your choices, but I feel you are jumping the gun and making a reckless decision,” she concluded.

Taken aback, the man replied: “That’s fair, and I appreciate you looking out for me, but I’m so excited. This is all I’ve wanted for a long time.”

He added: “If I meet someone and we want to start a family or move in together, we’ll get a different place. We can cross that bridge when the time comes.”

Is it ever justified to cut off a friend over their reaction to your big life milestones?

His unenthusiastic friend sent a snarky reply: ‘Well best of luck then lol.

‘I can’t wait for the “you were right”.’

He ended the conversation with: ‘Thanks! Good thing I don’t have a lot to move.’

Sharing their text exchange, the man said they used to be ‘close’ but he noticed his friend getting ‘progressively distant and meaner over the past four months.

‘When I shared the news, I was expecting at least a “congratulations” and this is what I got,’ he said.

‘I thought it was time… I decided to cut off a friend.’

The young man said he was looking forward to buying his first home as he’d been living with his parents in a tiny bedroom.

‘This is going to be a huge upgrade for me,’ he said.

‘The place I put an offer on is 1,400-square-foot and is nearly the same size as the house I’m currently in – let alone the fact that I live with my parents and my only personal space is a small bedroom.’

Instead of offering words of encouragement or support, his friend went on a bizarre rant, claiming he was 'making a reckless decision'

He added: ‘She knows I’ve been saving up for a place for a long time and she knew how much it meant to me yet still said what she did.’

What baffled him the most was that his friend was renting with her boyfriend.

His post was met with more than 4,200 comments, with many suggesting the friend may be ‘jealous’ about his purchase.

‘That’s a whole lot of wrong words to say, “Congratulations I’m happy for you”. What a bad friend,’ one said.

‘I’d block and never look back. This response is so sh**. I can’t believe there are people so miserable out there,’ another shared.

‘That is not your friend. That is a person actively hoping you fail and have things go terribly for you so they can have a nice “I told you so”,’ one suggested.

‘When she said, “Your parents?” I read that as a clear indicator that she was hugely jealous. She cannot bear the thought that he got his s*** together sufficiently to make this big move,’ another added.

Meanwhile, others shared how their lives changed after purchasing an apartment.

‘I bought a tiny condo in my city. I was still able to host parties and friends, it was a studio style setup. Then I met my now-husband, who owned his own house and yard, and moved in with him. The condo is now an investment for me. You live your life on your own timeline, not worrying about if or when you meet someone,’ one said.

‘I had my condo for 30 years. It’s perfect for a first time home owner. Guess what I regret doing? Selling my beautiful condo a few years ago and buying my too large home with all of the things your friend says you needed,’ another revealed.

Magic Johnson Shares Encouraging Update on Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

0

The Washington Commanders may need a little “magic” as they await clarity on Jayden Daniels’ injured left elbow.

The star 25-year-old quarterback dislocated the elbow during Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. It is the second consecutive season Daniels has sustained the same injury; he missed four games after dislocating his elbow last year.

X-rays on Daniels’ elbow were negative, the team revealed Monday, though Washington is still collecting information before determining the next steps for its franchise quarterback. Marcus Mariota is already expected to start the Commanders’ upcoming matchup against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

While the team evaluates Daniels’ condition, an encouraging update on his outlook came from an unexpected source: Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Johnson posted on X Monday that he had spoken with Daniels, writing: “I just had a good check-in call with our @Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels! I was happy to hear that he’s in good spirits, and I’m praying for a safe and healthy recovery 🙏🏾”.

Johnson is a minority owner of the Commanders and has built a close relationship with Daniels since Washington selected the quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Hearing that Daniels is in “good spirits” does not provide the definitive medical update Commanders supporters and fantasy football managers are hoping for. Still, it offers some encouragement and could suggest that Daniels has a chance to return to the field relatively soon.

Trump Mocked as Media Ban Backfires in Spectacular Fashion

0

Donald Trump faced a wave of criticism on Monday after the White House media restrictions appeared to backfire, leaving viewers around the world watching a South Lawn ribbon-cutting ceremony without any usable sound.

The president was marking the opening of a new granite helipad, standing alongside construction workers as he prepared to board the latest Marine One helicopter. The facility is estimated to have cost $6 million and was built after the powerful aircraft reportedly scorched the White House lawn.

With the usual television press pool—representing ABC, CBS, Fox, CNN and NBC—not covering the event, viewers were left in silence when Trump began speaking. The White House video feed showed the president, but provided no functioning audio.

The networks had announced earlier that they would suspend coverage of presidential pool events after the Trump administration blocked reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico over the weekend.

Trump-friendly network Newsmax carried the White House livestream, cutting to images of the president speaking outside the building. His remarks, however, could not be heard by viewers.

“Okay, there is no microphone because the pool cameras aren’t there,” the anchor told the audience. “So maybe this is one example of this backfiring just a little bit … the ramifications are right here—we can’t hear what the president is saying.”

The awkward broadcast quickly became a target of online ridicule, with clips of the silent ceremony circulating widely across social media.

Veteran Capitol Hill correspondent Jamie Dupree posted: “Here is what happens when you don’t have the White House TV Pool. You have video of Trump—but you can’t hear what the President is saying.”

The White House also unveiled its own app on Monday, promoting “real-time updates and live events streamed DIRECTLY to your phone.”

“No noise. Just the news that matters most—straight from the Trump Administration,” the White House wrote on X.

The confrontation intensified after CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed suit against the administration, saying their journalists had been refused entry at the White House gates over the weekend.

“This ban could not be a more direct assault on the First Amendment nor a more blatant violation of our most fundamental constitutional principles,” attorneys for the outlets said in a 27-page complaint filed Monday.

Later that day, the country’s major television networks announced that they would halt presidential pool coverage in support of the affected news organizations.

Bryan Boughton, Fox News Washington bureau chief and the current chair of the television pool, informed subscribers by email: “This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President.”

“This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.”

The disruption comes at a particularly busy moment for Trump. The president embarked on a diplomatic whirlwind, traveling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly before returning to Washington to receive Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Xi’s visit is set to feature a lavish state welcome, but if the TV pool suspension holds, the networks may not provide pool coverage of the events.

Trump will be waiting at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday when Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan arrive.

The next morning, the White House will hold a State Arrival Ceremony involving 479 service members, with every branch of the military represented. A B-2 Spirit and four F-22 Raptors will fly overhead before Trump and Melania host Xi for a State Dinner.

Honor guards have spent days rehearsing on the White House grounds for a welcome designed to mirror the treatment Beijing gave Trump in May.

Trump wanted the helipad completed before Xi’s arrival and crews raced to finish it, according to the South China Morning Post.

It is not yet clear whether the Xi events will be designated pool coverage and so fall under the boycott.

‘I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday.

He warned that ‘other Fake News Media Outlets’ could be next and has also threatened action against the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Reporters from the three outlets were turned away when they arrived for work on Saturday, with Secret Service officers confiscating their hard passes at the gates.

CNN’s Betsy Klein, who has covered the White House since 2018, was told her pass had been deactivated before an officer took it from her.

When MS NOW’s Akayla Gardner asked why hers had been disabled, the officer told her such matters were ‘above’ him. Politico’s Cheyenne Haslett was also stripped of her pass.

CNN had been due to lead the TV pool on Monday, the day of the helipad unveiling, but was struck from the schedule in White House guidance sent at 10.55pm on Sunday, according to the three outlets’ lawsuit.

The ban immediately affected entire newsrooms. At the time, 40 CNN journalists and 22 from MS NOW held hard passes, according to the complaint.

The suit names Trump, chief of staff Susie Wiles, communications director Steven Cheung and Secret Service director Sean Curran as defendants and asks a judge to immediately block the ban and return the passes.

The case has landed with US District Judge Timothy Kelly, whom Trump appointed in his first term. He is on familiar legal ground after ordering the White House in 2018 to restore CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credentials after his pass was pulled following a heated clash with Trump.

Trump turned on Kelly, writing on Truth Social: ‘They have drawn a great Judge, for them, a man who ruled in favor of Jim Acosta, who now seems to have disappeared from the Planet.’

‘The Judge’s name is Tim Kelly, and he was, sadly, appointed by “TRUMP.”‘

Trump vowed to appeal, arguing that outlets which ‘only write negatively’ should not be allowed into ‘the most important Office anywhere in the World.’

‘It is called the Oval Office, and it should be treated with Decorum, Respect, and Dignity, not defiled by Third Rate Clowns, who purposefully distort, twist, and degrade with everything they write or publish,’ he wrote.

‘The fact is, I won all seven Swing States, the Popular Vote, the Electoral College (312 to 226), and the Counties throughout America by 86%, and yet it is reported that I get 94% bad publicity.

‘Why should I have to give “access” to such people? Perhaps Judge Kelly could explain that!’

He also renewed his demand that Politico ‘Pay back the 8 Million Dollar contribution made by the US Government to keep them afloat!’ The lawsuit calls the claim ‘categorically false and debunked.’

Trump last week told reporters in the Oval Office that no single article prompted the ban, blaming ‘cumulative stories over the last two years.’

‘You get sick of it,’ he said. ‘I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can, and if they could straighten themselves out, I’d love it.’

Vice President JD Vance defended the move on Monday. ‘It’s about basic fairness,’ he said. ‘They can still report. They still have the access to free speech. They’re just not going to get an office in the White House anymore.’

But the First Lady’s office is taking a different approach, adding to the confusion surrounding coverage of the White House.

Melania’s office approved CNN’s request to cover her announcement at the St. Regis hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday, a source familiar with the matter told the Daily Mail.

CNN crews also covered Secretary of State Marco Rubio as he opened the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.

Major Networks Boycott Trump’s UN Visit After CNN, MS NOW Ban

0

Major U.S. television networks will not send reporters or camera crews to cover Donald Trump’s appearance at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, joining a coordinated protest over the White House’s decision to bar CNN and MS NOW. Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC—collectively part of the television news pool—have opted out of presidential coverage for the day. As a result, Trump’s trip to New York is not expected to air on the major broadcast networks. Conservative outlet Real America’s Voice plans to stream the event from the UN, while local television operator Hearst will cover the president’s activities at the White House. Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton, who chairs the TV pool and oversees the logistics of presidential coverage, confirmed the move in an email sent Monday morning. “This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Boughton wrote.

White House leaves TV pool vacant

“This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.” It remains unclear when the networks will resume their regular coverage of Trump. CNN had been scheduled to provide the pool crew Monday, before the president barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House. The administration’s official guidance issued Sunday also confirmed that no television pool would operate Monday, effectively removing CNN from the rotation. Trump has additionally threatened possible action against The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Broadcasters condemn White House press ban

Trump announced the bans Friday, labeling the outlets “fake news” and criticizing their coverage of his administration. Vice President JD Vance defended the decision Monday, saying it was “about basic fairness.” “They can still report. They still have access to free speech. They’re just not going to get an office in the White House anymore,” Vance said. Reporters from the affected organizations who arrived at the White House over the weekend saw some of their press credentials revoked. In response, the major broadcasters joined forces with the targeted outlets and issued a sharply worded condemnation of the administration’s action.

Trump calls media coverage ‘fake news’

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” the broadcasters said. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.” Asked for a response, the White House pointed to a social media statement Trump posted early Monday. “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish,” Trump wrote. “It is instituting an assault on the fake news, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America.” He described the media as “corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control,” calling it a threat to national security that “must be stopped, now!”

Outlets challenge White House ban in court

While CNN was banned from the White House, its reporters and crew still covered Secretary of State Marco Rubio as he opened the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, showing that the White House ban does not extend to other departments. The three media outlets Trump targeted, CNN, MS NOW and Politico, announced they would combat the administration in court over the ban. 'This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,' they said in a statement released on Monday. 'Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists' credentials because it objected to our reporting,' the statement continued. 'Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public's right to independent journalism free from government interference.' US District Judge Timothy Kelly, who Trump appointed in his first term, is presiding over the case and is on familiar legal ground. In 2018, he ordered the White House to restore CNN journalist Jim Acosta's credentials after his press pass was pulled following a heated clash with Trump. The White House also published a cryptic social media post on Monday with a TV showing static with the caption: 'Something's coming. Stay tuned.'

Although CNN has been excluded from the White House, its journalists and production crew continued covering Secretary of State Marco Rubio as he opened the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, underscoring that the ban does not apply across the entire federal government. CNN, MS NOW and Politico said they would challenge the administration in court. “This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the organizations said in a statement. “Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” they added, warning that the decision could threaten press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, appointed by Trump during his first term, is overseeing the case. He previously ordered the White House in 2018 to restore CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credentials after they were revoked following a confrontation with the president. The White House also posted an ominous message Monday featuring a television displaying static and the caption: “Something’s coming. Stay tuned.”

Taylor Frankie Paul Hints She May Leave The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives

Paul said members of the production team were among the only people connected to the show who reached out while she was going through a difficult period.

“I’ve always treated the production team and crew with respect, and they were the ones who checked in on me throughout this experience,” she said. Paul added that the situation had felt like bullying for months, made even more painful by what she described as the hypocrisy of parents criticizing her for mistakes they had also made.

For that reason, Paul said she felt it was best to step away and allow the others to move forward. She acknowledged that some of the backlash was connected to her own actions, but said the criticism had led her to nearly believe she deserved all the pain she was experiencing.

“I kept asking myself how much suffering and scrutiny would finally be enough,” she continued. “More than anything, I’m relieved to be out.”

E! News has contacted representatives for Paul and Hulu seeking comment, but neither had responded at the time of publication.

Murdaugh Defense Says Male DNA Under Victim’s Nails Was Untested

Attorneys for Alex Murdaugh are asking a South Carolina judge to compel prosecutors to release additional forensic evidence, including unidentified male DNA recovered from beneath Maggie Murdaugh’s fingernails. The defense says the state crime lab located the DNA but never completed testing it.

In a 93-page motion filed Friday, Murdaugh’s lawyers also sought additional ballistics evidence and the raw data from a laser scan of the crime scene in Colleton County, South Carolina.

The defense accused South Carolina prosecutors of delaying the release of evidence in a way that could undermine its preparation for Murdaugh’s upcoming retrial.

“Every week the State withholds this material is a week taken from the preparation of the defense, and if the delay continues the defense may be forced to seek a continuance that Mr. Murdaugh does not want and that the Court has said it will not grant. The State should not be permitted to create, through inaction, the very delay it would then oppose,” the motion states.

Murdaugh’s defense team had previously asked that the DNA collected from beneath Maggie Murdaugh’s fingernails be sent to Othram, Inc. After Othram examined the evidence, the defense argued that more testing was necessary to develop a male DNA profile that the state crime lab had identified but did not fully pursue.

The attorneys also want additional testing of a partial DNA profile obtained from swabs taken from Maggie Murdaugh’s phone.

The defense is further seeking records of every shooting in counties surrounding the crime scene in which .300 Blackout shell casings or projectiles were recovered, as well as details about those incidents. Lawyers also requested the raw data from a 3D laser scan that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conducted at the scene. Prosecutors provided a read-only viewer file in 2022, but the defense says it needs the underlying data to recreate the scene.

Murdaugh’s attorneys also accused prosecutors of changing their position on the alleged murder weapon. At his 2023 trial, the state described the .300 Blackout rifle as uncommon and used that argument to point toward the Murdaugh family’s guns. Prosecutors now characterize the cartridge as one of the most popular AR cartridges in the country, according to the motion.

“The State has had continuous and exclusive custody of every item of physical evidence in this case, including the biological material that is the subject of Part III of this motion, for more than five years. It has tested what it wished to test, in the sequence it wished to test it, without notice to the defense and without the defense’s consent. It now proposes that the defense may not do the same,” Murdaugh’s lawyers argued.

Joshua Ritter, a former prosecutor and Fox News contributor, said seeking additional DNA testing could prove risky for Murdaugh’s defense, describing the request as a “big gamble.”

“I think it’s probably better left alone by the defense so that they can make that argument about this unknown male. ‘Who is that? Why didn’t the prosecution test it? Why didn’t they do anything about it?’ Maybe they’re concerned that the prosecution could point the finger right back at them and say, well, you guys didn’t test it either, you had it for as much time as we did,” he said.

Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of killing his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, at the family’s Moselle property in Colleton County. The South Carolina Supreme Court later overturned the convictions after determining that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced the jury. Murdaugh’s retrial is scheduled to begin April 5, 2027.

Apple Engineer, 35, Killed in San Francisco Bay Boat Capsize

A 35-year-old Apple software engineer, married father of three, has been identified as the California man who died after a boat crashed in San Francisco Bay.

The fishing vessel, carrying three people, struck rocks and capsized near the Golden Gate Bridge’s north tower shortly after 6am on Thursday, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Marin County Coroner later identified Daniel Zhengyu Qin as the only person killed in the San Francisco Bay boat crash.

All three people aboard the vessel suffered life-threatening injuries, but emergency crews from multiple agencies recovered them alive after receiving a 911 call.

The three victims were taken to a local hospital. Qin later died from his injuries “despite prolonged resuscitative efforts,” according to the sheriff’s office.

An online fundraiser organized for Qin’s wife, Yao Deng, described him as “a beloved software engineer at Apple, a devoted husband, and a loving father to three young children.”

The fundraiser was launched on Friday by family friend Cathy Wu, who remembered Qin as “kind, funny, and endlessly generous.”

Qin leaves behind an 11-year-old son and two daughters, aged nine and three.

“His sudden passing has left his wife and children facing an unimaginable loss, both emotionally and financially,” Wu wrote.

“He got along effortlessly with his coworkers, his children looked up to him, and his friends adored him. He was always the first to show up when anyone needed help.”

Public records show that Qin and his wife lived in a San Diego home valued at $1.7 million.

The fundraiser is seeking $200,000 to help Qin’s family cover funeral and memorial costs, his children’s everyday expenses and emergency needs during the coming months.

More than $76,500 had been raised by Monday afternoon.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said investigators have not yet determined what caused the boat crash that killed Qin.

A forensic post-mortem examination, including “routine toxicology testing,” is expected to be completed within the next few days, the sheriff’s office said.

The cause and manner of Qin’s death remain undetermined as the investigation continues.

The agencies involved in the response to the crash and rescue efforts included the US Coast Guard, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District, the San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit, the Sausalito Fire Department and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that its crew arrived about five minutes after receiving a distress call about the crash and that it rescued two people from the water, while the San Francisco Police Department rescued a third.

‘Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost his life,’ Captain Jarod Toczko, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, said in the statement.

‘While our crews and partner agencies worked together to bring all three people to safety, we recognize that this rescue ended in a heartbreaking loss. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.’

These Florida Communities Could Lose Most Under New Property Tax Plan

0

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida voters will decide in November whether to approve Amendment 3, a sweeping property tax proposal that could deliver significant savings to homeowners throughout the state.

Opponents, however, caution that the measure could create a serious financial strain for local governments, which rely on property tax revenue to support essential services such as police protection and public libraries.

With debate intensifying ahead of the vote, nonprofit research organization Florida Tax Watch has created a “resource center” to help residents understand how Amendment 3 could affect taxpayers and public budgets.

Florida Tax Watch estimates that the proposal could reduce local property tax collections by more than $45 billion over five years, although the impact would vary from one community to another.

HOW MUCH WILL MY LOCAL COUNTY LOSE?

The projected statewide property tax reductions are expected to reach the following levels:

FY2027-28: $4.93 billion

  • FY2028-29: $8.71 billion

  • FY2029-30: $9.65 billion

  • FY 2030-31: $10.71 billion

  • FY 2031-32: $11.83 billion

Together, those figures amount to an estimated $45.84 billion in reduced property tax revenue by the close of fiscal year 2032. If Amendment 3 is approved, each county is also projected to experience losses by that time.

    WHAT IS AMENDMENT 3 ABOUT?

Known as HJR 1F, the amendment would establish a new homestead exemption for Florida residents on property taxes that do not support public schools.

Under Florida’s existing homestead exemption system, two separate portions of a property’s assessed value are excluded from taxation:

Assessed Value Application of Homestead Exemption (Current)
The first $25,000 Exempt from all property tax
    –> $50,000 Fully taxable
    –> $75,000 Exempt from non-school taxes
Remaining value Taxable, though other exemptions may apply

HJR 1F would limit the exemption to non-school property taxes, but it would substantially increase the amount of assessed value eligible for the break:

    2027 — First $150,000 of assessed value

  • 2028 — First $250,000 of assessed value

  • 2029 onward — First $250,000 of assessed value, indexed to inflation

However, this only applies to homeowners who are permanent residents of Florida before the proposed amendment takes effect on Jan. 1, 2027 (if it gets approved, that is). For newcomers, the timeline is a bit different.

HJR 1F instead provides new residents with a five-year homestead exemption that comes out as follows:

Assessed Value Application of Homestead Exemption (Current)
The first $25,000 Exempt from school taxes
    –> $50,000 Exempt from non-school taxes
    Remaining value Taxable

After this five-year period, the new residents will then be eligible for the higher exemption.

Meanwhile, the amendment also reduces the annual non-homestead property assessment growth cap from 10% to 5%, limiting how much these sorts of properties may be assessed each year.

In addition, the plan limits how local governments may spend property tax revenue:

Public safety, including law enforcement, EMS and fire services

  • Education and public schools

  • Infrastructure, including roads, bridges and stormwater controls

  • Natural resource projects, including flood control measures

  • Issue local bonds for approved uses or to make debt service payments

  • Meet obligations and retirement benefits of local government employees

  • Fund the operations and administration of county officers and commissioners

While the amendment has been approved by lawmakers, it will still need 60% approval from voters in the general election on Nov. 3.
