High-Stakes Showdown: Trump-Backed Senator Darline Graham Nordone Takes on Ralph Norman

0

Senator Darline Graham Nordone is banking on the endorsement of former President Donald Trump as she faces off against Representative Ralph Norman in a pivotal political contest.

Until recently, Sen. Nordone was relatively unknown in political circles. For the past 20 years, she has been known as Mrs. Nordone, though she has adopted the title of Sen. Graham following the passing of her brother, Lindsey Graham, 45 days ago.

The support from Trump, who urged South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint her as a tribute to the late Lindsey Graham, propelled this newcomer into the upper echelons of politics, filling her brother’s Senate seat for the rest of his term.

Shortly after her appointment, she announced her intention to pursue a complete six-year Senate term.

However, Trump’s backing did not deter ambitious South Carolina politicians. Entrants in the race include Ralph Norman, Representative Russell Fry, and former governor and representative Mark Sanford, among others.

Norman received only about a quarter of the primary vote, but that was good enough to make the runoff.

But it was Nordone’s total, only about a third of votes cast despite her incumbency and Trump’s endorsement, that raised the most red flags.

Little public polling has informed on the state of the race. Trafalger, a respected polling firm which has close ties to Trump, published a poll Monday night which showed the race virtually tied. However, multiple reports have suggested internal polling from both camps has Norman ahead by double digits.

Trump has done what he can to boost Nordone, visiting the state for one of his trademark rallies and holding a tele-rally Monday night.

But Nordone has done little to help herself.

In the only televised debate of the runoff, she said she “is not that informed on national security.” And despite her claims to be further to the right than her brother on the critical issue of immigration, she has spurned opportunities to offer specifics, even telling reporters she has no thoughts on DACA. Additionally, she was not immediately able to comment on her birthright citizenship stance in response to a reporter question.

In the House, Norman’s vote was always there when Trump needed him, although he sometimes needed pulled back to the center to support compromises Trump’s legislative team had engineered.

But his 2024 endorsement of Nikki Haley, one made based more on longtime political friendship than on ideology, likely ensured Trump’s runoff support of Nordone.

With such a tight timeline and under such unusual circumstances, turnout is difficult to project. Either candidate could win, perhaps even decisively.

Runoffs in Oklahoma are taking place as well, with the gubernatorial GOP runoff between Trump-endorse Mike Mazzei and Attorney General Gentner Drummond drawing headlines.

But most eyes are on South Carolina, where polls close at 7 p.m. ET. Polls close in Oklahoma at 8 p.m. ET.

UPDATE 9:53 p.m. ET:

In her victory speech, Nordone offers up some Republican boomer red meat about the evils of socialism, insisting South Carolinians must reject democratic socialists – basically the same messaging most generic establishment Republicans in the Senate parrot.

She will likely be a reliable vote for Trump, but keep in mind he is only in office for two more years. Republicans are almost universally expected by political prognosticators to lose the House, if not also the Senate. So what few meaningful votes the Senate takes next year will be on a handful of spending bills.
How she will vote in the remaining two-thirds of her term is anyone’s guess, but the way that Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) have rallied behind her, she likely won’t be a conservative favorite. Regardless, she’ll have a chance to chart her own path.

UPDATE 9:48 p.m. ET:

Mazzei has pulled ahead in Oklahoma. He is up a percentage point with 82 percent of the vote in. This would be Trump’s second high profile victory of the night if it holds.

It’s worth noting that Trump’s endorsement of Mazzei caught many Oklahomans off guard. The primary was crowded and Mazzei was not seen as one of the leading contenders by many in the state.

UPDATE 9:13 p.m. ET:

In Oklahoma, with exactly 50 percent of the vote in, Drummond is at 50 percent to Mazzei’s 50 percent. As close as it gets!

UPDATE 8:58 p.m. ET:

Sen. Darline Graham Nordone has won the Republican nomination for Senate in South Carolina, NBC News projects.

With 81 percent in, her lead is 54 percent to Rep. Ralph Norman’s 46 percent.

The victory is shared with Trump, who endorsed Nordone soon after the death of her brother Lindsey Graham. As – News reported, significant funding in the two-week runoff was spent on her behalf as well, over $5 million in independent expenditures.

She will be heavily favored in November against Democrat nominee Annie Andrews.

UPDATE 8:51 p.m. ET:

Further west in Oklahoma, AG Gentner Drummond is leading Trump-endorsed Mike Mazzei with 24 percent of the vote in. Drummond is at 51.5 percent to Mazzei’s 48.5. Its still early-ish but results will begin coming in quickly soon.

UPDATE 8:45 p.m. ET:

With 75 percent of the vote in, Nordone has extended her vote to 6 points. A call might be coming soon.

Norman has done well in his home district where voters best know him, but outside his region, voters appear to have gone with Trump.

UPDATE 8:27 p.m. ET:

Right on cue, a big batch from Greenville County arrived, most of it early votes. The breakdown remains about 68 percent there for Norman, but the new votes cut Nordone’s lead statewide to under 6,000 votes, 51 percent to 49. This ain’t over yet.

Statewide, 62 percent of votes are in.

UPDATE 8:24 p.m. ET:

Only 12 percent of the vote in Greenville, Norman’s home county, is in. While Norman is up big there, he will need an overwhelming showing the rest of the way there to square the race. Not impossible but tough.

UPDATE 8:12 p.m. ET:

Nordone’s lead has remained steady for a spell at around 8 points. Over a third of the vote is now in.

Interestingly, Turning Point’s Tyler Bowyer points out that South Carolina’s open primary system allows Republican candidates to target Democrat voters who did not vote in their primary. In a special election like this, where Democrats had already nominated their candidate in the previous non-special, that essentially means any voter in the state could vote in today’s special GOP primary.

For a candidate like Graham who was aided by many big spenders, many who likely opposed the conservative Norman in the Senate, that could pay dividends.

UPDATE 7:59 p.m. ET:

It’s worth noting how heavily Nordone is relying on Trump’s endorsement. If she wins tonight, the victory will be his. Despite entering politics for the first time 45 days ago, she took great pains to withhold sharing her views or convictions on critical issues and spurned media, including multiple requests from – News. Norman joined – News Saturday on SiriusXM for an extended 20-minute interview during the runoff.

Nordone’s national security gaffe might explain her silence, and keeping mum on immigration may have been necessary for someone who, for all we know, spent no time contemplating the issue before 45 days ago.

Embarrassingly, Nordone’s staffer was caught telling a reporter granted a rare interview “nothing too difficult here.”

UPDATE 7:52 p.m. ET:

Norman is trying to run up the score upstate in his home region and is doing well, but Nordone is doing well in most of the rest of the county, extending beyond her low country base of Charleston.

Fry’s Dee Dee region in the northeast is going for Nordone. After finishing third in the primary, Fry endorsed Nordone after Trump’s request.

But the race has tightened. Nordone’s lead is 53 percent to Norman’s 47 with 22 percent of the vote in.

UPDATE 7:30 p.m. ET:

Only about 9 percent of the projected vote is in, but Nordone is up 57 percent to Norman’s 43. Most of what we are seeing reported right now are early votes cast before Election Day.

There’s a long way to go, but Nordone is likely pleased with the trend so far.

The Jolene singer had many A-list admirers, some of whom she had gone on to forge close friendships with

‘Dolly, you were the barometer. The north star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious,’ Beyonce wrote in an outpouring of compliments. ‘You taught so many lessons on how to be uniquely oneself.

‘I am grateful for your art, your heart, your generosity, your humor, your entrepreneurship,’ the hitmaker continued, before referencing her collaboration with Parton on Cowboy Carter. ‘I’m honored that I had the privilege to work with you. I will treasure that forever.

‘Thank you for your profound impact on the world,’ Beyonce wrote as she concluded her tribute. ‘You are an angel who has made this world a happier place because of your joyful art. You are truly one of one. Rest peacefully.’

Carpenter remembered Parton by sharing photos from their collaboration on the video to a remix of her song Please Please Please, which featured the country music icon.

‘oh dolly [broken-heart emoji] the only thing i could say after we first met was “she really is an angel walking the earth” and “we look like we could be sisters!”’ Carpenter – who bonded with Parton over their mutual height of just five feet – gushed in her caption.

‘i will cherish our laughter and conversations and i will keep your wisdom, your playful outlook on life, and perfect sense of humor in my pocket for the rainy days,’ she continued. ‘there will never be another you and how lucky are we all to have experienced your singular magic as well as your once in a lifetime voice, songs, and heart.

‘your light will be something the world will search forever to find again,’ Carpenter added, before a final message that quoted the refrain of one of Parton’s most famous songs: ‘i will always love you.’

Fonda shared a black-and-white still of herself and Parton laughing on the set of their 1980 workplace comedy 9 To 5 in her Instagram tribute.

‘I am devastated. I just learned that Dolly has moved on. I know that millions are mourning and I want to say this – more than anyone I have ever known, Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous and playful that she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever,’ Fonda began her loving post. ‘We have our memories of her, her songs, Dollywood, “9to5,” the millions of books she got into the hands of children, all the iconic images that bring her to us. And they are all blessings. Let’s be grateful for all that she has left us to ease our sadness now.

‘I never knew anyone like her,’ Fonda admitted. ‘She was simultaneously a naughty, playful southern gal from the hollows of Tennessee and a deep, soulful thinker who could see through people right down to their true selves. She was many things…lyricist, songstress, player of many instruments, writer, prankster, visionary, loyal friend, who’d never go to bed before she and her friends had laughed so hard they’d have to cross their legs.’

Fonda also remembered Parton at her most playful and over-the-top.

‘She had a survivor’s instinct and seemed to always know just what to do, just what to say, to make things right…and then she’d stick her butt out the car window and moon Kenny Rogers’s home,’ the actress recalled. ‘She was the voluptuous embodiment of empathy. That’s something of hers she’d want us all to take with us.’

The Oscar winner also included a message to Parton’s numerous LGBTQ fans, who took solace in her inclusive messages and were sometimes inspired by her campy fashion choices.

‘To her gay and trans fans, I want you to know that she loved you. You know that without me telling you,’ Fonda added. ‘She loved all her fans and they are legion. And you know she doesn’t want y’all to mourn now. Dress up and celebrate her spirit. But first, watch the final episode of Grace and Frankie where she’s an Angel, the head honcho working class angel in Heaven.’

Fonda signed off with a final message to her late friend: ‘RIP, beautiful woman. We love you ❤️.’

She is a great example for us all.’

‘There will never be another. @dollyparton was who we could all agree on and she was such a light,’ the My Church singer stated.

The legendary country singer’s death was confirmed Tuesday in an Instagram video posted by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also acted as her head of security.

She died Tuesday morning after being admitted Friday to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center with autoimmune and kidney problems, according to TMZ.

Parton’s loved ones began racing to Nashville upon hearing news of her hospitalization, but not all were able to reach her while she was alive.

‘This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,’ Seaver said.

He hailed his aunt for having ‘lived in the light’ and said she was now ‘in the arms of Jesus’ and the company of her late husband Carl Dean, as well as her parents and ‘countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.’

Parton, who is often referred to as the Queen of Country, enjoyed an illustrious music career that spanned an incredible six decades and was arguably best known for her hits Jolene and 9 to 5.

How do you think Dolly Parton’s legacy will shape the future of music and culture in America?

Her passing came after months of health woes that saw her pull out of a string of public appearances, fueling fan fears for her wellbeing.

Seaver fondly recalled joining Parton on tour when he was a child in the 1980s, sharing that she ‘opened doors not just for me but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible.’

He characterized her as ‘a farmer, just like her daddy. He farmed the soil. She farmed songs and happiness. Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life of wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.’

Family insiders indicated that a private service for close friends and relations will be held in Nashville within the next few days.

Masked Philadelphia Terror Suspect Zymire Hughes Arrested in Las Vegas After Nationwide Hunt

0

PHILADELPHIA — In a dramatic turn of events, the suspect who allegedly instilled fear among Philadelphia’s residents by donning a disturbing mask has been apprehended in Nevada, officials revealed on Tuesday.

Law enforcement reported that 22-year-old Zymire Hughes was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force around 8 p.m. in Las Vegas. Hughes is currently detained at the Clark County Detention Center as he waits to be extradited back to Pennsylvania.

According to investigators, Hughes was responsible for chasing and intimidating individuals in Center City during the early hours of August 15. Authorities suspect his motives might have been fueled by a desire for viral fame on social media platforms.

(The video in the player above is from previous coverage.)

Philadelphia Police Captain Jason Smith shared that Hughes confronted approximately 15 to 16 individuals on that fateful morning, spreading unease throughout the community.

Zymire Hughes

In several incidents, police said Hughes approached victims while wearing what authorities described as a “distinctive Chucky doll-style Halloween mask.”

The first reported encounter occurred around 5:01 a.m. near 10th and Chestnut streets.

Police said the incidents culminated near City Hall and SEPTA’s Suburban Station shortly before 6 a.m.

According to investigators, Hughes approached a woman who was jogging near City Hall and asked her, “Are you ready to die?”

Police said the woman ran away screaming for help and seriously injured her leg while trying to escape.

“It’s going to require extensive medical treatment, from what I understand, in order to treat the injuries that she has sustained,” Smith said last week.

Surveillance video shows Hughes entering Suburban Station around 5:35 a.m., where SEPTA police reportedly asked him to remove the mask. Investigators said he attempted to conceal his identity while moving through the station.

Police said Hughes continued trying to frighten people before evading officers. Authorities believe he boarded a Route 33 bus at about 5:59 a.m. and traveled to the area of 23rd and Venango streets, where he reportedly lives.

Officials said Hughes also has ties to California and Las Vegas because of employment.

Police have said Hughes is wanted on charges including terroristic threats, harassment, simple assault and intimidation.

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

Trump Considers Renaming Lake Ontario Amid Tariff Tensions

0

In light of escalating tensions between the United States and Canada over trade, President Donald Trump is contemplating renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

Trump took to social media to announce, “The United States is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, as we foresee reduced business interactions with Ontario.” Ontario is known as Canada’s most populous province and a hub for the country’s automotive sector.

This proposition echoes Trump’s past actions, such as his 2025 executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The diplomatic atmosphere between the two nations has grown tense, with Trump warning Canadian officials on Tuesday to “fall in line.” He threatened more severe consequences than the tariffs already imposed.

Trump added the possibility of imposing new 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, auto parts, and steel. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada criticized the U.S. trade demands, arguing that Washington aims to “cripple our major industries,” which include vehicle production, steel, and aluminum.

Canada hits back at US tariffs

On Wednesday, Canada announced counter-tariffs on US goods, ranging between 15 and 50 per cent, intensifying the trade war between the historically close allies.

Ottawa’s retaliation will take effect on 8 September, a timeframe that Carney had earlier outlined after Trump’s 50 per cent duties came into effect on Sunday.

The steep US tariffs hit approximately US $20 billion (AU $28B) in Canadian goods — about 5.5 per cent of its US exports — after trade negotiations collapsed at the eleventh hour. A wide range of sectors including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods, and hockey equipment are affected.

“Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,” Carney said at a news conference. “We cannot accept what they have offered, and we will not give what they have asked.”

Canada Carney Icebreakers

Under Canada’s planned response, US steel and aluminium products previously subject to a 25 per cent duty will soon face 50 per cent tariffs. Goods facing 25 per cent tariffs include appliances, dairy products like cheese, as well as certain steel and aluminium derivative products. Overall, these formed about 7.3 per cent of Canada’s imports from the US in 2024.

Canada’s government also announced a CAD $5.4 billion (AU $5.4B) aid package for impacted firms and workers.

“This is an unprecedented challenge imposed on Canada. But Canada will meet the moment,” Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said. “I think what Canadians can see this morning is that we stand united. Canada must respond, and today we are, in a proportionate, targeted and strategic way.”

‘We need our neighbour’

Canada and the US share one of the world’s largest trading relationships, with deeply integrated supply chains across autos, energy, agriculture and manufacturing, making a prolonged trade fight potentially costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border. Businesses and consumers are caught in the middle, facing uncertainty about how much prices might increase.

Michael Howard II, owner of a furniture business in Warren, Michigan, told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency that the tariffs would hamper the “ability for us to put food on the table for our family, but also impacts the ability for us to give back to our community.”

“To say that we don’t need Canada is just disingenuous. It’s dishonest. And it’s just absolutely not truthful. We need our neighbour, but also they need us,” Howard added.

Over the weekend, Carney said US negotiators sought restrictions on Canadian trade deals with other countries at the last minute, alongside threats to Quebec culture.

“An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States” was “not something we’re going to accept”, Carney said.

Trump pushed back on the claim on Wednesday, writing: “I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing.”

“This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!”

Man United Insider Scoop: Joshua Zirkzee’s Exit Rumors Heat Up with Aston Villa and Serie A Interest, Plus Amazon Documentary Impact and Faster Beer Queues at Old Trafford

0

Joshua Zirkzee appears poised to part ways with Manchester United in the coming days, according to Confidential‘s sources.

Despite Manchester United’s urgent need to strengthen their squad following an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the season opener, it’s anticipated that Zirkzee will depart before the Tuesday 11pm transfer deadline, likely on a loan deal.

Juventus has shown a keen interest in bringing Zirkzee back to Italy, having been a £36.5 million acquisition from Bologna two years ago. Additionally, Serie A competitors Napoli are monitoring the situation closely, while Aston Villa has also made inquiries.

Although Zirkzee remains a favorite among his Manchester United teammates, his preferred position as a No. 10 clashes with that of club captain Bruno Fernandes, leaving him with few opportunities on the pitch.

In the potential aftermath of Zirkzee’s departure, Manchester United is prioritizing the addition of a new left-back. Interest has been piqued by Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and the 19-year-old prospect Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander. However, confidence within the club regarding further signings, beyond the recent acquisitions of £155 million worth of midfield talent in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, and free-agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow, remains uncertain.

Double or Nothing!

Amazon’s All or Nothing documentary has doubled United’s broadcast commitments this season.

Filming began during the club’s pre-season camp in Dublin earlier this month and hit full flow last week, with crew working on the access-all-areas documentary now part of the furniture at Carrington and Old Trafford. The demands of producing the programme have dawned on those at a club which is already the biggest media draw in the Premier League for players and staff.

The Amazon documentary may be earning the club more than £10million, but it means United face twice the broadcasting demands as before, representing a real challenge in a season that could bring as many as 15 extra games following a return to Europe.

It’s understood that all the United stars have had to sign waivers giving permission to be filmed behind the scenes, and journalists covering the club have done likewise so that footage from Michael Carrick’s press conferences can be included.

MUTV’s studio boost

As much as Amazon are demanding a significant amount of United’s time, Confidential understands the new Snapdragon Studio at Carrington has been installed for the benefit of MUTV rather than the streaming giant.

The editing suite on the first floor of the training ground will be used by the club’s in-house TV station to produce the increasing amount of content United broadcast on their own channels. The equipment there is powered by Snapdragon as part of United’s £60million-a-year shirt sponsorship deal with California-based tech firm Qualcomm which is currently due to run until 2029.

Amazon will have to use their own facilities to produce the highly-anticipated docuseries on United which is due to air in the summer of 2027.

Sleeve it out

With Snapdragon on board as shirt sponsor for at least another three years, and Betway having recently agreed a record deal to have their name on United’s training kit, the club are now looking for a new sleeve sponsor.

United’s £20million-a-year partnership with DXC Technology ran out in May after four seasons, and they kicked off the new campaign at Hull on Saturday without branding on their sleeve for the first time in eight years.

The club were prepared to be patient last season when they went without a training-kit sponsor after the deal with Tezos lapsed, before cashing in on their return to the Champions League this season by signing the multi-year agreement with Betway. The deal, also believed to be worth £20m-a-year, is said to be the biggest standalone training kit or playing shirt sleeve deal in world football.

Reds escape rail chaos

United avoided the rail chaos that affected many of their 2,400 fans at Hull on Saturday by travelling back from Humberside on the team bus – although some players returned under their own steam.

The Reds routinely take the train to games in London, and usually fly further afield, but the 200-mile round trip between Manchester and Hull meant that Carrick and his squad went there and back by bus.

It was just as well after the matchday announcer at the MKM Stadium appeared to take great pleasure in informing the United fans that the trains scheduled to depart from Hull for Manchester at 3.30pm and 5.03pm had been cancelled – much to the delight of the Hull supporters.

The team bus got away on time, but not before Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were spotted walking across the car park towards their own transport. Confidential understands that several other United players did the same because they had plans for their day off on Sunday.

OT is pitch perfect

United may have requested to kick off the new season away from home so they could complete a major upgrade of the pitch at Old Trafford, but Confidential understands that the stadium would comfortably have been ready to host a game last weekend.

The turf has been relaid for the first time in 14 years – complete with new foundations and drainage system – and United have also taken steps to protect the players from injury by safeguarding the perimeter of the pitch.

The club confirmed earlier this summer that ‘the grass is being extended to provide a consistent surface at pitchside, and a layer of protection is being added to the brickwork at the foot of Old Trafford’s famous slope’.

There had been concerns over the ditch and perimeter wall that were created when the pitch was elevated in the 1990s, with players at risk of injury if they came off the grass at speed and collided with the advertising hoardings. Most recently, Benjamin Sesko hurt his shin in the victory over Liverpool in May, with the Slovenian only returning to action at Hull on Saturday.

United have also upgraded the home and away dugouts to increase the number of seats for substitutes and coaching staff from 16 to 20, in keeping with UEFA criteria ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.

All the work was completed in advance of United’s trip to Humberside, meaning the club could have played at Old Trafford last weekend after all, although insiders say the extra week will give the new turf – which is made up of 96 per cent natural grass and four per cent artificial fibres – more time to mature before Sunday’s home opener against Ipswich Town.

United have made the improvements despite pressing ahead with plans to build a new stadium to replace Old Trafford, hopefully by 2035.

The club have also improved the stadium experience for fans as part of new partnership with Levy, the sports and entertainment hospitality specialists. It aims to provide a better quality, faster service for supporters which has seen new draught beer taps installed around Old Trafford. There will be more self-service bars which will enable fans to tap their payment card and grab a beer, which should reduce queues and improve flow.

There will also be a wider range of dining options outside the ground, including a number of kiosks featuring independent Manchester vendors selling street food.

JJ passes Under 21s audition

Confidential was in position at Leigh Sports Village on Monday night to witness JJ Gabriel’s stunning competitive debut for the Under 21s.

Gabriel, still only 15, scored a sublime goal when he chipped Ipswich Town goalkeeper Woody Williamson from outside the area, and also added two assists for Victor Musa and Jaydan Kamason.

Michael Carrick and his assistant Steve Holland were among the small crowd in Leigh, and it was hard not to marvel at Gabriel’s display as he thrived in a No10 role.

The Under-21s played in a 4-2-3-1 system to mirror the first team, even playing without a recognised No9, much like Carrick did at Hull by using Matheus Cunha through the middle. That allowed Gabriel to play the Bruno Fernandes role. The expectation is that Gabriel will train regularly with the first team throughout the season while also playing a starring role in the Under 21s.

Scouts flock to see Under 21s

It was noticeable just how many EFL scouts were there on Monday night to watch an Under 21s team that is still ripe for picking before next week’s deadline.

Kamason and Harry Amass, who started at right-back and left-back in the 5-0 win, are both expected to draw interest. Confidential understands that both are expected to leave, with permanent exits not being ruled out as both players draw significant interest in the Championship, with nothing left for either to gain in academy football.

United have cashed in on several young players this summer as Radek Vitek, Tyler Fredricson and Ethan Williams left the club permanently, with buy-back clauses and matching rights included as part of their exit packages.

New cyber threat warning

News that Premier League teams face a fine of up to £100,000 if they fail to follow new cybersecurity rules coming into effect this season revived memories of the attack on United in November 2020, which paralysed the club’s computer network.

Staff were forced to communicate by WhatsApp for several weeks after the ransomware attack crippled United’s email accounts and other systems, forcing the club to call in the National Cyber Security Centre for help.

It was never revealed how much the hackers demanded as a ransom – or if United paid up – but the NCSC said at the time that the biggest single loss to a sports organisation from cyber-crime was £4million. United are believed to have upgraded their cybersecurity since then in an attempt to prevent another breach. The new rules will be implemented in three phases through April 2029.

Jamie Akhtar, CEO and co-founder of CyberSmart, said: ‘This is an important shift for the Premier League. Cyber security is moving from being viewed primarily as an IT responsibility to becoming an enforceable element of club governance.

‘Football clubs hold significant volumes of sensitive supporter, employee and player data, while also relying on systems for ticketing, payments, stadium access and matchday operations.’

Wes & Pally at Salford

Given that United host Ipswich Town on Sunday, those at a loose end on Saturday need look no further than Salford Lads & Girls Club.

United are teaming up with the iconic club to host an open day where former players Wes Brown and Gary Pallister will be in attendance. The pair are hosting a Q&A at the event which will give fans the chance to buy limited edition adidas third shirts, which have been designed to celebrate the Salford club’s centenary year.

A football fun day, which starts at midday, for those after a football fix on Saturday.

Essential Guardians of the Universe Guide: Everything to Know Before ‘Lanterns

0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4eMQdMWiSU[/embed>

To truly grasp the significance of the Green Lantern Corps, one must delve into the origins of the Guardians of the Universe. These cosmic overseers have been subtly woven into the narrative of “Lanterns” and are expected to play a crucial role if the series continues. Curious about how these illustrious beings rose to prominence and why Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, exhibits such tension towards them? Looper’s insightful explainer video offers the answers you seek.

Generally perched on high in their massive chairs on Oa, the Guardians originally came from Maltus. It was there that Krona, a Maltusian with grand ambitions, constructed a device to observe the universe’s birth, only for it to catastrophically explode. This event splintered the Maltusians into three factions, with one evolving into the Guardians. Relocating to Oa, they imposed order on a disorderly universe, initially through the creation of manhunters.

In the world of “Lanterns,” the ominous presence of a manhunter is noteworthy—and for good reason. Conceived by the Guardians to maintain universal order, these synthetic enforcers were turned uncompromising by Krona’s interference. They deemed any emotional sentient being as a potential threat, leading to the annihilation of Sector 666. This massacre birthed Atrocitus, the inaugural Red Lantern, who could be a hidden antagonist in “Lanterns.” The Guardians largely eradicated the manhunters, yet remnants continue to stir trouble for the Green Lantern Corps in the comics.

How will the Guardians of the Universe factor into Lanterns?

Aside from their foundational role in the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe are pivotal in broader DC Comics history. They orchestrated the voyage of infant Kal-El’s spaceship to Earth and divided Martians into green and white races, instilling a deep-rooted phobia of fire. Due to their immense power, the Guardians recurrently feature in significant DC narratives, often steering key events with their influence.

The Anti-Monitor attacks the Guardians in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” arc where they lose a third of their members. They leave the universe but return in time for the “Emerald Twilight” storyline where Hal Jordan becomes infected with the cosmic parasite of fear, Parallax. After becoming a villain, Hal kills a bunch of Guardians, too, but they get revived in “Green Lantern: Rebirth.”

While they’ve only been referenced so far, “Lanterns” co-creator Chris Mundy confirmed that Laura Linney’s character, who’s been shown in some promotional material, is indeed a Guardian of the Universe. That may seem odd considering she doesn’t look like a short blue person, which is the form most Guardians of the Universe take.

This could be a disguise, which has happened before. The Guardian Appa Ali Apsa took on a human form to accompany Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen on a cross-country journey in the “Hard Traveling Heroes” comic series. But to be ready for any revelation “Lanterns” throws at you, watch Looper’s full Guardians of the Universe video above.

Achieve Elite Arm Strength with This Pushup Benchmark for Over 60s

0

Are you eager to find out how your arm strength measures up at the age of 60? This pushup challenge, endorsed by a seasoned coach, could provide the answer.

>

Many individuals rarely pause to think about their current arm strength, let alone how it will serve them in the future. Yet, robust arms are essential for almost everything you do daily. From taking out the trash and unloading groceries to tucking away the laundry, arm strength plays a vital role. While you might be managing fine now, it’s important to note that aging naturally leads to the loss of lean muscle mass. Tackling this potential decline early on can make a significant difference.

Feeling intrigued? There’s a simple test you can try. According to Luka Hocevar, the Founder and Co-Owner of Vigor Ground Gym in Ljubljana, Slovenia, who also operates Vigor Ground Fitness and Performance in Seattle, WA, accomplishing a specific pushup count after turning 60 signifies “elite” arm strength. A coach with over two decades of experience, Hocevar also offers advice on modifications for those who might find this test challenging.

What Does a Pushup Actually Measure?

Pushups are a stellar exercise that helps you build total-body strength. They channel a “moving plank,” using just your body weight in order to achieve results.

“A pushup measures relative upper-body strength, muscular endurance, but also core strength, [along with] shoulder and scapular stability,” Hocevar explains.

Are Pushups Every Day Enough to Build Upper-Body Strength?

How Can Good Pushup Performance Translate to Daily Life?

Solid pushup performance signals great upper-body and core strength. It directly translates to everyday tasks and chores, like pushing things, being able to stabilize yourself using your upper body, and catching yourself if you trip or fall. All of these things require a strong, stable upper-body and core.

Over 50? If You Can Do This Many Knee Pushups, Your Upper Body Is Stronger Than Most

How To Do Pushups

  1. Start in a high plank with your hands under your shoulders and your body straight from head to heels.
  2. Activate your core.
  3. Bend your elbows to lower your chest toward the floor. Maintain a long, straight body as you lower.
  4. Press back up, straightening your arms.

5 Daily Bodyweight Exercises That Keep You Young After 40

Modifications To Consider

If you’re unable to perform a standard pushup, Hocevar recommends elevating the surface you are doing it from.

“If you’re at the gym, you can elevate a barbell on a rig and complete the reps. As you get stronger, you can lower the barbell to challenge yourself, eventually, over time, getting to the floor,” he explains. “If you are doing pushups at home, you can start from a wall (with very little lean) and then work down to a chair, sturdy table, or sofa, and work your way down to the floor.”

This 15-Minute Morning Routine Reverses Muscle Loss Faster Than Long Workouts After 45

Benchmarks To Strive For

According to Hocevar, these are some standards he has at his gym for clients aged 60+ regarding classic pushups:

Men

  • Fair / Average: 5 to 10 reps
  • Good (Above Average): 12 to 18 reps
  • Elite (Excellent / Top 10%): 20 to 30+ reps

Being able to perform 20 or more classic pushups without sacrificing form places you in an “elite category” for overall physical conditioning.

Women

  • Fair / Average: 2 to 5 reps
  • Good (Above Average): 6 to 10 reps
  • Elite (Excellent / Top 10%): 12 to 16+ reps

Modified / Knee Pushups

  • Fair / Average: 5 to 10 reps
  • Good (Above Average): 12 to 18 reps
  • Elite (Excellent / Top 10%): 19 to 25+ reps

NYPD Investigates Mystery Trio in Overalls Emerging from Manhattan Manhole

0

The New York Police Department has launched an investigation following a viral video that shows three individuals in overalls and wearing headlamps emerging from a manhole in Manhattan.

NYPD officials confirmed to News Media that the peculiar incident unfolded on August 18 at precisely 4:19 a.m. at the southeast corner of 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue, a location conveniently close to Penn Station.

As of now, no arrests have been made regarding this event, although police are diligently reviewing surveillance footage.

Detectives from the NYPD revealed to WABC that they suspect many individuals seen in these videos might be migrants exploring the sewers for valuable items.

Detectives said a scavenger culture exists in nations like Venezuela.

City officials have said that sneaking into manholes is both illegal and “extremely dangerous.”

“DEP has inspected the sewers at the location, and our infrastructure is safe. DEP works closely with our public safety partners to help ensure the safety and security of critical infrastructure throughout New York City,” the city’s Department of Environmental Protection said in a statement to News Media.

The statement continued: “Entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous. Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces. For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall.”

New York City’s sewer system is made up of an elaborate network of more than 7,400 miles of wastewater and stormwater pipes, parts of which date back to the 1800s.

In June, The Associated Press reported on three separate instances of people exiting manholes in Queens and the Williamsburg and Gravesend neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

Many of them were wearing headlamps and were carrying shovels or other tools when they were caught on video.

Darline Graham Clinches South Carolina GOP Senate Runoff, Secures Brother’s Legacy

0

In an intense South Carolina GOP Senate primary showdown, Sen. Darline Graham emerged victorious over Rep. Ralph Norman on Tuesday. This crucial win propels her closer to securing a full term in the seat once held by her brother.

Backed by President Trump, who personally motivated her to vie for the seat vacated by the untimely passing of Sen. Lindsay Graham, Darline Graham edged out Norman with a 53% to 47% margin. This result came after more than 75% of ballots were tallied in the primary runoff.

Graham’s journey to this point saw her defeating not just Norman, but also overcoming a strong field that included names like former Governor Mark Sanford and Rep. Russell Fry, among others, in the August 11 initial special GOP Senate primary.

Russell Fry, after capturing around 20% of the vote and finishing third, promptly threw his support behind Graham, marking a significant endorsement post-defeat.

With substantial backing, including support from Sen. Tim Scott and Governor Henry McMaster, Graham also benefitted from the financial muscle of over $800,000 from the pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., all strengthening her campaign efforts in securing the critical Senate seat.

“We have known each other for a long time — She is a spectacular person, and a true American Patriot,” Trump said of Graham in a Truth Social post on the eve of the runoff.

“Lindsey was one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, and his sister shares his deep love of our Country, and the State of South Carolina,” the president continued, adding that “there is nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother.”

Trump urged South Carolinians to get out and vote for Graham last week, telling his supporters at a packed Myrtle Beach rally to “pretend” he’s on the ballot and warning that they’ll “lose everything” if she doesn’t win her Senate race.

During the primary race, Graham differentiated herself from her brother by highlighting her interest on domestic issues, including affordability, immigration, gun rights, election integrity and opposition to DEI.

“I loved my brother Lindsey, and I miss him so much every day. But on illegal immigration, I’m tougher than he was,” she said at the Myrtle Beach rally. “It’s simple. If you are here illegally, you got to go.”

Graham, a political newcomer, had never held elected public office prior to being tapped to step in for her late brother, who died from an aortic dissection on July 11.

On the campaign trail, she embraced being a Washington outsider.

“Now the critics say I shouldn’t run for the Senate. They say I’m not a politician. You know what I say? Guilty as charged,” Graham said at the rally with Trump.

“And by the way, President Trump had never served in an elected office before, and I think he’s done a damn good job,” she added.

Graham’s inexperience showed during a debate against Norman earlier this month, when she stumbled over a question about the relevance of Taiwan and the South China Sea to US national security.

“I’m not that informed on national security — so,” she replied. “National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military.”

While Norman’s supporters seized on the apparent gaffe, Trump downplayed the effect the moment would have on the race.

“All she was is being honest. She’s very smart, and she was being honest,” Trump told reporters last week.

“I mean, she’s into the price of groceries, the price of food, the price of beef, and it’s not — it hasn’t been her thing, but she’s surrounded by very good people, and she said that she’s totally for the military,” the president added.

In contrast, Norman, a five-term congressman, declared foreign policy and national security to be one of his “top concerns,” along with reining in federal spending.

“I’m going to be a CHAMPION for fiscal conservatism in the Senate,” he wrote on X Tuesday. “Why? You can’t have military superiority WHEN YOU’RE BROKE!

“My opponent doesn’t get that, but I do!”

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and outgoing Rep. Nancy Mace were among the notable pols that backed Norman’s campaign.

Graham will face Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the November general election.

South Carolina is a solidly red state and Graham will likely be heavily favored against the Democrat.

Dolly Parton’s Funeral Arrangements Unveiled Following Her Passing at Age 80

0

The final farewell plans for legendary singer Dolly Parton have been announced, though it won’t be an event for everyone, as her family has requested that no floral tributes be sent.

Beloved for her iconic hit “I Will Always Love You,” Parton’s passing at 80 was confirmed by her nephew, Bryan Seaver. He shared the somber news in a heartfelt video on Tuesday afternoon.

Dolly Parton passed away earlier today, following a recent admission to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center due to complications with autoimmune and kidney issues, as reported by TMZ.

Upon confirmation of her passing, her publicist shared heartfelt tributes on social media, announcing her wish for how she would like to be remembered.

‘In accordance with Dolly’s wishes, there will be an intimate service for close family only. Fans and admirers globally are encouraged to honor Dolly by sharing memories online or leaving messages at dollyparton.com.

‘In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at http://imaginationlibrary.com,’ the statement added.

Further details about her funeral have not been announced.

Mourning fans have started leaving flowers, candles and pictures of Parton on her Hollywood Walk of Fame star in Los Angeles, California.

Seaver, who served as his aunt’s head of security for more than two decades, said in the emotional clip that the video is something his late aunt wanted him to do a couple of years ago.

‘I am representing the Parton and Owens family today, announcing the passing of my Aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,’ Seaver began.

‘Sister, sis, Aunt, Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next.

‘This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality.

‘As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now,’ he said.

Seaver continued: ‘It is an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.’

He went on to hail his aunt for having ‘lived in the light’ and said she was now ‘in the arms of Jesus’ and the company of her late husband Carl Dean, as well as her parents and ‘countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.’

Just four days before her death, the ‘Jolene’ singer told People that she was ‘dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.’

Her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82 after a private battle with Alzheimer’s and other health complications.

The pair were married for 59 years. He largely stayed out of the spotlight throughout their relationship.

She had previously raised fan concerns at the end of September, when she announced that  unspecified ‘health challenges’ had forced her to postpone her Las Vegas residency — originally scheduled from December 4 to December 13 at the Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace — until September 2026.

She shared the news directly with fans on Instagram, explaining that her medical issues had required her to undergo several procedures.

‘I want the fans and public to hear directly from me that, unfortunately, I will need to postpone my upcoming Las Vegas concerts,’ Parton wrote.

‘As many of you know, I have been dealing with some health challenges, and my doctors tell me that I must have a few procedures.’

She became the subject of frightened speculation that October when her sister Freida asked the public for prayers amid the singer’s illness.

‘Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly,’ Frieda wrote on Facebook on October 7, 2025. ‘Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been led to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me.’

As panic mounted, Freida backpedaled, trying to assure the public her sister had ‘been a little under the weather’ but that she never intended to ‘make it sound so serious’ and merely issued her request out of a belief in ‘the power of prayer.’

Parton herself then posted a video of herself in hair, makeup and costume at an ad shoot for the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in order to comfort her fans.

‘Do I look sick to you?’ she chirpily asked, adding that ‘I appreciate your prayers, because I’m a person of faith, I can always use the prayers for anything and everything, but I want you to know that I’m okay!’

Soon after the news broke, tributes started to pour in for the songstress, including one from President Donald Trump.

‘Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people,’ he said, adding that he has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in her honor.

Trump continued: ‘There has never been anyone like her, and never will. In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you. President DONALD J. TRUMP’

Kelly Osbourne also shared a touching post about Parton alongside a photo of her, the late singer, and her son.

‘Dolly, thank you for paving the way. Not only for women in music, but for women everywhere to be unapologetically themselves. You showed us that we could be ambitious and kind, strong and soft, fearless and authentic,’ Osbourne wrote, in part.

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker also shared a tribute to Parton despite never meeting her.

‘I never met @dollyparton but my gosh, did I love her. I don’t think any of us had to know her to love her. One of the greatest this country ever produced. Legend. For real. Forever.

‘And always advocating for those she knew and understood needed a champion. What a loss. But aren’t we so lucky, so fortunate for the endless gifts she shared,’ Parker posted.

She was perhaps best known for her hits Jolene and 9 to 5

The fourth of 12 children, Parton was born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, on January 19, 1946.

She and her siblings, Willadeene, David Wilburn, Coy Denver, Bobby Lee, Stella Mae, Cassie Nan, Randle Huston ‘Randy,’ Larry Gerald, twins Floyd and Freida Estelle and Rachel Ann, were raised in the Great Smoky Mountains where they slept on beds made of straw and lived with no running water, gas or electricity.

After developing a love of music at an early age, Parton sang frequently on the local radio and made television appearances in East Tennessee as a child before releasing her first single, Puppy Love, at the age of 13.

She then went on to enjoy an illustrious music career that spanned an incredible six decades and was arguably best known for her hits Jolene and 9 to 5.
