Memphis Mom Backs Trump Crime Push as DA Fights Task Force Oversight

0

For a Memphis mother, President Donald Trump’s federal crime crackdown has delivered something years of appeals to local officials did not: quiet streets and the freedom for her children to play outdoors.

“For once, I’m walking to my mailbox and it’s quiet,” Dalisia Ballinger told News Media. “I’m hearing the birds chirp. I’m hearing the birds sing. I’m seeing children play in the middle of the street. I’m seeing fathers playing football.”

Ballinger, a former journalist and survivor of violent crime, has become one of the Memphis Safe Task Force’s most vocal backers as the federal operation reaches its first year in the city.

Her support has also placed her in the middle of an escalating dispute with Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, a Democrat. Mulroy is challenging two recently enacted state oversight laws in court, prompting a petition that calls on him to drop the lawsuit and publicly explain how his office is processing cases stemming from the task force.

“Public safety should not be up for debate,” Ballinger said. “I don’t care if you are a Republican. I don’t care if you are a Democrat.”

Trump launched the multi-agency Memphis crime initiative via a presidential memorandum on Sept. 15, 2025. The order directed federal, state and local agencies to work together in combating violent and street crime across Memphis. The U.S. Marshals Service leads the task force, which also includes activated Tennessee National Guard personnel.

According to the White House, which released an update Tuesday, the operation had resulted in 12,747 arrests by Sept. 15. Those totals included 131 homicide arrests, 1,276 firearms-related arrests and 1,408 arrests involving known gang members.

The administration said the Memphis Safe Task Force also removed 2,160 illegal firearms from the streets and helped locate 189 missing children.

Overall crime in Memphis fell nearly 36% compared with the previous year, while murders dropped 36%, robberies fell 42% and vehicle thefts plunged 57%, according to figures released by the White House. City data had already shown crime falling before the task force arrived, and the statistics do not establish how much of the decline resulted directly from the federal surge.

“That era is over. President Trump rejected the excuses, restored law and order, and once again proved that decline is a choice,” the White House said.

FBI REPORTS LARGEST DROP IN VIOLENT CRIME AND MURDER SINCE 1937 AS HOMICIDES FALL MORE THAN 18%

Ballinger said the change became personal when her children could play outdoors without the constant fear that had gripped her neighborhood.

She recalled a shooting four houses away in which she said roughly 30 gunshots struck a home occupied by a grandmother and her grandchildren. The family never returned, she said, leaving the property overtaken by grass and weeds.

“We’ve been begging for years for our local leaders for assistance and for help,” Ballinger said. “My children deserve peace, and with the Memphis Safe Task Force being here, we’ve finally been able to get that peace.”

Now, she and other supporters argue the operation’s arrests mean little if prosecutors later reduce or dismiss cases without explaining why.

A Change.org petition titled “Stop Memphis DA From Protecting Criminals” had gathered nearly 10,000 verified signatures Wednesday.

The petition calls on Mulroy to drop a May lawsuit challenging the Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act and a separate law that authorizes the Tennessee attorney general to audit his office’s decisions in task force cases.

The accountability law requires Mulroy’s office to submit a report every 10 business days when it settles or dismisses a charge arising from the task force. The second law allows the state attorney general to review prosecutorial decisions in those cases and ask the Tennessee Supreme Court to appoint a temporary prosecutor.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy sits for a recorded discussion

Mulroy argues that both laws unconstitutionally single out Shelby County, intrude on the discretion of a locally elected prosecutor and burden his staff with duplicative reporting. His office said it already reports case outcomes under existing Tennessee law.

“These bills target Shelby County unfairly and infringe on the rights of Shelby County voters,” Mulroy said when the lawsuit was filed. He has characterized the dispute as a battle over whether Shelby County voters or state officials in Nashville control the district attorney’s office.

Petition supporters see the lawsuit differently.

“Thanks to President Trump, the Memphis Safe Task Force has delivered more for this city in one year than anyone thought possible,” Ballinger, one of the petition’s leading voices, said in a statement. “While federal, state, and local agents risk their lives taking criminals off our streets, DA Mulroy is fighting in court to hide how his office is undermining this task force.”

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Tennessee state Sen. Brent Taylor previously pressed Mulroy for details after his office reported that 430 of 514 felony cases resolved in December 2025 ended without prison time and that 166 of the cases were categorized as violent. The lawmakers said the figures left unanswered how many defendants in violent cases received no prison sentence. Mulroy has accused his Republican critics of distorting crime data for political purposes.

Ballinger rejected the claim that the petition is merely a partisan campaign against a Democratic prosecutor.

“We have children. We have regular people that might not even be into politics,” she said. “We deserve peace. Whether it’s on the East Coast, the West Coast or South, we all deserve peace.”

Memphis Police on patrol

The task force has also drawn fierce opposition. The ACLU of Tennessee and several Memphis residents have accused agents of aggressive policing and retaliation against people who record law enforcement.

Four residents filed a federal lawsuit this year alleging harassment, unlawful arrests and physical mistreatment while exercising their First Amendment rights.

The allegations have not been proven in court, while task force supporters point to thousands of arrests and sharply falling crime numbers as evidence the operation is working.

Ballinger said legitimate complaints should be reviewed, but she does not believe they justify dismantling an operation she credits with making her neighborhood livable again.

“I’m all for fairness, and I’m all for law and order,” she said. “If we need to go back to the table [and] restructure so that people can feel safe, we can definitely put that on the board.”

For Ballinger, the anniversary is measured less by government statistics than by what she can see and hear beyond her front door.

“It was noticeably enough to where it’s like, ‘Wow, there’s kids actually outside playing,’” she said.

Macklemore’s Alleged ‘Anti-Semitic Outfit’ Sparks Fresh Backlash

0

Pro-Palestine rapper Macklemore is facing renewed outrage after photos resurfaced showing him in what critics described as an “antisemitic Jewish costume,” as criticism of Ed Sheeran grows following the rapper’s removal from his tour.

Climate campaigner Greta Thunberg has also entered the dispute, arguing that Sheeran is “not the victim” in the escalating controversy.

Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, was removed from Sheeran’s tour after making a politically charged speech backing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank during shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5.

In an Instagram statement issued after his departure was confirmed, the rapper said Sheeran had told him that billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft was behind the decision. Macklemore alleged that Kraft had issued an ultimatum, warning the entire tour would be cancelled unless he was taken off the bill.

Sheeran later addressed the row in a statement of his own, telling fans that he would never publicly adopt a political position.

The fallout widened on Thursday when Irish station Classic Hits Radio said it would stop playing Sheeran’s music “for the foreseeable future,” citing listener feedback over the situation.

Further fuelling the dispute, old images have reappeared of Macklemore performing in Seattle in 2014 while wearing an oversized prosthetic nose, black beard and shaggy black wig.

The outfit drew criticism for appearing to invoke an antisemitic caricature of a Jewish man. Macklemore apologised at the time, saying there had been no malicious intent and that he had not realised the costume resembled a Jewish stereotype.

People online have accused Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian activism of being part of something more sinister, pointing to his controversial costume and a circulating image that appears to show him making a Nazi salute while dressed in it.

He has not replied to the claims made about the image, and many online say it was a photo taken mid-dance that has been misconstrued.

Prominent Israeli activist Hen Mazzig wrote on X: ‘Claiming ignorance about an obviously offensive costume isn’t an apology. It’s gaslighting the Jewish community about our pain. 12 years passed, yet Macklemore never learned how to listen to the people he harms.’

Rachel Moiselle, a Jewish activist from Ireland added: ‘Ask yourself this: would you tolerate someone who did Blackface this way and give him every benefit of the doubt while the Black community are telling you he is racist? No? Then why are your standards different for Jews?

‘I don’t think anyone should be de-platformed for their political beliefs. Separately, I do believe Macklemore is an antisemite and Jews who don’t want to see an antisemite at an Ed Sheeran concert shouldn’t be scoffed at, even if we may disagree about him being de-platformed.’

Talk show host Howard Feldman wrote: ‘Whatever moral high ground Macklemore tries to take, there will always be this photo to remind us what really motivates him.’

Meanwhile, Greta Thunberg, a staunch pro-Palestine activist who was detained twice after travelling on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, has publicly backed Sheeran’s ‘cancellation’, criticising him in a statement shared online.

Taking to her Instagram on Tuesday, Thunberg said: ‘We are witnessing one of the biggest artists in the world being cancelled because they tried to “both sides” Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.

‘This is a clear and undeniable sign that the global consciousness has shifted. The normalisation of an apartheid state, and the attempts to sanitise or justify its actions, will no longer be tolerated. Ed, there is only one victim here: the Palestinian people.’

After the news of Macklemore’s departure, all of Sheeran’s remaining support acts also stepped away from the tour.

American singer Finneas wrote: ‘Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran. I stand with Palestine and its people.’

Irish performer Aaron Rowe took a strong stance as he wrote: ‘Ed has been a friend to me and has changed my life. I could never thank him enough for this. But as Irish people, we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation.’

He continued by saying he ‘cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up’.

Danish band Lukas Graham said: ‘We should be able to speak about war, about civilians being killed, about children who deserve to grow up. Wherever they live. Whatever flag flies over them.’

Irish band Beoga, who joined Sheeran for eight songs including Galway Girl, also revealed that they are removing themselves from the tour.

They wrote: ‘We have been friends with Ed for over ten years now and will continue to be.

‘Playing to those crowds every night is the stuff of dreams but to play in venues that silence anyone advocating for a Free Palestine is simply not an option for us.’

Beoga added that Macklemore had been silenced by ‘Zionist lobbies’ and that the group believed in ‘dialogue as a means of progressing the plight of the Palestinian people’.

Sheeran lost more than 200,000 Instagram followers in 24 hours after fans criticised him for dropping Macklemore.

In a statement on Instagram, Sheeran addressed the controversy, writing: ‘I have always used my platform and music to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together and this won’t ever change.

‘Those who have been to one of my shows will know that they are about unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome.’

He added: ‘I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care.

‘There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum.’

He added that although he respects Macklemore’s ‘strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes’, there are different approaches to advocating for peace.

On Thursday morning, Irish radio station Classic Hits Radio announced it would be removing Sheeran’s music from its playlist ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Dave Kelly, Group Programme Director at Bay Broadcasting, said the move had been ‘carefully considered’ and was ‘not intended as a personal judgement on Ed Sheeran’.

He said: ‘We acknowledge his own explanation of the circumstances surrounding recent events.

‘As an independent Irish-owned radio station, however, we believe it is important to listen to our audience and to stand alongside Irish artists who have made what is undoubtedly a significant professional decision based on their own convictions.’

The uproar comes after the UK last week imposed sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, sparking a furious response from Israel.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the measures would target ‘illegal settlements and settlement expansion’, adding that there had been ‘ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists’.

It followed growing pressure for action to curb violence in the West Bank, amid reports of some 1,400 attacks by Israeli settlers this year – an average of over six incidents a day.

The British sanctions will ban settlement goods but also act against businesses and individuals providing services for settlement expansion.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded by accusing Miliband of spreading an ‘outrageous lie’.

He later announced counter-measures, including shutting the UK’s consulate in East Jerusalem.

But the UK was supported by France and Canada, who announced plans for trade bans on settlement goods, as well as nine other European countries who backed similar measures.

Macklemore claimed that his long-term friend Sheeran had told him that Kraft personally called the singer to inform him that the rapper would not be allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium

The 12 countries issued a joint statement warning the Israeli government’s actions in the West Bank are threatening the two-state solution.

The measures mark a sharp shift in Britain’s stance on Israeli settlements under new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, representing the most significant attempt in many years – from a close Israeli ally – to use economic power to force change in the occupied West Bank.

The Trump administration is taking a different stance, amid reports that it plans to sell to Israel a munitions package worth $2.8billion, which will include tens of thousands of highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs.

The package, which was reported earlier by the Washington Post, includes 20,000 MK 84s and 20,000 BLU-117s, according to anonymous officials.

US public support for Israel has fallen since the Gaza war began in 2023, particularly among Democrats.

A June Quinnipiac University poll found 48 per cent of voters and 66 per cent of Democrats believe the United States is too supportive of Israel, up from 16 per cent and 20 per cent when the question was first asked in 2017.

While the heaviest fighting has subsided since a ceasefire took hold in October, Israeli airstrikes have killed 1,369 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, does not distinguish between civilians and militants.

Prince Harry Says He Was Aware of Uncle Earl Spencer’s Book

0

Prince Harry knew about Earl Spencer’s forthcoming memoir on Diana after discussing the book with his uncle during a visit to Althorp with Meghan two months ago, it emerged today.

A bitter row has erupted between the King and Princess Diana’s brother following Spencer’s claim that Charles said Diana would soon be ‘forgotten’ in the days after her death in 1997.

The Daily Mail understands that Harry was alerted in advance to the explosive memoir. The first extract from the book is due to be published on the Daily Mail website and app at 5pm today.

However, a source close to the Duke of Sussex said he has not read it.

Harry and Charles Spencer are said to have discussed the book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, during the Duke’s stay at Althorp in July.

During that trip, Harry made an emotional visit to the grave of Diana, Princess of Wales, with Meghan, Archie and Lilibet at the Northamptonshire estate where she grew up. Meghan later shared an Instagram image of their poignant walk to Diana’s final resting place, with the children carrying bouquets of flowers.

The King today found himself in conflict with Earl Spencer over the bombshell allegation that Charles told him, during a heated telephone call shortly after Diana’s death: ‘Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.’

Royal aides responded sharply, suggesting that grief can ‘cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory’, while experts said the monarch was apoplectic with fury over the accusation.

The Daily Mail’s revelations have divided opinion, with rival camps lining up behind either side.

Last night, one senior establishment figure — a household name — told friends that Earl Spencer ‘should be horse-whipped across town’.

Buckingham Palace has issued an extraordinary statement in response while friends of the King have insisted it is ‘just not in the King’s nature’ and that he would not have used ‘this kind of language’ about Diana.

The King’s anger and an unprecedented slap-down by Buckingham Palace came after the Daily Mail revealed the first details from his searing new memoir.

ITV royal editor Chris Ship said he was ‘not expecting’ the Palace to respond, but that ‘what became very clear from seeing that statement is they’re not going to take this one lying down’.

Mr Ship revealed he had spoken to a Palace source who referred to a ‘war’.

‘I know that Harry’s aware of what his uncle has written in this book. And we also know that Harry stayed with Charles Spencer when he was over in the summer and had a big family gathering,’ he said.

‘They must have spoken about the fact this was going to come out and the things that he was going to say about his father.’

However, other sources claimed that Harry, William and the Palace were not informed about the contents of his memoir because security around the final manuscript was so tight.

The King’s remarkable statement disputing Earl Spencer’s claims reveals the depth of the his anger, especially because the Palace ignored Prince Harry’s book Spare, according to experts.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt said Charles, who is meeting bosses from some of the world’s leading AI developers in Scotland today, is ‘clearly absolutely incandescent’ over the allegations he said Diana would be quickly forgotten.

Former BBC royal reporter Jennie Bond said: ‘It is incredibly sad and it is, it seems to me, pure war now. We lived through the war of the Waleses – I did – back in the 90s between Charles and Diana.

‘Now we have another war between Diana’s brother and the King and I do not know what purpose it serves. It can only go to hurt, I think, William and Harry who love their father and probably undoubtedly love their uncle as well. To see the family torn apart by this serves no purpose.’

Editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine Ingrid Seward said: ‘I think Diana would be horrified that her brother has revealed this remark by Charles.

‘When I last met her, six weeks before her death, she was adamant that she and Charles really loved each other. It was so important to her that their children knew that.

‘So she would be horrified that he has shared a comment that could appear to show so much malice. I am sure it was not meant like that. But at the time, the Spencers and the Royal Family were at loggerheads.’

Meanwhile Julian Payne, the King’s communications secretary between 2016 and 2021, said the ‘highly unusual’ statement from the Palace displayed the ‘strength of feeling that there must have been for them to feel that they needed to go out there and correct it’.

He said: ‘I just don’t recognise the way the King is characterised in those remarks.’

In Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the earl tells how in 1997 he clashed with Charles over the idea of Princes William and Harry walking in their mother’s funeral procession.

Earl Spencer, 62, says he has written the memoir to correct ‘untruths’ told about his older sister. The astonishing account of the King’s alleged outburst, almost 30 years ago, is described by the earl over several pages.

He says that one of Queen Elizabeth’s most senior aides had told him, in the days before the funeral, that William and Harry would take part in the procession, which is when he responded that this was not what his sister would have wanted and was ‘not going to happen’.

Minutes later, he recalls, he received a phone call from Prince Charles who questioned the Spencer family’s sense of duty and insisted that, 18 years earlier, he had walked in the funeral procession of Lord Mountbatten, his great-uncle.

The memoir describes how Charles ‘went nuts’ after the earl pointed out that the prince had been 30 at the time of Lord Mountbatten’s funeral in 1979.

In one of the book’s most extraordinary passages, Earl Spencer writes: ‘Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped.

‘I assumed the pause signalled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, “we’ll forget her soon enough!”.’

Earl Spencer said that he was ‘so stunned’ by the alleged remarks that he took a few seconds to reply.

‘”I can’t believe you just said that,” I said flatly, before hanging up,’ he writes.

Last night Buckingham Palace took the highly unusual step of issuing a withering put-down to the incendiary claims about the King.

A Royal spokesman said: ‘While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.’

The caustic response is being compared to the late Queen Elizabeth’s celebrated remark that ‘recollections may vary’ about Harry and Meghan’s outlandish claims in their Oprah Winfrey interview attacking the Royal Family.

A source close to the King said the comment he is alleged to have made about Diana was ‘just not in his nature and it certainly wasn’t in his nature at that time, when he was a man absolutely grief-stricken’.

They pointed out that the then Prince of Wales was the person who overruled Royal protocol to insist that Diana should have a full state-style ceremonial funeral.

The rebuke was issued by the palace shortly after the Mail revealed claims made by Earl Spencer in his book.

Julian Payne, the King’s former communications secretary between 2016 and 2021, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘I personally was working for him during the 20th anniversary of the late princess’s death in 2017 and naturally we ended up discussing her several times during that summer because the media interest was so intense.

‘What I remember was he was very clear that there was never to be any criticism, never to be any pushback on the narratives that were usually highly critical of him – but he was absolutely emphatic that we were to respect her memory and not undermine it in any way.

‘So it seems to me very odd that in the moment itself with the grief of his family and his own shock that he would choose that moment to use those words. It’s just not language that I recognise.’

BBC royal correspondent Sean Coughlan said the Palace see the allegation against Charles as ‘being entirely out of character for a man with a deeply compassionate nature, who at the time was dealing with his own grief and that of their two sons’.

Royal expert Phil Dampier described the palace statement as ‘extraordinary’, adding: ‘The days of never complain never explain have gone… not surprisingly.’

Sky News royal correspondent Laura Bundock said the Palace statement was a ‘really remarkable intervention’ and a ‘very robust response’ which is ‘beyond punchy’.

She added: ‘It is, as they say very unusual for them to make any comment about a book. They normally do not comment on books.’

Ms Bundock also pointed out that the palace did not respond to Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, but the new book is a ‘very different situation’.

She continued: ‘At this point they feel they simply cannot stay silent given who has written the book, Diana’s brother, given the subject of the book, Diana herself, and given the nature of the allegations made.’

Diana’s death on August 31, 1997, aged 36, sparked a global outpouring of grief.

On September 6, 1997, six days after Diana’s death, Earl Spencer delivered a defiant eulogy at her funeral that was later named one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century.

His raw oration in Westminster Abbey was delivered after he walked alongside William and Harry, as well as Prince Charles and Prince Philip, behind Diana’s coffin in a funeral procession through central London.

The new book includes a string of further extraordinary claims about Diana’s failed marriage to Charles and the tumultuous aftermath of her tragic death in a car crash in Paris.

The revelations are set to plunge Buckingham Palace into a fresh storm just weeks after the return of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children to the UK from California.

Described as ‘historic’, Swan Song is due to be published worldwide next Tuesday – in the UK by Penguin Michael Joseph, a division of Penguin Random House.

Police in the Netherlands are still investigating what publishing sources say is the ‘extremely suspicious’ overnight theft of four copies of the book from the back of a parked lorry earlier this week.

Today, several senior Royal Family members will be seen in public carrying out official engagements.

Charles is set to address bosses from some of the world’s leading AI developers – Nvidia, Anthropic and OpenAI – about the future of artificial intelligence.

He is expected to tell a summit at Dumfries House in Scotland that the new technology should be in the ‘service of humanity, community and the natural world’.

Diana’s son William and his wife Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales who also hold the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, are set to make their first official visit to Isle of Bute.

The day is to include visiting their namesake town of Rothesay and follows their visits to the Isles of Mull and Iona last year.

The Duke of Sussex is also expected to make his first public appearance since returning to the UK – appearing at the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards ceremony in London.

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s visit to Zambia, to try to celebrate the relationship between Zambia and the UK, is among other royal engagements.

Elsewhere, Princess Anne will attend the opening of a new History Centre at the German Military Cemetery in Staffordshire.

Ogee Lid Sculpt Blends Eyeshadow With Skincare Benefits

0

Ogee is inviting beauty fans to rethink the role of eyeshadow. With its new Lid Sculpt Liquid Eyeshadow, the brand is positioning eye color as more than a simple wash of pigment.

Ogee’s newest makeup launch, Lid Sculpt Liquid Eyeshadow, aims to carve out a fresh space in the eye makeup category by pairing bold color payoff with skincare-minded benefits. The formula is designed to bridge cosmetics and care, helping eyelids appear smoother and more lifted while providing vibrant color that resists creasing throughout the day.

At the center of the Ogee Lid Sculpt Liquid Eyeshadow formula is a skincare-infused liquid-to-powder texture that glides on with ease before drying down quickly to a barely-there finish. It delivers rich, saturated color without the weight often associated with traditional powder shadows. Once set, the shadow is intended to stay put for up to 12 hours, offering a crease-resistant, budge-proof option for rushed mornings and all-day wear alike.

Ogee

Its liquid-to-powder formula is infused with skincare-focused ingredients, allowing it to apply smoothly and transform into a lightweight finish. The payoff is intense metallic color that feels comfortable rather than heavy on the lids.

The formula features essence of white flowers, an ingredient Ogee says helps improve the visible smoothness and lifted appearance of the eyelid area. The brand notes that its lifting claim stems from an in-vitro study of the key ingredient. Clinically supported for 12-hour wear, Lid Sculpt Liquid Eyeshadow is made to work across a range of eye shapes, skin textures, and ages.

A metallic shade for every mood

Ogee is releasing Lid Sculpt in 10 metallic eyeshadow shades, balancing everyday neutrals with more expressive, light-catching hues:

  • Rose Gold – a soft, luminous pink metallic
  • Nickel – a cool-toned metallic
  • Obsidian – a deep, dramatic shade
  • Jade – a jewel-toned green
  • Amethyst – a vibrant purple
  • Lapis – a striking blue
  • Whether swept on as a sheer wash or built up for more intensity, the quick-setting formula is designed to make application simple. The key is speed: prep the eye area with a favorite eye cream or balm, then sweep a light layer of Lid Sculpt onto the lids and blend immediately.

Pope Leo XIV Receives Symbolic Sphere in AI Dignity Push

    0

A charity has presented Pope Leo XIV with a one-of-a-kind artwork as part of its campaign to protect human dignity and define “what should stay human in the age of AI,” an official told News Media.

Images released by Saint Peter for Humanity show the pope accepting the “Sphere of Humanity,” a green Murano glass sculpture featuring handwritten excerpts from his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. The passages address human dignity, vulnerability, solidarity, conscience and the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence. The presentation took place during the pope’s General Audience in early September.

The gift was presented as Saint Peter for Humanity prepared to convene 70 leaders in New York City next week to begin drafting the Codex Humanitatis. The independent initiative draws inspiration from Pope Leo XIV’s call to defend human dignity as AI becomes more powerful and more influential in daily life.

“We recognize the benefits of AI. We just believe, again, that there is another force that should belong to that conversation, and that other force is humanity,” Olivier Francois, the organization’s president and chairman, told News Media. “The Codex Humanitatis, which is our initiative, starts from that simple idea. AI should serve people, protect human dignity, expand human potential and advance the common good.”

“So what are we going to do in New York? We are going to gather 70 Nobel laureates, artists, thinkers, philanthropists, technology and AI experts — obviously, that’s important — and we will ask them maybe the hardest question of our times: As artificial intelligence grows even more powerful, what must remain human?” Francois said. “Before we hand over to machines, we should be clear about what we value most in ourselves. We will try to define what being human means and what should stay human in the age of AI. That is a little bit of the initiative we shared with Pope Leo while presenting the sphere and this symbolic gift.”

Based on an original design by Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti, the sphere contains four handwritten selections from Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas. Among them is the passage: “In the era of artificial intelligence, when human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain profoundly human.”

The pope wrote in the encyclical released in May, “Each generation inherits the task of shaping its own era, of guiding history to become a place where the dignity of every person is safeguarded, justice is promoted and fraternity is made possible,” while warning that “every era also runs the risk of creating an inhumane and more unjust world.”

“For AI to respect human dignity and truly serve the common good, responsibility must be clearly defined at every stage: from those who design and develop these systems to those who use them and rely on them for concrete decisions,” the pope wrote. “In many cases, however, the internal processes leading to a result remain opaque, making it harder to assign responsibility and correct errors. This is where accountability becomes crucial: the possibility of identifying who must ‘account’ for decisions, justify them, monitor them and, when necessary, challenge them and remedy any harm caused.”

“Calling for prudence, rigorous evaluation and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI does not mean opposing progress; instead, it is an exercise of responsible care for the human family. This need is all the more urgent given the frequent imbalance between the speed of technological growth and the slower development of awareness, norms, safeguards and institutions capable of governing its effects,” the pope also said. “It is not enough to invoke ethics in the abstract; robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility are required. Otherwise, change will be governed only by technocratic thinking and presented as necessary and inevitable, ultimately imposing rules shaped by those who control data, infrastructure and computing power.”

Saint Peter for Humanity said in a statement about its New York gathering, “Working across ten groups, participants will develop a first draft of the Codex focused on issues including the future of work, accountability, information integrity, human oversight and the protection of children and families.”

“The draft will then enter a global consultation process before being refined into a final set of principles. Saint Peter for Humanity plans to engage governments, companies and institutions in translating those principles into practice, including through engagement at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos,” the nonprofit added.

Dry, Breezy Thursday Gives Way to Increasing Weekend Storm Threat

    0

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is getting a short-lived window of drier, less humid weather, offering a good opportunity to spend time outside before a wetter pattern takes hold this weekend. While an isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out today, rain coverage will be much lower than usual.

    Thursday & Friday

Breezy conditions will continue through the next several days, as northeast winds build to 15 to 20 mph this afternoon. Wind gusts may reach 25 to 30 mph at times.

An influx of drier air will limit shower activity across the region, keeping rain chances between 20% and 30% for most Central Florida communities.

Afternoon highs will reach the mid to upper 80s, with a modest dip in humidity for some locations near and northwest of Interstate 4. Dew points in those areas could fall into the upper 60s, making conditions feel a bit more comfortable.

Beachgoers should remain cautious despite the sunnier break. A high risk of dangerous, potentially life-threatening rip currents remains in effect, while rough surf and hazardous boating conditions continue along the coast.

    Weekend

The Central Florida weather forecast turns more unsettled as the weekend approaches, with deeper moisture returning and an upper-level low pressure system crossing the state.

That setup is expected to bring scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms each day, pushing rain chances up to 70% to 80%.

Some storms could become strong, producing frequent lightning, wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph and localized rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches. Minor flooding may develop in areas that see multiple rounds of heavy rain.

Temperatures will stay close to normal for this time of year, with daytime highs in the upper 80s and overnight lows in the 70s.

Canada PM Takes Swipe at Trump in European Parliament Speech

    0

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a pointed message to Donald Trump on Thursday, telling European lawmakers he supports Canada becoming an associate member of the European Union.

Carney addressed the European Parliament after Trump warned that permitting Canada to gain associate EU membership could amount to a “hostile act.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed on Wednesday that Canada become the EU’s first associate member, an unprecedented offer that comes as Trump’s threats push Ottawa into closer alignment with Europe.

In Strasbourg, Carney called on the European Union and Canada to deepen their partnership, arguing that the two sides share fundamental values and are “stronger together.”

“We are not fair-weather allies. We do not pursue zero-sum deals. We hold common values for which we have always fought, and in whose defence we must always remain vigilant,” Carney said.

“Canada and Europe are each strong. Europe and Canada are stronger together.”

Trump, speaking from Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, said he could answer the proposed Canada-EU arrangement by imposing additional tariffs on the bloc.

The US president tied his latest tariff warning to what he described as the “intention” of European leaders. “If it’s a good intention, that’s fine. If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe,” Trump said.

Carney addressed the European Parliament after Trump suggested that granting Canada associate EU membership could be a “hostile act.”

Speaking on Wednesday from Charlotte, North Carolina, Trump threatened to respond to the proposed move by imposing more tariffs on the bloc

Speaking in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, Trump threatened further tariffs on the European Union in response to the proposed move.

He also suggested the US could cut off trade with Europe in certain areas.

Trump called the prospect of Canada joining the EU ‘laughable’ and called America’s neighbour a ‘terrible trade partner.’

Carney said he was proposing deeper Canada-Europe integration across trade, defense, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy, space, research and financial services to make both sides less vulnerable to economic and geopolitical pressure.

‘I am not proposing a third bloc in order to become a great-power rival – only with better manners,’ he said. ‘We do not seek power to dominate others.’

Carney said the goal instead is to build Canada’s resilience so that no country can control its markets, undermine its sovereignty or dictate its choices.

For generations, Canada built its economy around integration with the United States.

Trump’s tariffs, demands for economic concessions and repeated talk of making Canada the 51st state are now driving Ottawa to reduce that dependence and seek a deeper economic, security and political relationship across the Atlantic.

Von der Leyen proposed making Canada the EU’s first associate member – a status that does not currently exist in the bloc’s treaties and would have to be created.

She said Europe wants to take its relationship with Canada to ‘the highest level possible.’

Carney, sitting in the front row of the European Parliament chamber, nodded and rose to embrace von der Leyen as lawmakers gave the proposal a standing ovation.

Von der Leyen said Canada and the EU should move beyond their existing free trade agreement and create an ‘Alliance for the Future’ encompassing a ‘common prosperity and economic security space.’

Carney will host EU leaders for a Canada-EU summit in Montreal on Oct. 29-30, where the two sides are expected to discuss the proposed new relationship in more detail.

Canada sends roughly 70 per cent of its exports to the United States, making it highly exposed to Trump’s tariffs.

Ottawa has retaliated and rejected demands Carney says threaten Canadian sovereignty.

Europe took a different path, shelving retaliation and accepting tariffs of up to 15 per cent on most EU exports to the US.

Carney has repeatedly urged middle powers to resist that kind of economic coercion.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, he warned that when countries negotiate alone with a dominant power, ‘we negotiate from weakness. We accept what is offered.’

Trump rebuked him the next day, and Thursday’s speech could further strain the relationship.

Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s ambassador-designate to the EU, said Wednesday that Canada is not seeking full EU membership because that would require surrendering some sovereignty.

Instead, Ottawa wants ‘to get as close as we possibly can’ to Europe while increasing Canada’s independence.

Exactly what associate membership would mean remains to be negotiated.

Canada has already taken a major step toward European integration. This year it became the first non-European country to join the EU’s 150-billion-euro ($173-billion) SAFE defense procurement program, giving Canadian companies access to joint procurement as Europe increases defense spending.

The two sides have also discussed closer cooperation on energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and digital trade.

Baby Born at Harry Potter Screening Has Cineworld on Birth Certificate

    0

A baby delivered during a screening of Harry Potter has Cineworld listed on her birth certificate after arriving midway through the film.

Molly Connah, 32, was one day overdue when she visited the Cineworld in Broughton, Flintshire, with her parents and her nine-year-old son, Alfie, to watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

But about 40 to 45 minutes into the Harry Potter screening, Ms Connah began experiencing labour pains.

Cineworld manager Michelle McClean and team leader Leah Prytherch were among the staff who stepped in to help. Employees called 999 and collected towels and sheets to give Ms Connah privacy from cinema-goers passing through the venue.

Recalling the dramatic birth, Ms Connah said: ‘I said to my mum, “I feel like I need to push,” and she said, “You can’t”.’

‘I said, “I can’t, I need to. I’ve got to.” Two pushes and my daughter was out.’

She gave birth to Elsie Lamb at 4.57pm.

With no medical professionals present when Elsie was born, Ms Connah’s mother lifted her newborn granddaughter and placed her on her mother’s chest.

A rapid response paramedic arrived just moments later.

Ms Connah said: ‘She came running in and said, “Is everything all right?”

‘My mum said, “She’s had the baby,” and she went, “What?” and came running in.’

The paramedic checked both Ms Connah and Elsie before two ambulances were sent to Cineworld.

She called her partner, Scott, who had been asleep ahead of a night shift, and asked him to come and collect her.

He arrived seconds after his daughter had been born, having tried to call Ms Connah three times while she was giving birth.

Ms Connah said the whole family were in ‘complete utter shock’ at the 7lb surprise on her trip.

‘You don’t expect it in a million years,’ Ms Connah said.

Ms Connah said that when she went to register the newborn, she was asked where the baby was born.

She said: ‘When we went to register her, they had to ask where she was born.

‘We had to say Cineworld in Broughton, and it does say on her birth certificate, Cineworld Broughton.’

Ms Connah said: ‘The staff at Cineworld and Starbucks were absolutely amazing.

‘They shielded me with towels and sheets so no one could see. They were absolutely amazing.’

She had attended a midwife appointment for a sweep at around 1.20pm that afternoon, before heading to the cinema with her parents and son Alfie.

She said: ‘I can remember the scene I was watching when I walked out. It was when Hagrid and Harry are buying his stuff to go to Hogwarts.

‘I thought something doesn’t feel right. It was getting more and more intense and I didn’t want anything to go wrong.

‘At that point I think my body just went into shock and it was pure adrenaline.’

After leaving the cinema, Ms Connah was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where she needed treatment following the unusually quick birth and was taken to theatre for stitches.

She said both she and Elsie are now doing well, with the newborn described as a ‘really contented baby’.

Ms Connah said Alfie has also embraced becoming a big brother.

She said: ‘He’s been amazing. He absolutely loves it, helping with the nappy changes, holding her, walking her and feeding her.’

The family have since returned to Cineworld to thank the staff who helped them, taking chocolates, gifts and a card.

They were also given four cinema passes after missing the end of the Harry Potter film and hope to return to finish their unusual family outing.

Report: SLOMW Star Taylor Frankie Paul Allegedly Fails Multiple Drug Tests, Loses Custody Time With Children

REPORT: SLOMW Star Taylor Frankie Paul Allegedly Failed Multiple Drug Tests, Custody Time With Kids is Reduced

    Credit: Instagram

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Taylor Frankie Paul is once again drawing attention amid her continuing custody dispute.

A new report alleges that the mother of three failed several drug tests in recent weeks, resulting in a reduction of her visitation time with her children.

According to TMZ, sources familiar with the custody matter claim Taylor failed the tests within the past 60 days. The court has reportedly limited her to a total of eight hours per week with her three children.

Under the reported arrangement, Taylor will have four hours weekly with the two children she shares with ex-husband Tate Paul — 9-year-old Indy and 6-year-old Ocean — and another four hours with her 2-year-old son, Ever, whom she shares with Dakota Mortensen.

The substances Taylor, 32, allegedly tested positive for have not been identified. One source told the outlet that one of the substances is not commonly available through a prescription.

Sources close to Taylor spoke with TMZ and did not deny the allegations. Instead, they characterized the leak as ongoing harassment and intimidation in light of the gag order issued in the custody case.

As reported in July, Tate and Dakota appeared to have aligned in their separate custody disputes with Taylor, including by using the same attorneys.

Tate is seeking sole custody of the two children he shares with Taylor. His previous request for a temporary restraining order against her was denied, though his case prompted a judge to order drug and alcohol testing for the SLOMW star.

Back then, it was required for Taylor to pass her drug tests if she hoped to regain her solo parenting rights which includes unsupervised visits.

And back in July, child services filed a petition against Taylor as they asked a court to intervene to determine that her three children had been “abused, neglected or dependent.”

Then in August, Tate petitioned the courts as he requested that they unseal Taylor’s drug tests amid their custody battle.

After a shocking video of Taylor fighting with Dakota was leaked earlier this year, during which she could be seen throwing chairs and screaming at him with her daughter nearby, Dakota was granted temporary full custody of their son as well as a temporary restraining order against her.

Back in April, Dakota and Taylor were each granted three-year mutual protective orders.
