Christa Pike remains hospitalized, unconscious and on a ventilator, after a failed execution left her with severe burns to both arms, according to her attorneys.

Her lawyers filed an emergency motion Friday asking a court to order the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve all evidence connected to the botched execution.

Pike, 50, was reportedly stuck with at least seven needles Wednesday as medical personnel tried to administer two lethal doses of pentobarbital, court documents say.

“At one point, Ms Pike herself offered guidance on where the IV team could attempt access; one needle was bent at a 90-degree angle when it was removed,” her lawyers wrote.

According to the filing, staff administered two rounds of syringes containing the execution drug. Pike could reportedly be heard crying, whimpering and breathing heavily throughout the attempt.

During the procedure, Pike said, “my arm feels like it’s about to burst open.” At another point, she asked, “does this happen like that?”

By Thursday night, she remained critically ill at a hospital in the Nashville area, where she was “intubated, on a ventilator, and remains unconscious,” her attorneys said.

Pike had spent 30 years on death row after being convicted of the 1995 murder of her Knoxville Jobs Corp classmate, Colleen Slemmer.

Her lawyers said both arms were swollen, burned and blistered when she arrived at the hospital. They compared the drug’s effect to bleach or Drano, the chemical drain cleaner used to clear clogged household pipes.

Pike’s attorneys believe complications involving the IV lines caused the pentobarbital to enter her body rather than flow into her bloodstream.

“Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms Pike’s body,” the lawyers wrote.

Rather than correcting the problem, they alleged, the execution team prepared and administered a second set of pentobarbital syringes.

Pike’s attorneys want all evidence from the failed execution preserved so they can pursue accountability and protect her legal rights.

“We are working closely with those closest to Christa to respect her wishes, safeguard her privacy and protect her rights as a patient during this extraordinarily difficult time,” said Luke Ihnen, an attorney with Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee.

“We ask that the public and the media respect that privacy as well.”

The filing also noted that Pike had previously appealed her execution, arguing it would constitute cruel and unusual punishment because of her medical and physical characteristics, including thrombocytosis, post-traumatic stress disorder and small veins.

‘Her concerns were called ‘speculation’; they were laughed off, scoffed at, and dismissed,’ the lawyers wrote.

‘In the words of one media witness: We have a lot of questions, and the Department of Correction has a lot of answers that it needs to provide to the public about what happened here. We agree.’

Pike received the death sentence in 1996 and would have been the first woman to be executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.

Instead, the case marks the second botched execution in Tennessee this year, and Governor Bill Lee halted any additional executions for the year and ordered ‘a comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred.’

The state’s execution protocol calls for a secondary set of drug syringes to be administered ‘if the inmate is not deceased’ after the first set. It does not spell out what happens if the subject is alive after the second set.

Tennessee announced in 2024 that it was switching from a three-drug series for lethal injections to the single drug pentobarbital. 

Pike and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, stabbed and beat Slemmer to death on the University of Tennessee’s Agricultural campus.

The two carved a pentagram into Slemmer’s chest, and Pike took a piece of her skull as a souvenir, according to investigators.

Shipp, who was 17 at the time of the killing, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole due to his age.

WASHINGTON — The Kennedy Center Honors will move out of the Kennedy Center this year.

The annual celebration of achievement in the performing arts is scheduled for Dec. 7 at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C., a spokesperson for the center said Friday. Officials did not immediately provide additional details or explain why the event is being relocated.

Capital One Arena, which hosts the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals, can hold about 20,000 concertgoers. That is nearly nine times the 2,347-seat capacity of the Kennedy Center Opera House, the customary home of the honors ceremony since 1978.

The Kennedy Center has been closed to the public since Sept. 15, after its board voted to shutter the complex for renovations. The decision came after a federal judge blocked the institution from adding President Trump’s name to the building without congressional approval. Congress has allocated $257 million for improvements to the 55-year-old arts center.

That same day, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the planned renovation and reconstruction — which he described as a “very large and complex job” — could not move forward until the D.C. Circuit ruled on the board’s decision to rename the center.

Trump also said that if the appeals court issued an unfavorable ruling and the U.S. Supreme Court later overturned it, “the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place.”

The Kennedy Center board had earlier pointed to the partial collapse of a ceiling in the Grand Foyer as evidence that the building required immediate repairs and should be closed.

In a draft resolution recommending a two-year shutdown for construction, a consultant and the center’s director said the main building was unsafe for continued use. They warned that keeping it open could create additional dangers for visitors and employees.

Trump hosted the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors, where actor Sylvester Stallone and country music star George Strait were among those celebrated. Within days, the center’s board of trustees announced that it had voted unanimously to place Trump’s name on the building, following months in which he had suggested the possibility.

Congress designated the performing arts complex as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy in 1964, one year after his assassination. The law specifically prohibits the board of trustees from turning the center into a memorial for another individual or adding anyone else’s name to its exterior.

The name change was challenged in court, and a judge ordered Trump’s name removed earlier this year.

The recipients of the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors will be revealed at a later date.

Attorneys for Alex Murdaugh accused prosecutors Wednesday of concealing a witness account that allegedly places a South Carolina police chief in possession of the weapons used to kill Murdaugh’s wife and son. The statement also reportedly says the chief arranged clean clothes for Murdaugh after the 2021 slayings. His lawyers are asking a judge to compel prosecutors to turn over the information.

Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of killing his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, at the family’s Moselle property in Colleton County.

The South Carolina Supreme Court later threw out those convictions, ruling that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors. Murdaugh’s retrial is set to begin April 5, 2027.

In a motion filed Wednesday, Murdaugh’s attorneys referenced media reports that a state grand jury heard allegations that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander was seen with the murder weapons soon after the June 7, 2021, killings.

“According to those reports, witnesses have testified that the Chief of Police of the Town of Yemassee, Greg Alexander, was seen with the murder weapons in the immediate aftermath of the June 7, 2021, killings, and that second Yemassee officer is under investigation for transporting and concealing weapons and clothing,” the filing says.

The motion also points to reporting by The Post and Courier, which said a Lowcountry official told South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents that Alexander “spoke of arriving early to the murder scene and talked about providing a change of clothes to Murdaugh.” The official reportedly believed the guns and clothing were taken to the police station and stored there.

The Post and Courier, however, said it was unable to independently corroborate the allegations.

During Murdaugh’s first murder trial, prosecutors argued that he used two types of weapons to kill his wife and son, then washed away evidence with a nearby water hose. They said he changed clothes, drove to his parents’ home and left the weapons there before returning a week later to dispose of them. Prosecutors had previously acknowledged that investigators never recovered the guns.

Alexander, through his attorney, Joe McCulloch, denied the accusations described in the media reports. News Media contacted Alexander and McCulloch for comment.

Murdaugh’s defense team wants the judge to order prosecutors to disclose all information they have “concerning the handling, transport, concealment, or disposal of the alleged weapons used to kill Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh.” That request includes a 2023 statement to SLED agents alleging that a Lowcountry police chief spoke about arriving early at the scene and supplying Murdaugh with a change of clothes, along with every related interview report and the testimony and exhibits presented to the state grand jury.

Murdaugh’s lawyers argued that, “if the reports are accurate,” prosecutors have withheld evidence that conflicts with the state’s own account of how the killings unfolded.

News Media has asked the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office for comment.

Four of the 11 people arrested in an Indiana police operation targeting alleged child-sex offenders are in the country illegally and come from four different nations, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Investigators said the suspects believed they were messaging underage girls online before traveling to arranged meetings for what they thought would be sexual encounters. Instead, undercover detectives were waiting for them.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued detainer requests for all four suspects.

The suspects were identified as El Hadji Babacar Ndiaye, a Senegalese national who was apprehended and released by the Biden administration after being caught at the southern border in Lukeville, Arizona, in September 2023; Lucky Philip Udoudo, a Nigerian national who entered the United States as a “gotaway” at an unknown time and location; Filomeno Ricardo Flores Marin, a Mexican national who illegally entered the country in Arizona in 2002; and David Josue Gomez-Posada, a Salvadoran national who illegally entered the United States as a juvenile in 2017.

“We are calling on Indiana to honor our detainers,” a DHS spokesperson told Fox News. “All of their claims will be heard by an immigration judge, and they will receive due process. This administration will not ignore the rule of law.”

Marin faces two sex-offense charges, along with one count each of molesting a minor and enticing a minor for indecent purposes. His record also includes a previous arrest involving stolen property. ICE arrested him on Jan. 18, 2019, while he was assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration with an operation in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was released on bond on March 7, 2019.

Udoudo is charged with child solicitation and sexual misconduct involving a minor. Gomez-Posada and Ndiaye each face a charge of child solicitation.

“Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, if you break the law, you will face the consequences. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.,” the DHS spokesperson said.

DHS also said that seven of the 10 safest cities in the United States cooperate with ICE. The agency described collaboration between federal immigration officials and local law enforcement as essential to fighting crime and taking illegal immigrants into custody.

The department pointed to about 40,000 arrests in Florida and a separate two-week operation in West Virginia that led to 650 arrests of illegal immigrants.

The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York for six games and fined him $500,000 following his arrest in an undercover prostitution investigation.

The league determined that the 46-year-old violated its Personal Conduct Policy after police caught him attempting to pay for sex at an Ohio trailer park in August. York was reportedly prepared to pay $160.

The married executive had already stayed out of the public eye while the 49ers dealt with a turbulent period involving injury-related conspiracy theories and the unexplained car crash of head coach Kyle Shanahan.

In a statement released after the NFL announced its decision, York—whose fortune is estimated at $500 million—spoke publicly for the first time since his arrest and apologized to his family, the organization and its supporters.

York said he accepted the NFL’s ruling in full and expressed deep regret to his family, the 49ers’ players, coaches and employees, as well as the team’s fans and partners.

He described his conduct as an “inexcusable mistake,” accepted full responsibility and said it did not represent his values. York added that, although he had failed to set the example he wanted for his sons, he hoped to demonstrate the importance of acknowledging mistakes and learning from them.

York also acknowledged that leading the 49ers was a privilege and said he understood that regaining the trust of those connected to the team would take time and effort.

The 49ers CEO has not made a public appearance since the incident, maintaining a low profile as the league conducted its investigation.

Under the NFL’s ruling, York is eligible to return on October 20, after San Francisco completes its Week 6 matchup with the Washington Commanders.

He could be back with the team the following week for its October 25 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Three games of his six-game suspension will already have been served by then.

Court documents obtained by The Daily Mail after York’s August arrest stated that he had “arranged to have sexual activity with the female in exchange for $140.” Investigators said he responded to an undercover advertisement posted on a prostitution website.

When York arrived at the meeting point—believed to be the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine—he encountered a law enforcement sting instead of the woman from the advertisement.

An agent from the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force arrested him after finding that York had a cellphone “used to arrange a criminal act,” according to court documents.

York, who was born in Youngstown, Ohio, roughly 20 miles from East Palestine, was initially charged with engaging in prostitution. Prosecutors later amended that charge to disorderly conduct. He also faced a charge of possessing criminal tools.

He pleaded no contest on a Monday morning and received a one-day jail sentence for both offenses, to be served concurrently. York was credited with one day already served and was ordered to pay a $1,150 fine.

Records also show that York had a cellphone returned to him and that $160 that was seized was to be given to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of the plea agreement. He also completed an online course.

It comes after York filed for divorce from his wife, Danielle, back in May and cited irreconcilable differences. 

The York family took control of the San Francisco 49ers organization back in 2000, with Jed first working under his father John in the early 2000s. 

He took over the running of day-to-day activities in 2008 when he became CEO, and in 2024 he acquired enough of his mother’s stake to become majority owner.

York and 49ers Enterprises also co-own Premier League soccer team Leeds United, and Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC. 

A nurse who dedicated more than 20 years to caring for others was among three people killed when a medical helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Catalina Island.

Jessica Devries, 48, was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as one of the victims in the Sept. 30 crash. The REACH Air Medical Services helicopter went down near the Pebbly Beach helipad, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Devries was one of five people aboard the aircraft when the crash was reported shortly after 7:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Images shared online showed Devries smiling with friends and colleagues, reflecting the enthusiasm she brought to her work caring for patients.

Following news of her death, friends and former co-workers flooded social media with tributes describing her as compassionate, joyful and deeply devoted to those around her.

“Wow I just found out the nurse in the helicopter was one of my co-workers at RCRMC. County Hospital in Moreno Valley,” one person wrote.

“She was such a happy person, a good soul. So sorry she has passed. Jessica Devires R. N.  My condolences to her son and family.”

“My heart is so heavy hearing about this tragic loss. I had the privilege of being a friend of Jessica’s, she was truly a wonderful person and I feel fortunate that we crossed paths,” another person wrote.

“Knowing how much of her life was devoted to helping others makes this loss especially heartbreaking. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family, friends, her REACH family, and everyone who loved and worked alongside her.”

Two other people died in the crash, while two survived with injuries. The helicopter had been transporting 45-year-old Catalina Hernandez, who was experiencing an allergic reaction after eating something, her family said.

Hernandez was also killed. Police divers recovered her body from the Pacific Ocean on Friday, officials said.

Her son was aboard the helicopter and survived with injuries. The other injured passenger was a male medic, and both were being treated at a hospital, NBC reported.

A male pilot was also killed. Authorities have not yet released his name.

The Oceanside police and fire departments, where the medical crew was based, released a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families.

“For more than a decade, REACH 16 has been based at the Oceanside Fire Department Training Center,” the departments said in a social media post.

“While no Oceanside Fire or Police personnel were aboard the aircraft, REACH crews have shared our facilities, trained alongside our first responders, and served communities throughout our region for years. They are part of our public safety family, and this loss is felt deeply here in Oceanside.”

“Our hearts are with everyone affected by this tragedy and with the entire REACH community during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with the REACH family and all those impacted,” the statement concluded. 

A memorial service was held on Catalina Island to remember the victims.

Investigators have not determined what caused the helicopter to crash. The incident remains under investigation.

The Catalina Island crash occurred only weeks after a news helicopter went down in Chatsworth while covering a bus collision, killing three people, including a reporter, a pilot and a bystander.
