Scorching Heatwave Persists: Urgent Updates on Extreme Sunday Temperatures

Heat advisories issued as “feels like” temps will hover around 108-110 degrees.

Heat advisories issued as dangerous heat continues across Central Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Sunday

Central Florida continues to experience intense heat, as heat advisories extend through Sunday due to persistent high pressure over the Deep South. This weather pattern drives temperatures into the upper 90s, with heat indices ranging between 108 and 112ºF. Rain remains scarce, with only a 20% chance of afternoon showers. Some isolated rain can be expected between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., though most areas will remain dry.

Early Next Week

The beginning of the week brings no relief from the heat, with the high-pressure system continuing to dominate Central Florida’s weather. High temperatures will remain in the upper 90s, and rain chances are minimal, at only 20-30%.

Mid-Week

Rain chances begin to creep up by mid-week as a weak upper level low develops over Florida and pushes into the western Gulf. This will help to break up the ridge and provide a little more moisture and lift in our atmosphere to get showers and storms going. Rain chances raise to 40-50% with highs slightly lowering into the mid 90s for the second half of the week.

Man Attempts Deadly Shooting on Father’s Girlfriend as She Enters Home with .30-30 Rifle

A Minnesota man has been sentenced to ten years in prison after his unsuccessful attempt to fatally shoot his father’s girlfriend with a rifle.

Earlier this week, 24-year-old Landon Terrance Tuomala was found guilty of attempted second-degree intentional murder—without premeditation—by Judge Michelle Anderson after a trial based on stipulated evidence, as reported by the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office.

Judge Anderson swiftly handed down a 120-month prison sentence, a decision that deviated from the state’s recommended 173-month term, a point of contention for the prosecutors involved.

The attempted murder took place on August 26, 2024, inside a home on East Third Avenue South in Aurora, a quaint mining community located approximately 60 miles north of Duluth.

First, a 911 call came in about an unseen woman shouting, “Call 911,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by Superior, Wisconsin-based NBC affiliate KBJR and Chisholm, Minnesota-based CBS affiliate KRII, which collectively broadcast as Northern News Now.

Second, Tuomala himself called 911 to say that he just shot someone but was no longer armed, according to law enforcement.

At the scene, East Range Police Department officers learned the defendant had fired a .30-30 — a lever-action rifle — at the victim after she entered the residence she shared with Tuomala and his father.

While walking inside the house just before 7 p.m., the woman saw the defendant training his weapon on her, so she turned around and ran, police said. In the fraught moments that fast ensued, the woman screamed for someone to call 911, and then, luckily, tripped and fell just as the bullet fired from the weapon sailed over her body.

As police arrived, Tuomala exited the house with his hands raised, still believing he had shot the woman, police said. The defendant said the victim got up and ran away after the shot was fired.

Other officers found the woman “visibly upset and shaking” in a nearby pickup truck. She had been escorted to safety by neighbors who said they heard a “ba-boom” sound followed by screams, according to court documents obtained by the Duluth News Tribune.

Later on, the woman recounted the events to law enforcement. She said she could not remember if Tuomala said anything as the long gun was pointed at her, just that she ran. Then, after she tripped and fell just in time, she got up to find the defendant still pointing the gun at her.

“[The] victim said she was terrified and thought she was going to die,” police wrote in the charging document.

The defendant told police he called 911 after he saw the victim fall to the ground in front of his father’s house.

Police later found a bullet in a neighboring home.

The victim told police Tuomala had recently moved in with her and his father after being told to leave two different treatment facilities.

During the bench trial, the judge determined the defendant did not have a mental illness defense, but justified the sentencing departure based on his lack of substantial capacity for judgment and a mental or physical impairment when the shooting occurred, prosecutors said.

Seattle Residents Campaign to Remove Mayor Amid Rising Crime Concerns

0

Seattle’s approach to governance is under scrutiny as its progressive mayor, Katie Wilson, confronts a potential recall. A group of residents is challenging her management of public safety issues, initiating procedures to unseat her just seven months into her tenure.

Prominent locals, Melinda Jacobson and Dale Osterud, have taken formal steps to recall Mayor Wilson, a Democrat, citing negligence in her duties regarding the public safety of Seattle’s citizens. The charges were filed amidst growing criticism over her leadership, particularly concerning safety, as reported by the Seattle Times.

Jacobson has been vocal in her dissatisfaction, stating that Wilson has “sort of ignored the public safety part of her job, which is a huge part, and that is not right.” Her remarks underscore the community’s expectations for effective oversight in this crucial area.

“This is a big city,” Jacobson told the outlet on Friday. “We need a big-city-type mayor who knows how to deal with everything.” Her statement highlights the growing sentiment among residents that Seattle requires more robust leadership.

In their formal accusation, the couple highlighted Wilson’s controversial decision to compel the resignation of Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes, 55. The issue centers on Barnes’ handling of a tragic incident at the Bite of Seattle food festival on July 27, which resulted in three deaths.

Barnes’ ouster showed a ‘lack of fiscal responsibility’ and sought ‘distrust among the citizens of Seattle’ in Wilson, according to the recall, which was published by KUOW.

Black community leaders, including the NAACP, Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, Byrd Barr Place and Community Passageways, also criticized Wilson after Barnes’ resignation.

The recall effort is the latest controversy Wilson has faced. Past dramas include criticism over her support of Washington state’s new millionaires’ tax and and her own pitches to enact higher taxes on Seattle’s most affluent residents and businesses.

Wilson was also criticized for turning off cameras in the Stadium District after the World Cup, while the city continues to be plagued by crime and squalor.

The letter said the cameras had ‘proven to be a crime-fighting help’ and that local residents and businesses were clamoring for them.

The couple’s recall noted that the North Aurora neighborhood in Seattle had featured ‘frequent gun battles by pimps, bullets through resident’s homes and businesses in the area, and ongoing human sex trafficking and prostitution’ from January to June.

Residents repeatedly tried to contact the mayor about the ‘serious and life-threatening conditions’ in their neighborhood but received no response, according to the letter.

‘It wasn’t until June 6th, when a widely publicized march took place on Aurora Avenue, with other city officials and hundreds of neighborhood residents present, that she took notice,’ the recall effort continued.

However, the letter claimed that Wilson ‘had the temporary barriers that neighbors had installed, to prevent gun fire, removed from their streets.’

The recall effort also focused on the Chinatown International District, where it was written that ‘business owners and residents [had] pleaded with [Wilson] to stop the open-air drug use and market.’

‘The area’s condition remains the same, including recent shootings and stabbings,’ the letter continued.

Wilson's office acknowledged that the charges had been filed and said the mayor's focus was 'on making life safer and more affordable for the people of Seattle'

Open drug use and marketing was also alleged to be occurring in the area around Belltown and 3rd Avenue.

The letter claimed that the area had been ‘cleaned up for the World Cup but is deteriorating again,’ causing many Seattle locals and tourists to become ‘fearful.’

Wilson’s office told the Daily Mail on Saturday that it was aware the charges described by Jacobson and Osterud had been filed.

‘While it does not appear to have merit, our focus remains where it belongs: on making life safer and more affordable for the people of Seattle,’ a spokesperson for Wilson’s office said.

‘Since taking office, we’re delivering meaningful progress: expanding community crisis responder hours, launching universal school meals this September, banning rental junk fees, accelerating shelter expansion, expanding transit, investing in our libraries, and taking on unfair pricing at grocery stores,’ the spokesperson continued.

Wilson’s office told the Daily Mail that ‘the courts will address any questions’ and that ‘we will address the needs of Seattle.’

The recall charge was received by the King County Elections on Tuesday, and it will now be sent to the King County prosecuting attorney’s office for a technical review.

The letter filed by the couple looking for Wilson's resignation repeatedly referenced open air drug use in Seattle

If the charges meet the technical requirements, a ballot synopsis will be written within 15 days by the prosecuting attorney’s office and filed with the King County Superior Court for a hearing, according to the Seattle Times.

After that, a judge will determine if the process can continue.

Supporters of the recall effort would then have 180 days to gather roughly 69,000 eligible signatures for an election, per the outlet.

Workers’ rights activist Wilson was elected last November and sworn into office on January 2, becoming mayor despite never having held elected office before.

She has faced criticism for potentially driving out Seattle’s wealthiest residents and for her response to Washington state’s 9.9 percent tax on people who make more than $1 million in annual income, which will come into effect in January 2028.

Starbucks has begun shifting jobs away from its Seattle HQ to Nashville. It insists it plans to stay in Seattle, where it was founded in 1973, but many locals believe the coffee giant is quietly planning an exit.

Seattle is also home to Microsoft and Amazon, with the city dependent on tax revenues from corporations whose owners the city now seeks to squeeze.

In June, Wilson chuckled when she was asked about being ‘dismissive’ over millionaires leaving her state. The tax is not specific to Seattle.

‘I don’t remember this,’ Wilson told a FOX 13 reporter.

She then added that she still thought ‘claims of a large exodus of rich people due to our statewide millionaire tax that the legislature passed this year are overblown.’

Her remark came as two of Seattle’s richest residents, Rich Barton and Howard Schultz, left Washington state.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the King County Elections system for comment.

Aaron Donald’s Potential Rams Comeback: Insightful Analysis from Top NFL Insider

0

The Los Angeles Rams find themselves in a waiting game as they anticipate a possible return from retirement by Aaron Donald. However, the team has opted not to pressure the three-time Defensive Player of the Year with a strict deadline for making this pivotal decision.

In a recent update on NFL Game Day Kickoff, insider Ian Rapoport highlighted that the Rams are comfortable without an immediate answer from Donald. “The Rams have not imposed a timeline for Aaron Donald’s decision because a definitive answer isn’t necessary at this moment,” Rapoport explained.

The team isn’t in a precarious position regarding their defensive line, ensuring they’re prepared irrespective of Donald’s choice. Rapoport noted, “The Rams aren’t pausing any roster adjustments in hopes of his return. Their defensive lineup, featuring Myles Garrett among others, is robust and ready. Donald’s comeback would simply add to their depth.”

Whether Donald decides in the coming weeks or later during the season, the Rams are prepared to adapt seamlessly. Rapoport emphasized, “The Rams are open to having him back whenever he decides, be it before or during the season. Welcoming him back is desirable but not essential at this point, so no strict schedule is set.”

Donald’s potential return poses a daunting prospect for the NFL’s other 31 starting quarterbacks. The mere idea of him rejoining the Rams as a bonus could send shivers through opposing teams, underscoring the heightened challenge they would face.

The Rams’ front seven is loaded. They have Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, and Braden Fiske listed as defensive lineman in their 3-4 scheme. Behind them are Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman, who had a breakout season in 2025 listed as linebackers.

Of course, Garrett will mostly be rushing the passer.

Ever since the Cleveland Browns traded Garrett to LA, Donald coming out of retirement has been the talk of the town.

The saga has lasted over two months and there is still a chance the story won’t reach its end for several weeks or even months. Donald is in the midst of testing his body and has even participated in an official workout with the Rams this summer.

As Rapoport said, the Rams don’t need Donald but a reunion with the eight-time All-Pro would be a Hollywood movie. Make no mistake, the 35-year-old isn’t looking to come out of retirement to be a rotational player.

Sean McVay and his squad are Super Bowl favorites, but the addition of Donald would propel the Rams’ chances to the Lombardi Trophy.

Travis Kelce Plays First Chiefs Game Post-Taylor Swift Wedding

0

Travis Kelce made a striking entrance, proudly flaunting his wedding ring as he arrived for his inaugural Kansas City Chiefs preseason game since his recent nuptials.

The 36-year-old NFL star experienced an offseason that was nothing short of transformative, as he wed pop icon Taylor Swift in a glittering ceremony at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on July 3, followed by an exhilarating honeymoon adventure.

Nevertheless, the accomplished tight end returned to the field on Saturday, ready to take on the Los Angeles Rams at Arrowhead Stadium for their first preseason clash, marking the start of his 14th season in the NFL.

Kelce made his appearance at the Kansas City arena with his signature panache, donning an eye-catching knit co-ord featuring a captivating gold tie-dye pattern, perfectly matching the vibrancy of the day.

The three-time Super Bowl champion exuded cool confidence, rounding off his look with sleek black sunglasses and matching sneakers.

However, the most notable accessory adorning his look was, of course, his new shining gold wedding band, which he flashed as he strolled into the stadium.

The ring caught attention as Kelce also clutched a can of orange Accelerator Active Energy Drink in his left hand. Kelce is an investor and prominent partner of the drinks brand.

However, his new wife was not initially spotted in one of the luxury suites at Arrowhead – as she often is for the Chiefs’ home games – as the clash kicked off for the first quarter.

Kelce was not expected to play in the exhibition game and did not start alongside a number of Chiefs stars, including Patrick Mahomes.

It marked a career first for Mahomes, who has notoriously remained active in preseason games compared to other starting quarterbacks, who often sit out games in order to avoid any risk of injury.

Mahomes has made a remarkable recovery from the torn ACL and LCL he suffered in his left knee against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14 last December. He was fully cleared ahead of training camp, but the team has been understandably cautious with his return.

However, head coach Andy Reid confirmed earlier in the week that Mahomes will sit out entirely for the first time since he was drafted back in 2017 when the Chiefs host the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night.

The Chiefs made some quarterback moves over the offseason, drafting Garrett Nussmeier from LSU in the seventh round and trading for Justin Fields from the New York Jets .

Fields started the game with Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun expected to take snaps later in the matchup.

Meanwhile, Kelce came under fire ahead of the clash earlier this week when NFL insider Jason La Canfora claimed that scouts in the league have suggested the tight end is finished at the top level.

‘Kelce is done. That’s over. What you saw last year, that’s what he is,’ Canfora claimed that one NFL scout told him, according to Casino Guru News.

The brutal assessment comes shortly after social media users claimed that Kelce had returned to Chiefs practice with a ‘dad bod’ after his whirlwind summer.

Kelce endured one of his toughest seasons of his NFL career last year, as the Kansas City Chiefs missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

On Wednesday afternoon, Kelce openly admitted that he felt partly to blame for the team’s struggles and will look to rectify that during his 14th NFL season.

When asked about what he wants to improve, Kelce said: ‘Just being a better leader.

‘When we get stuck, with adversity hitting, who’s going to want you in that foxhole with you? That’s one of those things, I want to be one of those guys that everybody counts on to be there and get us out of that foxhole.’

‘There were things I could have done better in that regard,’ Kelce added.

Asked about how practice was going, he said: ‘I feel ready to rock and roll. Just trying to make sure I set that example for the guys around me, that this is the standard.’

Elsewhere on Tuesday afternoon, Kelce finally shed some light on his star-studded and highly secretive wedding with popstar Swift.

While his focus is back on football for the time being, the tight end could not avoid inevitable questions about his offseason activities in his first press conference this season, saying his ‘crazy’ wedding was the ‘best night of his life’.

Kelce said: ‘It was a fun offseason, man, wedding was the best night of my life and I appreciate everyone who came out and celebrated and had fun with us.

‘That’s about all I really got from that night. It was a crazy night. It was full of a lot of celebration. But it’s football, baby.’

Asked specifically about getting married at Madison Square Garden, he added: ‘MSG, man. You know, I always told myself I’d go for a playoff game when the Knicks were rocking. Then my wife went when I was stuck in minicamp, so I didn’t get my opportunity to go then.

‘So it’s kind of cool to be able to live out my childhood dream of being in that venue, the Mecca of all sports venues, being able to get married in there.

‘I can’t thank the owners of MSG for allowing us to get the opportunity to do that, knowing we wanted a private event and everything, so it was perfect. And the AC was perfect, man, that’s the best part.’

Hurricane Lala Intensifies as Forecasters Confirm Upgrade from Tropical Storm

0

HONOLULU — In an unusual meteorological turn, Hurricane Lala emerged on Saturday, charting a course for Hawaii’s Big Island, a rare event in storm history.

The National Hurricane Center reported that Lala’s peak winds surged to 75 mph (120 kph), classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm’s eyewall is projected to pass over or near the island’s southern region by Saturday evening, potentially unleashing its fiercest winds on volcanic slopes that soar thousands of feet above sea level.

Remarkably, the Big Island has not seen a direct hurricane impact for 155 years. Regardless of direct landfall, meteorologists warned that the island’s higher elevations, particularly areas dominated by the majestic Mauna Kea volcano, could be drenched with up to 25 inches (63.5 centimeters) of rainfall.

Such heavy rainfall raises the risk of life-threatening mudslides in hilly terrains where off-the-grid communities reside in makeshift homes. Authorities are urging residents to promptly seek safer ground.

Even if Lala doesn’t fully intensify into a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center indicates that wind speeds on mountain peaks and across both windward and leeward slopes often exceed forecasted near-surface winds by up to 30%.

“This is an enormous storm,” Gov. Josh Green said. Tropical storm force winds extended outward for as much as 220 miles (350 km), and were expected to hit the islands of Oahu and Kauai by Sunday morning.

Destructive flooding and even wildfires kicked up by the strong winds were possible across the island chain.

Mike Caputo, who lives in Keaau, near the east coast of the Big Island, said the main concern is flash flooding and fallen trees, especially albizia, a common tree.

“They’re not very sturdy but they grow extremely large,” Caputo, 50, a local fire captain, said. “They can make roads impassable. I made sure my trees were trimmed a few days ago.”

Tropical storm warnings were issued for the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai and Niihau.

According to a University of Hawaii atmospheric scientist’s research of newspaper accounts, a Category 3 hurricane hit the northeast corner of the Big Island in 1871. The latest forecast has Lala striking “very close to the southern tip of the Big Island,” said Vanessa Almanza, a weather service meteorologist in Honolulu.

Officials and residents braced for Lala regardless. Shelters were opened, events were canceled and ranchers were urged to leave their cattle in pastures, rather than structures that might collapse. “It doesn’t take landfall to create destruction,” Almanza said.

The hurricane center predicted 8 to 12 inches (20.3 to 30.5 centimeters) of total rainfall across Maui and the lower elevations of the Big Island, and 4 to 6 inches (10.2 to 15.2 centimeters) across the island chain.

The center also warned that the storm could cause “life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain,” along with a dangerous storm surge and ocean swells “likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”

As of 8 a.m. in Hawaii, Tropical Storm Lala was located about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of South Point, Hawaii and about 300 miles (485 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu, with maximum sustained winds strengthening to 70 mph (110 kph). Lala was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph), the hurricane center said.

Officials urge taking the storm seriously

State Rep. Jeanné Kapela urged people to remain alert. The southern end of the island is remote and rural, with agriculture including coffee and cattle, but it’s growing in population because of its affordability. Kapela was especially worried about people who live off the grid in unpermitted structures.

“If you feel now that your house doesn’t have a great roof or might not be able to withstand hurricane force winds, then first things first you go to a family or friend’s house and you kind of hunker down there,” she texted to The Associated Press. “We’re hopeful the storm moves through quickly, but we’re preparing for whatever comes.”

Beloved Costco Treat Makes Sweet Comeback After Two-Year Hiatus

0

Costco enthusiasts have a delightful surprise as the beloved Kirkland Signature product reappears on shelves after being absent for two years.

Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips, the cherished offering from the retail giant, are returning after being discontinued in 2024. This pause was primarily due to skyrocketing cocoa prices, which made it challenging for Costco to maintain the affordable pricing their customers expect.

Now, the popular 4.5-pound red bags are starting to pop up in Costco locations across various U.S. regions. While distribution remains uneven, excited fans of this baking favorite are celebrating the comeback.

The resumption of sales was brought to light by vigilant shoppers, with a post on Reddit’s Costco forum quickly accumulating over 2,000 upvotes.

The online poster noted that the chocolate chips carry item number 1331846, with prices varying by location from $11.99 to $12.49.

One shopper simply responded: ‘And there was much rejoicing.’

Another wrote: ‘YES!!! Bakers rejoice!’

Others were equally enthusiastic, with one saying: ‘I AM SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!! This made my night!’

For some, the return is particularly welcome because they had been trying to avoid paying considerably more for rival brands while Costco’s own version was unavailable.

‘I was just checking yesterday and didn’t see it,’ one shopper wrote, while another said they had been ‘rationing’ their final bag.

A different commenter said they had been forced to buy Ghirardelli chips instead, describing the cost as ‘absolutely ridiculous’.

And there was another reason some shoppers were particularly pleased: Costco’s Kirkland chips had developed something of a cult following among consumers who refuse to buy Nestle products.

Several Reddit users cited ethical concerns and labor practices as reasons for avoiding the Swiss food giant.

The chocolate chips disappeared from US Costco warehouses in 2024 as cocoa prices surged to extraordinary levels.

Cocoa futures soared amid a combination of poor harvests, crop disease and weather problems affecting major producing regions, particularly West Africa. Prices climbed to record levels, putting pressure on chocolate manufacturers and retailers around the world.

Rather than simply passing the full increase on to shoppers, Costco opted to temporarily remove its Kirkland Signature version.

That was a particularly significant decision because value is at the heart of the Kirkland Signature proposition.

Kirkland Signature is Costco’s own private-label brand and has been around since 1995.

The name was chosen after the company was unable to trademark ‘Seattle Signature’, with Kirkland being the Washington city where Costco had its headquarters at the time.

Costco says the purpose of the range is to provide products that are as good as or better than leading national brands while offering savings of at least 20 per cent.

The range has since grown into one of the biggest private-label brands in the US, spanning everything from food and household products to clothing, pet supplies and even gasoline.

Costco says its buyers are involved in developing Kirkland products and that the label represents its own stamp of approval. That helps explain why the chocolate chips’ disappearance caused such a fuss.

While cocoa prices remain volatile, they have fallen substantially from the extraordinary highs seen during the 2024 chocolate-price crisis.

That has given Costco and its suppliers more room to bring the Kirkland product back.

And there is evidence that production is already under way, with shoppers reporting the red bags appearing at warehouses in states including Texas, Connecticut, Oregon, Washington and Virginia.

The chocolate chip comeback also follows a familiar Costco pattern: products can vanish from shelves when costs, supply problems or changing demand get in the way, only to become highly sought-after cult favorites once they’re gone.

Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter has recently made a comeback, while fans have continued to campaign for the return of other discontinued favorites, including Country French Bread and French Comte cheese.
