Nottingham Forest Signs £36m Ousmane Diomande Amid Lukaku’s £5m Turkey Move; Liverpool Teenager Sought in Portugal Transfer Drama

0

The moment football fans have been eagerly anticipating has arrived. The transfer window is wide open, running until September 1. It’s gearing up to be a vibrant period as clubs hustle to secure major signings for the upcoming season.

Updates are flowing in from none other than Simon Jones and the dedicated Daily Mail Sport team…

Palace consider ex-Brighton man

Solly March is making waves as he explores a potential free transfer to Crystal Palace, having already visited their training facilities.

During his time at Brighton, March has been a stalwart, gracing the Premier League field 194 times, where he netted 14 goals and chalked up 20 assists. His versatility allows him to operate seamlessly on either flank and even in the wing-back position.

This prospective move might stir strong emotions among Palace supporters, considering March’s deep-rooted history with their fierce rivals, Brighton. Notably, he has put two past Palace in 11 appearances against them.

Benfica right-back on Toon radar

Newcastle are exploring a move for Benfica right-back Amar Dedic.

The 23-year-old is valued around £25million and has also had interest from Everton.

Born in Austria, Dedic has over 30 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He started out at Red Bull Salzburg and also had a spell playing for FC Liefering when Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle’s new boss, was coaching there.

City’s Alleyne is the toast of Clarets

Manchester City defender Max Alleyne is joining Burnley on a season loan.

The 21-year-old who had a spell on loan at Watford last season is expected to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours and could be in the squad to face West Ham on Sunday.

Palace teen on Portuguese radar

Portuguese top-flight club Alverca – who are owned by Vinicius Jr – are in talks to sign Mofe Jemide on a permanent deal from Crystal Palace.

The imposing centre-back, who signed his first professional contract at Palace in 2023, has represented England at U20 level and had significant loan and permanent interest across Europe.

The 19-year-old trained with Pierre Sage’s first team squad in pre-season and was given minutes during friendlies against Swindon, Bromley, Famalicao and Al Ula.

He has yet to make his competitive senior debut, though, turning out 44 times for Palace’s U21s.

Chris Wilder was keen to re-sign the 30-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, despite a difficult loan spell last season.

Phillips made just three appearances for Sheffield United last term and was sent off on his last appearance for the club in the Steel City derby win over Sheffield Wednesday.

World Cup star joins Forest

Nottingham Forest have completed the £36million signing of Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon.

The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year deal with an option for another year.

Diomande said: ‘It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club. I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.

‘I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at the City Ground and together we can have a good season.’

Forest still want to add a right-back, midfielder and striker.

Patterson completes Wrexham medical

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has completed a medical ahead of his £8m move to Wrexham.

As Daily Mail Sport revealed yesterday, the 26-year-old has agreed terms on a four-year deal with the Championship club.

Patterson is finalising the paperwork on his contract.

Wrexham are also in talks to sign Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt in a £4.5m deal.

Hull get their Nobel prize

Hull City have finally agreed their protracted negotiations for Rayo Vallecano defender Nobel Mendy.

The centre back is heading over for his medical after the clubs settled on a £21million fee plus 12.5per cent sell-on clause, while his former club Real Betis receive 20 percent as part of their sell-on.

The 21-year-old Senegal international can play at centre back and left-back.

Fulham snap up Southampton’s Charles

Fulham have signed Shea Charles from Southampton for £27million plus £3m in add ons.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract, tying him to Craven Cottage until June 2031, with a club option to extend by a further 12 months. Southampton also retain a 20 percent sell-on.

Speaking to FFCtv, Charles, who will wear the number 19 shirt, said: ‘It’s a great club, with a really good vision – the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege.

‘I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it’s perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.

‘I’m buzzing to finally get it over the line. The club has got a really good foundation, from the bottom to the top really.’

Palace and Everton complete rare swap deal

Brennan Johnson and Dwight McNeil have completed their respective swaps to Everton and Crystal Palace and signed four year contracts.

Johnson, who only joined Palace from Tottenham in January for £35m, told evertontv: ‘I’m so excited to be here. The club speaks for itself – it’s a massive club and one that when I first heard of the interest, I immediately wanted to come and be part of it.

‘There were a lot of reasons why I was so keen to join – the manager, the players, the direction the team is going in. You can see this is a club that wants to go in the right direction, and I’m a player who wants to go in that direction, too, so it feels like a really good match.

He becomes the fifth summer signing for David Moyes’ squad after Merlin Rohl’s loan obligation was activated along with the additions of Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George and Christian Norgaard.

Meanwhile, McNeil has signed his four-year contract with Palace and said: ‘The lads have had some great success over the last two seasons. It’s something that I want to be a part of, so I’m really looking forward to getting started.’

Lukaku agrees Turkey move

Romelu Lukaku has agreed to join Turkish side Fenerbahce in a £5million move from Napoli.

The Belgium international has agreed a two year contract worth around £8.6m a season and has already passed his medical.

The deal includes further add ons based on performances.

Chelsea are understood to have inserted a 40percent sell-on clause when they sold Lukaku for a knockdown £26m to Napoli two years ago.

He scored 14 goals in his first season but injury and the arrival of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United restricted him to just seven games last year.

Liverpool starlet wanted in Portugal

Liverpool centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe is attracting attention from clubs in Portugal ahead of a loan move.

The 18-year-old who has joined the club from Austria Vienna in a £2.5million deal has stood out for the first team in pre-season friendlies.

But despite the promise he has shown, and Liverpool’s dearth of defensive cover, post-Brexit rules mean Austria youth international Ndukwe doesn’t have enough points to obtain a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) to obtain a work visa.

He will start against Como in their last friendly but is unable to play a competitive match for the Anfield club.

Now clubs from Germany, Spain, Denmark and France have been calling to take the 6ft 6ins centre back on loan but there is a sense Portugal may be his preferred destination.

After playing alongside him, captain Virgil van Dijk said: ‘Big talent, big guy and he wants to learn. I had a brief conversation with him, especially in the last couple of days. For him, it is just progressing. I know he has to go on loan I think so let’s see where he ends up.’

Napoli still in the hunt for Badiashile

Napoli have offered a £2m loan fee for Chelsea’s £30million-rated centre-back Benoit Badiashile with obligation to buy.

Discussions are ongoing between the clubs and the player’s representatives to try and find a full agreement.

Chelsea have sold Trevoh Chalobah to Como and are also looking to sell Axel Disasi who has had interest from Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Mamadou Sarr, who suffered an injury at the weekend, is likely to go on loan to a Premier League side.

Keeper Filip Jorgensen has completed his move to Strasbourg on loan.

Wigan Athletic are closing in on their loan move for Chelsea midfielder Reggie Walsh while Portsmouth want 17-year-old Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on loan.

Napoli remain keen on Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus also as talks continue. Arsenal want £20m for the Brazilian.

Villa defender wanted in Belgium

Aston Villa right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic is a target for Rangers along with Hugo Siquet of Bruges.

Nedeljkovic has had interest from a number of clubs including Osasuna but Rangers are exploring a £4million deal with initial loan for the Serbia international.

The 20-year-old had a spell with RB Leipzig last season.

Burnley after new keeper

Burnley are showing interest in OH Leuven goalkeeper Tobe Leysen.

The 24-year-old former Belgium U21 international has one year left on contract so Leuven are willing to listen to offers.

Strictly Stars Reveal Struggles with Limited Quality Time Together

Rachel Riley candidly discussed the unique challenges posed by her and Pasha Kovalev’s demanding schedules, which currently leave them with limited time for each other. The pair originally met when they were partnered on the popular show, Strictly Come Dancing, back in 2013. At 40, the Countdown presenter had just announced her separation from her then-husband, Jamie Gilbert, shortly after being eliminated from the show. She went public with her relationship with Pasha the following year.

In 2019, Rachel and Pasha, now 46, celebrated their union with marriage and have since become proud parents to two daughters, Maven, six, and Noa, four. In a recent interview, Rachel revealed that the rigors of their careers often force them to spend less time together than they prefer. Describing their interactions as akin to “ships passing in the night,” she noted that Pasha is gearing up for his Legends of the Dancefloor Tour, joining forces with fellow former Strictly professionals Brendan Cole, James Jordan, Vincent Simone, and Ian Waite. Rachel strategically tries to complete her work duties in advance, ensuring one of them remains at home to look after their children.

She elaborated, “So he’s about to go on tour with the boys, so there’s five of them going around the country from September through to the middle of November.

“Summer often in this industry is a bit quieter. My work’s kind of like screeched up, to try and get as much done before he goes away so that most of the time one of us is home. But it’s not always possible, unfortunately.”

In her conversation with the Daily Mail, Rachel further reflected on the importance of setting a positive example for their children, highlighting the value of having individual pursuits and managing finances well. “I think it’s good for the kids to have role models where you go out to work and you’ve got your own life as well and trying to teach them about the value of money, etc.”

“But we definitely prefer it if one of us is at home so often ships that pass in the night because I try and arrange work when he’s not there and the other way around.”

Releasing a joint statement confirming their separation, the professional dancers said: “We’re taking some time apart as we work through very difficult personal challenges. James moved out of the family home some time ago. This has been an incredibly painful and emotional journey for us both and it certainly wasn’t an easy decision.

James admitted his mental health “hasn’t been in a good place for quite some time”, adding: “I’ve been struggling more than I’ve let people see and I’m taking the time I need to focus on getting myself into a healthier place, both for myself and for Ella. Neither of us is in a good place right now. We’re both doing our best to navigate one of the hardest chapters of our lives.”

Couple Charged After Baby Dies From Alleged Diaper Incident

0

In a disturbing case out of Kentucky, two individuals have been detained following the tragic death of a one-year-old baby. The infant reportedly died after consuming a feces-contaminated diaper, having been forced to live in an un-air-conditioned garage.

The involved parties, 22-year-old Deavan Williams and the child’s mother, Alexandrae Price, initially faced charges of first-degree criminal abuse. This was noted in a statement released on July 28 by the Scottsville Police Department.

Authorities reported the charges stemmed from substantial evidence pointing to severe neglect. The child was allegedly exposed to extremely hazardous living conditions, exacerbating the neglectful environment.

On August 3, further developments revealed that Williams was also charged with murder related to the death of the infant, identified as Mason Moulding. This charge was appointed after a judicious review concluded there was adequate probable cause.

Mason Moulding Was Allegedly Living in Playpen Surrounded by Filth

The investigation commenced following a distress call to the family’s residence in Scottsville at approximately 10 p.m. on July 27. The report indicated that the baby had been rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival. As detailed in an arrest citation accessed by Lex 18, the infant suffered from “suspicious trauma,” including bleeding from the mouth and noticeable bruising across the body.

The child lost consciousness, according to the citation, after eating a feces-filled diaper while sitting inside a playpen kept in an un-air-conditioned garage. Investigators described the garage as being “filled with trash, beer cans, soiled diapers, and heavy cat urine.”

Williams told investigators, per the citation, that he was “surprised the baby did not have parasites due to the filth, and that he knew the baby had been eating a feces-filled diaper inside the playpen prior to becoming unresponsive.”

An arrest warrant filed by Scottsville Police Department in connection with the murder charges against Williams provided additional details into the child’s final days.

The baby was last seen alive July 27 while at grocery store with Price before she left for work.

Williams told investigators that he had been serving as the child’s primary caregiver when the baby collapsed, per the court records.

Investigators said that Williams admitted that he’d fallen asleep before Mason “consumed portions of a feces-contaminated diaper” and choked, according to the warrant.

During the discussion with investigators, he also told them that he had forced the child to eat “extremely spicy foods” despite Price’s objections and admitted the baby “routinely consumed diapers, couch cushions, and other unsafe objects,” according to the warrant.

Williams described the garage, where the playpen was located as having “animal urine, animal feces, raw sewage, decomposing animals, and other hazardous conditions that Williams personally described as containing pathogens and parasites,” the warrant alleged.

In a warrant filed in Price’s case, also obtained by Lex 18, investigators said the baby was also kept in a basement in the home.

“Price also stated that the living area had flies and spiders,” authorities wrote in the court documents. “A large amount of trash and debris was also found in the living area, posing significant health hazards. The living area was also reported to have high moisture levels and poor ventilation, posing a health hazard.”

The couple bathed the child with a garden hose, due to a lack of running water, according to the warrant.

The baby’s grandmother, Tina Renee Price, 51, is also facing charges of first-degree criminal abuse, knowingly abuse/neglect of an adult by a person and second-degree cruelty to animals, according to a statement from Scottsville Police.

Animals Found With “Severe Signs of Neglect” Inside Deavan Williams’ Home

As part of the investigation, the Allen County Animal Control also removed three dogs, 12 cats and a opossum from the home, police said in a July 31 update to the case.

“Sadly, most of the animals showed severe signs of neglect, and several are in such poor condition that humane euthanasia will be necessary,” they wrote. “Based on the evidence developed during this investigation, animal cruelty charges will be forthcoming.”

They added that multiple agencies were also working “to address the welfare and placement needs of other vulnerable individuals associated with this residence,” however, they declined to provide further details.

“We understand the community wants immediate answers and action,” police wrote. “Unfortunately, thorough investigations take time. We ask for your continued patience as we work to ensure every victim is protected and every person responsible is held accountable.”

Its unclear whether any of the defendants has retained an attorney or entered a plea to the charges against them.

Dramatic Video Captures Michigan Rescuers Saving Family Stranded 3 Days on Tubing Trip

0

A riveting new video captures the heart-stopping rescue of a family of three who found themselves stranded in Michigan’s wilderness for three grueling days. The family had lost their way while tubing along a challenging stretch of the river.

The dramatic footage shows heroic efforts by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and a skilled Michigan State Police K-9 unit as they successfully tracked down Jazman Hock, her cousin Sarah Vida, and Sarah’s spirited 9-year-old son, Kayden Kovalcik, on August 8. The trio became marooned after their tubing adventure on the Muskegon River took an unexpected turn.

The video also captures the tense yet hopeful moments as determined state troopers and resource personnel zeroed in on the lost family. “Make some noise… Yell!” instructed a rescuer, urging the family to signal their presence amidst the dense wilderness surroundings.

Navigating through the dense forest and overgrown grass, the rescuers pressed on, calling out to the trio until finally, they reunited with the relieved family.

Just days before, Jazmin Hock and her relatives were enjoying a leisurely tubing outing on Michigan’s scenic Muskegon River. That is, until their water crafts gave way, leaving them stranded amid the river’s daunting terrain for three long days. (Aleshia Wood/iStock)

One of the women was cut up and wearing a bathing suit while Kovalcik was shirtless. The group had been water tubing on the Muskegon River when their rafts, which were only meant to be used in a pool, broke apart and left them stranded, Jazman’s mother, Teresa Hock, told WWMT.

The family can be heard telling their rescue team what happened.

“We got lost on the river,” the shirtless Kovalcik explained.

“We went to the river, and we were on the river for four hours,” he continued.

The rescuers appeared audibly shaken, as one exasperated “oh my God” multiple times. Another hugged one of the two women, repeatedly telling her, “good job, good job.”

It’s unclear which of the two women he’s speaking to, but one rescuer tells her, “let’s have you sit down, you are cut up. You’re not going to be able to walk very good, are you?”

“I’m forcing myself,” she replies.

While the trio had packed protein bars and water, they gave all the food to the young Kovalcik, Hock told WWMT, while the two women survived on flowers, bark and ants.

“We are relieved to report that Jazman Hock, Sarah Vida, and Kayden Kovalcik have been located alive and safe. This is the outcome everyone involved had hoped for. We are incredibly grateful for the tireless efforts of the many law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency responders, search and rescue teams, and volunteers who dedicated countless hours to this search,” Michigan State Police said in a post on X.

“Jazman, Sarah, and Kayden were located safe by an MSP K-9 team and Michigan DNR Conservation Officers approximately three-quarters of a mile northeast of the Mill Iron Rd Boat Launch at 4:36 pm. It was truly remarkable to see so many highly trained professionals from multiple agencies come together by establishing a Unified Command, share resources, and work as one team toward a common goal,” the post concluded.

News Media contacted Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Natural Resources for further comment.

Jury Selection Commences for Defendant in Jared Bridegan Murder Case

0

In Jacksonville, Florida, the trial of Mario Fernandez-Saldana has officially commenced with jury selection as the first order of business. Fernandez-Saldana stands accused in connection with the murder of Jared Bridegan, a case that has captured public attention.

Jared Bridegan, a father of four, fell victim to a tragic gunning down back in 2022. Investigators assert that Fernandez-Saldana, alongside Bridegan’s ex-wife Shanna Gardner, concocted a nefarious ‘murder-for-hire plot’ to orchestrate Bridegan’s untimely demise.

The crucial phase of jury selection kicked off on Monday, drawing 100 potential jurors into the courtroom. Fernandez-Saldana, clad in a suit, was present and courteously greeted the arriving jurors, though he abstained from engaging in further discourse.

These jurors faced division into two distinct groups. Group One comprised individuals who encountered either scheduling conflicts, personal hardships, or prior exposure to the case’s details. Within a private setting, these jurors were interviewed by Judge London Kite, attorneys, and Fernandez-Saldana. Initially, the media, including representatives from First Coast News, were barred from the room. However, an intervention by First Coast News led to a successful legal challenge allowing journalistic presence during the proceedings.

Inside this chamber, jurors were thoroughly questioned regarding their conflicts of interest and any pre-existing knowledge of the case. Jurors who admitted prior knowledge were scrutinized for their ability to remain impartial. This led to the excusal of several candidates due to their prior acquaintance with the case details.

Those who were retained were asked to fill out a questionnaire. They will report back to court on Wednesday to begin Phase Two of the jury selection process.

Wade Boggs Stuns Fans and Baseball Legends with Victorious Post-Cancer Shirtless Photo

0

Wade Boggs is certainly putting many to shame.

The baseball legend recently took to social media, sharing a shirtless photo of himself enjoying a day out fishing, showing off an impressively toned physique.

Just earlier this May, Boggs announced he’s been in the clear from cancer for two years, following a diagnosis of prostate cancer in September 2024.

This revelation left sports fans in awe, further heightened when seeing Boggs’ athletic build, including praise from fellow Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young Award recipient, Jim Palmer.

Palmer commented on X, “100 walks, 200 hits or more for 7 straight years and yet the Red Sox labeled you as just a singles hitter… if that’s how you looked during your career, the front office wouldn’t have had any complaints. Hope you’re doing well.”

“Wade Boggs will drink your beer, eat your chicken, land your fish & kick your ass all before dinner time,” an X user wrote.

“I gotta be honest here. I did not expect Wade Boggs to show up on my timeline looking like an absolute unit today,” another said.

“Some good pasture raised chickens Wade,” a third said.

“I guess I’ll skip the blueberry muffin I bought for breakfast today,” someone else chimed in.

“Prob should have hit a few more homers bro. Haha,” another wrote.

An X user even asked AI chat bot Grok if the image was real.

The account responded: “Modern AI images can be virtually indistinguishable from real ones, so definitive calls from visuals alone are tough. This was posted by Wade Boggs’ official account and matches his recent look. Looking that jacked at 68 after beating cancer is amazing.”

The 67-year-old revealed his cancer update while in Boston at Fenway Park, where he played for 11 seasons, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Red Sox’s first home game.

His last treatment was on Nov. 3, 2024.

“I had my checkup a month ago, and I’m completely cancer-free,” he said, per NPR.

“I’m a cancer survivor now. Prostate cancer is null and void. Thank God,” Boggs said after throwing out a first pitch before the Rays-Red Sox game.

Boggs was drafted by the Red Sox in 1976 out of Plant High School in Tampa, Fl.

After his years in Boston where he earned eight All-Star nods, he went on to play five years for the Yankees and was a crucial member of the 1996 World Series team that upset the Braves.

Boggs played his final two years with the Rays where he earned his 3,000th hit before retiring at 41 in 1999.

His jersey has been retired by both the Red Sox and Rays.

Lauren Boebert’s Son’s Mugshot: What’s Behind the Glare?

0

Recently surfaced mugshots of Tyler Boebert, son of Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, have come to light following his arrest on charges concerning the sexual exploitation of a child.

The released images from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office show the 21-year-old with a stoic expression.

After being charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, which includes a charge related to video content, Boebert was released on a $10,000 bond, as confirmed by Colorado court records dated August 6.

Authorities allege that these charges are tied to a 43-second video he allegedly recorded featuring himself and a 17-year-old girl, material they have classified as child sexual abuse content, according to a report by People.

Reportedly, the video in question was filmed on February 1, 2024, when Boebert was 18 and the girl, 17, as noted by People.

According to an affidavit, the girl reported the video to police the following day after her ex-boyfriend received a copy. Her mother later told authorities that the video had been posted to Instagram, according to NBC News.

The charges relate to felonies that allegedly occurred in 2024.

He was also slapped with two counts of ‘contributing to the delinquency of a minor.’

Boebert spoke out after her son was arrested on charges of child sexual exploitation.

She told the Daily Mail, ‘I love my son. We take these allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time.’

The records indicate that Tyler was released on Sunday. He is scheduled to appear in Garfield County District Court on August 19.

He has not yet entered a plea in the case, first reported by American Muckrakers.

This is not the congresswoman’s son’s first run-in with the law, as he was charged with child abuse in February.

Tyler, one of Boebert’s four children, was slapped with a misdemeanor charge of child abuse without injury, according to 9News.

He is accused of leaving his two-year-old son unattended at the congresswoman’s home in Windsor, Colorado, in February.

The tot then reportedly wandered away from the house, which is located close to a lake.

Colorado Representative Boebert told 9News at the time that there’s ‘no excuse’ for her son’s actions and that she’s ‘very frustrated this happened.’

‘A kind woman quickly and safely secured him, and authorities were called as a precaution,’ Boebert added at the time.

The charge was Tyler’s second of the same nature.

Tyler was cited on July 11 last year for leaving his son unattended.

He was charged with criminal negligence where no death or injury occurred, according to documents from the Windsor Police Department.

Tyler had his son, Josiah, in June 2023 when he was still a teenager, making Boebert a grandmother at the age of 36.

The Republican said in a statement to the Daily Mail previously, ‘Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year.

Boebert often brings her grandson to DC with her, and he was seen in a photograph depicting the congresswoman’s visit to a local farm in Colorado, shared by her office on Monday.

Revitalize Leg Strength After 55: Top 5 At-Home Exercises

0

Fed up with gym equipment? Here are five effective standing exercises that can rejuvenate your leg strength after the age of 55.

>

As we age past 55, maintaining the strength of our leg muscles requires genuine and consistent effort. While gym machines offer support, they might also make your lower-body workouts feel a bit too dependent. For those looking to regain functional muscle strength, standing exercises often provide a more robust and effective challenge for your legs.

Engaging in standing workouts means your legs must do much more than push against a cushioned pad or navigate a predetermined course. You need to manage your body weight, maintain balance, and coordinate your movements carefully to ensure this strength translates to real-world scenarios beyond the gym walls.

This routine centers on significant lower-body movements without turning your workout into a daunting task. Foundational exercises like squats and deadlifts set the groundwork. Activities such as lunges and step-ups target each leg individually, while the swing exercise injects a burst of speed and power, rounding off your session.

Incorporate these five standing exercises into your routine two to three times per week. Begin with manageable weights, leaving room for progress, and build your leg muscles steadily, one well-executed workout at a time.

Goblet Squat

The goblet squat is one of the best starting points for rebuilding leg muscle because it provides a strong squat pattern without the pressure of a barbell on your back. Holding the weight in front helps you stay upright, which makes it easier to feel your quads, glutes, and core working together.

This one also teaches you how to own the bottom of a squat. That matters after 55 because strong legs aren’t only about standing up. You also need control on the way down.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core, upper back.

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at chest height.
  3. Brace your core and keep your chest tall.
  4. Lower into a squat by bending your knees and hips.
  5. Pause briefly when you reach a comfortable depth.
  6. Press through your whole foot to stand tall.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Bodyweight squats, box goblet squats, slow-tempo goblet squats.

Form Tip: Keep the weight close to your chest to keep your torso strong throughout the rep.

The 6-Minute Wall Routine That Firms Belly Pooch Faster Than Crunches After 60

Barbell Deadlift

The barbell deadlift builds the back side of your legs in a way most machines can’t match. Your hamstrings and glutes have to drive the movement, while your trunk and upper back help keep the bar close and the lift controlled.

You don’t need to pull heavy singles for this to work. A clean set of moderate deadlifts can do plenty to rebuild strength in your hips, legs, and back. Keep the range of motion honest, and use blocks or a raised starting position if pulling from the floor doesn’t feel right yet.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, core, upper back, grip.

How to Do It

  1. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and the barbell over the middle of your feet.
  2. Hinge at your hips and grip the bar just outside your legs.
  3. Brace your core and pull your chest up slightly.
  4. Press through the floor as you stand tall with the bar.
  5. Keep the bar close to your body throughout the lift.
  6. Hinge your hips back and lower the bar with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps. Rest for 90 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Rack pulls, trap-bar deadlifts, kettlebell deadlifts.

Form Tip: Think about pushing the floor away as you stand, not yanking the bar off the ground.

Dumbbell Walking Lunge

Walking lunges make each leg handle its own share of the work. That’s a big deal if one side tends to feel stronger, more stable, or more coordinated than the other. The movement also brings balance and stride control, giving it a practical edge for everyday strength.

Start with bodyweight if needed. Once your steps feel steady, light dumbbells can make this exercise a serious leg builder without requiring a machine or a huge load.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Step forward with one foot.
  3. Lower into a lunge until both knees bend comfortably.
  4. Press through your front foot to stand and bring your back leg forward.
  5. Step into the next lunge with the opposite leg.
  6. Continue alternating steps.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per leg. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Bodyweight walking lunges, reverse lunges, shorter-stride walking lunges.

Form Tip: Take a steady step and let your front leg do the work before you move into the next rep.

4 Daily Standing Exercises That Keep Your Back Pain-Free After 60

Dumbbell Step-Up

Step-ups train the exact kind of strength many people want more of after 55. You’re driving through one leg, controlling your balance, and lifting your body onto a higher surface. That makes the exercise useful for stairs, hills, and any moment where your legs need to support you one side at a time.

Choose a box or step that lets you move well. If the height forces you to push off the back leg, it’s too high for now. You should feel the working leg take charge.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, core.

How to Do It

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy box, bench, or step with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Place one foot fully on the step.
  3. Brace your core and lean forward slightly.
  4. Press through the foot on the step to stand tall.
  5. Lower yourself back down with control.
  6. Complete all reps on one side before switching legs.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between sets.

Best Variations: Bodyweight step-ups, lower step-ups, step-ups with a pause at the top.

Form Tip: Keep your whole foot on the step and avoid bouncing off the floor with your trailing leg.

Unmasking Mortgage Stress in Australia: Where Conventional Wisdom Fails Homeowners

0

New insights reveal that numerous Australian homeowners are allocating more than half their monthly net income to mortgage payments, with the average borrower dedicating around 38% of their post-tax earnings to their home loans.

This information comes from a recent study conducted by Finder, a popular financial comparison platform. The survey, carried out in July, polled about 1,000 Australians aged 16 and older, including 291 individuals with current mortgages.

Though saving for an initial deposit poses a significant challenge for many aspiring homeowners, successfully purchasing a property introduces a fresh set of hurdles.

“Mortgage repayments are so substantial for many Australians that they verge on causing mortgage stress. The insights into generational and gender gaps are particularly eye-opening,” states the report.

The survey highlights that about 55% of the respondents are experiencing mortgage stress — a term used to define households that spend over 30% of their income on home loan installments.

But Richard Whitten, a home loans expert at Finder, cautioned that the mortgage stress metric is “more complicated” when applied to Australia’s current housing market.

“I’d treat it as a benchmark figure rather than an absolute red line,” Whitten told SBS News.

“It depends on factors like how much you earn, and what your household expenses look like. If you’ve got a lot of other big expenses like childcare or private school fees, you have less wiggle room.”

What does mortgage stress mean?

The concept of mortgage stress is often linked to the United States’ 1969 Housing and Urban Development Act, which set a benchmark on housing affordability. Under the Brooke Amendment, rent in public housing was capped to 25 per cent of family income.

By 1981, this rent cap was raised to 30 per cent. The 30 per cent threshold subsequently became a widely used metric for housing affordability for renters and homeowners.

The Reserve Bank of Australia says on its website the benchmark in Australia dates back to its 1991/92 National Housing Strategy.

Generally, mortgage stress is calculated by comparing home loan repayments to a household’s gross (pre-tax) income.

Tom Alves, acting managing director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), told SBS News that this proxy for housing unaffordability has also evolved into the ’30:40 rule’.

“Usually, we look at the bottom 40 per cent of income distribution to see if anyone there is paying more than 30 per cent of their household income.

“So, the higher up the income distribution you are, I guess the more capacity you have to absorb a greater proportion of household income on housing costs.”

Why the rule was never meant for everyone

Alves believes the 30:40 benchmark can be a “simplified” way of measuring mortgage stress but acknowledged it’s “the standardised sort of rule of thumb … fairly consistently [used] here and internationally as well”.

He said it’s important to recognise there’s a “spectrum of income” which impacts how much Australian households can comfortably devote to mortgage repayments.

“If your household income is $1 million, for example, you could comfortably pay 50 per cent or more … of that income on housing costs and not feel that as stress,” he said.

“If you’re only earning $50,000 as a household, for example, then even 25 per cent of your income is going to have a big impact on your capacity to pay for other things.”

Alves said demographics including single-parent households and those with dependents are more likely to find housing costs “more difficult to accommodate within their budget”.

The Australian National University’s microsimulation model, PolicyMod, has tracked the proportion of households spending more than 30 per cent of disposable income on housing across three decades.

Using data derived from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Survey of Income and Housing, it found that statistically, single parents and single-occupant households were more likely to experience mortgage stress.

Steven Rowley is a professor at Curtin University and director of AHURI’s Curtin Research Centre.

In 2024, he co-authored a report examining housing affordability, which highlighted: “Normative housing affordability measures remain insensitive to factors such as household size, composition and formation, housing tenure, quality, and locational and neighbourhood characteristics.”

Rowley told SBS News he does not believe mortgage stress is a “good metric” in the Australian context as many households will choose to spend more than 30 per cent of their income on housing.

“Considering it their most important expenditure item … others may not wish to spend more than 30 per cent but have little choice because there is nothing affordable that would allow them to spend less,” he said.

He also noted that the mortgage stress benchmark does not account for gaps in home equity and wealth.

Whitten said some households may choose to put themselves in mortgage stress and believes “going all in on property can set you up for long-term stability but not if it leaves you exposed in the short-term”.

“You really need to be able to afford to pay your groceries and utilities, car repairs, any surprise expenses.”
