Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott Welcome First Baby, Announcing Joyful New Chapter

0

Aubrey Plaza is embracing motherhood!

The beloved “Parks and Recreation” star recently welcomed her first child with partner Christopher Abbott.

Paparazzi caught a glimpse of the new mom cradling her newborn in New York City last Sunday. The outing came after what was reportedly Abbott’s final appearance in Broadway’s acclaimed production, “Death of a Salesman.” According to TMZ, insiders revealed that Plaza gave birth to a baby girl in the final days of July.

Plaza first shared her pregnancy with the world in April, just a day after People magazine announced she was expecting and scheduled to welcome her baby in the fall.

“They feel very blessed,” an insider mentioned at the time, describing the addition to their family as “a beautiful surprise after an emotional year.”

Plaza, notably, lost estranged husband Jeff Baena in January 2025.

The former couple had been separated for four months when the director died by suicide at age 47.

Plaza and Baena’s family released a joint statement in the wake of the “unimaginable tragedy,” reading, “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

The comedian opened up about her “daily struggle” on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast seven months later.

“Right in this very very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,” she told the host in August 2025. “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning.”

Plaza went on to compare her grief to a “giant ocean of just awfulness.”

She explained, “Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it. And sometimes I look at it and sometimes I just try to get away from it, but it’s always there.”

The Emmy nominee credited her “funny friends” with still being able to make her “laugh really, really hard” while navigating the tragedy.

The “White Lotus” alum married Baena in May 2021, with the duo spontaneously tying the knot in tie-dye pajamas after a decade together.

It is unclear when she began dating Abbott.

Plaza and the “Girls” alum, 40, have acted together in the “Black Bear” film and the “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” Off-Broadway production in 2020 and 2023, respectively.

Abbott broke his silence on his girlfriend’s pregnancy in a May “Today” show interview, calling it a “very exciting” development.

Prior to Plaza, the actor dated his “Katie Says Goodbye” co-star Olivia Cooke between 2015 and 2020.

Marvel Fans Torn Apart as The Punisher Roils Spider-Man: Brand New Day Debates

0

Though “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” marks the fourth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man saga, its scope stretches far beyond just another superhero film. This ambitious project also intertwines with the larger MCU through several beloved characters. It serves as a “New Avengers” connection, featuring Florence Pugh’s compelling portrayal of Black Widow and integrates a Hulk narrative led by the ever-charming Mark Ruffalo. In a twist, it also hints at the coming of the MCU’s X-Men, highlighted by Sadie Sink’s take on Jean Grey. Add a layer of the vigilante edge with Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, and it almost feels like a Punisher movie. The dynamics between Castle and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man have sparked varied fan reactions. For an in-depth analysis, watch our detailed video above.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, the contrast could be immediately noticeable. The Punisher, synonymous with being one of Marvel’s grimmest characters, pursues a relentless quest against evil without compassion. On the other hand, Peter Parker, portrayed by Holland, brings a lighter, more hopeful energy even amidst challenging narratives, as is evident in “Brand New Day.” While many appreciate the film’s lighter, comedic tone with Castle, some fans argue that this shift marks a misstep for Marvel in their portrayal of the Punisher.

Opinions may differ based on what one expects from the character, yet this nuanced version of Frank Castle aligns creatively with the film’s overall narrative. Though it diverges from his depiction in “Daredevil” and other series, his portrayal in this context feels purposeful.

The Punisher is less brutal in Spider-Man Brand New Day

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” explores two pivotal themes: the constant of change and the universal need for companionship. These themes cleverly justify this reimagined version of Frank Castle—a vigilante who, showing a softer side, stays by Spider-Man’s hospital bed after an accidental shooting and is visibly moved when Peter regains consciousness. This portrayal contrasts sharply with the ruthless assassin from Bernthal’s previous outings. However, within the film’s storyline, does it really seem so implausible?

People can change, and this Punisher isn’t wildly different from the one we’ve seen on the Netflix and Disney+ series. His friendship with the endlessly optimistic Spidey might just be the thing he needed to let a tiny bit more light into his life. “You look just like I thought you would,” Frank tells Peter after he wakes up from his coma in the hospital. “A nice kid. I never had a friend like that.”

Is it a bit much for the character? Sure. But at the same time, this has long been part of the Marvel Comics universe. Characters behave differently under the pen of different writers, in different series and crossovers, by the very nature of the medium. The MCU has garnered plenty of guff over the years for its extensive “homework,” but the bright side of that is a roster of characters who can be pulled out of the box and mixed up at any time. Of course Punisher is going to act a little different in Spider-Man’s latest movie. That hasn’t stopped “Brand New Day” from blowing everyone away at the box office.

Aubrey Plaza Spotted with Newborn Baby for the First Time at 42

0

Aubrey Plaza recently made her first public appearance with her newborn, catching the attention of onlookers as she tenderly held the baby close.

On a sunny Sunday, the 42-year-old actress was seen embracing her little one during a family outing in New York City. It marks a new chapter in her life with partner Christopher Abbott, aged 40, as they welcomed their first child together.

Dressed for the warm weather, Plaza opted for a casual look, sporting a black tank top and sunglasses, as she ventured out into the bustling Manhattan streets with their child.

Her day included a stop at the Winter Garden Theatre, where she supported Abbott during the last show of his Broadway, “Death of a Salesman.”

Just two weeks earlier, Plaza was photographed showcasing her baby bump as she enjoyed a leisurely stroll in New York City on July 26.

It is the first child for both Plaza and Abbott. The White Lotus star first confirmed her pregnancy in April.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Plaza’s reps for comment.

In the days since she welcomed her baby, she dressed for comfort, wearing baggy jeans and black, slip-on sneakers.

Plaza had a smile on her face and was a doting, new mom as she attentively watched a family member, who also took turns holding her baby.

The Parks and Recreation alum showed off her natural beauty and radiant glow as she stepped out sans makeup and with her dark tresses pulled back in carefree, high ponytail.

At the time, she spoke about becoming a first-time mother over a year since she became estranged from her late husband Jeff Baena.

Baena died by suicide in January 2025. Plaza and the screenwriter had been separated since September 2024, an LA County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report obtained by DailyMail.com revealed.

When asked if she was ‘excited’ about taking on motherhood on The View in April, she gushed: ‘I am. Yeah, I’ve always wanted to see what that’s all about, you know?’

People first confirmed Plaza was pregnant with her first child in April and said she was due to give birth in the fall.

‘It was a beautiful surprise after an emotional year,’ a source told the publication at the time.

The couple, who previously starred on Broadway together before falling in love, are said to be feeling ‘very blessed.’

Plaza’s partner Abbott is best known for playing the on-off boyfriend of Allison Williams’s character Marnie on Lena Dunham’s influential HBO comedy Girls.

Plaza and Abbott worked together in 2019 on the indie psychological drama Black Bear, in which both actors played dual roles as actors and directors trying to shoot a film in an eerie, isolated lake house.

The low-budget thriller premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 to critical acclaim, with several reviewers singling it out as one of Plaza’s best performances to date.

In 2023, the pair collaborated together again — this time on stage — in the Off Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s play Danny And The Deep Blue Sea, which ran until January 2024.

Indiana Father Charged with Severe Abuse After Allegedly Biting Newborn

0

A tragic incident in Indiana has captured attention after a father allegedly bit his newborn daughter when her cries couldn’t be soothed. The baby, left bruised in a manner described vividly as resembling a “busted up egg,” is at the center of a court case revealed in a probable cause affidavit sent to Oxygen.

Eighteen-year-old Kaden Manuel Lewis Shrum is facing serious charges of battery causing injury to a person under 14, categorized as a level 5 felony. The charge, documented in a Monroe County court filing obtained by Oxygen, highlights the severity of the allegations.

Although Shrum has entered a not guilty plea as documented in court records, the affidavit notes that he reportedly admitted to both relatives and social workers from the Department of Child Services that he was indeed responsible for biting the infant.

Concerns escalated on July 15 when a pediatrician alerted the Department of Child Services to a suspicious mark on a 9-day-old baby’s face. According to the affidavit, the bruise — alarming and unusual — was described as “suspicious” and suspected to be from a bite, with ring-like markings encompassing her entire left cheek indicative of dental impressions.

Initially, Shrum explained to authorities that the mark might have been caused by his daughter sleeping on her pacifier. He mentioned that he and the child’s mother were planning to have the infant examined at a scheduled weigh-in appointment the next day.

However, police noted in the affidavit that it was “highly improbable” that a pacifier caused the injury based on the pattern and force.

Shrum eventually admitted that his daughter had been fussing and crying and would not sleep, so in trying to calm her down, he “nibbled” on her cheek.

“He demonstrated how he took the skin of her cheek into his mouth,” according to the affidavit, “and repeatedly bit down on it in a chomping motion.”

Shrum said that he regularly “nibbles” the baby and that while he intentionally bit her, he did not intend to harm her, according to the affidavit. He explained that he accidentally bit down too hard after taking too much of her skin between his teeth and that this was the first time he had caused an injury.

“She’s so small and delicate,” Shrum told police, as written in the affidavit. “She’s like a busted-up egg.”

Shrum was arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail. He has since been released after posting bond, a spokesperson from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department told Oxygen.

He will next appear in court on September 1, court records show. Oxygen could not locate his attorney

Chicago Community Seeks Federal Assistance Amid Ongoing Police Investigation into Multiple Shootings

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Amid a growing concern over escalating crime rates, community members convened at the Bold Mongol restaurant in Bridgeport. Their goal was to urge federal intervention and request more resources to combat the rising wave of violence, particularly gun-related incidents, affecting neighborhoods throughout Chicago.

This call to action came shortly after a series of shootings were reported across the city.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“When is this going to stop?” questioned Raul Montes Jr., a fervent community activist, voicing the exasperation felt by many.

As he addressed those gathered, Montes highlighted the prevailing frustration among residents over the unrelenting violence.

“The trail of destruction continues unabated throughout Chicago, and we have had enough,” Montes declared.

Police are investigating at least seven separate shootings across the city that authorities said are not believed to be connected. Several people were injured, and at least three people were killed.

Among the incidents, police said a man was fatally shot near 45th Street and Honore Street around midnight. About two hours later, police said a 32-year-old man was shot and killed in the temple in West Garfield Park.

Roughly 30 minutes later, police said a 29-year-old man standing outside a vehicle near 28th Street and Kedzie Avenue was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Later in the morning, gunfire erupted shortly before 8:30 a.m. 400 block of North Leclaire Avenue in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, leaving three people shot and another also wounded. They were listed in fair condition.

Community member Richard Zupkus said residents must take an active role in addressing violence.

“I’m not counting on the politicians to fix this. I’m not waiting on the police to do anything. We the people have to come together and figure out a different way of when we get upset with one another,” Zupkus said.

Montes called on Congress to provide additional federal support for violence prevention efforts.

“Anybody could be the next victim here. So, we’re calling on federal funding from Congress. We need more violence prevention initiatives. We need more police. We need more cameras. We need to work together,” Montes said.

According to Chicago Police Department crime statistics through July 31, analyzed by the ABC7 Data Team, homicides over the previous 12 months were trending up 1.4% compared with the same period last year.

However, the murder rate during the previous 12 months was lower than the annual average over the past three years.

Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shootings.

Walking 30 Minutes Daily: A Guide to Fitness and Well-Being for Individuals Over 60

0

Considering a daily stroll post-60? Discover the benefits it brings and the areas it might not completely address.

>

Spending half an hour walking daily ranks among the best fitness routines for those over 60. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity—no need for special gear—and its alignment with the CDC’s guidance for older individuals: 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly, akin to brisk walking. Achieving that boils down to a manageable 30 minutes a day, five days each week.

What does being “fit” involve, you ask? If we’re talking heart health, endurance, regulating blood sugar, and staying spry, a brisk stroll can do wonders. The American Heart Association defines brisk walking at a pace of roughly 2.5 miles per hour or faster as moderate aerobic exercise, appealing for those intent on using walking as part of a fitness regimen.

As we journey past 60, fitness encompasses more than just aerobics—strength, balance, and mobility become essential for everyday ease. While walking lays a strong aerobic groundwork, it doesn’t fully tackle areas like strength and balance, which is why the CDC emphasizes adding muscle-strengthening and balance-enhancing exercises each week for older adults.

Is a daily 30-minute walk adequate? It suffices to establish a solid fitness base. To flesh out a comprehensive plan, maintain those walks while incorporating two brief sessions of strength training and some balance activities into your weekly routine.

What 30 Minutes of Walking Actually Does

A 30-minute walk gives your cardiovascular system steady, repeatable work. Your heart beats a little faster, your breathing deepens, and your muscles use oxygen to keep you moving. That’s why brisk walking fits neatly into the baseline activity guidelines for older adults.

Walking can help after 60 in a few key ways:

  • It builds aerobic fitness: A brisk pace trains your heart and lungs without needing a high-impact workout.
  • It supports daily stamina: Regular walking can make errands, stairs, and longer days feel more manageable.
  • It helps manage chronic-disease risk: Regular physical activity can help older adults live independently, improve quality of life, and prevent or manage chronic disease.
  • It adds meaningful daily movement: A 2022 meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health found that higher daily step counts were linked with lower all-cause mortality risk across 15 international cohorts. For adults 60 and older, the benefit appeared to level off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day.

That last point matters because a 30-minute walk may not cover the whole day’s movement by itself. It can be the anchor, then normal daily activity helps fill in the rest.

5 Daily Exercises Men Over 55 Need to Keep Muscle From Disappearing

Pace Matters More Than People Think

A casual walk still counts, especially if it gets someone moving more than they were before. For fitness, though, the walk should usually feel brisk enough to raise breathing and create a clear aerobic demand. The American Heart Association lists brisk walking at about 2.5 miles per hour or faster as moderate-intensity activity.

A simple way to judge the right pace:

  • Too easy: You can sing or talk without any change in breathing.
  • About right: You can speak in short sentences, but you can tell you’re working.
  • Too hard for a steady walk: You’re gasping, shortening your stride, or losing your normal walking rhythm.

The exact pace will vary. Hills, heat, fitness level, joint comfort, and walking surface all change how hard the same 30 minutes feels. The goal is to make the walk active enough to count as training while still leaving you able to recover and repeat it.

Where Walking Needs Backup

Walking is excellent aerobic work, but staying fit after 60 also requires strength and balance. The CDC recommends that older adults include aerobic activity, muscle-strengthening activity, and balance work each week.

Walking helps build stamina, but it doesn’t fully cover:

  • Muscle strength: Your legs, hips, back, and upper body still need resistance training.
  • Power: Walking doesn’t challenge quick force production the way step-ups, sit-to-stands, or light loaded movements can.
  • Upper-body strength: Your chest, shoulders, arms, and back need direct work.
  • Balance under different conditions: Flat-ground walking helps, but older adults also benefit from controlled balance practice.
  • Bone and joint resilience: Strength training gives the body a different loading signal than walking alone.

The LIFE Study is a good source here. It was a large randomized clinical trial in older adults at risk for mobility disability. The physical activity program included walking, resistance training, flexibility, and balance work, and it reduced major mobility disability compared with a health-education program.

A Simple Weekly Walking Plan After 60

A 30-minute walk becomes more useful when it has a little rhythm across the week. You don’t have to make every walk hard. Some days should feel brisk and purposeful, while others can stay easier so your body keeps moving without feeling run down. The goal is to build fitness you can repeat, not chase one perfect walk. Use the plan below as a simple starting point, then adjust the pace, terrain, or rest days based on how your body feels.

  • Monday: 30-minute brisk walk
  • Tuesday: 20-minute strength routine plus a short easy walk
  • Wednesday: 30-minute walk with intervals, alternating 1 minute brisk with 2 minutes comfortable
  • Thursday: 30-minute comfortable walk plus 5 minutes of balance work
  • Friday: 20-minute strength routine
  • Saturday: 30-minute walk on hills, trails, or varied terrain
  • Sunday: Easy walk, mobility work, or rest

This setup keeps walking as the anchor while still covering the pieces that help you stay fully fit after 60. The brisk walks support aerobic fitness, the strength days help preserve muscle, and the balance work gives your body practice staying steady. Keep it flexible enough to live with, and it becomes much easier to stay consistent.

5 Morning Exercises That Tighten Waist Thickening Faster Than Crunches After 50

What to Add If You Want to Stay Fully Fit

The strongest plan after 60 uses walking as the base and adds a few pieces around it. Walking builds the aerobic foundation. Strength work helps preserve muscle. Balance practice helps keep movement confident.

A complete weekly plan should include:

  • Brisk walking: Aim for the 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, using the CDC guideline as the baseline.
  • Strength training: Add two weekly sessions with moves like sit-to-stands, rows, step-ups, wall push-ups, glute bridges, and carries.
  • Balance work: Add short drills such as heel-to-toe walking, single-leg stands near a counter, or controlled step-backs.
  • Mobility work: Use gentle hip, ankle, and upper-back movement to keep walking comfortable.

That combination matches what the LIFE Study points toward: walking becomes more powerful when it sits inside a broader program that also includes strength, flexibility, and balance. Looking for more easy ways to lose fat? Here’s How Long Your Walking Workout Should Be To Shrink Belly Fat.

High-Stakes Chess: Assassins Target Weapons Chiefs Amid Ukraine Conflict Expansion

0

The escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine has taken a perilous new turn, as high-profile figures in the drone industry find themselves under attack. According to industry experts, operatives allegedly linked to intelligence services are increasingly targeting key executives and engineers, whose cutting-edge developments in drone technology are proving pivotal on the battlefield.

In one of the latest incidents, a car bomb detonated on August 4 near Yekaterinburg, severely injuring Vladimir Tkachuk, CEO of Russian drone maker Uraldronzavod, while also claiming the life of his driver. This information comes via Russian state news agency TASS, as reported by The Associated Press.

Uraldronzavod is renowned for producing the “Upyr,” or “Ghoul,” a sophisticated first-person-view attack drone actively deployed by Russian forces in Ukraine, marking it as a critical component of their military capabilities.

Adding to the tension, just days prior, another alarming incident unfolded when Andrei Cherezov, leader of a separate Russian drone firm, was shot three times in an overnight shooting on July 28-29 in Tula. This attempted assassination has yet to be publicly attributed to any specific party, as reported by the Ukrainian news outlet Pravda. The lack of definitive blame only adds to the tension and uncertainty surrounding these events.

Draganfly CEO Cameron Chell told News Media that the rise in attacks comes as Russia and Ukraine race for an edge in drone warfare, making the relatively small number of people responsible for developing new technology increasingly important targets.

“When you can’t take out all the distributed infrastructure, drone manufacturing leadership becomes the primary target,” Chell said.

“These strikes in Russia and Ukraine and Germany on founders, leaders, engineers of defense and, in particular, drone-type companies are down to drones and these companies having such an impact themselves.”

“Because drone technology evolves rapidly — often with significant iterations occurring every 10 to 30 days — targeting a key engineer, founder, or product lead creates immediate operational disruptions on the battlefield.”

“Taking out a particular engineer or taking out a particular leader can set a very important weapons program back quite some time and disrupt shipments to the front line,” Chell added.

German authorities have also arrested two suspected operatives accused of spying on a Bavarian drone manufacturer for Russian intelligence, while reports this month said the alleged operation included preparations to target company executive Stefan Thumann, according to Germany’s Die Zeit.

The case follows a reported 2024 plot disrupted by U.S. and German intelligence to target Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger.

Chell said as Ukraine and Russia push toward artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons systems, engineers developing those technologies are more strategically important.

“What we see in the Ukraine-Russia conflict is nobody in the loop — total autonomy is the direction things are going because it moves with more speed and precision,” Chell said.

“AI and total autonomy are the big innovations for the next 18 months, so a potential reason we could see more targeted activity against leaders is because Ukrainians have that technology advantage.”

“Targeting small drone companies is a relatively easy operation compared to targeting individuals in state-run weapons programs,” he said.

“It is a fairly inexpensive, low-risk tactic for intelligence agencies that yields an immediate impact on the battlefield, and that’s why we’ve seen this tactic.”

“It is a very interesting turn or tactic that’s being played by both sides here.”

Chell highlighted how Russia and Ukraine approach such plots differently.

“I wouldn’t suggest one side has an advantage over the other in terms of tactics, but psychologically, it has a deeper effect on the Russian side,” Chell said.

russia-drone-exec-putin

“The volume of drone advantage will remain with the Russians for the foreseeable future, but the innovation of drones, tactics, and technology lies with the Ukrainians right now.”

“Ukraine faces an existential threat, so they are ready for anything. Their tactics tend to be much more blunt — a direct shooter in a hallway or a car bomb,” he added.

“The Russian tactics tend to be much more state-organized, using old Cold War tactics: low-level contacts, extensive intelligence and surveillance ahead of time, and inserting into other countries like Germany,” he said.

“The Russians have a long-standing, well-established intelligence infrastructure dating back to World War II and the Cold War.”

As the drone manufacturing industry takes greater precautions, Chell maintained that threats against companies and individuals in the defense supply chain are receiving increased scrutiny.

“We are very cognizant of it, and we’re in contact with the proper authorities to make sure we’re taking precautions on both a cyber and physical level to ensure we’re at less risk,” he said.

“We certainly don’t take anything for granted.”

“There are training and programs in place to ensure executives have a level of safety, primarily around awareness, cybersecurity, and physical location protection,” Chell added before stating that the attacks and attempted assassinations have “heightened the conversation around it.”

“We as an industry are taking it with a measured amount more seriously,” he said.

Jannik Sinner’s Knee Injury Forces Cincinnati Open Withdrawal Ahead of US Open

0

Jannik Sinner has been dealt a setback just weeks ahead of the U.S. Open, as a right knee injury has compelled him to pull out of the Cincinnati Open.

Currently the World No. 1, Sinner made the difficult choice to withdraw after seeking advice from his medical team and trusted advisors, as he revealed in a statement distributed by the tournament.

“I’ve been struggling with my right knee, and despite diligent efforts with my medical team, I must acknowledge that I’m not yet fit to compete,” Sinner explained in his announcement. “It’s deeply disappointing not to join the competition in Cincinnati. I extend my best wishes to [tournament director] Bob [Moran] and his team for a fantastic and successful event. I’m eagerly looking forward to returning next year, as my current focus is on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.”

Last year at the U.S. Open, Sinner reached the finals but was bested by World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping four-set match in Queens. In 2024, Sinner clinched his maiden U.S. Open title with a victory over Taylor Fritz.

The eagerly awaited Grand Slam action is set to begin on August 30.

Sinner’s injury forced him out of his second straight major ATP event after he skipped the Canadian Open that was held in Montreal this week in order to “prioritize my health.”

The Italian has not competed since he captured his sixth major championship in July when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final at Wimbledon.

Sinner is not the only one dealing with injury lately.

Alcaraz hasn’t played since April as he’s recovered from a wrist injury and will also be skipping the Cincinnati Open, he announced last week.

“We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible,” Moran said in a statement at the time. “We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.”

Deepening Rift: Unpacking the Worldview Divide Straining Australia-China Relations

0

According to Australia’s former ambassador to China, Graham Fletcher, a genuine partnership between Australia and China may remain elusive due to fundamentally differing worldviews, making efforts toward such a goal seemingly futile.

In a detailed analysis presented to the Lowy Institute, Fletcher highlighted potential disruptions to the “modest new normal” in bilateral relations. He pointed to unpredictable factors, such as a potential Chinese military move on Taiwan, which could further exacerbate tensions.

The transition of Australian government leadership following the 2022 federal elections provided a much-needed reset in the strained Australia-China relationship. Despite this, moments of tension persisted, notably through provocative military maneuvers involving Chinese forces, Fletcher explained.

International outcry was ignited when China launched a ballistic missile into the South Pacific in July, an event that unfolded shortly after Australia and Fiji entered a landmark mutual defense agreement.

Amidst diplomatic strains that escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic under the leadership of then Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Albanese administration moved to soothe relations with China, aiming for a more stable diplomatic footing.

China slapped $20 billion in trade sanctions on Australian exports, measures that have slowly been wound back.

China is Australia’s largest trading partner and is the destination for about a third of the nation’s exports.

Fletcher said China had not given up hope of drawing Australia closer into its orbit, while Australia was more focused on consolidating its current relationship.

“But this relationship is unlikely ever to become genuinely close — like the relaxed, intimate fellowship Australia enjoys with like-minded partners elsewhere in its region and beyond,” he said.

“The gulf in terms of diverging world views and national security agendas is simply too wide.

“It would be pointless for Canberra to pursue such a goal; it recognises this and is realistic.”

The “mismatch” of world views made the relationship vulnerable to disruption, with key risks including another round of serious disagreements or the cataclysm of a conflict, including the use of force against Taiwan.

“An upheaval or conflict is always a possibility, though not in my opinion a strong one at present,” the former diplomat said.

China considers Taiwan, a self-governed democracy, part of its territory.

Australia would be on firmer ground when facing China if policies had cross-party support and politicians did not “seek to exploit difficulties for domestic advantage”, Fletcher said.

“Bipartisanship produces policy consistency and limits China’s ability to play games within the Australian system,” he said.

Fletcher was Australia’s ambassador to China from 2019 to 2023 and led the negotiating team in 2014 that helped seal a free-trade agreement between the nations.

Jared Padalecki Removes Supportive Message to Perez Hilton

Jared Padalecki, known for his role in Supernatural, received significant criticism after tweeting his support for Perez Hilton. The actor expressed that Hilton was ‘in my thoughts’ and encouraged him with ‘you got this’ after the notorious gossip blogger’s recent hospitalization due to self-harm.

The 44-year-old actor advised the 48-year-old Hilton to ‘surround yourself’ with ‘love and support’ in light of his ‘severe mental health crisis.’ This crisis, witnessed during a disturbing, blood-filled live stream, led to Hilton’s TikTok account being banned.

Fans of Padalecki quickly reminded him of Hilton’s, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, history of malicious behavior. This includes bullying, forcibly outing LGBTQIA celebrities, and openly speculating about others’ health and pregnancy situations.

The 6-foot-5 Texan – who boasts 14.3 million social media followers – deleted his original X post and tweeted on Sunday morning: ‘I didn’t know. It’s been brought to my attention. I’m sorry.’

‘To give more detail re: my post wishing someone well… I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about his past,’ Padalecki continued.

Padalecki explained his stance saying, ‘I had heard of him. Obviously. I had heard that he hadn’t exactly “been kind” to me in the past. So, my thought is always to give grace and forgiveness to those who may have tried to “harm” you. In my experience, it usually works out better than holding a grudge or wishing punishment on someone else.’

The Boys guest star continued: ‘That having been said, I TRULY didn’t know ANYTHING about the extent to what he has done. That’s my bad. On my life, I have never in my life, not once, looked him up or gone to one of his sites. I simply thought he was a “tabloid” type of sensationalist journalist.

‘I DO NOT stand for, or support, ANY of the actions I just now found out that he has committed. Full stop. I’m sorry if my words caused any harm. And, I hope you ALL are well out there, and taking care of yourselves.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to Padalecki’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Two years ago, The Rookie guest star revealed he used to suffer from dramatic suicidal ideation so badly it prompted him to check himself into a mental health clinic in 2015.

‘I called my wife and she said, “Get home,”‘ Padalecki told the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast.

‘And so, I got home, went to a clinic for a couple weeks and looked into it and haven’t been suicidal since – not for a moment.’

The Gilmore Girls alum went on to launch his Always Keep Fighting campaign through Represent.com – which used to support people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

Padalecki also probably related to Hilton as a father-of-three – having welcomed son Thomas, 14, son Austin, 12, and daughter Odette, nine – during his 16-year marriage to his Supernatural and Walker co-star, Genevieve Cortese.

The PHP co-host’s three children – son Mario, 13, daughter Mia, 11, and daughter Mayte, eight – by surrogate, niece and sister were all inside his Miami-area home the night he used a knife to slash himself on social media.
