On X, formerly known as Twitter, Clarkson urged her 8.8 million followers to visit the Brooklyn shop “if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman.” Her remark referenced the film’s famous shopping scene, in which store employees dismiss Vivian before she returns carrying bags from rival retailers and makes clear that they misjudged her.

The post gained momentum almost immediately. Fans directed critical reviews and angry messages toward Art of Play, prompting the store’s owner to respond publicly. Even after the business offered its version of events, Clarkson continued to challenge the explanation.

The store’s side of the story

Art of Play released a detailed Instagram statement the following day, disputing key parts of Clarkson’s account. The shop said the bird she noticed was a unique singing-and-dancing automaton used during its magic performances and was not available for purchase. According to the store, the $15,000 figure referred to another automaton owned by an artist who might have considered selling it.

The store also addressed Clarkson’s claim that employees directed her toward cheaper products. Art of Play said staff showed her another option because it happened to be available in the shop, not because they believed she could not pay for the more expensive piece. Although the statement defended the employees, it acknowledged that the interaction described by Clarkson would understandably feel hurtful. The business stopped short of confirming that events unfolded as she recalled them.

Clarkson did not accept the store’s account. After Art of Play shared its statement, she returned to X and accused the business of both rudeness and dishonesty, particularly over its claim that the bird she asked about was not for sale.

Directly responding to the shop’s explanation, Clarkson wrote: “so the whole conversation we had when I asked you if it was for sale whilst pointing to the price tag hanging on the wall with the title Singing Bird didn’t happen as you elevator eyed me.”

Art of Play issued another message early Monday, thanking supporters and welcoming new visitors who had discovered the store amid the online dispute. The owner also expressed hope that the matter could eventually be resolved directly with Clarkson, saying they would like to “clear things up with Kelly someday.”

The incident has divided online audiences. Loyal customers describe Art of Play as a friendly shop staffed by welcoming people, while some Clarkson supporters believe she was clearly treated disrespectfully. Others suspect the encounter may have been misunderstood and are debating whether a celebrity should publicly identify a small business, even when she feels wronged. For now, the competing accounts remain unresolved.
