Fox News Veteran Warns Republicans Ahead of Midterm Elections

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume has issued a pointed warning to Republicans before next month’s midterm elections, saying the party could face a sweeping “washout.”

Speaking Wednesday on the network’s Special Report, Hume compared President Donald Trump’s nationwide campaign appearances on behalf of Republican candidates with former President Bill Clinton’s efforts before the 1994 elections, when the GOP seized unified control of Congress.

“I think Republicans have to consider the possibility that this could become something like 1980, when Republicans won a landslide that nobody saw coming and Ronald Reagan became president,” Hume told host Bret Baier.

He then pointed to 1994, recalling how Clinton, a Democrat and then-president, traveled across the country to campaign for his party much as Trump is doing now.

Republicans that year promoted a platform known as the Contract for America, while Clinton branded it the “Contract on America,” Hume said.

“I was covering the White House at the time, and I’ll never forget thinking that maybe he was making progress,” Hume recalled.

Clinton had the enormous platform that comes with the presidency, drew large crowds and campaigned aggressively. Yet Democrats and the president’s party were “absolutely slaughtered” in the election, Hume said, as Republicans won control of the House for the first time in decades.

“Republicans have to worry that something similar could happen in this race,” Hume said. “They may not simply lose the closest contests; they could face a major washout.”

“I’m not saying it will happen,” he added, “but I think it could happen.”

Hume later observed that Trump had placed himself at the heart of the Republican election strategy.

“That’s fine if the goal is simply to maximize Republican turnout,” he said.

But Hume said recent polling suggested Trump’s support among Republicans had fallen since Election Day. His overall approval rating was also about 36 percent, he noted—meaning a large majority of Americans disapproved of his performance.

“That is really bad at this stage, when he is out there front and center,” Hume said. “It may cause people around him to question whether he should be playing such a prominent role, given where his standing is.”

Hume’s comments came after a new Fox News poll found that a clear majority of Americans viewed Democrats as better equipped than Republicans to address several major issues.

Democrats held leads over Republicans on foreign policy, 54 percent to 45 percent; gas prices, 55 percent to 43 percent; and inflation, 57 percent to 41 percent, according to the survey.

A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll found that roughly 78 percent of Americans blamed Trump’s policies—including import tariffs and the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran—for higher prices that have been rising faster than wages.

In an effort to boost voter participation, Trump on Tuesday reiterated his promise to provide $5,000 to every adult American.

Is it fair for Trump to promise cash payouts to win votes, or is this hurting democracy?

During his Tuesday night speech, Trump said he is ‘going to give all adult citizens in the United States $5,000’ if the Republicans hold both chambers of Congress in November.

‘You gotta spend it in the United States of America,’ the president added. ‘I don’t want you going to China.’

The president made the same promise at previous events like the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas in early September, calling it the ‘Trump Dividend.’
