Vernon Kay has explained why Moby’s acclaimed album Play is linked to one of the worst holiday memories he shares with his wife, Tess Daly.

The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show host recalled the ill-fated experience ahead of Moby’s appearance on the station. During a fishing trip in Tenerife, severe seasickness left Vernon unable to hear the album without feeling unwell.

While discussing the memory on air, Vernon made clear that the excursion had been far from relaxing, as rough seas caused chaos for those on board.

He said: “Can’t listen to that Moby Play album, I cannot listen to that, because we, Tess and I, went on a holiday together to Tenerife, and we went on a fishing trip. And the waves were terrible.”

Vernon said the turbulent conditions proved too much for everyone taking part in the fishing trip, with the boat’s constant movement leaving the group struggling to stay well.

He said: “Every single person on the fishing trip, about ten of us. Every single person, I’m not even lying. I’m not exaggerating. I am telling you the truth. Every single person was sicky, sicky, poo, poo.”

According to the presenter, the passengers were so ill that some were sick over the side of the boat, while others rushed to use the shared toilet.

Adding to the misery, the music playing during the trip permanently connected Moby’s album with the ordeal.

Vernon said: “Either over the side, or in the communal toilet, it was grim. And the music playing in the background was Moby’s Play album.”

The experience has had a lasting effect. Vernon said that even a single song from Play can instantly bring back the sensation of being on the rough sea.

He said: “So every time I hear a single track from that, I am swaying like a flag in the breeze. It’s horrendous.”

The story was shared shortly after Vernon marked the 22nd birthday of his eldest daughter, Phoebe, live on Radio 2 and reflected on how quickly she has grown up.

During a conversation with fellow presenter Sara Cox on Friday, October 16, Vernon revealed that Phoebe’s birthday had arrived.

“It’s our eldest daughter’s birthday today,” he said, confirming that she was turning 22 before asking: “Where? Where has that time gone?”

Vernon later posted a collection of photographs on social media to celebrate Phoebe’s milestone. His message read: “Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY!!! 22 Time flies!! A joy watching you become the woman you are!”

Phoebe is Vernon and Tess’s eldest daughter. The former couple also have a teenage daughter, Amber.

Vernon and Tess announced their separation in May, saying they “remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority”.
