Driver Fatally Shot While Crossing George Washington Bridge

NEW YORK – A 46-year-old man was fatally shot while driving across the George Washington Bridge late Tuesday, triggering a major traffic backup during the final stretch of the evening commute on the vital link between New York and New Jersey.

Police responding to reports of gunfire on the upper level of the bridge’s New Jersey-bound side shortly after 7 p.m. found the driver unconscious inside his vehicle. He had suffered a gunshot wound.

The victim was identified as Koran Irvine, of Valley Cottage, New York. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Investigators have made no arrests and have not disclosed a possible motive.

Irvine was an employee of Con Edison, which described the killing in a statement as a “senseless act of violence.”

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him,” the utility said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the bridge, said the lanes closed during the investigation reopened roughly five hours after the shooting.

Since opening in 1931, the landmark double-decked bridge has carried traffic high above the Hudson River. About 100 million vehicles travel between New Jersey and Manhattan via the bridge each year, according to the Port Authority, which considers it the busiest bridge in the world. Cameras cover the span and its approaches.

The bridge’s approaches are notoriously challenging to navigate, with drivers frequently moving across congested lanes and adding to the severe traffic that can occur even without a major incident.
