Marshals Exclusive Clip: Who Will Replace Pete “Cal” Calvin During His Medical Leave?

Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) may be refusing to consider how long he can keep working while undergoing chemotherapy, but his colleagues are already confronting that reality. Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) showed her support by turning up for Cal’s first treatment, despite his telling her not to come. Now, in this exclusive clip from this week’s Marshals, Cal must select an interim replacement before taking medical leave.

The scene opens as Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) sits down in Cal’s office. “You’re looking good, Calvin,” Gifford says. “What’d you expect?” Cal replies with a faint chuckle. “That’s just something you say to people in your circumstance,” Gifford admits.

Sensing where the conversation is headed, Cal cuts to the chase. “So, what brings you here, Harry?” Gifford shifts uneasily before explaining that he has come to offer his full support—and discuss who will replace Cal during his medical leave. Cal leans back, unsettled. “That’s a ways down the road, no?” he asks.

“If all things go according to plan,” Gifford responds. Cal’s expression turns ashen. “I know that sounds cold, but the president appointed me to make sure Montana stays safe. My elite unit stays elite, even without you,” Gifford continues.

“Phil Berenger in Tulsa,” Cal quickly suggests. “That’d be my choice. He’s a solid operator. He could keep this team in line.” Gifford pauses before admitting that Berenger is a good man, but says he would prefer to choose someone from within the unit. Cal raises his eyebrows. “Deputy Cruz seems right to me,” Gifford says.

“Andrea?” Cal asks, clearly taken aback. “Look, she’s a great Marshal, but she’s still a little green when it comes to leading.” Gifford remains firm. “Coach her up,” he says. Following the Clegg captivity, Cruz has become a rising star in Washington, D.C., Gifford explains. Promoting her would also show senior officials the strength of the talent he has developed.

“Takes a steady hand to point the tip of the spear, Harry,” Cal says. Just then, Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) appears at the office door and steps inside. “Speak of the devil,” Gifford jokes. Ignoring his remark, Cruz gets straight to business: The suspect they arrested the previous night is asking for a plea deal. “So, what’s he got to trade?” Cal asks. “Just a top 15 fugitive: a serial bomber, Rudy Carpenter,” Cruz replies. Both men immediately sit up.

“Carpenter’s a big-ass fish,” Cruz says. “More like Cal’s white whale,” Gifford counters, shifting in his seat. He reminds Cal that the failure to capture Carpenter on the mountaintop—and allowing him to escape—still reflects on Cal and his unit. Cal leans back, gazing at the ceiling with a faint smile. “Deputy Cruz just gave you a shot at redemption,” Gifford says.

Will Cal finally capture Rudy Carpenter? And will Gifford name Cruz as Cal’s temporary replacement despite his objections? Find out in an all-new episode of Marshals, airing Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
