Florida Woman Accused of Setting Man on Fire After Argument, Leaving Him With Burns Over 80% of His Body

A Florida woman allegedly asked to borrow a lighter before setting a man on fire during a confrontation Saturday, leaving him with severe burns across most of his body, authorities said.

Tanisha Shelton, 45, had reportedly been involved in a heated argument with 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis several hours before the attack, according to a police report obtained by CBS.

The dispute ended when Shelton left the area, but she allegedly warned that she would return with someone to assault Mathis, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

Police said Shelton returned hours later with a bucket containing a plastic bag filled with an accelerant.

She allegedly asked a witness for a lighter, then poured the accelerant over Mathis and set him on fire, according to investigators.

Emergency responders arrived around 6 p.m. near Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue, where they found Mathis unconscious and suffering from extensive burns, authorities said.

Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital determined that Mathis had second- and third-degree burns covering approximately 80% of his body. He remained in critical condition and was not expected to survive, officials said.

As Shelton tried to leave the scene, one witness reportedly used pepper spray against her, police said.

Information provided by additional witnesses helped officers identify Shelton, locate her and take her into custody, according to the police report.

Shelton is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and faces charges of attempted murder and arson, jail records show.

No attorney information for Shelton was immediately available.
