When Will Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Be Released From Prison?

Elizabeth Holmes has spent more than three years in a federal prison camp in Texas, but the former Theranos CEO may leave behind prison walls sooner than her original sentence suggested.

Holmes—whose story is explored in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s hit documentary You Can See Everything—was sentenced in 2022 to 11 years and three months in prison after being convicted of defrauding investors in her failed blood-testing startup, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The mother of two began serving her sentence the following year. A judge shortened the term in March, and Holmes is expected to move from prison to a halfway house within the next year.

Here is what to know about Elizabeth Holmes’ prison sentence, projected release date and possible transfer to a halfway house:

Elizabeth Holmes Falsely Represented Theranos’ Success to Investors

Before Theranos collapsed, Holmes was one of Silicon Valley’s most celebrated entrepreneurs. After dropping out of Stanford University, she founded the company in 2003 with a bold promise: its proprietary Edison device could perform hundreds of medical tests using only a few drops of blood.

The purported breakthrough attracted influential backers and millions of dollars in investment. As Theranos’ valuation soared, Holmes became known as the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire. That image began to unravel in 2015, when The Wall Street Journal published an investigation reporting that the company’s technology did not work as advertised.

Federal prosecutors said Holmes knew the Edison produced inaccurate and unreliable results, yet continued telling investors that the device was capable of delivering on Theranos’ promises.

“Holmes consistently provided glowing but false representations to investors and potential investors about the analyzer’s progress and capabilities,” federal prosecutors wrote after her sentencing. “She falsely represented to investors that multiple major pharmaceutical companies had comprehensively evaluated Theranos and had validated its technology, and she provided investors with reports bearing logos from pharmaceutical companies, falsely suggesting the pharmaceutical companies endorsed Theranos.”

What Was Elizabeth Holmes Convicted Of?

Once the company’s claims were exposed, federal prosecutors charged Holmes and her former partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, in June 2018.

In January 2022, a jury found Holmes guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit investor fraud and three counts of wire fraud involving investors.

Later that year, she received an 11-year, three-month sentence. Holmes reported to FPC Bryan, a minimum-security federal prison camp for women located roughly 90 miles outside Houston, on May 30, 2023. She entered prison after welcoming her second child, daughter Invicta, with her partner, Billy Evans, The New York Times reported.

Holmes and Balwani—who was sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison—were also ordered to pay $452 million in restitution jointly.

Judge Reduces Elizabeth Holmes’ Prison Sentence

In a 2025 interview with People, Holmes described incarceration as “hell and torture.” She added, “Human beings are not made to be in cells.”

Holmes received a reduction earlier this year after a judge cut her sentence from 135 months to 123 months. According to a court document obtained by Oxygen, the decision followed a finding that she had not caused her investors “substantial financial hardship.”

“To be clear, this sentence reduction does not diminish the enormity of Holmes’s crimes, nor does it ignore the significant negative impact her conduct has had on the community,” United States District Judge Edward J. Davila wrote. “The hundreds of millions of dollars in losses caused by Holmes’s fraud speak for themselves. And though unquantifiable, the echoes of the immense reputational damage that the innovative industry in Silicon Valley suffered as a consequence of Holmes’s deception still reverberate to this day.”

When Will Elizabeth Holmes Get Out of Prison?

The Bureau of Prisons now lists Holmes’ projected release date as February 22, 2030. However, she may spend only part of the remaining sentence inside a prison facility.

In September, one of Holmes’ victims told NBC News that he received a notice stating she was expected to transfer in August 2027 to the Austin Transitional Center, a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas. She would serve the remainder of her sentence there.

Oxygen contacted the Bureau of Prisons for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Halfway houses, also known as residential reentry centers, are designed to help people in custody prepare to return to the community. According to the organization’s website, residents can seek employment, access counseling and rebuild community connections.

“She will be able to go to work and come back. She’s not allowed to go out or party,” a Department of Justice source told People. “She will be able to have visitors and they don’t monitor them 24/7. No one is allowed to sleep over or have overnight guests, but she will be able to have visitors and her kids.”
