Inset: Irene Miller. Background: Florida authorities arrest Miller after she allegedly left her four children unsupervised while traveling to Las Vegas (Osceola County Sheriff’s Office).
A Florida woman is accused of leaving her four children home alone for several days while she went to Las Vegas for work. During her absence, authorities say her 9-year-old son dropped a dumbbell on his head and suffered injuries.
Irene Miller, 50, was charged with four counts of child neglect, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Deputies were called to a residence in the 3200 block of Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee at about 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. A child had contacted authorities to report that her 9-year-old brother had been injured after dropping the weight on himself.
When a deputy arrived, the children — ages 14, 12, 11 and 9 — were allegedly without an adult present. Miller reportedly told the deputy by phone that she was working in Las Vegas. Investigators said she had left Florida on Oct. 18 and planned to return Oct. 23.

Miller allegedly said a babysitter was supposed to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children prepare for school and return in the evening to check on them. However, deputies said the sitter did not remain at the home overnight.
The injured boy was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released. Authorities said his three siblings appeared to be in good health.
Miller was arrested after she allegedly returned to Florida on Friday. She was booked into the Osceola County Jail and has since posted bond. Information about her next court appearance was not immediately available.
“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect,” Sheriff Chris Blackmon said. “These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children.”
