Joe Buck and Troy Aikman’s ESPN Feud Deepens After Awkward Photo Shows Them Avoiding Each Other in Booth

A wide divide between Monday Night Football commentators Troy Aikman and Joe Buck was impossible to miss in the Seattle broadcast booth, adding to speculation about the longtime partners’ increasingly strained relationship.

The pair appeared side by side during ESPN’s customary opening segment for the Seahawks-Bears matchup Monday night. However, a photo captured well before kickoff showed a strikingly different setup.

Aikman was seen sipping a drink and watching the field from one end of ESPN’s booth, while Buck sat at the opposite end. A considerable stretch of empty space separated the two broadcasters.

The image alone might not have attracted much attention. But with reports pointing to a contractual divide at ESPN, the photo shared on X by Seahawks fan Mark Harnes quickly took on added significance.

“Aikman hates Buck lol,” Harnes wrote in the post, after taking the picture from the stands at Lumen Field on Monday night.

Much like the previous week, viewers said they could detect the apparent tension between the commentators on television, prompting a wave of amateur body-language analysis from NFL fans.

“You can cut the tension with a knife,” one fan posted on X.

Another viewer wrote, “I can feel the tension between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. There is a lot of lacking eye [contact] with Aikman, lol.”

Others suggested that Aikman looked “fed up” while sitting beside Buck.

Aikman and Buck remain scheduled to call ESPN’s first Super Bowl broadcast this February, but their partnership could end after that game. Buck has reportedly agreed to a new deal with ESPN, while Aikman is nearing free agency—a situation that has allegedly affected their on-air chemistry.

Reports also indicate that the relationship had been deteriorating for years, well before the pair became embroiled in a highly publicized confrontation in Los Angeles last month.

Front Office Sports first reported the argument, which was later confirmed by The Daily Mail. The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand subsequently provided additional details, reporting that the dispute began when Buck confronted Aikman over what he viewed as tension between the two.

“You are not going to f***ing talk to me?” Buck reportedly said, according to the account. Aikman was believed to be frustrated by stalled contract negotiations with ESPN at the time. “I’m not the reason you don’t have a contract,” Buck reportedly added.

Buck followed Aikman from Fox to ESPN four years ago to form the network’s new Monday Night Football team, with the contracts costing ESPN a reported $165 million combined at the time. Those agreements were set to expire after ESPN’s first Super Bowl broadcast this February from SoFi Stadium—the same venue where the duo aired their grievances on October 12.

According to The Athletic, the dispute centered in part on Buck’s reported extension with ESPN, believed to be worth $108 million over six years. Aikman, who had not received a comparable extension, reportedly felt Buck bore some responsibility for the perceived slight.

Sources told The Athletic that the conflict followed years of turnover in the Monday Night Football booth, including a series of hires and firings that the broadcasters blamed on one another. Buck reportedly believed ESPN had dismissed staff members who had clashed with the sometimes-temperamental Aikman, while the Dallas Cowboys legend viewed his unresolved contract situation as further evidence that Buck had been exerting influence behind the scenes.

‘I just never thought you’d do it to me,’ Aikman, 59, reportedly told the 57-year-old Buck, whom he’s worked with since 2002.

Buck, a decorated announcer and son of legendary St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck, reportedly framed the problem as a lack of professionalism on Aikman’s part.

‘They got rid of [the producers] because you were screaming at them,’ Buck told Aikman, according to The Athletic.

This confrontation wasn’t a complete surprise. Producers reportedly noticed tension between the two for years, sources told Marchand. And as Aikman reportedly told his former Fox Sports colleagues at an event in 2025: ‘In case anyone is wondering, the grass isn’t always greener.’

The comment appeared to be a reference to his ongoing tenure at ESPN.

Even moments before this month’s in-booth confrontation, Aikman was reportedly talking with network chairman Jimmy Pitaro about his working relationship with Buck. Asked if he was capable of continuing to call games with his long-time partner, Aikman told Pitaro he could, The Athletic reported.

Regardless, according to Marchand, there is an obvious pending divorce between Aikman and Buck, and ESPN has clearly sided with the latter.

The Daily Mail reached out to Buck and Aikman’s respective agents at CAA, as well as ESPN spokespeople, none of whom responded to requests for comment.
