BBC Radio Tees has lost a cherished voice with the passing of Dave Llewellyn at the age of 57, following a brief illness. Known for his distinctive contributions to traffic and travel updates, Llewellyn spent over 20 years captivating listeners as the “eye in the sky” from a small aircraft. His daughter, Amy, shared the sad news, describing her father as “remarkably modest and generous,” someone who always had time for both friends and strangers.
Amy reflected further on her father’s passions outside of broadcasting. “Music and family were everything to him. His true gift was evident when he played his keyboards, synthesizers, and bass,” she noted. “As a father and husband, he was endlessly loving, always going above and beyond to bring us joy.”
The family dog, Cupid, will also feel his absence keenly, having often shared Llewellyn’s generosity in the form of sausage sandwiches.
Heartfelt tributes have been flowing from his colleagues. Fellow presenter Amy Oakden, during her Friday breakfast show, remembered him warmly: “Dave’s kindness and warmth left a lasting impression. He was truly a legend.”
Meanwhile, Radio Tees producer Sarah Robinson became emotional as she attempted to honor his memory on air: “What can I even say about Dave?”
“Worst taste in shirts I have ever seen, he wore terrible shirts, made bad coffee, the worst coffee I had ever tasted in my whole life, but Dave was relentlessly cheerful and positive and never came into the office without having a smile on his face.”
BBC Radio Tees said in a statement: “We’re really sad to say that our brilliant colleague and friend, Dave Llewellyn, has passed away following a short illness.
“You may know Dave best as being the voice of traffic and travel in the region for more than 20 years, as well as co-presenting a popular gardening show on Sunday mornings before becoming an excellent producer at BBC Radio Tees. We send our love to his wife, Ange, his daughter, Amy and all of his friends and family. You’ll be missed, Dave.”
Dave leaves behind his daughter Amy and his wife Ange, along with their dog Cupid.
