Vernon Kay was “knocked” off his feet after a Strictly Come Dancing star opened up to him with a tearful admission about her life. Scottish comedian Susan Calman, who competed on Strictly in 2017 with Kevin Clifton, poured her heart out on air as she spoke about a song that reminds her to “live now”.
Vernon Kay found himself deeply moved when a former Strictly Come Dancing star shared a heartfelt and emotional confession with him. Scottish comedian Susan Calman, who danced alongside Kevin Clifton on Strictly in 2017, opened up during a poignant moment on Kay’s BBC Radio 2 show, revealing how a particular song serves as a powerful reminder for her to “live now.”
Susan’s candid revelations unfolded during the Tracks of My Years segment on April 30, when she joined Vernon in the studio. Among her chosen tracks was Fleetwood Mac’s deeply evocative 1975 ballad “Landslide.” Susan expressed her lifelong admiration for the iconic rock band, admitting that “Landslide” consistently brings her to tears. With emotion in her voice, she said, “Fleetwood Mac is the one band whose albums I have always purchased. The song ‘Landslide’ especially moves me to tears. It’s the line, ‘Even children get older.’ It just…”

Susan’s voice started to crack with emotion, but she insisted to Vernon that she was “fine”. She continued: “It’s the passing of time. It’s the regrets I have of not enjoying my life, cos there are times where I have not enjoyed my life, and I should have.
“Why didn’t I? Why didn’t I enjoy that moment? Travelling round the world, being in beautiful places, and not loving what I was doing because of something stupid.”
Although Susan’s voice trembled with emotion, she assured Vernon that she was “fine.” She elaborated, “It’s about the passage of time. It’s the regret of not having enjoyed my life as much as I should have. There are moments I didn’t appreciate, and I wish I had.”
“I don’t feel like I became who I am and comfortable with myself until I passed 40. It was terrible before I was 40. Yeah, I didn’t know who I was, and I was trying to be someone else; I was trying… And then I got to 40, and I thought, ‘Well, okay, I think I’m getting to where I should be’.”

Susan explained that when she hit 50, she felt that she finally knew who she was. Yet, it’s only now, at the age of 51, that she feels “truly comfortable” with who she is.
Vernon confessed: “Wow, that’s knocked me off my feet.” Susan theorised that there was a point where you “stop trying” to impress people, adding that when she turned 50, she reached a stage where she simply says: “This is what I do – there you go.”
Susan went on to say that, for her, Landslide reminds her to “live now”. The comedian went on to share that she’s reached a point in life where she feels “more content” than she’s ever been.
She then became emotional again as she revealed that her father had died last year. Susan described her dad’s death as a “real wake-up call”, and as the song started to play, she declared that “life’s short”, so we should “live it”.
Later in the broadcast, Vernon revealed that he and Susan had since exchanged numbers, and are planning to “get a game of golf in”.
