In Washington state, a man opened fire at a teen’s birthday celebration, fatally shooting two cousins. He later told police that it was “their fault” because they were “smiling at his girlfriend” and making what he considered “prolonged eye contact,” which he interpreted as flirting, according to authorities.

Andres Carrasco-Sanchez, aged 49 and hailing from Kelso, now faces charges that include murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and attempting to evade police in the shooting deaths of Cristian Segundo and Serjio Segundo.

In an arrest report acquired by local ABC station KATU, Carrasco-Sanchez informed detectives that he attended a quinceañera—a traditional celebration for a 15-year-old girl—on Saturday night when he noticed the two victims interacting with his girlfriend in a manner he found inappropriate.

Reportedly, Carrasco-Sanchez left the event, went home to retrieve a firearm, and then returned to the scene, where he shot the Segundo cousins while they stood outside.

The affidavit, as cited by KATU, notes, “Andres explained he felt both victims and a third unidentified individual were making prolonged eye contact and smiling at his girlfriend, which he perceived as flirting.”

Asked what he thought about killing the two victims, Carrasco-Sanchez allegedly told police, “It was their fault, they started it.”

The shooting unfolded at an Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers hall in Longview, according to cops. Carrasco-Sanchez allegedly fled after opening fire on the Segundos and was arrested following a police chase, during which he tried throwing the gun he used out his car window.

“They don’t deserve this,” said Cristian Segundo’s girlfriend, Violeta, in an interview with local Fox affiliate KPTV. She said Cristian left the party with her earlier in the evening but he chose to return later that night.

“I don’t know why he went back,” Violeta told KPTV. “Why did he have to go back?”

Carrasco-Sanchez is being held without bond. He is due to appear in court Thursday.
