Hilton Head Council Evaluates Key William Hilton Parkway Plan

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. () — In a significant move on Tuesday, leaders on Hilton Head Island have inched closer to spearheading what promises to be one of the largest transportation initiatives the island has ever seen.

The latest draft plan reflects extensive feedback from both local officials and the community since conversations kicked off earlier this year. Designed to steer anticipated developments, the master plan aims to enhance the William Hilton Parkway corridor, stretching from Windmill Harbour to the area of Spanish Wells Road.

Traffic woes are at the heart of safety concerns, with official reports indicating that congestion is a factor in nearly half of the accidents at several key intersections along the parkway. This places safety enhancements high on the list of priorities.

Mayor Alan Perry of Hilton Head Island emphasized the urgency of progressing with the plans, underscoring potential benefits for the community.

“The absolute last thing anyone wants is for an accident to result in injury or a tragic loss of life,” Perry stated. “Delaying decisions in this arena carries real risks that we simply cannot afford to take.”

The full proposed project build-out is broken into sections estimated to cost over one hundred million dollars in total. The master corridor plan is focused on the safety, mobility, community, and aesthetics for all residents and visitors on the island.

According to SCDOT 2016 – 2024 data, there were over a thousand collisions and numerous fatalities and over 80 major injuries on the corridor.

No decision was made Tuesday; town leaders said they hope to have approval of the resolution in the August meeting.
