URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A team of researchers at the University of Illinois has pioneered an innovative technique for detecting cancer in lymph nodes, leveraging the power of ultraviolet and infrared camera technology.

Under the leadership of engineering professor Viktor Gruev, this groundbreaking method has been in development for six years. Gruev, along with numerous students working in the university’s Biosensor lab, collaborated closely with partners from the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, Carle Foundation Hospital, and The Cancer Center at Illinois to bring this project to fruition.

In a recent clinical study involving over 30 cancer surgeries, these advanced cameras demonstrated a remarkable 97% accuracy in identifying cancerous lymph nodes. Additionally, they achieved an 89% success rate in detecting non-cancerous nodes, as reported by Gruev.
