ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Over the weekend, nine teens found themselves in handcuffs after altercations erupted during an unapproved event dubbed “Teen Takeover” at ICON Park, as disclosed by Orange County Sheriff John Mina on Monday.

According to Sheriff Mina, the charges these teenagers face range from battery and resisting arrest to assaulting a law enforcement officer. “These are serious charges that carry significant consequences,” he emphasized.

Anticipating a large gathering due to online discussions, Sheriff Mina had already positioned deputies at ICON Park before the teens began to arrive.

During a press conference, News 6 reporter Mike Valente questioned Sheriff Mina about any recurring themes in the interactions between the detained teens and deputies that might explain the allure of the “Teen Takeover” event.

Mina responded, “There wasn’t a particular reason, just that it was an event where they expected to find many peers, providing them with something to do.”

He said that more than 1,000 teenagers showed up before the situation devolved and fights broke out. Two deputies suffered minor injuries as they tried to break up the fights.

“It’s hard to corral,” Mina said. “But eventually we were able to get them to clear out of the park.”

Mina also said he is aware of intentions for another “Teen Takeover” on May 9.

“To those people who might plan on going there, just know that we are going to have dozens and dozens of deputy sheriffs there,” Mina said. “We will have transport vans ready to take you away in handcuffs if you break the law.”
