ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — St. Pete Beach City officials are on the cusp of finalizing a new resolution that affects parking rates, following a recent increase of 50 cents across the board. This move has stirred a mix of reactions from residents and visitors alike.

“You kind of expect it,” remarked Don Angelina, on his way to enjoy the beach. “It would be nice if it went down, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon.”

For many, like resident Laurie Lakhani, the increased rates are just a sign of the times. “It is a lot, but you pay a lot for any experience today,” she noted, reflecting a resigned acceptance of the rising costs.

In addition to the rate increase, the proposed resolution will tackle parking regulations during major events and holidays, such as Labor Day or the Fourth of July. The city manager will have the discretion to set a flat rate ranging from $40 to $75, depending on the specific occasion.

“It should be pretty much set so people don’t get a surprise that they’re not expecting,” Lakhani emphasized. “Because people do budget and things are expensive.”

Weekday rates are $5 an hour, and weekend rates start on Friday at $6 an hour. According to the city the rates would help parking spots turn over and generate nearly $2-million for the city.

Currently, parking rates are set a dollar higher for a busier beach season. It runs through the end of April. Beach goers said they were hopeful new rates could make it easier to find a spot in busy lots.

“There’s not enough but there’s nothing that can be done about that. You can’t make more land,” said Lakhani.
