Spoiler Alert: Insights into “NCIS: Origins” Season 2, Episode 18 — “Hollywood Ending”
Curious about the origin of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ (played by Austin Stowell) iconic head slap? The answer lies in a gesture from his close friend, Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid). Although Gibbs hints at the influence of a mentor on his head-slapping habit in the “NCIS” episode “Hiatus Part 1,” “Hollywood Ending” vividly depicts the exact moment. Franks delivers a head slap to Gibbs in the same manner Gibbs later adopts with his team. This occurs after Franks finds Gibbs, Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino), and Bernard “Randy” Randolph (Caleb Foote) poring over a large world map, discussing potential transfers following the closure of the Camp Pendleton office. Franks aims to refocus their attention on the task at hand, and his method proves temporarily effective.
Gibbs isn’t the only one with wandering thoughts. Shortly after, the head slap resurfaces when Randy inquires about a possible deferment to the NIS branch in Naples, Italy. Franks, irritated by Randy’s forward-thinking, quips, “Don’t make me slap you upside the head like I did to Gibbs. I don’t want that becoming a thing.”
However, avid “NCIS” fans are well aware that it does become a defining trait, with Gibbs eventually using the head slap on everyone from Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) to, occasionally, himself. Yet, there is one team member who often finds himself on the receiving end of Gibbs’ palm more than others.
While nearly every member of Gibbs’ team (portrayed by Mark Harmon in “NCIS”) has been on the receiving end of a head slap, Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) is the most frequent target. Tony’s penchant for witty remarks and pop culture references often lands him in Gibbs’ crosshairs. In fact, in the Season 8 flashback episode “Baltimore,” Gibbs greets Tony with a slap upon their first meeting. This ritual becomes so ingrained that Tony feels something is amiss when Gibbs greets him without the usual tap, making for memorable interactions that resonate with “NCIS” enthusiasts.
Gibbs’ headslap soon becomes a tradition with one special NCIS member
While almost every member of Gibbs’ (played by Mark Harmon on “NCIS”) team has experienced a good hard knock to the noggin from him, there’s one special somebody who tends to draw most of his ire. Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) tends to get slapped by Gibbs the most frequently, usually because he can’t still his tongue and won’t resist making a smart remark or a pop culture reference. As a matter of fact, during a flashback where the characters meet for the first time in Season 8’s “Baltimore,” Gibbs slaps him. It gets to the point where Tony feels incomplete when Gibbs greets him with anything but a rap to the head — leading to several Gibbs and Tony scenes that “NCIS” fans love.
Several of the twosome’s colleagues echo Gibbs’ tendency to slap Tony on the head — including Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), leading to some of her most pause-worthy moments on “NCIS” as Tony winces or grins in response to her blow. Just goes to show why everyone should stay on Gibbs’ good side — it looks like his fondness for slapping is contagious.
