Authorities in Bakersfield, California, have placed several downtown buildings on lockdown following reports of an active bomb threat and hostage situation.
The alarm was raised at the Chase Bank Building, located at the intersection of Chester Avenue and 17th Street, around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
A man, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly entered the bank and is now “barricaded” inside with an unspecified number of individuals, according to Sergeant Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department.
Police officers have successfully ensured the release of two hostages, confirming that the remaining individuals inside are unharmed. Efforts to negotiate with the suspect are still underway.
In a social media update, the Bakersfield Police stated, “We are still at the scene of the Chase Bank building and have successfully negotiated the release of a second hostage.” They added that, as of shortly after 9 p.m. local time, “there are currently no reported injuries.”
According to ABC affiliate KERO, Bakersfield City Hall and Police Headquarters are among the buildings on lockdown as a precaution.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are assisting.
