WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional Democrats are mounting an effort to reverse changes made by the Trump administration to a widely supported student loan forgiveness program. Lawmakers argue that these modifications are politically motivated and may potentially deny some borrowers the relief they were initially promised.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which forgives loans for eligible public service employees after ten years of payments, has traditionally been available to those in government roles, public education, emergency services, public health, and nonprofit sectors. However, last fall, under President Donald Trump, a new rule was introduced that allows Education Secretary Linda McMahon to remove borrowers from the program if their employers are judged to be engaged in activities with a “substantial illegal purpose.”
This rule, slated for implementation in July, is primarily targeted at organizations serving immigrant communities and transgender youth.
On Tuesday, Democrats in both the Senate and House introduced resolutions to overturn the rule, calling it “a clear attempt to intimidate and punish certain organizations.” While the measure may get a vote, it’s unlikely to pass.
