Early Monday morning, chaos unfolded outside a federal building in New York City. The FBI swiftly confirmed the arrest of a suspect believed to have set off an incendiary device at the location.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York. The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far. FBI JTTF is investigating the incident,” FBI Director Kash Patel noted in a post on X.
James Barnacle Jr., Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York field office, provided updates on the situation. He revealed that the explosion resulted in injuries to two people—a federal employee and a bystander. Thankfully, their injuries were classified as “minor,” and they have since been “treated and released,” Barnacle stated, offering some reassurance amidst the turmoil.

Footage from the scene captures the intense response, showing federal agents, including those from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, actively managing the situation, as they work to ensure the safety and security of the area.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. issued a statement about the episode.
“I am grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to stop an attack at 26 Federal Plaza this morning, for successfully apprehending the suspect and for keeping the people of New York City safe. Acts of terror and violence have no place in our City and will never be tolerated. The individual responsible for this must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Jeffries said in the statement.
