A powerful explosion shook an island community in Western Washington this week, igniting a catastrophic scene that left several homes in ruins and injured five individuals, including three firefighters who bravely stepped into harm’s way. Officials have attributed this devastating event to a miscalculated proximity of smoking to stored fireworks.
This terrifying incident unfolded in the Lagoon Point neighborhood on Central Whidbey Island. According to Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue Chief Jerry Helm, the fire was likely sparked by someone unwittingly smoking too close to a cache of fireworks, which resulted in the explosion. In an interview with FOX 13, Helm likened fireworks to “a little ticking time bomb,” highlighting their unpredictable nature.
The sequence of events reaching its peak began on Wednesday afternoon when the Island County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a house fire. Responding swiftly, firefighters arrived on the scene, only to be caught in the explosion themselves. Three of the firefighters sustained injuries in the line of duty as they attempted to contain the situation.
Authorities, reasserting the earlier findings, confirmed that the explosion likely stemmed from smoking near the stored fireworks, underscoring the inherent dangers associated with improper storage and handling of highly volatile materials. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the latent hazards fireworks pose when safety protocols are not meticulously followed.

Two of the firefighters are now recovering at home and the third is expected to leave the hospital soon.
Two civilians took themselves to the hospital before first responders could evaluate them, the release said.
The sheriff’s office said it will determine after the investigation if any criminal charges are warranted.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating.

The first house was destroyed along with a neighboring one that caught fire, and a third home was damaged in the blast.
Tanya Hernandez-Garzon, one of the neighbors who lost her home, told FOX 13 that the fireworks were “exploding and shooting everywhere.”
“It’s sad to see somebody so immature that they don’t think of other people and to see how much damage is done is really heartbreaking,” she said.

Hernandez-Garzon was able to save her five dogs and pet bird.
“Our main concern was to get the dogs out of the house. Everything else is replaceable, but not my animals,” she added.
She said she slept in her truck that night, but isn’t sure where she’s going to go.
