NYPD Boosts Drone Surveillance for Enhanced Security at 2026 US Open in Flushing Meadows

FLUSHING MEADOWS, Queens — As excitement builds for the upcoming U.S. Open, the New York Police Department is unveiling a robust security plan to ensure the safety of participants and attendees. This year, the department has gained new authority to handle unauthorized drone activity, adding an extra layer of protection.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced an extensive deployment of specialized units designed to safeguard the tournament. These units will be strategically placed throughout the event to address any potential security concerns.

“Our dedicated U.S. Open detail will be supported by a myriad of forces,” Tisch stated. “The bomb squad, along with aviation and mounted units, emergency service teams, and intelligence and counterterrorism officers will be on site. This includes explosive detection dogs, heavy weapons teams, and plainclothes personnel, all working together seamlessly,” she explained.

This year’s competition will be groundbreaking for another reason—it marks the first time the NYPD can independently use advanced tools to safeguard against drone intrusions. This capability is thanks to a recent agreement with the Department of Homeland Security, underlining the commitment to maintaining an uninterrupted and safe event.

Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner of the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau emphasized that counter-drone measures are now an integral part of the department’s comprehensive security approach. This initiative underscores the NYPD’s proactive stance in addressing modern security challenges at large-scale events like the U.S. Open.

“Mitigation is one of several tools that we use to protect against unauthorized drones. There will be a federal temporary flight restriction as well over this facility that allows us to take these countermeasures,” Weiner said.

Officials said drones are an increasing concern at major sporting events. Several drones were intercepted during World Cup matches earlier this year.

Tisch said the U.S. Open will be the first major event where the NYPD exercises its new authority.

“This will be the first major event where the NYPD uses this new authority, and it will be the first event in the country where state or local law enforcement conducts in-depth drone mitigation operations,” Tisch said.

The enhanced security measures will be in place throughout the U.S. Open as law enforcement works to protect players, staff and spectators attending the tournament.
