From September 1971 to June 1980, Cleave worked as a research engineer, research phycologist, and graduate research student at Utah State University’s Ecology Center and Utah Water Research Laboratory.

In May 1980, Cleave was chosen to be an astronaut.

Her technical assignments have included crew equipment design, five Space Shuttle flights as CAPCOM, flight software verification in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), and the Malfunctions Procedures Book.

Cleave, a veteran of two space missions, spent a total of 10 days, 22 hours, 02 minutes, and 24 seconds in space.

She also completed 172 orbits of the planet and covered 3.94 million miles. She served on STS-61-B and STS-30 as a mission specialist.

Cleave worked at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. as an Associate Administrator in the Science Mission Directorate.

When she resigned from that role in April 2007, Dr. Alan Stern took over.

As part of a series of postal stamps released in Azerbaijan to mark the 25th anniversary of the first manned moon landing, Cleave was featured in 1995.

As the first-ever speaker for the Heyden Distinguished Lecture Series, Cleave spoke to Georgetown University students and faculty on January 18, 2009.

She discusses her background and professional experiences while showcasing an original video of her 1985 shuttle mission.
