Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey Shatters All Expectations in Reviews

0

Though opinions vary widely, it’s difficult to find anyone who truly thinks Christopher Nolan has created a poor film. Ranking Nolan’s movies typically means debating what’s merely good versus exceptionally great. So, it came as no surprise that Nolan would work his magic again with “The Odyssey.” Early reviews are pouring in, and as highlighted in Looper’s video above, the film is not just meeting but surpassing even lofty expectations.

At the time of writing, “The Odyssey” boasts an impressive 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Looper’s review echoes the prevailing sentiment: “‘The Odyssey’ is a visual extravaganza and a remarkable triumph that firmly establishes Nolan as a cinematic titan, critics be damned.” Adapting Homer’s celebrated epic is an ambitious undertaking, akin to Odysseus challenging the cyclops, yet Nolan’s rendition stands out as an act of cinematic bravado.

Nolan has not only met but exceeded the substantial anticipation. Reviews are showering it with perfect ratings, such as a 5/5 from Robbie Collin at The Telegraph. “Nolan and his team have crafted a filmic dynamo that pushes boundaries, easily making it the standout film of the year,” he noted. Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent was equally astonished: “This epic blockbuster is unprecedented in scale and signifies Nolan’s finest work to date. It should be the landmark that defines his career.” In short, you should make sure to catch “The Odyssey” the moment it hits theaters.

The Odyssey is a true cinematic epic

When classic epic movies are discussed, titles like “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Ben-Hur,” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy often spring to mind. In a film industry increasingly reliant on green screens and hurried visual effects, recapturing a tangible epic feel seems nearly out of reach. Yet, it appears Christopher Nolan has achieved just that with “The Odyssey.”

While there’s no shortage of acclaim for the film’s visuals, many were quick to praise Matt Damon’s work as Odysseus. Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times wrote, “Damon’s performance finds some welcome transcendence at the end,” while Brian Truitt of USA Today suggested that an Academy Award could be in the star’s future: “Just give him the best actor Oscar now, for Zeus’ sake.” Damon didn’t just get ripped for “The Odyssey”; his haunting Odysseus has left an indelible mark on viewers.

One can go through all the reviews so far and find some minor quibbles, and more will surely materialize once the film is out for all to see. But one thing can be taken from this consensus: Nolan has given us all a reason to go to movie theaters again with something that demands to be seen on the big screen. As Danny Leigh of The Financial Times put it, “We live in an age starved of awe. It leaves quite a gap in the market for Christopher Nolan — long held to be the last giant in movies and uniquely able to spark that missing wonder.” Need more reasons to buy a ticket? Looper has assembled even more critics’ reviews in the video above.

Prepare for Heatwave: Rising Temperatures and Humidity with Fewer Storms on the Horizon

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A shift towards a sultry and warm weather pattern is expected to develop, reducing the likelihood of storms from Thursday through the weekend.

While a few scattered showers may drift through the area overnight, Thursday morning promises to be predominantly dry and warm. Early morning temperatures are expected to dip to the lows and mid-70s.

Tuesday’s temperatures are predicted to sharply climb into the mid-90s by the afternoon, with the heat index potentially soaring above 100°F. Prepare for a sizzling afternoon.

Though there is a chance for a few isolated showers or thunderstorms, Thursday will primarily be characterized by dry and hot conditions.

The heat is set to intensify on Friday and Saturday as high pressure moves into the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. This high-pressure system will not only decrease the probability of storms but also drive temperatures into the mid to upper 90s.

Shower and thunderstorm chances are going to increase slightly for Sunday through next Wednesday. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to warm into the mid and upper 90s, even with a few more showers and storms possible each afternoon.

Heat index values over the next several days will be 105°F to 110°F at times. Be sure to stay cool by taking plenty of breaks indoors or in the shade and by staying hydrated.

TRACKING THE TROPICS

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two areas for potential development in the Atlantic basin.

An area of disorganized cloud cover located over the southeastern U.S. is forecast to move southward over the northern Gulf over the next few days. There is a LOW chance for this area of cloudiness to organize into a tropical system over the next five to seven days.

The main thing that this system will do is help to enhance rain and thunderstorm chances over Florida’s Big Bend, Central and Northeast Florida later this week and into the weekend.

A second system that the National Hurricane Center is watching is located just to the west of Africa and south of the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.

This system has some convective development around a broad area of low pressure. The environment is not expected to support significant organization and development of this system.

There is a very low chance (10%) that this system organized into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next five to seven days.

There is no threat to the U.S. or any other land from this system as of Wednesday evening.

Former Blount County Jailers Granted Bond Amidst Shocking Murder Charges

In Blount County, Alabama, two former jail employees now face murder charges with bonds having been placed for their release.

Authorities accuse Joseph Evans and Liletzy Carbajal of neglect and abuse that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Arthur Morse during his detention at the Blount County Jail.

Morse, who was incarcerated for a DUI charge, suffered from diabetes. According to the prosecution, he was denied insulin, falling into a diabetic coma, after which he was reportedly tased multiple times.

Appearing in court, Carbajal and Evans were each assigned a bond amounting to $75,000.

According to court documents, the former jailers are accused of neglecting Morse’s needs during his incarceration. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey highlighted that Morse was without necessary medication for four days while in jail.

“I think you can look at the indictments in the court filings and see that clearly he was having a medical event,” Casey said.

In court, a prosecutor with the Blount County District Attorney’s Office said Evans and Carbajal punished Morse while he was incapacitated due to not receiving insulin.

The prosecutor said Morse was restrained, seen throwing up dark-colored blood and stunned repeatedly.

Morse was transferred to a hospital and died on Feb. 6.

Evans and Carbajal were each granted a $75,000 bond with the conditions that they cannot leave the state of Alabama and cannot have a job where they have authority over other people.

“That was one of the things we wanted to ensure — that they wouldn’t have access potentially to anyone who was in custody, or control, a patient, or medical oversight by either one of them,” Casey said.

Attorneys for Evans and Carbajal did not return requests for comment.

Both are scheduled to appear back in court next month.

Tragic Loss: 16-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot by Friend, Police Report Reveals

Tragedy has struck a Missouri community as a young life was abruptly ended. Authorities report that a teenage girl was fatally shot by one of her own companions, leaving her grieving mother to make the harrowing discovery.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office revealed details surrounding the heartbreak. Gabbriana “Gabby” Boyster, a 16-year-old vibrant soul, was found dead by her mother in her own home on a somber Saturday afternoon, the victim of a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities believe the tragic incident occurred the night before. As the investigation deepens, three teenage boys have been taken into custody, although their identities remain shielded due to their youth. Local news outlet KSDK reported that each of the suspects is male.

In conversations with KSDK, Gabby’s mother, Candy G’Sell, expressed the depth of her anguish. All of the boys involved, she mentioned, were considered friends by her daughter.

G’Sell shared with KSDK that she wasn’t home at the time, as Gabby was spending time with her friends. Her last communication with Gabby occurred on Friday night. Upon returning home the next afternoon, she discovered the tragic scene in Gabby’s bedroom. Her daughter was found sitting up, prompting an immediate call to 911. Sadly, Gabby was pronounced dead at the site.

Police said in a press release that they identified three juvenile suspects who had been with Gabby on the night she died. All three were charged with abandonment of a corpse. One juvenile suspect was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action. That suspect remains in juvenile custody, and the other two were released.

Authorities did not specify who owned the gun that was allegedly used in the fatal shooting.

Local CBS affiliate KMOV reported that Gabby was set to enter her junior year of high school in the upcoming school year. Hillsboro School District Superintendent Dr. Jon Isaacson said in a statement obtained by KMOV, “While words cannot take away the pain of this tragedy, we want our students, staff, and families to know they are not alone. We are committed to providing support and care for everyone who is grieving during this difficult time.”

G’Sell told KSDK, “There’s no relief. My baby is gone. What mother wants to bury their baby?”

Intense Clashes Erupt as Armed Police Arrest Fans Following Three Lions’ Heartbreaking Defeat

0

Tensions erupted on the streets of both Atlanta and Britain shortly after England’s narrow semi-final loss to Argentina on Wednesday night.

In the aftermath outside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, fights ensued following the decisive 2-1 defeat of the Three Lions at the hands of Lionel Messi’s team.

Authorities intervened to restore order, leading to several England supporters being taken into custody by armed officers, as captured in striking photographs.

Meanwhile, chaos spilled into central London where fans swarmed the streets, climbing atop telephone booths and confronting individual Argentina supporters.

Incidents flared up during the match itself after Argentina seized a banner from fans, which controversially claimed the Falkland Islands as Argentine territory.

The Falklands conflict had loomed large in the build-up to the semi-final tie, with rival chants about the war featuring in fan zones around the city.

After the match was over, tens of thousands of fans flooded out of the stadium to the surrounding streets, with some disputes boiling over into violence.

England fans branded the behaviour of Argentina’s supporters ‘absolutely disgusting’ and warned that things will ‘kick off, 100 per cent’.

The Atlanta Police Department deployed extra resources around the city, with officers lining the streets outside bars near the stadium after the crunch clash.

Argentina and England fans outside bars near the stadium exchanged words – much of it Falklands-related.

American police officers with large guns were seen placing both England and Argentina fans in handcuffs.

One England fan told the Daily Mail: ‘Obviously [we] were upset about the game, walking out the stadium, minding our own business.

‘Some guy, Argentina fan, comes up waving his flag, shoves it in our face, winding us up. You know obviously someone’s going to retaliate, right? But luckily we didn’t retaliate but there’s a lot of animosity.

‘When Argentina scored, an Argentinian guy next to me took his shirt off, waving it, slapping it in my face, absolutely disgusting.

‘Disgusting behaviour from the Argentinian fans, absolutely disgusting.

‘Tonight there’s not enough cops to police all of this. I’m telling you right now it’s going to kick off later in bars and stuff for sure, 100 per cent.’

Back in the UK, police forces are also bracing for possible unrest between rival groups of fans.

In London, police were seen attempting to separate rival groups of fans to prevent fights breaking out.

Thousands flocked into the streets of the city centre from nearby pubs and bars, with video footage showing carnage at famous landmarks such as Piccadilly Circus.

Officers had to step in and rescue one Argentina fan from the area after he was mobbed by British supporters.

Some England fans were seen climbing on phone boxes and traffic lights, with officers intervening to separate rival groups.

Earlier, an initially gutsy performance from the Three Lions saw Anthony Gordon put the side one ahead at 55 minutes, but substitutions to send England into a defensive set-up would heartbreakingly backfire.

England were just less than six minutes away from their first World Cup final for 60 years when Enzo Fernandez scored the equaliser that denied them.

This was followed two minutes into injury time by a header from Lautaro Martinez, who secured Argentina’s place in Sunday night’s final against Spain in New York.

It was England’s fourth-ever appearance in the final four of a World Cup, making this the most high-stakes match since 1966.

But in an all too familiar outcome, supporters’ hopes were dashed once again.

US Intensifies Strikes as Trump Declares Imminent Defeat of Iran

0

President Donald Trump declared that Iran’s defeat is imminent following a new series of US-led strikes against Iran. This marks a renewed conflict between the two adversaries.

The United States and Iran have re-engaged in hostilities, targeting various sites across the region. This resurgence in fighting comes less than a month after both nations signed a memorandum of understanding designed to cease the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced their targeting of the US Fifth Fleet stationed in Bahrain, asserting that these actions intercepted attacks on civilian locations.

Jordan, maintaining strong defense ties with the US, reported successfully intercepting and neutralizing three missiles launched by Iran.

In the northern Kurdish region of Iraq, several explosions were reported near the US consulate in Erbil late on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Trump has threatened to widen strikes next week to include power plants and bridges into US targets, unless Iran returns to the negotiating table.

“They will be defeated soon,” Trump said.

He also claimed that Iran wanted to settle with the US, but the US would decide if they would want a settlement.

What’s happening with the Strait of Hormuz now?

Iran blockaded Hormuz after the war erupted with US-Israeli strikes on 28 February, using the waterway for leverage against its foes for months.

The strait was briefly reopened after the US-Iran deal last month, before Tehran vowed last week it would be closed again “until the US ends its aggression”.

Traffic through the waterway remained low, with maritime tracker Kpler reporting only 21 transits on Tuesday.

The US has reimposed its own blockade of Iran’s ports. On Thursday, the US Central Command said its military disabled an unladen oil tanker attempting to sail toward an Iranian port.

“The commercial vessel ignored multiple warnings as it attempted to violate the US blockade. A US aircraft disabled the vessel after firing hellfire missiles into the ship’s smokestack,” it said.

The ship is no longer transiting to Iran.”

Negotiations still continue

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the renewed US blockade “has, in a way, dismantled the Islamabad memorandum”, referring to the interim deal reached last month.

Despite renewed hostilities, mediated talks between the two sides have not formally ended.

But Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state television on Wednesday that “a memorandum of understanding only has meaning when its clauses are valid and being implemented. If Iran is not to derive any benefit from the memorandum of understanding, we have no reason to adhere”.

Since last week, renewed US attacks have killed at least 30 people in Iran, government spokesman Fatemeh Mohajerani said.

Separately, the military announced that seven of its personnel were killed in Wednesday’s strikes on the southeast.

Mother’s Explosive Vaccine Claims Lead to $2M Bond Revocation

Andrea Shaw finds herself confronting another major challenge as she faces murder charges.

During a court appearance on July 14 in Idaho, a judge in Payette County rescinded her $2 million bail, as reported by KTVB. Shaw has yet to enter a plea in response to the charges.

Both Shaw’s defense team and the prosecution presented contrasting narratives regarding the tragic loss of her 18-month-old twins, the outlet noted. Shaw had previously suggested that the fatalities might be linked to vaccinations, and she also proposed that heat inside their home could have been a contributing factor.

Requests for further statements were made to Shaw’s defense attorney, seeking more insight into the case.

The mother is formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder related to the demise of her young children, according to a press release shared by the Payette Police Department.

Prosecutors argued at the July 14 hearing that medical experts determined the twins died of suffocation, saying it was consistent with the coroner’s findings, KTVB reported. They also alleged that heat was ruled out as a contributing factor in their deaths.

Meanwhile, Shaw’s attorney, Joseph Filicetti, told KTVB that he, like Shaw and her husband Nathanial Shaw, believes the children’s deaths were related to vaccines.

“They were looking at it as a vaccine death, and that’s still what I believe it to be,” Filicetti said, before noting, “I’m not a medical expert.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states there is no evidence that vaccines cause autism or are linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The agency also says extensive research has shown that receiving multiple vaccines during the same visit is safe and does not increase the risk of adverse health outcomes.

Uplifting Tribute to Jamey Carney at Ireland Funeral Service

    0

In a touching tribute, Jamey Carney was remembered as a loving mother during her funeral, a ceremony that painted a portrait of her vibrant life before it met a tragic end in Ireland.

Jamey Carney, aged 43, hailed from New York and embarked on a new chapter in Ireland in 2021 with her teenage daughter. Her life came to a brutal halt recently when she was beaten and suffocated in Killarney, County Kerry. Authorities have arrested a Jordanian national, a failed asylum seeker who had a romantic relationship with Carney, in connection with her death. He was apprehended in his home country after fleeing Ireland through Istanbul, as per reports from Irish media.

The community congregated at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney to honor Jamey’s life. The memorial, broadcasted online, allowed friends and relatives worldwide to engage in the shared grief, preceding an intimate family-only cremation.

“We focus today not on the circumstances of Jamey’s passing but on the legacy she leaves behind,” Fr. Kieran O’Brien urged those gathered in remembrance.

During the service, O’Brien reflected on Carney’s life growing up in New York alongside her sister, Devon, before recalling her “big decision” to move to Killarney—a choice he described as “the best decision of her life.”

He said she and her daughter, Michaela, had found a place they proudly called home, with Michaela settling into school and becoming actively involved in Irish sports.

The priest described Carney as a woman whose “joy radiated” from her, saying she had built a close circle of friends after moving to Killarney and found happiness in simple things. He recalled her love of country music, travel, shopping, going to concerts and spending time with friends.

“She was happy in life and she was happy with life because life was good to her,” he said.

“But her real love in life was you, Michaela,” he added, addressing Carney’s daughter.

“We thank God for Jamey’s life, remembering at all times her joy, and the ray of sunshine that she brought to all of your lives,” he added.

Family members carried a series of personal items to the altar celebrating Carney’s life, including photographs of her daughter, Michaela, and her dog, Penny. A cowboy hat symbolizing her love of country music, the passports she and Michaela used to start their new life together in Ireland and an angel statue were also brought forward.

A framed photograph of Carney rested atop her coffin, which was positioned before the altar and draped in a white pall.

As Carney’s coffin departed St. Mary’s Cathedral following the funeral mass, young members of Dr. Crokes GAA Club formed a guard of honor outside the church. Carney’s grieving sister, Devon, wearing a Kerry GAA jersey and clutching a sunflower, was distraught as family members gathered around the hearse.

The service centered on celebrating Carney’s life, her family and the community she built in Ireland rather than the disturbing circumstances surrounding her death and subsequent murder investigation.

Detectives believe Carney was killed around 11 p.m. Monday, roughly 14 hours before her 13-year-old daughter discovered her body at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. By then, the man had traveled roughly 200 miles by bus to Dublin Airport and boarded a flight to Istanbul, according to the Irish Independent.

Irish police have yet to publicly identify the person they want to question in the investigation or release his name, photograph or any physical description.

Irish police confirmed to News Media they were aware “of the arrest of a male in Jordan by the Jordanian authorities,” but did not identify the man or confirm he was the person of interest in the investigation. Police also confirmed they “have not made any request to the Jordanian authorities for the arrest of any person at this time.”

Irish media have widely identified the man as the person of interest in the investigation, though Irish police have not publicly confirmed his identity.

Ireland does not have an extradition treaty with Jordan, where the man is being detained, according to the Irish Independent.

News Media asked Irish police and Ireland’s Department of Justice to confirm reports that the man had previously been refused asylum while appealing that decision. Neither agency confirmed the reports.

The man had been living in state-run accommodation for asylum seekers in Killarney before spending increasing amounts of time at Carney’s home after they became romantically involved, according to the Irish Mirror.

He first arrived in the United Kingdom before traveling through Northern Ireland and eventually settling in County Kerry, according to the Irish Mirror.

His social media accounts contain posts from the United Kingdom and Turkey in recent years.

Meanwhile, the FBI told News Media it stands ready to assist Irish authorities if requested.

“Through our Legal Attaché in London, we have strong, established relationships and stand ready to assist in any way that the Irish government may request,” the FBI said in a statement.

The State Department told News Media it is providing consular assistance to the family.

Military Wellness Boost: Pete Hegseth Introduces Mandatory Testosterone Screenings for Troops Aged 30+

    0

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth unveiled an initiative to conduct annual testosterone screenings for servicemen and provide testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) when necessary.

The Pentagon’s leader clarified that this testing will target servicemen over the age of 30, while those younger will be able to choose to have their testosterone levels checked voluntarily.

“Despite our substantial investment in advanced weapons systems and cutting-edge equipment, our true tactical edge will always lie with the individual warrior,” stated Hegseth. “We hold a solemn obligation to preserve this advantage, necessitating an ongoing pursuit of ways to enhance your performance, resilience, and overall well-being,” he expressed in a video shared on platform X, with a captivating title of “The High-T Department of War.”

Hegseth emphasized that this program aims to ensure servicemen maintain “optimal testosterone levels to perform at their peak, acknowledging the well-documented scientific findings that testosterone levels naturally decline with age.”

For those servicemen with lower levels, the program will provide TRT to support them.

“This initiative, it’s not about artificial enhancement; it’s about restoring and optimizing your natural capabilities, protecting your longevity, ensuring you have the biological foundation required to sustain and fight,” Hegseth said. “We owe our warriors the absolute best medical care in the world. And this program delivers on that obligation.”

According to the Hill, roughly “5.6 percent of men between 30 and 79 have testosterone deficiency, which can cause muscle loss, fatigue, weight gain and sexual dysfunction,” along with other health issues like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and depression.

“By addressing these health markers early, we’re keeping you on the leading edge of lethality and giving you the same level of support that you give this nation the absolute best,” Hegseth said.

According to Northwestern Medicine, testosterone increases with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) as well as resistance training.

“Lifting weights, using resistance bands or doing bodyweight exercises like squats and push-ups puts stress on your muscles, signaling your body to produce more testosterone to aid in muscle growth and repair,” it noted. “Compound exercises, like deadlifts, squats and bench presses, work multiple muscle groups simultaneously and tend to have the most significant effect on testosterone levels.”

“High-intensity interval training (HIIT): Short bursts of intense exercise followed by brief recovery periods can also lead to a testosterone surge. HIIT workouts are time-efficient and can be incorporated into various activities like cycling, rowing, sprinting or bodyweight circuits,” it added.
