North Dakota Families File Lawsuit Against Hospital Over Alleged Baby Mix-Up at Birth

0

In a shocking legal turn of events, two families are taking action against a North Dakota hospital, claiming that their newborn sons were swapped at birth over three decades ago.

On January 26, 1988, Kyle Bylin and Jeremy Morrison entered the world at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota. According to a lawsuit filed by their families and as reported by KVLY, these were the only babies delivered that day at the hospital, which operates under the Christian Unity Hospital Corporation name.

It’s claimed in the lawsuit that the newborns were accidentally swapped by hospital staff, leading each boy to be raised by the other’s biological parents, allegedly unbeknownst to anyone involved.

Shockingly, the mix-up remained undetected for more than 36 years.

Two years ago, Morrison, who now lives in Colorado, took a DNA test and learned the parents who raised him were not his biological parents. Morrison told KKTV that his aunt provided DNA, and Bylin matched as her nephew. Morrison said he does not have any cousins.

Morrison told the outlet that he always felt different from the family he grew up with.

“I didn’t have anyone that looked like me in my family,” Morrison said. “I was that blonde-haired kid that stood out in a family full of brown-haired people.”

“I know I definitely wouldn’t be here in Colorado today if I went home with the right parents,” he said. “I would have been working the farm with my older brother that I never knew I had.”

Both sets of parents have met their biological sons, but the two men have not met each other, according to KKTV.

Unity Medical Center denied the allegations and asked the court to dismiss the case with prejudice.

Attorneys for the hospital argued that its staff “possessed and exercised the appropriate degree of skill and learning” and “at all times used reasonable care, judgment, and diligence,” according to KVLY.

The hospital also claims the lawsuit may be prohibited by the statute of limitations, pointing to “the length of time that has passed between the alleged incident and the service of this lawsuit.”

The plaintiffs are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and have asked for a jury trial.

The hospital also raised comparative fault as a defense, arguing that damages, if any, could be attributable to parties other than the hospital.

The hospital has also demanded a jury trial.

Unity Medical Center said in a statement to KKTV that it is “currently working to better understand a highly unusual situation involving two men who apparently were separated from their biological parents at some point during their lives,” adding: “Both men were born at our hospital on the same day in 1988, and we recognize the profound impact this discovery has had on them and their families.”

“Unfortunately, because of the passage of nearly four decades, the medical and staffing records that might have provided additional clarity no longer exist, and no members of the delivery team from that time are still employed by the hospital,” the statement continued. “While we deeply sympathize with the men and their families, we have found no evidence to support claims that Unity Medical Center or its staff were responsible for what occurred.”

Mediterranean Diet Enhances Senior Mental Health, Study Reveals

0

A nutritious regimen abundant in fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive oil could be the secret to maintaining a sharp mind well into the golden years, as evidenced by recent research findings.

Throughout the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults in England who adhered to the Mediterranean diet—primarily comprising these nutrient-rich foods—reported better psychological well-being compared to those who did not.

The investigative team monitored over 3,000 individuals, aged between 50 and 90, to explore the connection between their dietary habits and perspective on life, according to their press release.

Participants completed comprehensive surveys designed to evaluate positive psychological attributes, such as their sense of autonomy, life satisfaction, purpose, and control over daily activities.

Additionally, each participant was assigned a score reflecting how closely their eating habits aligned with the traditional Mediterranean diet.

Adults who stuck closely to the Mediterranean diet reported a significantly stronger sense of overall well-being.

This finding held even after researchers accounted for factors like income, education, physical activity, smoking habits and general physical health.

The boost in well-being did not appear to be driven by differences in caloric intake, which suggests the specific types of food played an important role.

As the researchers tracked the participants over several years, they were able to measure how their well-being shifted during the early months of the pandemic.

While emotional well-being and happiness dropped across the entire group during the lockdowns, the study – which was published in BMJ Open – showed the decline was less intense for people who stuck to the Mediterranean diet.

Previous research points to a few explanations for this.

“This study shows what we’ve been seeing in other research,” Kim Kulp, registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of the Gut Health Connection in the San Francisco Bay Area, told Fox News Digital.

The Mediterranean diet is naturally rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids from fish and antioxidants called polyphenols found in extra-virgin olive oil.

These nutrients help to lower inflammation in the brain and support a healthy gut microbiome, which is directly linked to the chemical production of mood-regulating hormones, experts say.

“Since the Mediterranean diet is loaded with a variety of plant foods, it provides an increase in nutrients for the body and brain, special compounds that reduce inflammation, and prebiotics to feed the good gut microbes,” said Kulp, who was not involved in the study.

Researchers noted some limitations to the data, including the fact that the study relied on self-reported dietary surveys, which can sometimes be inaccurate.

Additionally, the participants who completed the tracking tended to be healthier and wealthier than the general public, meaning the results might not fully apply to more diverse or vulnerable populations.

“There were only two days of dietary data, and the psychological well-being test was only administered on two occasions, both early on during COVID,” Kulp noted. “Two days of data may not be enough to form conclusions.”

Because the study was observational, it could not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the diet and improved mental health, the researchers acknowledged.

“Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes provides the ultimate combination of nutrients to improve overall health as we age,” said Kulp.

“Together, this diet can help reduce stress and depression and improve a sense of well-being, even during the toughest times.”

Co-Worker’s Chilling Revelation in Nurse’s Disappearance

0

A colleague of a missing emergency room nurse from California recently shed light on the moment concerns were raised, as the intense search for this mother of two advances into a crucial phase.

Angelica Brophy, a 44-year-old ER nurse from Oceanside, was last seen when she dropped off her daughter at a local camp on July 6. Strangely, she did not return later that day as expected.

The mystery surrounding her disappearance sparked a frantic search effort, especially after her car was found parked near Palomar Mountain Skate Park, a place she frequently visited for hiking.

A friend and fellow colleague at Kaiser Hospital in San Marcos noticed something was amiss when Brophy failed to report for her night shift on the day she vanished.

“We’re both nightshift nurses,” she shared with Fox 5. “I arrived for work on Monday night, but she was absent.”

‘I reached out to another one of the girls from our group, and she hadn’t heard from her either. Then I found out that her husband was contacting the hospital to see if she had shown up for work, and that’s kinda when the alarm was sounded,’ she continued.

Brophy was reported missing that same day at around 9.30pm to the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) and the frantic search began.

Just over a week later, search efforts have yet to unearth any signs of Brophy.

OPD Chief of Police Taurino Valdovinos said there is currently no evidence pointing to foul play in Brophy’s disappearance.

But her heartbroken family and friends are left wondering and hoping that Brophy will return to them alive and well.

‘We don’t really know what we’re supposed to do, and no one guides you,’ her co-worker continued.

‘So, at this point, we’re sort of taking a grassroots effort to try and find other areas to search.’

Much of the efforts to find Brophy have been concentrated on Palomar Mountain Skate Park, where her vehicle was found. Her relatives said she regularly hiked with them around the area.

A parking ticket placed her at the skate park around 50 minutes after she was last seen on security footage leaving the Harrah’s Resort Southern California Casino at around 3.30pm on July 6.

After she didn’t return home and failed to collect her daughter from camp, her husband called Brophy’s brother and then the police.

She was last seen wearing black leggings and a gray t-shirt, according to the poster.

‘She loves life and we really just need her back,’ her sister-in-law Lisa Fabregas told NBC San Diego. ‘She is one of the most wonderful, thoughtful women that I know. She’s a very good mom. She will do anything for her children.’

‘She is funny and kooky, and will sing at the top of her lungs and will not have one note in tune, but she does not care,’ she added.

Manny Fabregas, one of Brophy’s five older brothers, said the family is desperately waiting on any information about her whereabouts.

‘We’re all in a state of limbo right now and it’s hard to move on without any leads,’ he told NBC News.

Another brother, Martin Fabregas, said he is trying hard not to let his mind wander into ‘dark places.’

‘It’s a wait-and-see. We’re trying to encourage everybody to stay positive, stay strong,’ he told the outlet.

Ramon Fabregas, another of Brophy’s brothers, told KGTV that many community members have been searching the park as well in hopes of finding her.

Female NYSC Member Speaks Out After PPA Rejection Due to Body Size

A female participant in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has ignited a wave of reactions across social media platforms following her claim of rejection by her assigned Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) due to her body size.

This allegation came to light in a widely circulating video, featuring the corps member adorned in her complete NYSC attire. The video bore the caption: “I’m crying all night long, so why don’t you want this to end?”

Corps member shares alleged experience

She elaborated on the incident through text displayed within the video, offering her perspective on the situation.

“Not going to lie, getting rejected by my PPA because of my body stung. It’s hard facing discrimination in a program meant to unite us. But I’m keeping my head high; my capacity to serve and succeed doesn’t depend on a scale.”

The corps member chose not to reveal the organization’s name involved in the matter or provide additional details about the context of the alleged snub.

Her claim has since generated mixed reactions, with many social media users debating whether the incident amounted to discrimination.

Social media reactions

Reacting to the viral video, D Best wrote:

“They are afraid your weight will destroy their chairs. No vex dear. Tinubu no reach your side? Try reduce small e get why. Thank you.”

Orator commented:

“Pity party doesn’t help anyone. I don’t feel sorry for you cause I don’t know what happened and why you were rejected. You can’t just write things like this online without context. Don’t be a fat fool.”

Rita questioned the claim, writing:

“That’s very bad of that PPA or is there something you’re not telling us.”

Arthur Amadi said:

“This is clearly discriminatory on grounds of physical size or features. No one should have to suffer such deprivation based on bodily features. That violates her constitutional rights.

She should get a lawyer and school that organization. The difficulty here is that the useless scheme called NYSC is the instrument behind this humiliation and purported abuse of young people. It is not supposed to be so.”

TAP also reacted:

“Ok no problem we can’t fight for u. Go home and gym. We don’t have Time for anything connected with emotional we deal with reality.”

The NYSC has not publicly commented on the allegation, and the claim remains unverified at the time of reporting.

Forest pounce for free agent Xaver

Nottingham Forest is poised to welcome Xaver Schlager, an Austria midfielder who is now a free agent.

At 28, Schlager exited RB Leipzig after his contract expired, choosing a two-year stint with Oliver Glasner’s team over other possible offers.

Schlager figured for Austria in their World Cup last-32 defeat by Spain.

Clubs on alert as Camavinga could leave Real

Eduardo Camavinga could be allowed to leave Real Madrid this summer.

The 23-year-old France international is keen to remain at the Bernabeu, but may be made available for transfer to offset spending elsewhere.

Manchester City and Manchester United have both considered Camavinga but cost will obviously be key if the player is put up for transfer.

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has begun pre-season training and is still awaiting one or two more additions while assessing the players at his disposal. Some will be allowed out on loan or sale.

Manzambi set for Villa medical

Swiss international Johan Manzambi is expected to have his medical at Aston Villa tomorrow.

His club Freiburg say Villa have agreed to pay a club-record fee of around £54million plus add-ons. That will exceed the amount Villa paid Everton in 2024 for Amadou Onana, who is now out with ligament damage.

Villa are pursuing other midfield targets after losing Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and two full-backs after allowing Andres Garcia to join Getafe on loan and losing Lucas Digne to Paris Saint-Germain for £8.5m.

They have enquired about Pervis Estupinan at AC Milan and Emerson Royal at Flamengo.

Villa have also sold Lewis Dobbin to Southampton for £9million plus add-ons.

Bournemouth had also been interested in Sassuolo’s Tarik Muharemovic who is joining Leeds United.

Sunderland get their man Meunier

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Belgium full-back Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract.

The 34-year-old was a free agent after leaving Lille and had interest from Valencia and Hull.

‘I am hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland,’ Meunier told the club’s website. ‘I’m very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career.

‘The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it’s a challenge I’ve wanted to experience.

He has agreed a four year contract.

Sheffield United, Wolves and Middlesbrough were also keen on Dobbin.

Wrexham hunt Serie A star

Wrexham are in talks over a £7.2million deal for Fiorentina centre-back Matias Moreno.

The 22-year-old Argentine, who was on loan at Levante last season, is now discussing personal terms with the ambitious Championship club.

Fiorentina want a 50 per cent sell-on clause into the deal also.

Wrexham have also discussed a move for Leicester’s Harry Souttar and are in talks over a £7m deal for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

James Handy’s Alleged Killer Assigned to Treatment Center

In a development from the high-profile case involving Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy, the man accused of his murder, Michael Gledhill, has been directed to a mental health facility. Legal proceedings determined him incapable of standing trial due to mental incompetency.

Court documents reviewed by Us Weekly revealed this decision followed a hearing on July 14. Gledhill was transferred from his initial detention to a psychiatric treatment center. His legal status will be revisited during a progress hearing in Hollywood set for October 14.

The publication Us has contacted Gledhill’s legal representation for further information or comments.

Details emerged on June 23 from Us that after undergoing psychological assessments, Gledhill, aged 44, was found unfit to face murder charges. Presiding Judge Maria Cavalluzzi noted Gledhill’s lack of comprehension concerning the charges and his inability to assist in his own defense, in addition to being unable to make coherent healthcare decisions.

James-Handy-TSDBEHI_AZ011

James Handy, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, tragically lost his life on June 3 at 81. California law enforcement implicated Michael Gledhill, identifying him from security camera footage, reportedly observed outside Handy’s residence shortly after the incident, according to materials gathered from Ring surveillance.

The judge’s June ruling stipulated that Gledhill would be involuntarily medicated for a period of one year to determine whether his condition can be improved through treatment. (Michael’s mother and Handy’s girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, previously told TMZ that her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia but had stopped taking his medication.)

Michael was initially arrested and booked on one count of murder in June. He has not entered a plea.

Following Judge Cavalluzzi’s ruling, Michael’s defense attorneys, LA County Deputy Public Defenders Donna Tryfman and Robert Krauss, told Us on June 23, “The constitutional guarantee of due process demands that criminal cases proceed only when a defendant is competent to participate. The court’s finding that Michael Gledhill is presently incompetent to assist counsel in his criminal proceedings is not a determination of guilt or innocence. The court’s ruling means that treatment and restoration efforts will now take priority before the criminal case can move forward.”

“While the allegations in this matter remain extremely serious, the legal process must continue in a manner that is both just and consistent with constitutional protections,” the attorneys went on. “Nothing about the court’s finding regarding competency diminishes the seriousness of the loss or the pain experienced by those who knew and loved Mr. Handy.”

Police confirmed on June 3 that the Alias and Profiler star was found dead at age 81 at his Los Angeles home after allegedly being fatally stabbed by his girlfriend’s son, Michael.

“On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, around 9:30 a.m., West Valley area patrol officers responded to a radio call of unknown trouble in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. The 911 caller stated, ‘I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.’ Upon their arrival, officers discovered 81-year-old James Handy in the front yard of the residence, unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest,” an LAPD statement read. “The victim was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced deceased.”

Handy was publicly confirmed as the victim by his longtime representative.

“With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” his spokesperson told Us at the time.

An autopsy from the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner, which was obtained by Us on July 14, clarified that Handy had been involved in a “verbal altercation” with Michael that turned physical.

“The subject dragged him to the side of the house,” the report read. “9-1-1 was called and paramedics responded to the scene, initiated life-saving efforts, and transported him to the hospital, where, despite these efforts, death was pronounced on the same date.”

Who Was James Handy? What to Know About ‘Top Gun’ Actor Who Was Fatally Stabbed

Actor James Handy died at age 81 after being stabbed by his girlfriend’s son. “On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, around 9:30 a.m., West Valley area patrol officers responded to a radio call of unknown trouble in the 19200 block of Erwin Street,” Los Angeles police confirmed in a June 2026 statement. “The 911 caller stated, […]

The L.A. Medical Examiner touched on the fatal injuries that Handy sustained, noting that “it is possible [a] neck compression occurred prior to the infliction of the stab wound and may have incapacitated the decedent prior to the stabbing.” (His official cause of death was determined to be multiple traumatic injuries, including a stab wound to the torso and neck compression inflicted by another.)

Handy had a near 50-year career as a character actor in Hollywood, with memorable roles in the hit films Jumanji, Unbreakable and K-9. His notable TV credits included appearances on Matlock, Melrose Place, NCIS: Los Angeles and Criminal Minds.

Record-Breaking ICE Operation Arrests 238 Illegal Immigrants in South Texas Sweep

0

In a landmark single-day operation, ICE’s Harlingen, Texas field office, alongside various law enforcement collaborators, announced the apprehension of 238 undocumented immigrants on Tuesday. This operation set a new record for targeted arrests within the Rio Grande Valley, according to agency sources.

The agency emphasized that this achievement represents the highest number of targeted arrests in a one-day effort for the Enforcement and Removal Operations in Harlingen.

On June 18, these arrests captured undocumented individuals with a range of serious convictions, including attempted kidnapping, sexual battery, and drug possession, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing illegal activities along the border.

The June 18 operation resulted in the arrests of illegal immigrants with convictions including attempted kidnapping, sexual battery and drug possession, according to the agency.

“The ICE mission continues to focus on enhancing public safety and restoring integrity to our nation’s immigration system,” ICE Harlingen Field Office Director Juan Agudelo said in a statement.

“We will stop at nothing to keep our American communities safe by removing one criminal illegal alien at a time,” he added.

The arrests come as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on illegal immigration and seeks to remove criminal illegal immigrants from communities across the country.

Among those arrested was Manuel Morales-Geronimo, a Mexican national whom authorities identified as a Paisas gang member.

Morales-Geronimo was previously convicted of assault causing bodily injury, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, illegal entry into the United States and three counts of illegal reentry, according to ICE.

Jose Alfredo Castillo-Mendoza, also a Mexican national, was arrested during the operation. According to ICE, he was previously convicted of attempted kidnapping, sexual battery and illegal reentry.

The announcement came the same day President Donald Trump pushed back on a reported DHS move to pause most ICE traffic stops, calling them “one of ICE’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools.”

The reported pause followed scrutiny over recent fatal encounters involving immigration enforcement traffic stops.

In a social media post, Trump wrote, “We CANNOT give up one of ICE’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!”

The president added that the DHS policy shift would be “playing right into the criminal’s [sic] hands.”

House Democrats Deepen Divide: Over 50% Vote to Slash Israel Aid

0

In a historic move on Wednesday, over half of House Democrats cast their votes in favor of withdrawing $3.3 billion in U.S. aid to Israel. This decision stands as the clearest indication yet that the once unwavering bipartisan support for Israel is crumbling, particularly in light of the recent conflict in Gaza that has resulted in the loss of thousands of Palestinian lives.

Although the final vote count of 104-314 was insufficient to incorporate the amendment into a larger national security spending package, it underscores significant shifts in perspective. These changing attitudes are creating rifts not only within the Democratic Party but also nationwide regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing war strategies, which are now in their third year.

The divide within the Democratic leadership on this critical issue was highlighted in what many considered a preliminary vote ahead of the impending U.S. midterm elections, which are set to determine the balance of power in Congress.

The partisan split was evident as more than 100 Democrats supported the amendment to withdraw the military aid, while nearly an equal number opposed it. In contrast, almost all Republicans voted to maintain the funding support to Israel.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who publicly opposed the proposal to eliminate the aid, nevertheless emphasized a vital point: “For the betterment of both Israel and the Palestinian people, it’s imperative that American policy in the Middle East undergoes a transformation.”

Jeffries said in a letter to colleagues, ahead of a private caucus meeting this week where he spoke on the issue, that he believes “there are more decisive ways to achieve the urgent change necessary when it comes to the far-right Netanyahu government.”

Democrats divided over US support for Israel

The deepening divide over Israel threatens to upend the Democratic Party as it faces an energized left flank that is promoting self-proclaimed democratic socialists in a handful of marquee House races, particularly last month in New York.

While more traditional Democrats have stood with US support for Israel, a growing number have distanced themselves from Netanyahu’s strategy as the war has dragged on in a prolonged response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.

The Democratic Whip, Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, announced she would support the measure to withhold the funds.

Republicans have seized on the divide to portray Democrats as being overtaken by their more radical far-left elements, even as House Speaker Mike Johnson faces divisions within his own ranks as President Donald Trump’s most ardent America First Republicans lean toward less foreign military spending.

According to an AP-NORC poll this month, about one-third of US adults — including roughly half of Democrats — believe Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians during the war in Gaza, an accusation that’s been leveled by some human rights organizations and vehemently denied by Israel and the US government.

Amendment pushed forward from Rep. Thomas Massie

The amendment to strip Israel’s foreign aid was offered by Rep. Thomas Massie, the libertarian-leaning Kentucky Republican who lost his own bid for reelection after Trump backed his challenger.

During the floor debate, Massie said the $3.3 billion could be better spent at home on US roads, bridges and veterans’ needs, especially as national deficits are on the rise. He said the American weapons were used on “oftentimes innocent civilians.”

“I think we should stop it — we should put them on a diet,” Massie said.

But Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, himself a former party leader, championed longtime support of Israel and warned against withdrawing US aid.

“I rise in strong opposition to this amendment, which would dangerously undermine American national security,” Hoyer said. He said it would limit the United States’ ability to confront terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, which he said “expressly target American citizens and military personnel.”

Lawmakers under pressure as midterms near

The lawmakers were feeling pressure from all sides as they prepare for midterm elections this fall.

The powerful American-Israel group AIPAC encouraged its supporters to contact members of Congress to register their opposition.

“We must ensure his dangerous amendment is defeated,” AIPAC said in a statement ahead of the vote.

At the same time, the progressive advocacy organization J Street gave lawmakers more leeway to express their views, as Jeffries did, even as the group opposed the amendment as poorly drafted and overly broad.

President Jeremy Ben-Ami said in a statement that J Street recognizes “that, for many Democrats, this is one of the few opportunities to cast a recorded vote expressing opposition to the way American military assistance and American-supplied weapons have been used by the Israeli government in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and elsewhere.”

He said that what unites the majority of Democrats “is far more significant” than this vote as they work to support “the security and rights of both Israelis and Palestinians.”

Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey Shatters All Expectations in Reviews

Though opinions vary widely, it’s difficult to find anyone who truly thinks Christopher Nolan has created a poor film. Ranking Nolan’s movies typically means debating what’s merely good versus exceptionally great. So, it came as no surprise that Nolan would work his magic again with “The Odyssey.” Early reviews are pouring in, and as highlighted in Looper’s video above, the film is not just meeting but surpassing even lofty expectations.

At the time of writing, “The Odyssey” boasts an impressive 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Looper’s review echoes the prevailing sentiment: “‘The Odyssey’ is a visual extravaganza and a remarkable triumph that firmly establishes Nolan as a cinematic titan, critics be damned.” Adapting Homer’s celebrated epic is an ambitious undertaking, akin to Odysseus challenging the cyclops, yet Nolan’s rendition stands out as an act of cinematic bravado.

Nolan has not only met but exceeded the substantial anticipation. Reviews are showering it with perfect ratings, such as a 5/5 from Robbie Collin at The Telegraph. “Nolan and his team have crafted a filmic dynamo that pushes boundaries, easily making it the standout film of the year,” he noted. Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent was equally astonished: “This epic blockbuster is unprecedented in scale and signifies Nolan’s finest work to date. It should be the landmark that defines his career.” In short, you should make sure to catch “The Odyssey” the moment it hits theaters.

The Odyssey is a true cinematic epic

When classic epic movies are discussed, titles like “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Ben-Hur,” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy often spring to mind. In a film industry increasingly reliant on green screens and hurried visual effects, recapturing a tangible epic feel seems nearly out of reach. Yet, it appears Christopher Nolan has achieved just that with “The Odyssey.”

While there’s no shortage of acclaim for the film’s visuals, many were quick to praise Matt Damon’s work as Odysseus. Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times wrote, “Damon’s performance finds some welcome transcendence at the end,” while Brian Truitt of USA Today suggested that an Academy Award could be in the star’s future: “Just give him the best actor Oscar now, for Zeus’ sake.” Damon didn’t just get ripped for “The Odyssey”; his haunting Odysseus has left an indelible mark on viewers.

One can go through all the reviews so far and find some minor quibbles, and more will surely materialize once the film is out for all to see. But one thing can be taken from this consensus: Nolan has given us all a reason to go to movie theaters again with something that demands to be seen on the big screen. As Danny Leigh of The Financial Times put it, “We live in an age starved of awe. It leaves quite a gap in the market for Christopher Nolan — long held to be the last giant in movies and uniquely able to spark that missing wonder.” Need more reasons to buy a ticket? Looper has assembled even more critics’ reviews in the video above.

Prepare for Heatwave: Rising Temperatures and Humidity with Fewer Storms on the Horizon

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A shift towards a sultry and warm weather pattern is expected to develop, reducing the likelihood of storms from Thursday through the weekend.

While a few scattered showers may drift through the area overnight, Thursday morning promises to be predominantly dry and warm. Early morning temperatures are expected to dip to the lows and mid-70s.

Tuesday’s temperatures are predicted to sharply climb into the mid-90s by the afternoon, with the heat index potentially soaring above 100°F. Prepare for a sizzling afternoon.

Though there is a chance for a few isolated showers or thunderstorms, Thursday will primarily be characterized by dry and hot conditions.

The heat is set to intensify on Friday and Saturday as high pressure moves into the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. This high-pressure system will not only decrease the probability of storms but also drive temperatures into the mid to upper 90s.

Shower and thunderstorm chances are going to increase slightly for Sunday through next Wednesday. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to warm into the mid and upper 90s, even with a few more showers and storms possible each afternoon.

Heat index values over the next several days will be 105°F to 110°F at times. Be sure to stay cool by taking plenty of breaks indoors or in the shade and by staying hydrated.

TRACKING THE TROPICS

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two areas for potential development in the Atlantic basin.

An area of disorganized cloud cover located over the southeastern U.S. is forecast to move southward over the northern Gulf over the next few days. There is a LOW chance for this area of cloudiness to organize into a tropical system over the next five to seven days.

The main thing that this system will do is help to enhance rain and thunderstorm chances over Florida’s Big Bend, Central and Northeast Florida later this week and into the weekend.

A second system that the National Hurricane Center is watching is located just to the west of Africa and south of the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.

This system has some convective development around a broad area of low pressure. The environment is not expected to support significant organization and development of this system.

There is a very low chance (10%) that this system organized into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next five to seven days.

There is no threat to the U.S. or any other land from this system as of Wednesday evening.
