Election Security Alert: Federal Warning on Russian Hacking Campaign as Gov. Pritzker’s Team Addresses Threats

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — As election season looms, federal cybersecurity experts have raised the alarm over a potentially far-reaching hacking campaign believed to be linked to Russia. This revelation has cast new doubts over the security of upcoming elections.

New intelligence suggests that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and his counterparts are proactively strategizing to shield elections from various threats. The focus has been on countering foreign interference and battling disinformation, which could undermine democratic processes.

This strategic meeting occurred just before a critical alert was released by federal cybersecurity officials. The alert addresses a new threat from FSB-16, an arm of Russia’s Federal Security Service, targeting vital infrastructure nationwide, from telecommunications to utilities and government systems.

“Desperate entities will take desperate measures,” noted Jake Braun, who leads the Cyber Policy Initiative at the University of Chicago. His statement captures the high stakes as international tensions escalate through cyberspace.

Braun also highlighted that recent advancements in artificial intelligence have exponentially enhanced the scope and sophistication of these cyberattacks, underscoring the urgent need for heightened vigilance and innovation in cybersecurity strategies.

“AI really puts that on overdrive … to send out hundreds of 1000s, millions, and millions of attacks all at once to millions of potential victims, whether they be small businesses, local governments, whatever,” Braun said. “And so that was possible before, but not with the level of sophistication and the level of reach that it is now.”

Braun, a former senior counselor to the secretary of Homeland Security, said the warning carries added significance because of Russia’s infiltration of the Illinois State Board of Elections in July 2016.

“So yes, absolutely, Russia is desperate right now. Ukraine has them on the ropes, and there’s no telling what they’re going to do in the midterms or any other time,” Braun said.

According to federal indictments against a dozen Russian operatives, cyber spies stole the names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers of about half a million Illinois voters in the 2016 breach.

Illinois election officials have maintained that no votes were changed.

Election security efforts in Illinois are monitored through the Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center, or STIC, headquartered in Springfield. Among its responsibilities, the center monitors intelligence streams for evidence of foreign probes, tampering or cyberattacks targeting election systems.

Security experts said the campaign to dampen American confidence is unrelenting.

“They don’t care about our personal politics or anything,” Braun said. “They want to undermine American faith in our institutions and in our country, and the way they will go about doing that is undermining the infrastructure that underpins those institutions.”

Federal officials and cybersecurity experts continue to urge businesses, government agencies and other institutions to take steps to mitigate cyber threats as concerns over foreign interference and critical infrastructure security persist.

New York Times Fights Back: Moves to Block Subpoenas Targeting Journalists Over Air Force One Reports

WASHINGTON – In a bold move, The New York Times has initiated a legal effort to counter subpoenas issued by the Justice Department to its journalists. These journalists had reported on security issues concerning the recently received Air Force One, a gift from Qatar. This sets the stage for a pivotal courtroom battle over press freedom and the extent to which the government can compel journalists to disclose their sources.

“Our motion clearly states that these subpoenas are an act of bad faith intended to penalize The Times for its reporting. They infringe upon the constitutional rights of our journalists,” stated David McCraw, senior vice president and deputy general counsel of the newspaper, emphasizing the importance of journalistic independence. “We are challenging this in court to protect our journalists’ right to freely report on governmental affairs and deliver important stories to the public.”

The sealed filing took place in the Southern District of New York, as journalists faced subpoenas issued last Friday, compelling their testimony before a federal grand jury.

This situation marks a significant intensification of the Trump administration’s measures against media leaks, particularly highlighted through these subpoenas, some of which reached journalists in their homes. This aggressive stance, reminiscent of an earlier FBI search of a Washington Post reporter’s residence that resulted in the confiscation of her electronic gadgets, drew quick criticism from press freedom advocates who see it as an intimidation tactic against media entities.

A Florida woman faces a lengthy prison sentence after shooting the father of her children during a daycare pickup.

Mindy Osteen, aged 35, has been sentenced to a century behind bars following her guilty plea to second-degree murder and additional charges stemming from the tragic incident in July 2025. According to law enforcement, she fired multiple shots at Christopher Jones with a 9 mm pistol, declaring, “You got to die,” at a Starke daycare center, roughly 45 miles southwest of Jacksonville.

Osteen reportedly uttered, “Please, let the monster die,” while repeatedly shooting Jones at Auntie Lili’s Daycare, as detailed in her arrest report.

The shocking act unfolded with at least six other children and two staff members present inside the facility during the evening hours.

“Chris, you can’t kill [redacted],” Osteen said after firing, according to the arrest report. It is not clear who Osteen was apparently referring to. The children’s individual names were redacted from the report.

“I’m not killing nobody,” Jones replied.

Witnesses told cops that Jones was trying to load the kids into his vehicle when Osteen set upon him with an Arex Delta 9 mm pistol that she had hidden in a backpack. Security footage allegedly showed Osteen lurking close by before she started firing at Jones, according to the arrest report.

“[Jones] puts in the car seats in the back seat of his vehicle as Mindy follows and watches,” the report said. “Christopher is sitting in the driver’s seat with the driver door opened. Mindy walks directly up to Christopher and fires three shots as she backs up slightly. She then walks back up to Christopher and fires two more shots. Christopher can be heard screaming.”

Bradford County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and Jones told them Osteen was responsible for the shooting.

“I’m right here y’all,” Osteen told the deputies. “I done it in self-defense.”

Jones was rushed to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Osteen was booked on charges of first-degree murder, cruelty toward a child, weapon possession, and larceny. Court records show that she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, discharge of a weapon or firearm during school activity or within 1,000 feet of a school, shooting or throwing deadly missiles into dwellings, buildings or vessels, and grand theft of a firearm.

Heroic Bloodhound K-9 Unit Captures Fugitive in Georgia Manhunt for Shooting Suspect

0

A tense 10-hour search concluded in Georgia on Tuesday with a bloodhound’s impressive skills leading deputies to capture a “dangerous” individual. This man was accused of shooting his child’s mother and then fleeing the scene by foot.

The Butts County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 46-year-old Darian Berry Sr., a felon with a previous criminal record.

This domestic confrontation erupted on Tuesday morning in Flovilla, a small city situated about 50 miles south of Atlanta, according to authorities.

“Though he chose to flee, his efforts were futile against the relentless pursuit of law enforcement and the exceptional tracking capabilities of the bloodhounds, which ultimately facilitated his capture,” stated the sheriff’s office.

Deputies first responded to the scene following reports of a domestic incident involving Berry.

According to his charges, Berry allegedly attempted to confine or restrict his victim. He was also accused of arson and stalking.

As deputies arrived, Berry allegedly fled the scene on foot and was believed to be armed with a handgun, prompting a major search effort.

The Georgia community was further placed on a “Be On The Lookout” alert as authorities worked to locate the suspect.

Officials said the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit bloodhound played a key role in helping authorities locate Berry, who was taken into custody by Tuesday evening.

Berry now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, stalking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, obstruction, two counts of arson, battery, family violence, and false imprisonment.

Eminem’s Ex-Wife Kim Scott Tasered After Desperate Suicide Attempt Escalates: Report

0

Eminem’s former spouse, Kim Scott, encountered legal troubles after reportedly being tased and detained by authorities following what is described as a suicide attempt.

According to police documents accessed by TMZ, Scott found herself in a highly agitated and confrontational state. Clad only in underwear and a bra, the incident unfolded at her residence in Michigan this past Saturday. When officers moved to restrain her with handcuffs, she allegedly resisted and bit an officer on the forearm.

In the heat of the moment, Scott is reported to have shouted at the officers, demanding they “get the f–k” out of her home.

After police deployed a taser, Scott retaliated by kicking an officer in the left shin. She subsequently faced arrest under charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

The situation escalated to this point after a concerned family member dialed 911, prompting officers to respond to Scott’s residence.

“Caller says aunt cut her wrist and she’s bleeding,” a dispatcher told emergency responders, per audio obtained by the outlet.

“She’s currently sitting on the couch listening to music. The knife is in her hand, and she will not give it to the caller. Kim Mathers,” the person added. “She’s unconscious now. The caller was able to remove it.”

Scott — formerly Kim Mathers — was rushed to McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens, Michigan, after the incident. Her current condition is still unknown.

The mother of three has attempted suicide twice before. In October 2015, she was involved in a single-vehicle accident in Macomb Township, Michigan. She later admitted that the incident was an intentional suicide attempt.

In July 2021, she was hospitalized after police received a phone call reporting a suicidal person at her home in Michigan. When officers arrived, she was allegedly so combative that she had to be restrained.

Scott, 51, has had recent run-ins with the law.

Page Six exclusively reported in June that a warrant was issued for Scott after she failed to appear in court for her DUI hearing.

A month prior, she was arrested and booked on a suspected DUI charge at Macomb County Jail in Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Scott is known for her tumultuous relationship with Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers. They first the knot in June 1999 and divorced in 2001.

But they reconciled and remarried in January 2006. However, just three months later, the “Lose Yourself” rapper filed for divorce. Their second divorce was finalized in December 2006.

The exes share their daughter, Hailie Jade, 30. They also adopted daughter Alaina, 33 — whose biological mother is Scott’s later twin sister Dawn, who died in 2016 of a suspected heroin overdose — and Stevie, 24, Kim’s child with her former partner Eric Hartter.

Reclaim Your Mobility: Top 5 Home Exercises for Rapid Lower Back Strength After 60

0

Experiencing a weaker lower back after age 60? Discover five effective exercises you can do right at home, recommended by a seasoned trainer.

>

Back discomfort can often be a silent precursor to more noticeable pain in later years. As we age, specifically after 60, the muscles supporting our spine can lose strength if not regularly engaged. This can make routine activities like bending, lifting, standing, or even walking increasingly challenging. Although many assume that rebuilding strength requires fancy gym equipment, some of the most beneficial exercises use only body weight, needing just a bit of space at home.

A common misconception is to target solely the lower back muscles. However, spine health involves more than just one muscle group. The glutes, abdominal muscles, hips, and upper back collectively stabilize the spine during movements. Weakness in any of these areas can cause the lower back to overcompensate, often leading to strain. Thus, my goal as a trainer is to guide clients towards strengthening the entire support system, rather than focusing narrowly on back-specific exercises.

Through years of experience aiding adults over 60, I’ve observed substantial improvement in movement confidence through simple, functional exercises. These routines enhance the muscles safeguarding your spine while boosting posture, balance, and overall mobility. By practicing them consistently several times a week, you can cultivate a robust back strength that simplifies daily tasks instead of complicating them.

Breaking Records: Highlights from the 2026 FIFA World Cup

0

Breaking records seems to be the theme of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the excitement of dramatic penalty shootouts, thrilling victories, and tense matches is making history in real-time. As each game unfolds, new names are etched into the annals of the sport, while others further cement their legendary status.

The tournament is far from over, yet it has already rewritten the history books.

With a historic expansion to 48 teams, this World Cup has already become the most extensive in its 96-year legacy. These additional matches have been a fertile ground for record-breaking feats.

Thus far, the tournament has seen an astonishing 294 goals across 101 matches, averaging nearly three goals per game—this dramatically surpasses the record set in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where 172 goals were recorded in 64 matches.

Add to this, the co-hosts—Mexico, the USA, and Canada—are celebrating another milestone with a record-breaking attendance of 6.5 million fans as of 15 July. This astounding figure shatters the previous high of 3.6 million that the US set back in 1994.

The expanded game has also meant that smaller countries could join the tournament. With a population of just over 150,000, Curaçao became the smallest nation to ever compete in a FIFA World Cup, and the smallest country to ever score a goal at a World Cup.

Finalists Spain also broke a record early in the tournament, becoming the first team to play six World Cup games without conceding a goal.

Lionel Messi breaking record after record

Playing in his sixth World Cup — which already nets him a record, alongside Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo — Lionel Messi has played in more World Cup matches than any other in history (32).

With 21 goals to his name over those six tournaments, the veteran Argentine star has also smashed the record set by Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 for Germany in 24 World Cup appearances between 2002 and 2014.

Messi can also lay claim to being the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick, at 38 years and 357 days old.

Ronaldo held that record before him, netting a hat-trick at the age of 33 years and 130 days in 2018 in Russia.

Messi has also scored in more consecutive matches than any other player in the tournament’s history. He’s scored in nine consecutive games across the two latest World Cups.

With a semi-final game against England on Thursday standing between him and the final, Messi has plenty of opportunities to add to these stats.

Erling Haaland’s incredible debut

Erling Haaland, the charismatic 25-year-old Norwegian striker, has become one of the most prolific debutantes in the tournament’s history.

Despite exiting the competition in the quarter-finals, he leaves as Norway’s highest World Cup goal scorer, with seven to his name across just four matches.

The tally also makes him one of the top 10 goalscorers in a debut World Cup, tied with Grzegorz Lato, who scored seven goals for Poland during his debut in 1974.

They rank behind France’s Just Fontaine (13 goals), Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis (11 goals), West Germany’s Gerd Müller (10 goals), Brazil’s Ademir and Portugal’s Eusébio (nine goals each) and Argentina’s Guillermo Stábile (eight goals).

Players breaking records for their teams

Two-time grand-finalists France may be out of contention for the top gong in 2026, but 27-year-old forward Kylian Mbappé has solidified his position as one of the world’s best players.

He finished the tournament tied with Messi for goals scored. He has eight to his name.

The Les Bleus captain will finish the 2026 World Cup as the French player with the most appearances (21), breaking Hugo Lloris’ previous record of 20.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored three goals in this year’s tournament, taking his total to 11 and making him Portugal’s all-time top World Cup scorer.

This year’s tournament has also seen England captain Harry Kane reach 14 career World Cup goals, the most of any England player, overtaking Gary Lineker’s 10.

Like Messi, he has at least one match to go before his tournament ends, so Kane might be able to beat his own record before the competition’s end.

Prince William Urges England to Stand Proud After Heart-Wrenching World Cup Loss

0

Prince William extended heartfelt encouragement to England’s national team after their narrow World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, urging them to “hold their heads high.”

In a gesture of solidarity, the heir to the throne commended Thomas Tuchel’s squad for their extraordinary “fight and belief,” which he said “inspired us all,” despite the 2-1 defeat at the hands of a formidable team led by Lionel Messi.

Taking to Instagram to share his sentiments, the Prince of Wales expressed his disappointment but also immense pride: “Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you.”

He went on to thank every player and team member, both “on and off the pitch,” for their role in delivering “an incredible tournament,” acknowledging their remarkable effort and inspiring spirit.

“The most complete England team in a tournament,” he declared, encouraging them to stand tall despite the setback.

An initially gutsy performance from the Three Lions saw Anthony Gordon put the side one ahead at 55 minutes, but substitutions to send England into a defensive set-up would heartbreakingly backfire.

England were just less than six minutes away from their first World Cup final for 60 years when Enzo Fernandez scored the equaliser that denied them.

This was followed two minutes into injury time by a header from Lautaro Martinez, who secured Argentina’s place in Sunday night’s final against Spain in New York.

It was England’s fourth-ever appearance in the final four of a World Cup, making this the most high-stakes match since 1966.

But in a story familiar to long-suffering fans, they just couldn’t keep ahead at the final whistle.

The royals were among those quick to congratulate the team for their impressive run to the semis, with King Charles III taking to social media and writing: ‘Commiserations to Harry and the team.

‘While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again.’

And outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to England’s ‘passion’ and ‘energy’.

Writing on X, he said: ‘Gutted. Tonight wasn’t the result we all hoped for, but this England team has given it their all.

‘The passion and energy they’ve shown representing the badge has made us all proud.’

CEO of the FA, Mark Bullingham, said: ‘It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament.

‘I would like to thank them all – and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further.’

But fans and pundits lambasted manager Tuchel for turning to a back five with 35 minutes to go against Messi’s legendary striker boots. Messi was granted assists for both goals against the Three Lions.

Although it served them well against Mexico, Ezri Konsa coming on for the goal scorer in the 72nd minute to join Reece James, John Stones, Marc Guehi and Djed Spence left England with virtually no opportunities on the front foot.

They found themselves on the defensive, and Dan Burn was later introduced too when Reece James left the field injured.

England were then heavily under the cosh, and Enzo Fernandez and then Lautaro Martinez scored to break English hearts once again.

Although Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney were brought on in the final minutes, it was just too little, too late, and Tuchel’s side’s increasingly desperate clearances towards the penalty box were delivered with no results.

England’s players were left devastated as their final hope was dashed, with a stony-faced Harry Kane embracing his compatriots.

Gainesville Man Arrested for Tumultuous McDonald’s Encounter

0

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A dramatic scene unfolded in Midtown at the McDonald’s last night, leading to the arrest of 32-year-old Lorenze Ford III. Ford allegedly leaped across the counter, threatening violence against an employee.

The Gainesville Police Department received a distress call around 9:37 p.m. on July 14. An employee at the McDonald’s located at 1206 W. University Avenue had reported Ford’s disruptive behavior and aggressive shouting inside the establishment.

Despite repeated requests to leave, Ford reportedly refused. Instead, he escalated the situation by jumping over the counter and issued threats to the employee. The employee managed to escort Ford back into the public area, but Ford showed no intention of departing. Notably, this was not his first disruptive episode at the store, prompting the employee to request an official trespass notice against him.

When officers located Ford across the street, he insisted he had been pushed multiple times. Although he declined to discuss the altercation, within earshot of the officers, he declared his intention to return to the restaurant to confront the employee physically.

Ford has been charged with burglary of an occupied structure and simple assault. He has two misdemeanor convictions (non-violent). He was most recently arrested in December 2025 at GRACE Marketplace for trespassing, resisting arrest without violence, and two counts of battery on law enforcement officers, and he served three months in the Alachua County Jail after the battery charges were dropped. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $70,000 on the new charges and ordered a mental health evaluation.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Laura Ingraham Criticizes Ranking of GOP-Run States Among America’s Worst to Live

0

Veteran Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham has joined the chorus of critics slamming a recent CNBC ranking that labeled several states as the “10 worst places to live,” predominantly targeting those led by Republicans.

The 63-year-old media personality made her views known on Tuesday regarding the contested ‘Quality of Life’ ranking.

Earlier in the week, a wave of disapproval came from politicians and pundits alike after the analysis drew controversy by considering criteria such as the ‘inclusivity’ of state laws and the ‘reproductive rights’ available to residents.

In a segment on her show, The Ingraham Angle, Laura Ingraham didn’t hesitate to highlight how each state on the controversial list favored Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential Election.

The states singled out by CNBC, listed in order from the tenth-worst to the worst, include Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Missouri, Utah, Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana, Texas, and Tennessee.

The list itself was a subset of the network’s usual ‘America’s Top States for Business’ analysis.

An incredulous Ingraham highlighted how the new ‘Quality of Life’ list had included four of the top 10 states from that ranking.

‘How does that make any sense?’ she asked.

‘They have kind of a weird calculus there, but this is obviously a blatant effort to denigrate more conservative states,’ she said. ‘But it’s really nothing new.’

A clip of Hillary Clinton bragging about winning ‘optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving-forward’ states in 2016 – despite her loss to Trump – followed. Clinton also claimed Trump’s promise to ‘Make America Great Again’ was ‘looking backwards.’

Footage of New York Governor Kathy Hochul telling Trump to ‘head down to Florida’ during her successful campaign in 2022 came next.

A snippet from a May MS NOW segment featuring former Georgia Congresswoman Stacey Abrams rounded out the montage.

She was seen telling The Weeknight’s Michael Steele, ‘There are no longer blue states and red states. There are authoritarian states and democracy states,’ during a discussion that had been about the administration’s redistricting efforts.

Ingraham reacted by telling a not-present Abrams that the only ‘authoritarians’ were on her side of the proverbial aisle.

‘Those are your people,’ the host emphasized. ‘Who want to control what kind of car we drive and the settings even on our thermostats.’

An incredulous Ingraham highlighted how the new 'Quality of Life' list included four states from CNBC's separate top ten best states for business, before asking 'How does that make sense?'

Ingraham pointed to ‘the people’ who helped New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani get elected and pushed Graham Platner on the unsuspecting people of Maine.

‘They want you to believe that objective facts don’t matter,’ Ingraham declared.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – whose state was also spared – similarly slammed the ranking as ‘nonsense’ in a Sunday post to X.

Oklahoma’s governor, Kevin Stitt, asked: ‘Why would “the worst states to live in” also be the states that the most people are moving to?’

Texas Congressman Lance Gooden brought up his state’s low cost of living and lack of a state income tax, after it received poor marks in healthcare, inclusiveness and reproductive rights.

Residents of Texas and Tennessee – states that ranked second-worst and worst, respectively – enjoy no state income tax.

Tennessee’s score suffered due to laws seen as discriminatory toward transgender people, as well as high rates of violent crime and fatal drug use, according to CNBC.

The Volunteer State boasts one of the top-ranked move-in markets in the country.

A law ‘requiring transgender people to use [bathroom] facilities designated for their sex at birth’ was also singled out as a negative, as was a bill signed into law by Governor Bill Lee last month that designated June ‘Nuclear Family Month.’

CNBC said the state ‘deliberately’ slighted celebrators of Pride.
