California Faces Outbreak of Severe Parasitic Diarrhea: What You Need to Know

0

A troubling parasitic outbreak known for causing intense “explosive diarrhea” has made its presence felt in California, joining a rapidly spreading health concern in the United States. Authorities caution that the official case numbers in the state likely only represent a small portion of the actual infections.

Recent state reports indicate a link between 1 and 10 cases in California and a larger outbreak affecting the state, as health officials continue their efforts to monitor its progress.

The true extent of the outbreak is elusive, as many individuals recover without seeking medical attention or undergoing testing. The detection of this parasite requires specialized lab tests, and confirmed infections can take up to six weeks to be officially reported, according to experts.

In California, most cases have been attributed to international travel rather than the expanding outbreak across several states.

Nationally, the outbreak has affected at least 2,944 individuals across 32 states, with Michigan experiencing the highest impact.

The state has reported 1,562 infections, roughly 31 times the approximately 50 cases it typically records in a year, and at least 44 people have been hospitalized.

Investigators are examining whether contaminated food is driving the spike, but they have not identified a specific produce item, supplier or grower responsible for the outbreak.

Cyclospora, the parasite behind the illness known as cyclosporiasis, is typically spread through food or water contaminated with feces.

Previous outbreaks have been traced to imported fresh produce, including raspberries, basil, snow peas, mesclun lettuce and cilantro.

According to the CDC, the illness can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including watery diarrhea “with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.”

Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss.

Symptoms usually begin about one week after infection, although they can appear anywhere from two days to two weeks later, making it more difficult for investigators to determine where someone was exposed.

The CDC recommends treating cyclosporiasis with the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, commonly sold as Bactrim, Septra and Cotrim, over a 10-day course.

As investigators continue searching for the source of the outbreak, some Taco Bell restaurants have temporarily removed fresh ingredients from their menus as a precaution.

Locations, including some in Metro Detroit, posted notices telling customers they were temporarily unable to serve lettuce, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo and guacamole because of a nationwide recall while health officials respond to the increase in cyclosporiasis cases.

Restaurants in outbreak hot spots, including Michigan and Ohio, have also pulled raw lettuce, onions, cilantro-onion mix, pico de gallo and guacamole from their menus.

However, neither the CDC nor the Food and Drug Administration has linked Taco Bell to any reported illnesses.

Heidi Klum’s Bold Confession on Body Image Challenges Hollywood Norms

0

The fashion world received an honest revelation this week when supermodel Heidi Klum opened up about embracing her body in its current, fuller, and likely healthier form. For years, the industry incessantly labeled Klum as ‘too fat,’ yet now, like many celebrities her age, she acknowledges a reality often unspoken.

In a candid interview with US Weekly, Klum shared, ‘I’m no longer a size 24 jean. But I think with age, we look better when we’re not as skinny.’

Hearing Klum express these thoughts wasn’t just refreshing; it felt like a personal triumph for those who have long advocated for body positivity.

The memory takes me back to 1999, during my tenure as the editor-in-chief of Marie Claire magazine in the United Kingdom. I had just commissioned Klum for a cover story.

At the time, Klum was in her mid-twenties, epitomizing the ideal blend of thinness and beauty. However, when the contact sheet of our cover photos arrived, there was an unexpected tension.

Klum’s eyes, under the relentless glare of the camera in close-up, were surrounded by crow’s feet. Rather than looking glum like so many models of that era, when grunge and heroin-chic were all the rage, Klum had dared to laugh in most of the pics. Hence the lines around her eyes.

I assumed Klum wouldn’t be happy and so, fairly new to the job and not yet fearless, I contacted Klum’s ‘people’, offering to air brush Klum’s eyes to perfection.

To my surprise, Klum’s response, even during her sexy Victoria’s Secret stardom, was to leave her face as nature intended. No model or Hollywood star had ever said such a thing to me.

I was thrilled to learn this week that supermodel Heidi Klum is now openly embracing what she describes as her fuller, rounder and, most likely, healthier figure

Sadly, I was over-ruled and forced to print the single pose where Klum looked moody, with the wrinkles around her eye sockets ironed out. She was understandably and commendably dismayed.

Today, this brave early champion of body positivity credits her husband, Tokio Hotel guitarist Tom Kaulitz, 36, whom she married in 2019, for encouraging her brazen  confidence. ‘He said, “You should eat more. You would look better if you had more meat on your bones.” He’s right! Proportion-wise, I look better bigger,’ the now 53-year-old Klum explained. (Agreed: ‘lollipop lady’ is never a good look.)

Despite Kaulitz’s clearly loving intent, the recovering anorexic in me cringes each time I hear about a woman changing her appearance and eating habits because a man tells her to. Anyone with an eating disorder knows that being chided to ‘just try a little’ harder can have the opposite effect on our appetite.

I grew up with parents, teachers, health workers and later a husband imploring an always slim me to eat three meals a day and snacks in between; yeah, like that’s ever going to happen!

As Bridget Jones would say, ‘Bugger off!’

Looking at photos of Klum’s husband, who is handsome but could use a spa day, makes me want to tell him to please get a haircut and a shave!

Women, of course, should have complete autonomy over their bodies, eating only for their own happiness and health. And Klum has plenty to be happy about, including four children (three with her ex-husband, the pop star Seal) and a still booming career as a model and television host.

In an industry where sacrifice (body, mind, soul) so often trumps satisfaction, Klum’s contentment is very welcome news. Especially when fat jabs now make it so easy to be thin and quiet the food ‘noise’.

A perverse side effect of these new drugs is that to be deliciously Klum-curvy is to rebel against the thin-is-in trend. By showing that she won’t be swayed, won’t succumb to the pressure for the easy way out, Klum is helping every woman to love herself and her flaws – and hopefully form an anti-fat jab resistance in the process.

While she has never admitted to using fat-shots, Demi Moore is so cadaverous, she barely casts a shadow

While she has never admitted to using fat-shots, Demi Moore is so cadaverous, she barely casts a shadow

I’ve interviewed hundreds of female film stars and models over the years and, understandably, given it’s their job to look beautiful, they are almost always wracked with insecurities, which of course makes them entirely unsuitable to be role models.

One famous actress lied about her age and puffed up to the size of a balloon when I arrived to interview her years ago. Considering that I’d first met her when she was still a schoolgirl, she was terrified by the fact I knew her true vintage.

Another huge (tiny) star, who had been married to the world’s No.1 box-office draw, was so worryingly slim that she had to sneak chicken fillets down her bra while dressing for a cover shoot to give herself a bit of cleavage. And on and on.

No woman is perfect, and I applaud Klum for having the balls to say so. As a US size 4 in my sixties, I agree that older women do not look great with scant flesh on their bones.

I could post an excoriating selfie of my own modest physique, but instead will direct you towards Demi Moore on her most recent red-carpet outings. While she has never admitted to using fat-shots, Moore is so cadaverous, she barely casts a shadow.

With Klum-styled self-love still such an outlier in Hollywood, actresses and models should be the last women we look to for guidance on our own bodies and mental wellbeing.

Instead, I would encourage young women to turn their gaze towards sports stars: it’s not the prettiest woman who won the Wimbledon Grand Slam this weekend.

It was the strongest, the woman brimming with self-belief, devoid of make-up, sweating profusely and swearing.

We should be looking toward women who are making noise and taking up space; bravo to Klum for taking up all the space she’s worked so hard and so long to secure.

Warm Sunday Anticipates Increased Storm Likelihood

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saturday was a weather rollercoaster for Central Florida, as a mix of gripping heat and dramatic storms swept through the region. Temperatures raced to the mid-to-upper 90s, prompting heat advisories, while scattered thunderstorms favored the corridors between I-4 and I-75. In Marion County, some neighborhoods experienced severe thunderstorms that left a noticeable mark. You can view some of the damage HERE. As the evening unfolded, spotty storms persisted until about 9 p.m., followed by the possibility of just a shower or two. By 10 p.m., the skies cleared, leaving behind only passing clouds and temperatures dipping into the comfortable mid-to-upper 70s.

Sunday

Heat is sub-advisory level.

As we look towards Sunday, Central Florida braces for another warm afternoon, but there’s a silver lining. The heat, though significant, won’t quite reach advisory levels, so prepare for highs in the mid-90s and heat indices ranging from 100ºF to 105ºF. More clouds bring optimism, as increased rain chances are in the forecast thanks to a stronger westerly steering flow, particularly for those east of I-4.

Rain chances increase for East Coast Sunday afternoon.

Expect spotty storms to start bubbling up around I-75 by noon, gradually advancing towards I-4 by early to mid-afternoon. As these showers journey eastward, the second half of the afternoon may see downpours reaching the coastal beaches, promising a refreshing but brief respite before they dissipate around sunset.

Next Week

A thicker plume of dust expected for Central Florida to start the week.

Our next batch of Saharan Dust will begin pushing into Central Florida next week. This will allow us to dry out the atmosphere and heat us up at the same time.

Rain chances gradually decline as dust settles in.

Rain chances will be shaved by 10% each day until we bottom out at 20% by Wednesday. Temperatures, in turn, will soar back into the upper 90s with heat indices crossing north of 105ºF.

Trump Administration Files Lawsuit Against Maryland Over ICE Cooperation Law

The Trump administration has taken legal action against the state of Maryland, challenging a newly enacted law that prevents state and local law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration bodies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This 33-page complaint was submitted on Thursday and aims to have Senate Bill 791, known as the Community Trust Act, declared unconstitutional. It also requests that a judge issues an injunction to prevent the enactment of the law.

“Despite the evident risks of sanctuary policies, the State of Maryland obstructs federal enforcement,” the lawsuit asserts. “Such a deliberate dismissal of longstanding federal laws exceeds mere political dissent; it is an active disruption that endangers public safety throughout the country.”

The lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice heavily relies on the concept of federal preemption—a doctrine rooted in the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

“The United States has well-established, preeminent, and preemptive authority to regulate immigration matters,” the filing goes on. “This authority derives from the U.S. Constitution, numerous acts of Congress, and binding U.S. Supreme Court precedent. Indeed, Congress last year strengthened that authority with the enactment of the Laken Riley Act.”

To hear the DOJ tell it, the government is both expressly able to preempt state law regarding immigration and can implicitly override Maryland because the state law conflicts with federal authority.

“The challenged provisions of Maryland law reflect an effort to obstruct the operation of federal immigration law and to impede the consultation and communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for federal officials to carry out federal immigration law and keep Americans safe,” the lawsuit continues.

Specifically, the government says the Laken Riley Act “mandates the federal detention of illegal immigrants who are accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.”

The DOJ also claims there are problems with the Community Trust Act that, while not spelled out, could affect immigration agents.

From the lawsuit, at length:

Under these laws, state and local officers and facilities are unable to comply with immigration detainers and civil immigration warrants in most instances. They are also generally prohibited from providing information to federal immigration authorities at all, including regarding the custody status or release of a targeted illegal alien. And the Community Trust Act limits the ability of state and local law enforcement officers to work with federal officers to effect the safe transfer of such individuals to federal immigration custody, even when federal officials present a federal administrative warrant.

The DOJ also insists the “harms visited by the Community Trust Act’s obstructive innovations are not merely theoretical.”

Again, the filing at length:

On May 29, 2026, a warden of the Worcester County Jail in Snow Hill, Maryland—a local correctional facility that had historically cooperated with ICE—contacted an acting Supervisory Detention and Deportation Officer to explain that, in accordance with the Community Trust Act, the facility would no longer honor ICE detainers, release individuals to ICE custody, or notify ICE when individuals are in custody and ready for release. As a direct result, the facility denied a scheduled ICE pickup that morning and did not release the individual in question to ICE custody.

State officials have made clear that Worcester County Jail’s approach is the right one under the Community Trust Act.

The lawsuit also contains two counts premised on immunity – alleging the Maryland law attempts to unlawfully regulate federal law enforcement and discriminates against immigration agents.

“Federal immigration officers merely enforce the laws that our Nation’s elected representatives in Congress passed, reflecting the will of We the People,” Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said in a press release announcing the litigation. “When sanctuary jurisdictions enact laws to shield illegal aliens from federal law enforcement, it is not merely federal law that is violated, but the voices of everyday American voters silenced.”

Chicago Archdiocese Reveals Decades-Old Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Michael Pfleger at St. Sabina

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Father Michael Pfleger is currently under investigation following an accusation of sexual abuse against a minor, as disclosed by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Archbishop of Chicago, on Saturday.

According to a letter from Cardinal Cupich, the alleged incident reportedly took place over three decades ago at Saint Sabina Parish, located at 1210 W. 78th Pl., in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham area.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“In line with our child protection policies, I have requested that Father Pfleger temporarily step down from his ministry duties and reside away from the parish during the investigation,” the letter stated. It also noted, “However, it is important to mention that Father Pfleger vehemently denies the allegation.”

In the meantime, Father Thulani Magwaza will continue his role as pastor of St. Sabina, as mentioned in the letter.

In a statement released Saturday evening, Pfleger addressed the allegation, saying, “On Thursday, July 9th, I was informed by the Vicar for Priests that a woman who attended school at St. Sabina accused me of sexual abuse occurring between 1993 and 1995. I must state unequivocally that this is a false accusation. Throughout my 51 years of ministry, I have faced threats, slander, and attacks…”

“Let me be clear, sexual abuse is wrong and I realize that the Catholic Church has a long history of not dealing with accusations and has spent a number of years putting strong policies in place, but I have said countless times I believe the current policy is wrong and unfair to the accused priest,” Pfleger’s statement continued. “Before an investigation or even a conversation has taken place a priest is removed and told to remain silent during their process. The presumption of innocence does not exist for priests. But at this point, I will no longer be quiet. I have no memory of this girl nor do countless others who have been at St. Sabina for those years. The statement she has supposedly made is absolutely not true, and the facts will show that this is just an attempt by someone who is either being unfairly manipulated by others to hurt my reputation, or who is simply trying to make money by making false accusations.

“I believe this is another attempt and another attack by those who have sought to destroy me for years and another attempt by someone to get money from the Archdiocese and to silence me.

“I will not stand by and allow my name, my ministry, and the church I pastor to be slandered or defamed.”

Pfleger has faced multiple similar allegations in recent years, but was later reinstated by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

This is a developing story.

Enhance Posture Rapidly with These 4 Standing Exercises for Those Over 60

0

Enhance your posture effectively by incorporating these exercises into your fitness routine.

>

It’s surprisingly common to develop bad posture, often a result of slouching while working at a desk, relaxing on the sofa, or peering down at a smartphone. Over time, this slouching becomes routine, causing your muscles and tissues to adjust to the poor positioning and leading to structural imbalance.

Good posture is about more than just looking confident; it’s essential for proper body alignment. A well-aligned body evenly spreads weight, helping your muscles, bones, and ligaments to stay balanced. This can prevent neck, shoulder, and back pain, reduce unnecessary joint strain, and even improve breathing and digestion.

We’ve discovered four standing exercises to help you begin your posture-improvement journey, offering quicker results than yoga sessions for those over 60.

“While yoga and floor exercises excel in boosting flexibility and range of motion, standing exercises specifically target the muscles responsible for posture, balance, and body awareness—crucial for everyday actions such as standing, walking, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries. These benefits often translate directly into daily life, enhancing your body’s ability to maintain proper alignment in an upright position,” notes Jenna Armitage, a seasoned yoga and Pilates instructor and the Founder of GoodGood Studio, infrared mat-based fitness centers located in Southwest London.

Keep in mind that it’s not the goal to chase a “perfect military posture.” According to Andrew Menechian, Co-Founder and Head of Fitness at FitCommit, “I would rather see a relaxed tall position: head over ribs, ribs over pelvis, feet steady, shoulders not jammed back. That is the version people can actually keep.” Menechian has over 12 years of experience in the fitness industry and has mentored more than 100 personal trainers through education roles at The Fitness Playground and Clean Health Fitness Institute.

Below, Armitage and Menechian share four excellent standing exercises that can help restore your posture.

Wall Angels

“This exercise teaches the upper back and shoulders to open without forcing the lower back to arch,” Menechian says.

  1. Stand tall with your back pressed against a wall, your elbows bent to 90 degrees, and the backs of your hands against the wall.
  2. Slowly reach your arms overhead while pressing your arms into the wall and keeping your core engaged throughout.
  3. Lower your arms.
  4. Use control to return to the start position.

5 Quick Exercises to Improve Your Posture Instantly

Standing Band Pull-Aparts

“A lot of rounded posture is not just tight chest muscles. The upper back also gets lazy, and this wakes it up fast,” Menechian explains.

  1. Begin by standing tall.
  2. Hold the resistance band ahead of you with arms fully extended at shoulder height.
  3. Pull the band apart, stretching your arms laterally while keeping them fully straight.
  4. Use control to return to the start position.

The 6-Minute Morning Routine That Restores Posture Faster Than the Gym After 60

Supported Standing Spine Lengthener

“This creates space through the spine, relieves compression, and can feel particularly beneficial for those experiencing tightness through the upper and mid-back,” Armitage tells us.

  1. Place your hands on the back of a sturdy chair.
  2. Hinge forward at the hips until your torso forms a 90-degree angle with your legs. Think of creating length between the crown of your head and your tailbone.
  3. Return to the start position.

5 Standing Exercises That Restore Posture Faster Than Floor Exercises After 60

Supported Hip Flexor Stretch

“Tight hip flexors are one of the biggest contributors to poor posture, particularly in adults who spend long periods sitting. Opening the front of the hips helps the body return to a more neutral standing position,” Armitage says.

  1. Begin standing tall, holding onto a sturdy chair or wall for support.
  2. Step into a gentle lunge, keeping your torso upright.
  3. Stay for 6 to 8 slow breaths.

Army Black Hawks Rescue Over 200 Campers Amid Missouri Floods, Over 350 Total Rescued

0

Friday marked a critical intervention by the Army National Guard’s Black Hawk helicopters in Reynolds County, Missouri. They flew into perilous conditions to rescue 202 young campers and staff caught by the swift encroachment of floodwaters at Camp Taum Sauk, nestled along the Black River in the scenic Missouri Ozarks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released nail-biting footage capturing the frantic urgency as children raced to board the helicopters, their escape routes disappearing beneath the advancing waters.

Met by relief and cheers, the young campers, aged between 8 and 16, along with their dedicated counselors, were safely evacuated to St. Louis. There, troopers confirmed they were joyfully reunited with their anxious families.

“We are beyond thankful for your help keeping our camp community safe,” read an emotional Instagram post from Camp Taum Sauk officials Saturday. Their heartfelt thanks extended to the National Guard, Reynolds County 911 Emergency Responders, and the supportive local Arcadia community.

The historic coed camp has been in operation in Lesterville, roughly 125 miles south of St. Louis, since 1946.

The camper rescue comes just over a year after the Guadalupe River in Texas Hill Country flooded on July 4, 2025, taking the lives of at least 135 people, including 28 people at all-girls Camp Mystic.

Nearby, operators of the Bearcat Getaway campground closed their facilities for the weekend and confirmed on Facebook Friday afternoon that all campers and staff were safe and accounted for.

The dramatic aerial rescue at Camp Taum Sauk was part of a large, coordinated emergency response across Missouri after a relentless storm system dumped 6 to 12 inches of rain on central, south-central and southeastern parts of the state.

Following an executive order by Gov. Mike Kehoe declaring a state of emergency, local emergency personnel performed at least 351 swift-water rescues across the region.

“Missouri’s first responders once again answered the call with extraordinary bravery, professionalism, and compassion,” Kehoe wrote in a statement on Facebook.

State officials are urging vigilance as the National Weather Service warned the already saturated soils could see an additional 2 to 4 inches of rainfall through the weekend.

Homeless Man Accused of Assaulting Teen He Met at Gas Station

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have charged 26-year-old Willie Dwayne West IV with two counts of sexual battery involving a minor under 18. The charges stem from an incident where he allegedly picked up a 14-year-old girl at a gas station and engaged in sexual activity with her.

According to the Gainesville Police Department, the young girl recounted meeting West on June 16 at a gas station. After a conversation, she agreed to accompany him in his car, which she noted was also his residence.

The girl described how they traveled to a nearby Publix, where West suggested they move to the back seat. There, the two reportedly began engaging in sexual acts.

She further stated that she spent the night with West inside his vehicle parked at the Publix. The following morning, West brought her along to his job as a trash collector, leaving her in the car throughout his shift. Afterward, he dropped her off at a library, never returning to pick her up.

The detective reviewed surveillance video from the gas station and reportedly saw a man talking to the victim before the victim got into his vehicle. The detective took a screenshot from the video and went to the GFL garbage company, where a manager identified West and said he used to work for the company. The victim positively identified West in a photo lineup.

West was arrested on July 7 and charged with two counts of sexual battery of a victim under the age of 18. He was previously arrested in Alachua County in 2024 for threatening to shoot a man, but the charge was later dropped; he was also arrested on a lewd/lascivious charge in Marion County in 2020 that was dropped after the victim stopped cooperating. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

MONA Museum Expands to Bangkok: Hobart’s Iconic Art Destination Goes Global

0

A groundbreaking new iteration of Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is set to debut in Bangkok, promising to be both unconventional and one-of-a-kind.

The bustling Thai capital is no stranger to contemporary art, already hosting prominent events like the Bangkok Art Biennale.

Leigh Carmichael, the innovative mind behind MONA’s sister company DarkLab, shared that this expansion will infuse the enchanting creative energy of the Hobart museum into a fresh and exciting setting.

He expressed, “The venture will both stand out and captivate, showcasing internationally acclaimed artists while fostering rich, meaningful exchanges with Thai creatives, audiences, and cultural practices.”

Mona, which made its debut in 2011, was an ambitious creation by entrepreneur David Walsh, nestled in scenic bushland along the River Derwent.

Popular with visitors for its provocative installations including the famed wall of vulvas, MONA is also the creative force behind Hobart’s mid-winter Dark Mofo festival, which features the city’s annual nude solstice swim.

It’s intended for the Thai museum to be constructed on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Thai real estate company Asset World Corp, majority-owned by billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, will partner in the development.

The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding in Bangkok.

“Having spent most of the last 25 years studying how museums work, AWC has presented us with a remarkable opportunity to take what we’ve learned to one of the great tourist centres of the world,” White said.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has welcomed the landmark partnership, describing it as a defining moment for the island state’s cultural and economic future.

Speaking in Bangkok, he said the project would create economic and cultural activity for Tasmania and strengthen ties with Thailand.

“MONA has transformed Tasmania, attracting visitors from around the world and helping establish the State as a globally recognised creative destination,” Rockliff said.

“MONA’s next project places Tasmania at the global forefront of the cultural landscape and is a credit to the passion of David Walsh, Leigh Carmichael and all the MONA team.”

It’s understood AWC and MONA first connected during a 2025 Tasmanian government trade and investment mission.

After more than four years of construction, MONA opened its new library featuring Walsh’s personal collection in June.

With a price tag of more than $100 million, the half-underground extension features an R-rated section and original handwritten David Bowie lyrics.

Its creation involved the excavation of eight Olympic swimming pools’ worth of rubble.
