Cardi B and Soccer Star Maduka Okoye Spark Romance Rumors at Paris Fashion Week

Fans of Cardi B are buzzing about a potential romance between the rapper and Nigerian footballer Maduka Okoye following their flirtatious encounter during Paris Fashion Week.

The pair were spotted sitting together at the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture show on Wednesday, sparking plenty of speculation.

Cardi B, 33, made a bold fashion statement in an eye-catching zebra bodysuit, complemented by towering black platform boots.

Maduka Okoye, who has been in a on-again, off-again relationship with Dutch model Jelicia Westhoff since late 2021, appeared stylish in a mint green vest paired with matching pants and a crisp white tank top for the event in France.

In a chivalrous gesture, he assisted Cardi B to her seat by holding her hand, adding fuel to the swirling rumors.

TikTok users gushed over the pair “look[ing] good together” — even before their flirtatious exchange on a Parisian restaurant’s terrace.

Cardi and Okoye, 26, were all smiles chatting with each other in a viral clip, and the Grammy winner could be seen laughing.

“Maduka is really making Cardi B blush out here,” one fan tweeted, with another claiming the songwriter “look[ed] like she [was] having butterflies.”

Others, however, poked fun at social media going into “meltdown mode” over the pair’s interactions.

Cardi’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

The “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker’s last public relationship was with another athlete — NFL player Stefon Diggs.

The on-again, off-again couple debuted their romance in May 2025 on the heels of Cardi and estranged husband Offset’s split.

The American Music Award winner announced four months later that she was pregnant with baby No. 3, her first child with Diggs.

The little one, now 8 months, was born in November 2025, and his name has yet to be revealed.

Cardi and Diggs, 32, broke up earlier this year, only to pack on the PDA while celebrating Mother’s Day — and then have a heated coffee shop clash caught on camera in May.

The current status of their romance remains unclear.

As for Okoye and Westhoff, they share a son named Isaiah.

Georgia Harrison, who is expecting her first child, turned heads in Mayfair, London as she visited the popular Sketch restaurant on Wednesday.

The former Love Island personality, now 30, revealed on April 10 that she and her boyfriend, Jack Stacey, are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first baby.

During her recent outing, Georgia, glowing with motherhood, tenderly held her growing baby bump, dressed in a lovely pink maxi dress fit for summer.

The delightful dress she wore was adorned with buttons down the front and accented with layers of exquisite floral lace, adding a touch of elegance.

To complement her outfit, she chose a chic gold bag from Kurt Geiger and matching sandals, finishing the look with beaded jewelry accessories.

Georgia pulled her golden locks into a chic updo, leaving two strands loose to frame her face.

The beauty appeared in high spirits as she posed for snaps before making her way inside the trendy venue.

It comes after Georgia took to her Instagram earlier in the month to share a cute bikini-clad first-trimester video taken before her first scan.

The clip began with Georgia looking sensational in a stylish baby blue bikini and white lace beach trousers as she enjoyed a day at the beach.

She then unbuttoned her trousers and cradled her tummy while lip-syncing to the popular TikTok audio: ‘Are you real? I dunno, you seem a little sus.’

She cheekily captioned the video: ‘Me before I had my first ultrasound.’

The star recently revealed she has a ‘whole new drive’ to change the world for the better – just weeks after announcing she is expecting her first child.

The reality TV star explained in a new interview that she wants to make the world a better environment for her unborn baby to grow up in by continuing her campaigning on the issue of revenge porn.

Georgia told OK! Magazine: ‘I initially thought of my little sisters and brother when I was campaigning – hoping to make things different for them.

‘Now, I have this whole new drive – I want the world to be a better place because I’m bringing my own child into it.’

Georgia met Jack, 33, on a dating app last summer and described her pregnancy as a ‘beautiful surprise’.

Georgia said: ‘We both definitely wanted children, but we didn’t quite plan on it this soon, we might’ve tried to have a fun summer beforehand! But once we’d taken it in, we realised this was the right time.

The star added that it’s ‘amazing to have the gift of being pregnant’, as so many people struggle for a long time and for some, the dream never comes true.

Georgia also explained to the publication that she was hesitant before starting her relationship with City worker Jack after her former partner, Stephen Bear, 35, shared a private video of them on the internet without her consent.

The Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star explained that she was quite ‘pessimistic’ about love in general after the ordeal. However, she wanted to make an effort to meet someone.

Now, she has her partner Jack, who treats her well, and the pair are expecting their first child together.

Elsewhere in the interview, Georgia was particularly emotional about telling her mother, Nicola, that she was expecting.

The star said that her mum has watched her ‘go through everything’ and has always reassured her that everything will be okay and that she would finally meet someone and get her ‘happy ending’.

So, Georgia added that her mother seeing her at this happy stage in life is ‘such a relief for her’.

The stunner announced her happy news via Instagram in April after a whirlwind ten-month romance with Jack.

She told followers: ‘We’ve been keeping a secret! Me and Jack are having a baby! Due November 2025, we can’t wait to welcome this little one into the world and embrace all the joy and love he or she will bring.

‘I still can’t believe I’ve finally got everything I ever wanted and I couldn’t be more grateful…And just like that 2 are about to become 3.’

Ohio Family Drama: Relative Forced Into Isolation After Discovery of 16 Neglected Children

In a shocking discovery in Ohio, 16 children were found living in deplorable conditions, prompting a relative of the accused family members to break their silence.

Ronnie Fletcher, married to one of the adult children of Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, expressed disbelief to WOWK, explaining that the family was unaware of the appalling situation where the children were found living among filth and overcrowding.

“Had we known about the conditions in that house,” Fletcher insisted, “we would have taken action ourselves, whether that meant bringing the kids to live with us or providing financial help.”

What Are the Allegations Against the Siders Family?

The parents, Gary Sr., Christina, along with Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders, are facing serious legal charges. Authorities have charged them with 16 counts of child endangerment following the discovery of the children, aged 18 months to 18 years, in squalor inside a Vinton County residence. According to a statement from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, all four family members have pleaded not guilty.

At a July 1 press conference streamed by WBNS, Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain painted a grim picture of the living conditions, comparing it unfavorably even to that of livestock. “The presence of bacteria and human feces was high,” he said, describing the scene as “just a disgusting sight.”

Officials described the children, who were not attending school, as having limited speech abilities and spending most of the last four years inside a 12 by 12 room. According to Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson, who also spoke at the press conference, the children looked “almost feral.”

Siders Family Relative Reports Getting Death Threats

Fletcher—who described having a “distant” relationship with the family—said he was “horrified” to learn about the conditions and worried for the children.

“We did not really know what was going on there,” he told WOWK. “The last time we heard from them, we gave them a car, and that’s probably close to a year ago now.”

He added that the family had kept them at “arm’s length” and he hadn’t been sure how many children had been living at the home.

“We knew they didn’t go to a school,” he said, “but we was always told they was being homeschooled.”

In the aftermath of the arrests, Fletcher said his family has faced intense public scrutiny.

“It’s been awful for the people that had no idea that was going on the house that are related to this family,” he told the outlet. “I mean, we’ve had death threats—we’ve been told that we need to be put in front of an execution line of guns and, you know, killed and burned. I mean, it’s been bad.”

Fletcher said his family is now living as “hermits” and his wife is afraid to go to work as a result of the threats.

“So all this is taking money off our table,” he said, “because we can’t live our normal lives because the way these people are trying to treat us on something we didn’t have nothing to do with.”

Elizabeth Siders’ Attorney Says She is Mother to All 16 Children

In the days after the arrest, new details are emerging about the Siders family.

Elizabeth’s attorney Tommy Stolly told WBNS that it’s believed that Elizabeth is the mother of all 16 children.

She wed Gary Jr. in 2008 at the age of 15 and gave birth to her first child just two months later, the outlet reported.

“At this point in time, we are still not sure, at least at my office, whether my client is a victim herself or not,” Stolly told the outlet. “I have previously stated she does not characterize herself as a victim, but the investigation from the prosecutor’s office and my office is still ongoing.”

He described his client as being in shock about the arrest.

Oxygen reached out to Stolly, but did not receive an immediate reply. Oxygen also reached out to Gary Jr.’s attorney R. Lee Roberts Jr., who declined to comment on the allegations or teen marriage.

Ohio vital statistic records obtained by WOWK, also show that Elizabeth gave birth prematurely at 24 weeks to conjoined twins at a Columbus hospital on Nov. 20, 2022.

The girls—named Bailey Lee and Faith Lee Siders—were conjoined with thoracopagus, the most common form of conjoined twins which results in them being joined at the face, chest and upper abdomen, per the records. Their parents were listed as Elizabeth and Gary Siders Jr.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Oxygen, none of the charges the couple is now facing are connected to any children born the same date as the conjoined twins, who died of natural causes.

Though the four family members were initially facing 17 charges, a spokesperson for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office confirmed to Oxygen that they were each arraigned on 16 counts.

All four are currently being held on $300,000 bond, prosecutors said.

Analyzing the Shortcomings of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Adaptation

In the days following the release of the second season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix in June 2026, reports surfaced revealing a sharp decline in viewership compared to its inaugural season. Facing numerous production challenges, the series struggled to find its footing, with critiques often highlighting its persistent identity crisis. Although the third and final season is slated for a 2027 release on Netflix, it’s apparent that the show hasn’t met expectations. While the original animated “Last Airbender” broke new ground and became a cultural phenomenon, its live-action adaptation has unfortunately not managed to capture the same magic and is struggling to gain traction.

While critics might be quick to point fingers at the inherent difficulties in transforming a beloved animated series into a live-action format, there are deeper issues contributing to its lackluster performance on Netflix. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” falters for several reasons, many rooted in the shadows cast by previous adaptations, which were beyond the current creative team’s control.

Moreover, internal artistic challenges have hindered “Avatar: The Last Airbender” from achieving its full potential. These are compounded by the type of content that typically thrives on Netflix. While this version of “The Last Airbender” has seen audiences drift away, dissecting exactly what went wrong offers a trove of insights.

There is inherent toxicity surrounding live-action Avatar material

A significant hurdle for Netflix’s “Last Airbender” is overcoming the negative legacy left by M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 film adaptation, which tarnished the live-action concept for many fans. The movie was plagued from inception by casting controversies related to accusations of whitewashing and was marred by various other issues, establishing a challenging reputation that the Netflix series struggles against.

The film’s script was widely criticized for poor dialogue, and attempts to translate the dynamic element-bending of the animated series into live-action were seen as laughable. The young cast’s performances suffered from inadequate direction, and scenes that bewildered fans only compounded the movie’s flaws. In the end, “The Last Airbender” was deemed one of the worst films upon release, almost instantly tainting the idea of translating this franchise from the animated realm.

With “Avatar: The Last Airbender” fans rejecting the last attempt to remake this story into live-action, Netflix’s foray into live-action “Airbender” media was always working at a disadvantage. Those dreadful first impressions are impossible to recover from.

The most successful Netflix shows are often original IP

Netflix has spent a pretty penny on its various exclusive TV shows ever since it started launching original programming in 2013, and Netflix’s all-time most expensive shows vividly demonstrate just how costly this practice has become. All those dollars, though, haven’t been able to counter the reality that Netflix TV shows are often more successful when they’re based on an original IP (or at least material that hasn’t been adapted into live-action before). With the exception of “Wednesday,” the biggest Netflix shows in history are original programs that originated with the streamer, like “Bridgerton,” “Stranger Things,” or “Squid Game.” Attempts to recreate and/or continue past pop culture successes, like “That ’90s Show” or “Cowboy Bebop,” just don’t catch on.

After all, audiences already have “Resident Evil” properties they can watch elsewhere, but “Stranger Things” or “Squid Game” stood out as something unique you couldn’t get anywhere else. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” appears to have suffered from this same phenomenon. Given that it was just adapting the familiar and beloved cartoon seasons of “Last Airbender” into live-action, fans could just revisit those pre-existing episodes rather than risk venturing into another live-action “Avatar”  mess.

In other words, Netflix’s “Last Airbender” wasn’t singular enough to stand out in the crowded streaming programming landscape. But if it’s any consolation to the folks behind the show, “Last Airbender” is one of several Netflix TV show remakes/continuations that suffered from this problem.

The show couldn’t escape its middling reputation

When the live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” show began airing in February 2024, its initial critical response wasn’t exactly glowing. On the contrary, the generally middling reviews had people claiming that “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a live-action remake bound to annoy fans and bore newcomers. A hefty Netflix budget and lots of familiar character names weren’t enough to get people actually invested in the program. Particular criticism was directed at the dreary atmosphere, a problem that also besieged the 2010 movie. The years and storytelling mediums had changed, but the problems plaguing live-action “Last Airbender” adaptations persisted.

Given that the inaugural season failed to garner much of an independent or passionate fanbase, there just wasn’t much buzz or demand for further “Last Airbender” episodes. Inevitably, this show’s second season suffered from a mighty drop in viewership. How could it not? “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was built on a pre-existing brand name, but it failed to cultivate either a fanbase or distinctive personality that could guarantee strong viewership. The fact that the general critical reception for Season 2 didn’t improve much likely also kept fans from giving this Netflix production another shot.

Given how many TV shows are out there (including accessible reruns of the original “Avatar: The Last Airbender”), you need something special to stand out to people. A middlingly received “Last Airbender” remake that zapped all the fun from this universe wasn’t going to inspire viewership enthusiasm.

The second season faced tremendous competition

In general, Netflix shows in 2025 and 2026 have struggled to keep viewership momentum up for their second seasons. That means the steep viewership drop for the second season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is part of a larger problem with the streaming platform. Still, “The Last Airbender” could have mitigated some of that bleeding if Netflix had chosen a better spot to launch this season. These seven episodes hit Netflix on June 25, 2026, just four days after the third season premiere of “House of the Dragon” aired on HBO. With critics dubbing this season of “House of the Dragon” season a fiery triumph, there was a lot of upbeat buzz surrounding the “Game of Thrones” prequel’s return.

Such buzz already overshadowed Season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” To compound these problems, the fifth and final season of “The Bear” also debuted all eight of its episodes on June 25, 2026. On the surface, neither “House” nor “The Bear” may seem like they’re directly targeting the same audience as “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” However, given the massive costs of this program, “The Last Airbender” needed to be an all-ages TV event to register as a success. In contrast, its second season premiered just as “The Bear” and “House of the Dragon” dominated all TV conversation.

Thanks to this baffling scheduling, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” inevitably succumbed to Netflix’s pervasive problem with creating multi-season hit shows. There was no room for this program’s second season in the crowded late June 2026 landscape.

There is growing audience disillusionment with live-action remakes

In recent years, some of Disney’s biggest box office bombs of all time have belonged to the once financially bulletproof genre of live-action remakes of the studio’s classic animated fare. “Mufasa: The Lion King” and 2025’s “Lilo and Stitch” showed these titles could still make major cash, but recent titles like “Cruella” and “Snow White” failed to make a dent with audiences. Meanwhile, advanced ticket sales and tracking for the live-action take on “Moana” haven’t been extraordinary. Unsurprisingly, the Mouse House has begun shelving some planned live-action remakes, including new takes on “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Aristocats.”

This suggests that audiences have begun to grow a bit weary of the cavalcade of live-action remakes of beloved animated properties. With animated storytelling of all stripes ruling over the box office and streaming landscape, these live-action retreads of familiar stories feel extra redundant. People are more interested in fresh animated tales like “Hoppers” or “KPop Demon Hunters,” not live-action retellings of recognizable yarns (albeit now with less color and personality). Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” seems to have gotten caught up in this shifting cultural status quo.

What could have been a big hit in 2018 or 2019 is now out of step with current audience demands. 2025’s box office hits like “Lilo and Stitch” and “How to Train Your Dragon” suggest there’s still some place for these stories, but “The Last Airbender” going up in flames also reflects the perilous reality these productions must now contend with.

Federal Inmates Set to Receive Tablets for Messaging in Bureau of Prisons’ Modernization Initiative

0

In a move designed to promote educational and career progression among federal inmates, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) plans to distribute tablets to its prison population. The initiative underscores the agency’s commitment to shaping a rehabilitative environment behind bars.

Announced this past Wednesday, the BOP revealed it had sealed a transformative tablet services contract aimed at overhauling its approach to communication, education, rehabilitation, and day-to-day operations in its facilities nationwide. This development is part of a larger effort to modernize and improve the prison system.

With the introduction of these devices, inmates will also gain access to secure messaging and video services. These tools are intended to foster stronger, healthier relationships with family and friends, a proven strategy that has been linked to reduced recidivism rates.

Per the announcement, the tablets will be made available to all inmates in BOP custody. There are more than 138,000 prisoners in federal corrections facilities.

“Our first priority is the safety of our staff and the security of our institutions,” said BOP Director William K. Marshall III. “This contract modernizes outdated operations, reduces administrative burdens, and allows staff to focus on the critical work of maintaining safe facilities while expanding opportunities for rehabilitation and successful reentry.”

Officials said the tablets will assist inmates with literacy support, evidence-based rehabilitative programs, faith-based materials, health care information and job preparation content.

The tablets will also reduce administrative burden for staff by moving traditionally paper-dependent tasks, such as commissary ordering and program registration, onto a digital platform.

The BOP stressed that the devices will be rolled out in phases across its vast network of prisons, with each implementation being guided by “strict security protocols and oversight.”

The timeline for the rollout is not clear. Fox News reached out to the BOP for further comment.

Virtually every state prison system now has some form of tablet program, though the scope, vendor, features, and rollout model vary widely. In 2019, only a dozen states had tablets in prisons, according to Law360.

Oregon is the most recent state to begin implementing a model where each inmate gets their own tablet.

In April, the state’s Department of Corrections said one of the primary motivations for doing this was to cut down on drugs getting smuggled into prisons through the mail.

Once the program is fully in place, officials will scan inmate’s mail and send it to them via their tablet, cutting off any ability for them to receive illicit packages while behind bars, Oregon’s DOC said in June.

Virginia Considers Raising Fishing and Hunting License Fees: Here’s How to Share Your Opinion

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — Virginians who enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and boating may soon find these pastimes a bit more costly. A new proposal seeks to increase the fees for fishing and hunting licenses, as well as boat registrations across the state.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (VDWR) has been grappling with a budget shortfall this year, leading to the consideration of these fee hikes. This financial gap has posed challenges for wildlife management, conservation policing, and fish stocking programs, which are vital to maintaining the state’s natural resources and ensuring they thrive.

It’s worth noting that these fees have remained unchanged for over a decade, since 2012. With inflation on the rise, what cost a dollar in 2012 is equivalent to just 70 cents today. This diminished purchasing power has made it increasingly difficult to sustain the current level of services.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the decision-making process. The VDWR is actively seeking public comments on the proposed fee increases. Feedback can be submitted through mail, in-person, or online, though online submissions require registration. The window for public commentary is open until August 5, 2026.

Although the VDWR has managed to fund its operations this year using budget amendments and a state loan, these measures are merely temporary fixes. A more sustainable financial solution is necessary to prevent future shortfalls, which are exacerbated by a loophole in state law.

The Virginia General Assembly passed a law more than a decade ago earmarking a percentage of sales tax on outdoor gear for the VDWR. However, that law allows lawmakers to shift those funds to other agencies and projects. It has been several years since VDWR has received full funding from those taxes.

The Hidden Stress of Success: Why High-Performers Fall Ill on Vacation

0

As the out-of-office response activates and the laptop finally closes, the eagerly anticipated vacation is set in motion.

However, this blissful escape can be disrupted by an all-too-familiar trio: a sore throat, a congested nose, and a relentless headache.

In a twist of fate, after weeks spent juggling demanding deadlines and unending tasks, some high achievers encounter illness just as they begin to unwind.

A woman in a bright orange bikini blows her nose with a tissue while relaxing in a beach chair.

Some women say they come down with a cold just as vacation begins. Antonioguillem – stock.adobe.com

This phenomenon has been highlighted in a TikTok video by somatic instructor Liz Tenuto, who suggests that it’s common for “high-achieving women to catch a cold on the second day of every single vacation.”

Tenuto explains that chronic stress over extended periods keeps cortisol levels high, enabling women to persevere through fatigue. But once they finally pause to relax, their bodies appear to relent into a state of exhaustion.

The video struck a nerve.

“Literally happened to me every vacation since I was a child,” one user wrote.

“As a teacher, this happens EVERY extended break we have,” another commented. “I get so sick on the first/second day that I spend the whole week just recovering.”

“It is me. I am this woman. Happens on almost every single vacation!” another wrote.

Tenuto attributed the pattern to what’s often called the let-down effect — the idea that some people become ill shortly after a stressful period ends.

While the TikTok isn’t medical gospel, experts say it is pointing toward a real and biologically plausible phenomenon.

@theworkoutwitch

the let-down effect is when someone develops symptoms of illness, fatigue, pain, migraines, or emotional distress immediately after a period of prolonged stress ends 👇🏼 researchers have observed that people are more likely to get sick on vacation, on weekends, after major work deadlines, after caregiving crisises, or after big life events like moving or athletic competitions the science behind this is: during periods of sustained stress, the body’s stress-response systems help maintain performance and temporarily alter immune, inflammatory, and pain-processing functions but when the stressor ends, and the body shifts into recovery mode, symptoms that were previously suppressed or postponed become noticeable it’s not that relaxation or vacation makes you sick… it’s that relaxation finally gave your body permission to reveal how depleted it already was, which resulted in sickness the moment you slowed down do you want to lower your cortisol so your immune system can stabilize and you don’t get sick when you go on vacation? 👇🏼 “lower my cortisol” 🔗 on my profile 💖✌🏼💖 • • • #immunesystem #highacheiver #hyperindependent #stressed #stress

♬ SUMMER – THE CARTERS

“The body does not always switch from high-output survival mode into rest mode smoothly,” Dr. Henry Legere, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Restore Hyper Wellness told The Post.

“For some people — especially high-responsibility, high-performing individuals — the first few days of vacation are when the bill for chronic stress finally comes due.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean relaxation itself causes illness.

Rather, Legere said prolonged stress can keep the body in a heightened fight-or-flight state, fueled by hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. During that time, sleep often suffers, the immune system shifts and many people simply unknowingly push through aches, fatigue and similar early stages of illness.

A middle-aged Hispanic woman, wearing a sunhat and seated on a sofa, coughs into her hand while packing a suitcase with summer clothes.

Legere says the transition from chronic stress to relaxation may help explain why some people notice headaches, fatigue or cold-like symptoms. Krakenimages.com – stock.adobe.com

“When stress abruptly drops, people may notice symptoms more, inflammatory pathways may rebound, migraines can be triggered, and latent viral or respiratory symptoms may become apparent,” he explained.

Scientists sometimes refer to this as leisure sickness, but Legere cautioned that neither leisure sickness nor the let-down effect is an official medical diagnosis. While intriguing, the research is also limited.

One small Dutch study published in 2002 found that roughly 3% of participants reported regularly becoming sick during weekends or vacations, with headaches, fatigue, muscles aches, nausea and cold-like symptoms among the most common complaints. Researchers observed that symptoms often appeared during the first few days off and suggested the transition from chronic work activation to relaxation could play a role.

Still, the study relied largely on self-reported experiences, with the authors themselves calling for more research.

So is getting sick the minute vacation begins all in your head? Not necessarily.

“It’s directionally credible, but likely overstated,” said Legere of the viral TikTok.

There also isn’t strong evidence that the phenomenon affects achieving women in particular. While that group may identify with the trend, Legere says anyone living under prolonged stress could potentially experience a similar rebound.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that vacation doesn’t have to end with tissues and throat lozenges. Legere recommends easing into time off instead of treating vacation like an on-off switch.

That means gradually wrapping up major work projects instead of sprinting to the finish line, protecting sleep in the days leading up to travel and staying well hydrated before and during the trip.

He also advised limiting heavy drinking, keeping caffeine habits relatively consistent to avoid withdrawal headaches and fitting in light movement — such as walking or stretching — on travel days to help the body adjust.

Perhaps most importantly, resist the urge to pack every minute of vacation with activities. If possible, build in a decompression day.

“Treat vacation as recovery training rather than total collapse,” said Legere.

Unlock the Secret: Why Beetroot is the Ultimate Powerhouse for Weight Loss

0

Handling beetroot can sometimes transform your kitchen into a scene straight out of a detective novel, but the striking red vegetable packs a powerful punch.

Rich in vital vitamins, minerals, and nitrates, beetroot is associated with enhanced vascular health, improved athletic performance, and even a heightened libido.

Its brilliant hue comes from anti-inflammatory antioxidants that are praised for their ability to potentially enhance overall well-being.

Adding to its reputation, beetroot is a staple for actor Paul Rudd, who at 57, incredibly maintains the appearance of a man decades younger.

“Beetroot is a regular in my diet, not just for its potential to support exercise and healthy blood pressure, but also for its earthy taste and vibrant, fun color,” workplace wellness nutritionist Lily Soutter shared with the Daily Mail.

‘Enjoying beetroot is a great way to boost intake of fibre, folate, manganese and potassium.

‘Not only do I love adding beetroot to a simple salad, but I also add beetroot juice when making bread, pasta and even dips for a nutrient boost and a fun red/purple colour.’

With so many reasons to eat beetroot – and so many ways to add it to your diet – we take a closer look at the science behind its superfood claims.

Beetroots are packed with vital minerals including folate, Vitamin C and iron

Beetroots are packed with vital minerals including folate, Vitamin C and iron

Why are beetroots so good for you?

Beetroots are packed with essential minerals and vitamins, with a standard 80g serving delivering a huge 44 per cent of the NHS’ recommended intake of folate (also known as vitamin B9).

A serving of this size is equal to three small whole baby beetroots, seven slices of large beetroot or three heaped tablespoons of diced or grated beetroot. Alternatively, a 150ml glass of beetroot counts a single portion.

If eating pickled beetroots, pay attention to any additional salt and sugar used in the production process that could counteract its natural goodness.

‘Furthermore, pickled beetroot, which is preserved in vinegar, is not usually fermented and therefore won’t contain additional live bacteria,’ says Ms Soutter, who adds that looking for fermented beetroot products will provide live bacteria which may support gut health.

A same size serving also contains 13 per cent of the daily target of manganese, an essential trace mineral needed for bone and joint health.

They’re best known for being packed with nitrates, which are converted into nitric oxide in the blood. This compound relaxes and widens blood vessels, leading to lower blood pressure

Present in lesser – but not negligible amounts – is Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant vital for a healthy immune system – plus potassium, magnesium and iron, which are all vital for cardiovascular health.

And, as if all that wasn’t reason enough to be adding beetroots to your daily rotation, they’re low in calories (34 per 80g serving) and relatively high in fibre.

However, they are quite high in carbohydrates, with 5.4g of their 7.7g carb load coming from natural sugars.

‘Enjoy beetroot with Vitamin C-rich foods, such as lemon juice or in a salad with orange slices, to enhance iron absorption,’ advises Ms Soutter.

Does beetroot lower blood pressure?

Multiple scientific studies have found a link between drinking beetroot juice and reduced blood pressure, and it all comes down to how the body utilises the root veg’s natural nitrates.

In a process that begins in the mouth, the nitrates are converted into nitric oxide, a compound that helps veins and arteries relax and widen, giving blood more space to move through them.

A 2018 review of 11 randomised controlled trials that looked at the effects of beetroot on blood pressure found that it had a particular influence on systolic blood pressure, the pressure of the blood against the arteries when the heart beats.

Its effect on the opposite measurement, diastolic blood pressure – which measures the pressure during the gaps between beats – was found to be less substantial.

Across the studies, the study authors noted that the overall evidence suggested that beetroot could have a beneficial effect on the blood pressure of both healthy people and those with raised cardiovascular risk, including pre-hypertension and hypertension.

‘When it comes to exercise performance and blood pressure, most studies have examined the effects of daily beetroot juice consumption,’ explains Ms Soutter.

‘For general health, whole beetroot can make a great addition to the diet a few times per week, and is an excellent way to boost our fibre, folate and potassium intake.’

Can beetroot boost virility?

The secret to a good sex life is a good vascular system, so it’s unsurprising that beetroots have become associated with virility.

‘Beetroot is a rich source of dietary nitrates, which convert to a substance called nitric oxide, which can dilate blood vessels and thereby improve blood flow,’ says Ms Soutter.

‘As good blood flow is important for erectile function, beetroot has been hypothesised to boost sex drive.

‘However, there is limited evidence to support this, and most of the positive research has focused on the benefits of nitrates in beetroot for lowering blood pressure whilst improving exercise endurance and sports performance.’

Are beetroots good for digestion?

Beetroot is a source of gut-friendly fibre, while some of its compounds, including pectin, act as prebiotics – essentially fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, helping them to flourish.

‘As our beneficial gut bacteria ferment these prebiotics, they produce short-chain fatty acids, which support the health of the gut lining,’ says Ms Soutter.

However, beetroot can be a double-edged sword for people with sensitive guts. It contains FODMAPs – types of fermentable carbohydrates that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine and may trigger bloating, gas, stomach pain or changes in bowel habits in some people with irritable bowel syndrome.

Their red colour is their superpower

Beetroot is rich in two compounds that have attracted significant scientific interest – naturally occurring nitrates and betalains.

Betalains are the pigments responsible for beetroot’s distinctive deep red or purple colour, with some varieties producing yellow pigments instead.

‘Beetroot is a unique source of these phytonutrients,’ says Ms Soutter.

‘Research has shown that this plant pigment has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants help protect our cells against free radical damage from UV rays, pollution, and smoke.’

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells over time, contributing to inflammation and ageing. By helping to neutralise them, antioxidants such as betalains are thought to support overall health and may help protect against chronic disease, although more research is needed to fully understand their long-term effects.

Beetroots can interact with medications

People taking drugs for high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney disease need to be wary about eating large amounts of beetroot or any concentrated supplements.

This is because the nitrates in the veggies can cause a ‘double drop’ in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting or, in more serious cases, a dangerously low blood pressure episode.

For the same reason, people who already have low blood pressure should also avoid concentrated beetroot supplements.

And for people with chronic kidney disease, particularly stages 3 to 5, it’s important to be cautious because beetroot is relatively high in potassium, which can contribute to harmful electrolyte imbalances.

And, because beetroot is high in oxalates, it could trigger issues with people who suffer with calcium oxalate kidney stones.
