Rising authoritarianism, ongoing genocides and global pandemics have made the world feel frighteningly unreal, so it is little wonder audiences have continued turning to scary movies. In theaters, horror offers a controlled way to confront anxieties that are otherwise impossible to escape. Sharing that experience with a roomful of strangers can make even the darkest material feel more manageable.
That surge in popularity has helped send an unprecedented wave of horror releases into cinemas around the world. The decade has already produced an abundance of daring, distinctive films, but a select few stand above the rest as defining examples of modern horror. The five titles highlighted here—based on entirely subjective judgment—represent the genre at its most inventive during the 2020s. Each is exceptional, yet they differ dramatically in style, mood and ambition.
There is no single formula behind the decade’s most memorable horror movies. Some unsettle through social commentary, others through sheer spectacle or surreal invention. Together, they demonstrate just how many different ways contemporary filmmakers can frighten, astonish and stay with audiences long after the credits roll.
The Ugly Stepsister

Modern cinema has repeatedly reinvented familiar fairy tales, from “Shrek” and “Frozen” to “Wicked.” Few revisions, however, are as disturbing or as carefully realized as “The Ugly Stepsister.” Written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, this audacious body-horror film shifts the focus to Elvira (Lea Myren), one of Cinderella’s supposedly unattractive stepsisters, played by Thea Sofie Loch Næss. Once relegated to the margins of the story, Elvira becomes the central figure as her mother tries to secure her a wealthy marriage and rescue the family from financial hardship.
Elvira’s transformation is driven by a brutal desire to satisfy poisonous, male-defined beauty standards. She is subjected to bizarre cosmetic procedures designed to make her appear worthy of a prince, and Blichfeldt does not spare viewers the chiseling, tearing flesh or stomach-churning tapeworm extractions involved. Yet the film’s disgust is never empty provocation. Beneath its grotesque imagery lies a sharp examination of misogyny and the damaging expectations imposed on women.
The film is particularly unflinching in its depiction of older men exploiting young women, while economic desperation becomes another force stripping women and girls of their humanity. By fusing a familiar fairy tale with uncompromising body horror, “The Ugly Stepsister” manages to be both physically nauseating and intellectually incisive.

Jordan Peele’s influences range across an impressively broad selection of films, a diversity reflected in the shifting tones of his own work. His three features as a director are already strong candidates to inspire future filmmakers, including “Nope,” his only directorial release of the 2020s so far. At its heart, the movie is a warning about humanity’s urge to dominate forces that should never be controlled, expressed through the unlikely collision of a California ranching family and a UFO.
There is enough thematic depth and visual invention in “Nope” to sustain countless academic discussions, but the film never loses sight of its job as a horror story. It can be genuinely terrifying. One standout sequence traps Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. (Daniel Kaluuya) inside a barn while an apparently alien presence moves steadily closer, turning suspense into an exercise in controlled panic. The creature, nicknamed Jean Jacket, becomes even more frightening because Peele refuses to make its nature fully comprehensible or familiar.
With its assured direction, unforgettable imagery and expertly calibrated scares, “Nope” keeps viewers tense from start to finish. That combination of spectacle and fear is a remarkable achievement, even if it feels entirely consistent with Peele’s body of work.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Slasher killers and cursed campgrounds may be familiar sources of terror, but writer-director Jane Schoenbrun argues that true fear can come from far more intimate places. In “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” being sexually honest, exploring one’s desires, opening up emotionally and confronting the influence of beloved art all become frightening acts of self-discovery. As the best horror film of 2026 so far, “Camp Miasma” makes that difficult process feel both unnerving and strangely liberating.
The story follows filmmaker Kris Williams as they encounter reclusive movie star Billy Presley at a campground of deep importance to horror enthusiasts within the film’s world. “Camp Miasma” draws on the visual language of classic genre cinema while remaining unmistakably its own creation. Its winter setting glows with purple and pink tones, brought to life through richly textured matte paintings that make the landscape feel almost tangible. The film’s deliberately unstable tone accommodates both an all-time slasher set piece and wildly surreal images that are as mesmerizing as they are disturbing.
Although it is steeped in older horror traditions and shaped by the studio tensions surrounding contemporary genre filmmaking, “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” feels wholly singular. Whatever else the remainder of the decade may produce, Schoenbrun’s film is poised to remain one of the signature horror releases of the 2020s.
Titane

There is nothing quite like “Titane.” Julia Ducournau’s 2021 French-language horror film became notorious after causing some viewers to faint in theaters. Its protagonist, Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), has a titanium plate in her head, a history of murder and a startling sexual fixation with automobiles. After a particularly violent massacre, she assumes the identity of Adrien, a missing teenage boy, and moves in with his father, Vincent (Vincent Lindon). An unexpected and deeply affecting bond develops between them, with the song “Macarena” playing an unlikely role in the story.
“Titane” is gloriously unrestrained, showing no interest in courting mainstream approval or following conventional storytelling rules. That refusal is central to its power. Ducournau fills the film with images that push body horror to extraordinary extremes, then heightens them through vivid color palettes and intricate sound design. The result is not simply a series of shocking moments, but a meticulously crafted descent into cinematic madness.
Like the most enduring horror films, “Titane” shocks viewers before leaving them unsettled and unsure of what they have witnessed. Ducournau’s greatest feat is balancing grotesque unions of flesh and metal with moments of genuine tenderness. The film’s ability to be revolting, bewildering and unexpectedly moving at the same time makes it one of the decade’s most astonishing achievements.
Sinners

“Sinners” wasn’t just Ryan Coogler’s most ambitious film yet, nor was it just one of the best vampire movies ever made. It’s also unquestionably the greatest horror movie of the 2020s so far. There are endless elements specific to this feature that make that achievement a no-brainer. However, it’s worth noting all the unique qualities “Sinners” has that no other 2020s horror movie has. Does any other scary title this decade have a sequence as mesmerizing and showstopping as the big “I Lied to You” musical number in “Sinners?” Does any other 2020s frightfest feature such inspired uses of shifting aspect ratios or richly tactile IMAX 70mm camerawork? How about a pair of lead performances as ingeniously realized as the ones Michael B. Jordan delivers as twins Smoke and Stack?
“Sinners” is a rollicking ride (centered on Smoke and Stack starting up a juke joint that gets invaded by Irish vampires) rich with thoughtful social commentary, precisely realized visuals, and also incredibly fun flourishes (like a villainous vampire repeatedly yelling “SAMMIE!”). It just excels on every conceivable level, from Ruth E. Carter’s magnificent costume design to a flawless ensemble cast (Delroy Lindo especially steals the show with his unforgettable work). Also, it succeeds at being truly scary and gnarly with its unabashedly classical take on vampires.
“Sinners” gives you everything you’d want out of a horror movie and then proceeds to provide moviegoers with infinitely more. One of the greatest cinema accomplishments of the 21st century, “Sinners” is undoubtedly the pinnacle of 2020s horror filmmaking so far.
