Cuba Faces Third Major Blackout in 2023 Amid Deepening Power Crisis

0

On Monday, an extensive blackout left all of Cuba in darkness, reflecting the severe energy challenges increasingly impacting the country’s delicate power infrastructure.

Approximately 10 million residents experienced the outage, though some regions received partial electricity restoration later on.

“The National Electric Power System has completely disconnected,” Cuba’s government-managed Electric Union announced early Monday. “Investigations into the causes are ongoing.”

The frequency of power outages in Cuba has escalated in recent years, largely due to persistent fuel shortages and aging electrical grids. The situation intensified after former President Donald Trump expanded sanctions in January, coupled with threats of imposing tariffs on nations supplying oil to Cuba.

During Monday’s blackout, public transportation was largely halted, and officials said tens of thousands of surgeries were canceled nationwide, according to The Associated Press (AP).

Authorities later said one generating unit had resumed operations roughly two hours after the collapse.

“Microsystems are already operational throughout the country, to ensure protection for vital services,” the Electric Union said.

The energy minister said officials were working to restore power while accusing the U.S. of contributing to Cuba’s energy struggles.

“Vital services continue to be protected, amidst this complex situation exacerbated by the energy blockade we face,” Vicente de la O Levy said.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also blamed U.S. policies, describing the energy blockade as a “genocidal” measure imposed by Washington.

“While the U.S. tries to induce a social explosion through asphyxiation by blocking fuel access to #Cuba, the UNE mobilizes to reverse the SEN outage,” Díaz-Canel said, referring to Cuba’s National Electric Power System.

“What the electrical workers are doing in the midst of a genocidal energy blockade is heroic.”

Cuba’s energy crisis intensified earlier this year after a U.S. military operation captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and halted Venezuelan oil exports, cutting off a key source of fuel for the island.

While Cuba produces only about 40% of the fuel it needs, a Russian tanker delivered roughly 730,000 barrels of oil to the country in March, supplies that were depleted by the end of April, according to The AP.

To conserve fuel, the Cuban government has imposed scheduled power outages that have lasted more than 24 consecutive hours in some areas, the outlet said.

A blackout in early March affected Cuba’s western provinces, while a separate outage in mid-March plunged the entire island into darkness.

Inside the Extravagance: Taylor Swift’s Wedding Guests Share Their Perspectives

0

The much-anticipated wedding of pop sensation Taylor Swift and football star Travis Kelce was intended to be a ‘magical’ representation of their love story and a testament to Taylor’s immense global influence.

Hosted at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden on July 3, the event was grand in its design but reportedly fell short in execution, according to some disgruntled attendees. Critiques emerged post-celebration concerning the ‘tacky’ and ‘chaotic’ atmosphere, highlighted by an early champagne shortage and lengthy lines at the buffet tables.

One guest expressed surprise at the buffet-style dining, exclaiming, ‘I couldn’t believe that there was a buffet at the wedding of the year!’ For them, it seemed an unexpectedly casual choice.

The scene became even more noteworthy with tales of well-known figures like Julia Roberts and Steven Spielberg queuing for food. As one attendee recounted, ‘There were slightly chaotic scenes around the food carts with all these amazing A-listers having to stand in line. It wasn’t quite what I expected.’ This unexpected twist added a layer of unanticipated informality to the otherwise star-studded affair.

Adding to the controversy was a hierarchy system that placed guests from A-list to D-list based on their importance to the bride, dictating their arrival times. This stratified approach drew further mixed reactions, with its potentially uncomfortable implications.

British supermodel Cara Delevingne, for example, was in the first, D list contingent, getting to the Madison Square Garden at 2.30pm, a full three hours before the ceremony.

Actor Bradley Cooper and TV host Graham Norton were not far behind, arriving by 3.30pm. Taylor’s best friend Abigail Anderson, whom she’s known since her high school days in Nashville, Tennessee, only showed up at 4.30pm.

The most important guests arrived as instructed closer to the time of the 5.30pm ceremony.

A source said: ‘It was surprisingly chaotic inside. Arrivals were staggered with people having to wait for hours with nothing to do. The cocktails only started at 4pm. People literally were twiddling their thumbs for hours.

‘If you were in the 2.30pm time slot, you couldn’t even amuse yourself by checking your phone. You were just standing around like a lemon wondering why the hell you were forced to arrive so early.’

Everyone had to give up their phones upon arrival – and faced long queues to collect them at the end of the night.

Before giving up hers, Joann Jordan, wife of personal trainer Rob Jordan, shared a look at the transformation of the infamously unglamorous venue in midtown New York. In one of the photos, Rob and Joann walk up a large staircase covered in a red carpet, which is surrounded by white and dark pink curtains.

‘An unforgettable evening in New York celebrating the beginning of a beautiful new chapter for our dear friends, Travis and Taylor. Love was in the air, the city was magical, and every detail was simply unforgettable!’ she gushed.

Kelce’s friend, DJ Chop UFL, also shared photos on the same two staircases. ‘The secret garden was an unbelievable celebration and experience! So happy for my brother and sister Trav & Tay Tay. Congratulations once again! Yesterday was perfect,’ he said.

A video obtained by the Daily Mail shows guests queuing up to walk through a ‘castle door’ into the inner sanctum of the wedding located inside the vast venue, which can seat 20,000.

Famous guests included TV host Graham Norton (pictured), model Cara Delevingne and actor Bradley Cooper, while the ceremony itself was officiated by actor and comedian Adam Sandler

News website TMZ reported that the theme was Wizard Of Oz meets Alice In Wonderland.

A source says: ‘I know everyone was saying how it was all decked out fairytale garden-style so you’d never even know it was Madison Square Garden – but apparently this is not true.

‘When you got inside, some of the flowers, vines and garlands were wrapped so badly around the seating that they barely camouflaged the plastic bucket-style stadium seats. It was all quite ghastly and tacky. They had tried to cover up that it was a wedding in a stadium, and that failed.

‘Also, there were loads of huge fake plastic trees all over the place and it just looked bizarre.’

The specifics of the theme appeared to be lost on the guests – some said it was ‘fairground Americana’ while others described it as ‘an enchanted forest’.

Even more bizarrely, dotted around the stadium were traditional pinball and slot machines swagged with pink, peach and coral drapes and lots of gold heraldic renderings of the love-birds’ initials T&T.

Another unusual element to the wedding was a raffle. The celebrity guests were invited to win raffle tickets by playing games like mini golf, pinball and a ring toss during the post-nuptial party.

A number were later notified that they had won prizes which included designer Dior and Chanel bags, a Cartier watch and a classic 1970 Chevy car. Singer Avril Lavigne, who performed karaoke later in the evening, was reportedly one of the lucky millionaires who won a free bag.

In all, the event apparently cost billionaire Taylor and her beau at least $20 million (£15 million). They also made a $26 million (£19.5 million) donation to charities, including children’s hospitals and food banks.

The wedding itself was officiated by actor and comedian Adam Sandler, who is legally ordained and whose daughters are huge Swifties. Kelce became friendly with Sandler on the set of his 2025 Netflix comedy Happy Gilmore 2. Apparently Sandler joked that he accepted the gig ‘in order to get both Travis and Taylor in one of his next movies’ or to negotiate a good price in case he ever produced a movie about their life and love.

The bride was dressed in Christian Dior haute couture, and flanked by her new nieces – the daughters of Kelce’s brother Jason and wife Kylie – who threw petals as she walked towards her groom to an instrumental version of her hit, Love Story.

There were no traditional bridesmaids. Instead Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as Taylor’s ‘man of honour’ while the groom’s brother Jason was his best man.

The vows, according to ABC anchor and former Bill Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos, who spoke briefly as he left, were ‘everything you would hope for – real, vulnerable, serious and silly’. News website TMZ reported that the couple exchanged deeply personal vows from ‘little books’ in the stadium.

A guest tells me more prosaically: ‘The ceremony was really long. Taylor’s vows took around 20 minutes to make and it was the same again for Travis.’

What’s not known is that sadly most of the invited guests had to stand throughout. The source added: ‘There were only about 150 official seats which meant that about 800 people had to stand throughout the ceremony.

‘People were trying to reserve seats by throwing their jackets over them, but they got booted out of those seats by staff because those were reserved for the closest people.’

And then came the food and the partying – with dancing, a DJ and live music performances, including former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney singing I Want To Hold Your Hand.

A source said: ‘It was an amazing event but people couldn’t believe that the champagne ran out really early. That felt kind of astonishing.

‘There were also people who were surprised about the food. It was not great and served buffet-style with long lines if you wanted to eat.’

The source adds: ‘The problems were all because the wedding was so big. At a normal wedding, everyone knows the bride and groom, and you don’t have to stagger arrivals or queue for food because there aren’t 1,000 people.

‘Also, at a normal wedding people have a table to sit on and are then catered for. This was far more of a stadium vibe. People kind of felt like they existed to be Taylor’s audience on the day.’

One guest said that there was genuine excitement and surprise over the performance by Sir Paul McCartney, however. He and Taylor are big fans of each other’s work, and she is also close to his daughter, fashion designer Stella.

At one point Taylor’s groom Travis Kelce also got up to sing. ‘I think it was at Rod Stewart standard,’ says the guest. ‘It wasn’t quite at Macca’s level.’

It is reported that Travis and Taylor – never known for underplaying their cultural significance – are making a documentary about the big day, which will detail the wedding planning process from picking the flowers to how the event was organised backstage. This will be sent to every guest as a thank you for coming.

Whether it can erase those less delightful memories of food carts and lengthy queues remains to be seen.

Kylian Mbappé Denounces Paraguayan Senator Over Alleged Racism

0

The French Football Federation has announced plans to initiate legal action against a Paraguayan senator, following her allegedly racist remarks about Kylian Mbappé, the star striker and captain of the French national team.

The controversy arose after France secured a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup’s Round of 16. Mbappé was instrumental in the win, scoring the match’s sole goal from a penalty in the 70th minute.

In the aftermath of the match, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla took to X to express her views on the game, targeting Mbappé with personal insults. In her post, she labeled the French captain as “newly rich, arrogant and ugly,” and made derogatory comments concerning his Cameroonian roots and nationality.

Reacting strongly, the French Football Federation condemned these comments as “criminal and reprehensible,” emphasizing their frustration with the derogatory nature of the remarks.

“Such statements are a disgrace to those who utter them, as well as to those who propagate them. The players of the French national team embody the spirit of France; hence, insulting them equates to insulting our nation,” the Federation remarked.

The federation said it will file a report with the public prosecutor’s office, with a view to starting legal proceedings.

A footballer wearing a blue jersey smiles as he hugs his two teammates.

Mbappé also responded to the remarks on social media, describing Amarilla as a “despicable woman” who he believes is “unworthy” of her position.

“You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition,” the 27-year-old said.

“Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup …”

‘Disgraceful, vile, outrageous’

Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement following the incident.

“The Government of the Republic of Paraguay deplores and rejects the remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla regarding the captain of the French national team,” it read.

“These statements run counter to the values and principles of peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity that our country promotes.”

The government added that the Republic of Paraguay is governed by the “principle of the separation and independence of state powers”. In this context, it said statements made by Amarilla “in no way” represent the position of the Paraguayan government or people.

A crowd of French World Cup fans wearing red, white and blue raise their arms and flags in excitement.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed that Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios had written to him to express support and condemn the remarks.

Guy Stephan, the assistant coach of France’s national football team, summed up the incident in three words — “disgraceful, vile, outrageous”.

Amirilla, 61, is a lawyer in Paraguay and member of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party.

She posted an open letter in French and Spanish directed to Mbappé on social media on Tuesday, saying her problems were with him rather than France.

The politician said she regretted issuing the “same insults” to Mbappé that she had received as a mixed-race person, and she had deleted her post.

But she also demanded an apology from Mbappé, accusing him of gender-based violence in his comments, and threatening legal action if he did not retract them.

She previously posted about Mbappé on Saturday — criticising the footballer’s heritage and intelligence on social media.

In a statement, the French Football Association reaffirmed that it “offers its full support to its captain, its players and, more broadly, to all victims of such abhorrent remarks”.

“Now more than ever, the FFF is committed to combating racism and all forms of discrimination.”

Spain’s Coach De la Fuente Praises Merino’s Match-Winning Performance Against Portugal

Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his admiration for Mikel Merino following the midfielder’s decisive goal. Merino’s late strike off the bench clinched a 1-0 victory over Portugal, propelling La Roja into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In the 91st minute in Dallas, Merino found the net after an assist from fellow substitute Ferran Torres, concluding a tense Round of 16 match and sending Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal home.

Reflecting on the triumph, De la Fuente highlighted the impact of Spain’s substitutes, noting that their contributions were pivotal in a match he likened to a final.

“It truly was a spectacular match, almost like a final before the final. As anticipated, we faced challenges right up until the last moments,” De la Fuente remarked.

“We delivered a well-rounded performance, but the key players are those who step off the bench. I advised Merino to stick to his usual play style, aiding both midfield and attack. Our aim was to ensure a strong pace leading up to potential extra time. The players’ contributions have been exceptional.”

Coach backs Yamal and Rodri

The Spain manager reserved special praise for Merino, revealing the long-standing relationship he has built with the Arsenal midfielder through the national team’s youth ranks.

“I’m very happy for him. I have a great affection for all the players, but with Mikel Merino there’s something special because we’ve known each other for a long time.”

“If necessary, I’d go to pick him up at his house. He’s world-class. Mikel never disappoints; he’s a safe bet.”

De la Fuente also defended teenage winger Lamine Yamal, insisting the Barcelona youngster produced one of his finest performances despite facing tough opposition.

“I think he played one of his best games; it’s a very important day for his growth.”

“He instilled fear. It’s one of the best games in Lamine’s history… and there’s more to come.”

The coach also highlighted the influence of midfielder Rodri.

“Rodri is the guiding light of this team. A player with an exceptional presence. He provides balance. He’s the best player in the world in his position.”

Spain will now face Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals after the Red Devils defeated the United States 4-1.

Looking ahead, De la Fuente insisted his side remain focused regardless of the opponent.

“We don’t care who we face. We’re happy to be in the quarter-finals and we’re going to give it our all until the end. Our opponents will have to beat us.”

Arlington Heights Approves Exciting ‘Sip and Stroll’ Plan for Outdoor Leisure

0

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) — The village of Arlington Heights is advancing with an initiative to allow residents and visitors to enjoy drinks while strolling through its downtown area.

On Monday night, trustees gave the green light to a new pilot program that establishes a “social district.”

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

This initiative will permit participating bars and restaurants to offer take-out beverages.

Customers can enjoy their drinks so long as they stay within the confines of a designated four-block area, aptly named the “alfresco zone.”

This pedestrian-only zone has become a lively hub for dining and socializing, especially during warmer months.

Larry Rebodos, owner of Big Shot Piano Lounge and Restaurant, said the open-air setup continues to draw crowds.

“All the restaurants are out here. We’ve got seating, I’ve got live music playing outside,” Rebodos said.

Village Trustee Tom Schwingbeck introduced the sip-and-stroll idea. He said he was inspired by a similar setup in St. Joseph, Michigan, where he often vacations.

“I’ve seen how successful this can be for the downtown area there,” Schwingbeck said.

He added that the concept could help ease long waits at popular restaurants, saying, “Some of our restaurants don’t take reservations and it might be a 45-minute wait. You can go in; you can grab a drink and stroll around in our downtown business district.”

The pilot program would begin in August run through October, operating Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m. Rebodos said he supports the plan.

“I was born in Chicago. We have three months’ worth of good weather. So, every minute counts. I was all on board when they brought this up,” he said.

Not everyone on the board agreed. Trustee Robin LaBedz said she worries about potential litter and underage drinking once alcohol leaves restaurant premises.

“I’m not worried about our restaurants checking IDs, they’re great about that, they know what they’re doing,” LaBedz said. “It’s when the alcohol comes back, away from restaurants and is in the public space. What then.”

The goal is to launch the program on July 30.

Sunny Hostin Expresses Safety Concerns in American Flag-Adorned Neighborhoods

0

Sunny Hostin, a familiar face on “The View,” has voiced her discomfort once more regarding neighborhoods displaying the American flag. This isn’t a new stance for Hostin, who first expressed similar sentiments back in 2021.

During a recent discussion on the show marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and reflecting on the nation’s current state, Hostin revisited her previous remarks. It was then that she openly disclosed her unease when encountering neighborhoods adorned with numerous American flags.

Reflecting on her decade-long tenure on the show, Hostin recalled, “Many years ago, I mentioned on this show that there are instances when I walk into a community, and American flags are prominently displayed everywhere. In such moments, I can’t help but feel uneasy because a segment of this country has redefined the American flag. They associate it with White supremacy, which is a misuse of its symbolism—it should never represent that, but some have turned it into a symbolical weapon.”

Her comments came on the heels of a panel discussion regarding a viral photograph depicting uniformed White nationalists riding the Metro in Washington, DC, while a Black woman sits nearby with a solemn expression. The image sparked conversations about the flag’s changing perceptions.

The image in question followed a march by the group in Washington, DC, over the recent weekend, drawing national attention and further highlighting the complexities surrounding the American flag’s current significance.

“That, for me, was a defining image of modern America for Black Americans,” Hostin said, condemning the American-flag-style insignias on their caps.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin took the opportunity to blast fringe activists on both sides of the political spectrum, but guest host Michelle Buteau, who had celebrated 4th of July by eating a cake that said “America, Do Better B—-” argued this was an indictment of the nation as a whole.

“When you say it’s the best nation. The best nation for who? Because if we are celebrating 250 years, what are we exactly celebrating, is what I want to know,” Buteau said. “So I’m really glad that picture was taken, because that picture is how we feel walking into many rooms, down the street. That picture is how we feel and nobody will believe us. So look at that picture and understand how it feels.”

“The flag belongs to all of us,” Griffin replied.

In 2021, Hostin spoke on “The View” about the phenomenon of Black Americans feeling uncomfortable in neighborhoods with American flags, defending MSNBC analyst Mara Gay for her controversial admission that she felt it “disturbing” to see American flags, Trump flags and condemnations of then-President Joe Biden in Long Island, New York.

“When someone of color, a Black woman, is telling you her feelings, people need to listen and not, you know, repudiate it and not say, ‘Well, that can’t be true,’” Hostin had said at the time, later adding, “When I drive into a neighborhood, and it’s not July 4th, and I’m not in a predominantly military household neighborhood and there are flags, American flags, everywhere, alongside Trump flags, alongside flags with stars in a circle, I feel threatened.”

“Because the message is very clear,” she continued. “It’s a message of White supremacy. It’s a message of racism, and it’s a message of their country, not my country. I don’t understand why that would receive backlash. People need to listen when I am saying this is how I feel. This is my experience in this country.”

Taylor Swift’s Designer Item Raffle at Wedding Sparks Public Backlash

0

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are facing criticism after their opulent wedding celebration at Madison Square Garden drew attention for its extravagant party favors.

The couple, both aged 36, spared no expense for their grand ceremony, which welcomed a staggering 1,000 guests.

Reports have emerged about guests leaving the event with lavish prizes, such as Cartier watches, Chanel handbags, and even a car, which has sparked outrage on social media. Many users expressed disapproval over what they see as a showy display of wealth.

“A Cartier watch raffle at a wedding is peak excess,” remarked one individual on a Polymarket X thread, suggesting that “guests probably left with better loot than from the registry.”

Another commenter admitted to feeling “embarrassed for all of them.”

Another critic implied that the cops and sanitation workers should have been the ones to receive the valuable gifts.

‘So not the cops and sanitation workers busting ass in the insane heat on a holiday weekend? Nah, because lib friends wouldn’t like that look,’ the person speculated.

Someone else weighed in, ‘They could’ve fed a lot of homeless around the world instead.’

Yet another critic accused Swift of being ‘stuck in high school,’ calling the raffle ‘after-prom-coded.’

‘Raffle prizes at your wedding is a new one. Rich people wedding culture is just straight up performance art,’ huffed one fan.

‘That’s fun [as f***] for those involved but all of them are already filthy rich,’ highlighted one X user.

The person also questioned, ‘Why aren’t they just donating or something?’

Jackie Tranquill, the wife of Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammate Drue Tranquill, was among the lucky winners of the raffle.

Jackie shared a snap of her winning ticket and the lavish gift she won from the pair in an Instagram post on Monday.

The photo showed a black Chanel 25 Handbag made from grained calfskin which retails for $6,700. In the caption she wrote, ‘Congrats to the newly weds.’

Her photo carousel also appeared to show the dress she wore to the wedding.

Despite the vitriol, the bride and groom notably shelled out $26 million in donations to at least 20 charities during their wedding week.

Among the charities benefiting were nine food banks – including one in Swift’s hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania – three children’s hospitals, and seven educational programs.

An announcement from the pair’s representatives to the Daily Mail read, ‘This week, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift donated $26 million to charities across the United States.

After Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s charity The Store received its donation, the Instagram page shared a thank-you post reading, ‘We’re incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce for their transformative gift to The Store.

‘Their kindness will help more families across Middle Tennessee access fresh, healthy food with dignity and choice, and we’re honored to have their support.

‘Congratulations to Taylor and Travis on your upcoming wedding! Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness as you begin this next chapter together. Thank you for helping make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.’

Swift and Kelce’s wedding was full of actors, movie moguls, sports stars and supermodels.

Musicians including Jack Antonoff, Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello and the Haim sisters were also in attendance.

Unlock Stronger Inner Thighs with These 5 At-Home Wall Exercises for Over 60

Inner thigh strength is vital for maintaining side-to-side balance and stability.

>

Keeping your legs strong is essential, as your thighs are instrumental in everyday activities such as walking, running, standing, and climbing stairs. Strong inner thighs also play a part in preventing hip and knee injuries. Unfortunately, this critical area does not always receive the emphasis it deserves.

“As we age, we naturally experience a decline in muscle mass, and the inner thighs often get overlooked because many daily tasks don’t challenge these muscles adequately. Prolonged sitting can further contribute to their weakening over time,” explains Denise Chakoian, a certified fitness trainer in Rhode Island and proprietor of Core Cycle and Fitness LaGree. With over 16 years of experience training individuals across all ages and fitness levels, she emphasizes, “Robust inner thighs help maintain proper alignment of the hips and knees, reducing undue stress on the joints. They are also crucial for balance and lateral stability, which become increasingly significant with age. Keeping them strong can enhance posture and make movements more controlled and efficient.”

But there’s no need to worry, as we’re here to update your regimen with some essential tweaks. We spoke with Chakoian about five wall exercises that can help bolster your inner thighs quicker than using gym machines for those over 60.

Chakoian selected these exercises because they simultaneously target the inner thighs while enhancing overall stability and balance.

“Using a wall provides extra support, which can help people over 60 feel more confident during the movements. These exercises are gentle on the joints and can be adjusted to different fitness levels. They also involve muscles that work together in everyday movement patterns rather than isolating just one area. Most importantly, they are simple enough to do consistently at home without any special equipment, which makes them easier to do on a day-to-day basis,” she tells us.

Wall Sit With Pillow Squeeze

Begin by placing a small pillow between your knees.

  1. Stand tall with your back pressed flat against a wall.
  2. Walk your feet out about two feet.

Belgium Shatters USA’s World Cup Hopes in Stunning Seattle Showdown: Trump’s Surprise Visit Can’t Save Hosts

Donald Trump found himself focusing on the wrong target. In an unexpected move that loomed large over the most significant match in U.S. soccer history, the former president urged FIFA president Gianni Infantino to permit the suspended Folarin Balogun to compete against Belgium.

Though Trump’s request was granted, the impact was negligible. During an intense 90 minutes in Seattle, it was Belgian forward Charles De Ketelaere who emerged as the pivotal player, dashing American aspirations and crushing the co-hosts’ hopes during the World Cup’s round of 16. His performance was both breathtaking and heart-wrenching for the hosts.

De Ketelaere netted two goals and set up another, capitalizing on the poor play from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. The U.S. team, despite previous displays of skill and potential, faltered spectacularly this time. Balogun was ineffective, and the American defense was easily breached, marking a disappointing end to a previously promising stretch.

This development, though surprising, was not entirely unexpected. The lead-up to this clash was marred by chaos and controversy, igniting ire on multiple fronts. President Trump’s intervention drew widespread criticism, as did FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play with less than a day’s notice. The intertwining of politics and sports seems more pronounced now than ever before.

Yet, the blame cannot be pinned on Balogun or his teammates. It remains unclear how deeply they were affected by the preceding turmoil. Nevertheless, team captain Tim Ream claims they remained unfazed. Still, it’s difficult to reconcile such a disappointing performance with any other explanation.

It was for nights such as this that US Soccer broke the bank to bring in Pochettino. He fueled talk of the impossible, too, with the same three-word mantra throughout this World Cup: ‘Why not us?’ Just as America began to dream, however, the USMNT collapsed. It was shocking and it ensures that the United States have still not gone beyond this stage of a World Cup since 2002. Pochettino’s future beyond this summer looks increasingly uncertain; the pain for his players will linger for a long, long time.

Infantino – watching from the posh seats in Seattle alongside the likes of Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos and Markwayne Mullin – may not survive this scandal. But De Ketelaere ensured, if only for a while, that this World Cup saga did not escalate even further. It will be Belgium who face Spain in the quarterfinals.

For the uninitiated, a brief timeline: Balogun, the US’ leading scorer at this World Cup, was sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. It looked a very harsh decision but FIFA rules prevented an appeal. And then on Sunday, FIFA announced out of nowhere that Balogun’s one-game ban had been suspended. Before long, it emerged that Trump had waded in. Then all hell broke loose.

Belgium were left furious but Balogun was finally cleared to play just hours before kickoff, after FIFA rejected their appeal. Belgium threatened possible legal action if the striker played. He did. But he was powerless to prevent this generation from falling at the same hurdle as their predecessors in 2022, 2014, 2010 and at its other home World Cup in 1994.

Instead? De Ketelaere scored twice in the first half – either side of Malik Tillman’s free-kick – before USA goalkeeper Matt Freese gifted Belgium a third goal with a comical error and Chris Richards’ mistake allowed Lukaku to make it four late on.

With that, nearly 70,000 fans in Seattle were silenced and millions of dreams lay in ruins. On the bench, Christian Pulisic, who struggled before appearing to suffer yet another injury, looked devastated after coming off. Penny for the thoughts of his President, too.

There were still two hours until kickoff in Seattle when thousands of US fans began a slow, deafening march toward Lumen Field. They brought flares and flags and drums. They held up signs of John Denver and Folarin Balogun, one of which carried an image of the striker along with the caption: ‘Land Of The Free’

As the procession headed down Western Avenue, people lined the streets. Others gathered on balconies, bridges and on the roof of a parking garage. Among the huge crowds was a key figure within US soccer who stopped for a quick chat. They were unequivocal: Trump’s call to Infantino made no difference in FIFA’s decision to suspend Balogun’s ban. They might be right. US Soccer led the fight; FIFA insisted its judicial bodies are ‘independent’ and ‘operate autonomously’.

But, by then, the die had been cast, the waters had been muddied and this World Cup had been plunged into chaos. Acolytes around the White House rushed to credit the president, big names across soccer voiced their fury. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia compared the decision to an April Fools’ joke, even Balogun’s dad insisted ‘politics should not interfere in sport’ in an interview with the Daily Mail.

So much of this nonsense could have been avoided had FIFA rules allowed the USMNT to appeal Balogun’s red card. Or had FIFA just explained why his ban had been suspended.

Instead? Confusion abounded and Infantino sat in the stands facing allegations of political interference and favoritism. But, more important than one man and his ludicrous grip on this sport, an amazing story had been blotted. What did Pochettino and his players do to deserve this? Over their first four games, they had played magnificently, captivating millions and laying the foundations for a transformative summer for soccer in this country.

Then, through no fault of their own, they were swept up in scandal. Pochettino had been desperate to prevent his team being dragged into politics or any wider controversy. He succeeded until Trump picked up the phone.

Somehow, when the two teams emerged on to the field on Monday night, less than 36 hours had passed since Balogun and Co boarded the team bus for training, unaware they were driving into the eye of a storm.

By then, the atmosphere inside Lumen Field had reached boiling point. Within ten minutes, however, so much of the noise and energy had been sucked out of this place. Make no mistake: this is not a great Belgium team and here, both Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne started on the bench. But, right from the off, the USMNT sputtered when it mattered most.

Almost immediately, Freese was forced into a save by Timothy Castagne. Then Youri Tielemans missed a glorious chance. And then three USMNT players failed to deal with a looping ball inside their own area, allowing Nicolas Raskin to gather it and put it on a plate for De Ketelaere. The defending was woeful.

Pochettino’s players were all over the place. It took the US half an hour to create a chance. Inevitably, Balogun played his part – winning a foul in a dangerous area and then whipping up the crowd. Moments later, Tillman’s free-kick was deflected past Thibaut Courtois.

His set piece against Bosnia and Herzegovina had sealed the US’ place in the last 16. This gave Pochettino’s team liftoff once more. Alas, America was level for less than two minutes before Leandro Trossard crossed for De Ketelaere to score again.

Pochettino vented his frustration by kicking water bottles near the bench and the manager’s mood did not improve when, shortly before half-time, the ball dropped to Balogun a few yards out, only for the striker to fire over the bar.

Balogun missed another opportunity late on. By then, though, this game had gone. Poor Freese. The goalkeeper initially did well to come out to collect a long ball ahead of De Ketelaere.

But then he dithered for half a second too long, allowing the Belgian forward to deflect the ball to Hans Vanaken who, from around 35 yards, curled the ball past Freese, beyond Ream and into the net. Then Richards gave the ball away near his own goal and Lukaku rubbed salt in American wounds.

Exploring BBC Breakfast Host Naga Munchetty’s Relationship with Her Renowned Husband

Naga Munchetty

Naga Munchetty has graced BBC Breakfast as a regular presenter since 2014, after initially stepping into the role as a fill-in host five years prior. The 51-year-old anchors the popular show alongside Charlie Stayt from Thursday to Saturday. While audiences are acquainted with Naga on screen, her husband, James Haggar, tends to enjoy a less public presence, focusing on his work behind the cameras.

James Haggar boasts a distinguished career in broadcasting, having directed Sky News’ panel show The Pledge between 2015 and 2021. His impressive resume includes over ten years as a senior director at CNBC International, as well as significant stints directing Five News and OK TV. Additionally, he has held the roles of Senior Studio Director at ITV and Creative Director at GB News. Although the exact timing of Naga and James’s first meeting remains a mystery, the couple has shared a happy marriage since 2007.

Their relationship seemed destined for success from the start, with their first date taking place in a pool hall—a fitting choice for the snooker enthusiasts. Their mutual passion for the game is evident, even extending to their Hertfordshire home, which features its very own snooker table.

The couple exchanged vows in 2007, though details of the ceremony have largely stayed under wraps. However, Munchetty has revealed some valuable marriage advice she once received, offering a glimpse into the wisdom that supports their enduring partnership.

“When James and I got married almost 12 years ago, one of his aunts said to us: the best bit of advice I can give you is to simply be kind to one another. She was right,” Naga told The Guardian in 2016.

She went on to explain how their shared passion for golf strengthens their relationship.

“James and I are both golfers, and I think it’s great for our relationship,” Naga said.

“It gives us a few hours together when we’re walking and talking and catching up; it really makes a difference. Golf takes you on a journey together, and it means you stay in touch with one another.”

During a photoshoot in her home in 2016, a framed photo from their wedding day was on display.

The image shows the BBC Radio 5 Live host posing alongside her mother in an ivory corseted dress, complete with distinctive choker-style detailing around the neckline.

Not everything ran smoothly on their big day, as Naga revealed the mishap she suffered with her “puffy” wedding dress.

“I don’t know if I styled it out, but I did fall over in a big, puffy wedding dress during my first dance to You’re Just Too Good To Be True,” she admitted on her 5 Live show.

“We even figured out a dance routine and everything. It didn’t go to plan but the wedding day was a success apart from that.”

While speaking to her former BBC Breakfast co-star Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerso on the Her Spirit podcast, Naga admitted she and James rarely argue.

“James and I don’t row, and he’s a lovely, lovely man, he’s definitely the better half,” she said. However, she did detail the time he had a “meltdown” when she roped him into marathon training in tough weather conditions back in 2013.

Thankfully, they managed to put their differences aside and completed the marathon together.

The couple were content enough with their lives and busy schedules that they decided against starting a family.

Addressing their personal choice not to have children, Naga told The Times: “We never tried, and I never miscarried; we just never really wanted them. We kept putting the decision off, and then life got better for us, we became more selfish… and just didn’t find the time.”

The BBC host faced backlash for the decision, revealing that people branded her “wicked” for denying her mother grandchildren.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live in 2020, she said: “I remember when I told someone that I had decided I didn’t want children, someone told me I was wicked. Wicked against my mother for denying her grandchildren. It’s quite interesting, isn’t it, how people react?”

The TV host added: “I’m past the age now where people expect me to have children. But people can be quite forthright: ‘Oh, you can’t have them?’ I think people find it unusual that both in the relationship have agreed or decided or come to the conclusion that they don’t want children.”
